Coupled-channel analysis of pion- and eta-electroproduction with the J\"ulich-Bonn-Washington model

Pion and eta electroproduction data are jointly analyzed for the first time, up to a center-of-mass energy of 1.6 GeV. The framework is a dynamical coupled-channel model, based on the recent J\"ulich-Bonn-Washington analysis of pion electroproduction data for the same energy range. Comparisons are made to a number of single-channel eta electroproduction fits. By comparing multipoles of comparable fit quality, we find some of these amplitudes are well determined over the near-threshold region, while others will require fits over an extended energy range.

J\"ulich-Bonn-Washington Model for Pion Electroproduction Multipoles

Pion electroproduction off the proton is analyzed in a new framework based on a general parametrization of transition amplitudes, including constraints from gauge invariance and threshold behavior. Data with energies $1.13~{\rm GeV}<W<1.6~{\rm GeV}$ and $Q^2$ below $6~{\rm GeV}^2$ are included. The model is an extension of the latest J\"ulich-Bonn solution incorporating constraints from pion-induced and photoproduction data. Performing large scale fits ($\sim10^5$ data) we find a set of solutions with $\chi^2_{\rm dof}=1.69-1.81$ which allows us to assess the systematic uncertainty of the approach.

Progress in Neutron EM Couplings

An overview of the GW SAID and ITEP groups' effort to analyze pion photoproduction on the neutron-target will be given. The disentanglement of the isoscalar and isovector EM couplings of N* and Delta* resonances does require compatible data on both proton and neutron targets. The final-state interaction plays a critical role in the state-of-the-art analysis in extraction of the gn-->piN data from the deuteron target experiments. Then resonance couplings determined by the SAID PWA technique are then compared to previous findings. The neutron program is important component of the current JLab, MAMI-C, SPring-8, ELSA, and ELPH studies.

Resonance Extraction from the SAID Analysis

Resonances are extracted from a number of energy-dependent and single-energy fits to scattering data. The influence of recent, precise EPECUR data is investigated. Results for the single-energy fits are derived using the L+P method of analysis and are compared to those obtained using contour integration applied to the global energy-dependent fits.

SAID Analysis of Meson Photoproduction : Determination of Neutron and Proton EM Couplings

We present an overview of the GW SAID group effort to analyze on new pion photoproduction on both proton- and neutron-targets. The main database contribution came from the recent CLAS and MAMI unpolarized and polarized measurements. The differential cross section for the processes gamma n --> pi- p was extracted from new measurements accounting for Fermi motion effects in the impulse approximation (IA) as well as NN and piN effects beyond the IA. The EM coupling results are compared to other recent studies.

Update on Partial-Wave Analysis

Partial-wave analysis is one step in a process connecting experimental measurements to the N* states we are studying. Progress has been made in the area of `model-independent' analysis. However, more model-dependent approaches are needed to cover broader energy ranges. An example of the problems faced by these more ambitious analyses is given.

Effect of form factors in fits to photoproduction data

We compare the effects of several form factor recipes in fits to pseudoscalar meson photoproduction data. The specific examples of pion and kaon photoproduction are used to illustrate how different choices can alter the results of such analyses.

Form factors and photoproduction amplitudes

We examine the use of phenomenological form factors in tree level amplitudes for meson photoproduction. Two common recipes are shown to be fundamentally incorrect. An alternate form consistent with gauge invariance and crossing symmetry is proposed.

Amplitude Analysis

Even if a `complete set' of experimental observables were measured for the elastic scattering or photo/electroproduction of pseudoscalar mesons, ambiguities would remain in the extracted partial-wave and isospin decomposed amplitudes. As these problems are not widely understood, the present work outlines the way model-dependence enters into analyses of data from both hadronic and electromagnetic facilities.

Delta isobar masses, large N_c relations, and the quark model

Motivated by recent remarks on the Delta+ mass and comparisons between the quark model and relations based on large-N_c with perturbative flavor breaking, two sets of Delta masses consistent with these constraints are constructed. These two sets, based either on an experimentally determined mass splitting or a quark model of isospin symmetry breaking, are shown to be inconsistent. The model dependence of this inconsistency is examined, and suggestions for improved experiments are made. An explicit quark model calculation and mass relations based on the large-N_c limit with perturbative flavor breaking are compared. The expected level of accuracy of such relations is realized in the quark model, except for mass relations spanning more than one SU(6) representation. It is shown that the Delta0 and Delta++ pole masses and Delta0 - Delta+ = (Delta- - Delta++)/3 about 1.5 MeV are more consistent with model expectations than the analogous Breit-Wigner masses and their splittings.

Analysis of the pp-->pp, pid-->pid, and pid-->pp Scattering Data

A combined analysis of the main reactions of the two-baryon system (pp-->pp, pid-->pid, and pid-->pp) over the sqrt{s} interval from pion threshold to 2.4 GeV has been completed. The overall phase in pid-->pp has now been determined. The combined analysis has resulted in an improved fit to the pid elastic and pid-->pp databases.

Remarks on the Delta(+) mass

We question the reliability of current estimates for the Delta(+) mass. We explain why the standard value, determined from pion photoproduction, should not be used in conjunction with present estimates for the Delta(++) and Delta(0) masses, determined from pion-nucleon scattering. The resultant mass splittings are internally inconsistent. We also briefly comment on discrepancies found when `theoretical' and `experimental' values for the Delta masses are compared.

Ambiguities in the partial-wave analysis of pseudoscalar-meson photoproduction

Ambiguities in pseudoscalar-meson photoproduction, arising from incomplete experimental data, have analogs in pion-nucleon scattering. Amplitude ambiguities have important implications for the problems of amplitude extraction and resonance identification in partial-wave analysis. The effect of these ambiguities on observables is described. We compare our results with those found in earlier studies.

Amplitude ambiguities in pseudoscalar meson photoproduction

We consider the problem of determining amplitudes from observables for the case of pseudoscalar meson photoproduction. We find a number of surprisingly simple constraints which give necessary conditions for a complete set of measurements. These results contradict one of the selection rules derived previously.

Do we have three $S_{11}$ resonances in the second resonance region?

We review the status of the $S_{11}$ N$^*$ resonances in light of some recent theoretical and phenomenological results. Whereas the quark model predicts two such resonances around 1.6 GeV, there is considerable evidence for a third $S_{11}$ resonance in this energy range. This suggests that a $KΣ$ or $KΛ$ quasi-bound state may indeed exist below the kaon production threshold. We show that kaon production experiments, in particular $K^0$ photoproduction off nucleons, would be very sensitive to the existence of the third $S_{11}$ resonance.

An updated analysis of NN elastic scattering data to 1.6 GeV

An energy-dependent and set of single-energy partial-wave analyses of $NN$ elastic scattering data have been completed. The fit to 1.6~GeV has been supplemented with a low-energy analysis to 400 MeV. Using the low-energy fit, we study the sensitivity of our analysis to the choice of $πNN$ coupling constant. We also comment on the possibility of fitting $np$ data alone. These results are compared with those found in the recent Nijmegen analyses. (Figures may be obtained from the authors upon request.)

Analysis of $π$d elastic scattering data to 500 MeV

An energy-dependent and a set of single-energy partial-wave analyses of $π$d elastic scattering data have been completed. Amplitudes are presented for pion laboratory kinetic energies up to 500~MeV. These results are compared with those found in other recent analyses. We comment on the present database and make suggestions for future work. ( Figures are available from the authors upon request. )
