The Hardy averaging operator between Orlicz spaces and a new gauge functional characterizing a given Orlicz space

We prove that the largest Orlicz space into which the Hardy averaging operator maps coincides with the largest rearrangement-invariant (r.i.) space mapping into that space; in other words, the optimal Orlicz domain is automatically the optimal r.i.\ domain. More generally, we show that every Luxemburg--Orlicz norm is equivalent to a sublinear functional which makes more computable a certain expression for a dual norm arising in the $\K$-theory of interpolation. As applications we obtain Orlicz-space mapping properties for the Hardy--Littlewood maximal function, approximate identities and Calder\'on--Zygmund singular integral operators. These mapping properties are shown to be optimal for the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function and the approximate identities.

Characterization of the boundedness of the segment multiplier on rearrangement-invariant spaces

Given a rearrangement-invariant (r.i.) space X, we show that the segment multiplier, the truncated Hilbert transform, and the discrete Hilbert transform (on the associated discretized space) are bounded on X simultaneously. Moreover, this boundedness is characterized by a condition on a pair of Boyd-type indices. We also exhibit an r.i. space on which the segment multiplier is bounded while the (non-truncated) Hilbert transform fails to be bounded.

The Fourier transform on Rearrangement-Invariant Spaces

We study inequalities of the form \begin{equation*} \rho ( \lvert \hat{f} \rvert) \leq C \sigma(f) < \infty, \end{equation*} with $f \in L_{1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, the Lebesgue-integrable functions on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and \begin{equation*} \hat{f}(\xi) := \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} f(x) \, e^{- 2 \pi i \xi \cdot x} dx, \ \ \ \xi \in \mathbb{R}^n. \end{equation*} The functionals $\rho$ and $\sigma$ are so-called rearrangement-invariant (r.i.) norms on $M_{+}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, the nonnegative measurable functions on $\mathbb{R}^n$. Results first proved in the general context of r.i. spaces are then both specialized and expanded on in the special cases of Orlicz spaces and of Lorentz Gamma spaces.

Orlicz-Lorentz Gauge Functional Inequalities for Positive Integral Operators. Revised Version

Let $f \in M_+(\R_+)$, the class of nonnegative, Lebesgure-measurable functions on $\R_+=(0, \infty)$. We deal with integral operators of the form \[ (T_Kf)(x)=\int_{\R_+}K(x,y)f(y)\, dy, \quad x \in \R_+, \] with $K \in M_+(\R_+^2)$. We are interested in inequalities \[ \rho_{1}((T_Kf)^*)\leq C\rho_2(f^*), \] in which $\rho_1$ and $\rho_2$ are functionals on functions $h \in M_+(\R_+)$, and \[ h^*(t)=\mu_h^{-1}(t), \quad t \in \R_+, \] where \[ \mu_h(\lambda)=|\{x \in \R_+: \, h(x)> \lambda\}|, \lambda \in \R_+. \] Specifically, $\rho_1$ and $\rho_2$ are so-called Orlicz-Lorentz gauge functionals of the type \[ \rho(h)=\rho_{\Phi, u}(h)=\inf\left\{\lambda>0:\, \int_{\R_+}\Phi\left(\frac{h(x)}{\lambda}\right)u(x)\, dx \leq 1\right\}, \quad h \in M_+(\R_+); \] here $\Phi(x)=\int_0^x\phi(y)\, dy$, $\phi$ an increasing function mapping $\R_+$ onto itself and $u\in M_+(\R_+)$.

A sharp form of the Marcinkiewicz Interpolation Theorem for Orlicz spaces

An extension of Marcinkiewicz Interpolation Theorem, allowing intermediate spaces of Orlicz type, is proved. This generalization yields a necessary and sufficient condition so that every quasilinear operator, which maps the set, $S(X,\mu)$, of all $\mu$-measurable simple functions on $\sigma$- finite measure space $(X,\mu)$ into $M(Y,\nu)$, the class of $\nu$-measurable functions on $\sigma$- finite measure space $(Y,\nu)$, and satisfies endpoint estimates of type: $1 < p< \infty$, $1 \leq r < \infty$, \begin{equation*} \lambda \, \nu \left( \left\lbrace y \in Y : |(Tf)(y)| > \lambda \right\rbrace \right)^{\frac{1}{p}} \leq C_{p,r} \left( \int_{\mathbb{R_+}} \mu \left( \left\lbrace x \in X : |(f)(x)| > t \right\rbrace \right)^{\frac{r}{p}} t^{r-1}dt \right)^{\frac{1}{r}}, \end{equation*} for all $f \in S(X,\mu)$ and $\lambda \in \mathbb{R_+}$; is bounded from an Orlicz space into another.

An estimate of the root mean square error incurred when approximating an $f \in L^2({\mathbb{R}})$ by a partial sum of its Hermite series

Let $f$ be a band-limited function in $L^2({\mathbb{R}})$. Fix $T >0$ and suppose $f^{\prime}$ exists and is integrable on $[-T, T]$. This paper gives a concrete estimate of the error incurred when approximating $f$ in the root mean square by a partial sum of its Hermite series. Specifically, we show, for $K=2n, \quad n \in Z_+,$ $$ \left[\frac{1}{2T}\int_{-T}^T[f(t)-(S_Kf)(t)]^2dt\right]^{1/2}\leq \left(1+\frac 1K\right)\left(\left[ \frac{1}{2T}\int_{|t|> T}f(t)^2dt\right]^{1/2} +\left[\frac{1}{2T} \int_{|\omega|>N}|\hat f(\omega)|^2d\omega\right]^{1/2} \right) +\frac{1}{K}\left[\frac{1}{2T}\int_{|t|\leq T}f_N(t)^2dt\right]^{1/2} +\frac{1}{\pi}\left(1+\frac{1}{2K}\right)S_a(K,T), $$ in which $S_Kf$ is the $K$-th partial sum of the Hermite series of $f, \hat f $ is the Fourier transform of $f$, $\displaystyle{N=\frac{\sqrt{2K+1}+% \sqrt{2K+3}}{2}}$ and $f_N=(\hat f \chi_{(-N,N)})^\vee(t)=\frac{1}{\pi}\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}\frac{\sin (N(t-s))}{t-s}f(s)ds$. An explicit upper bound is obtained for $S_{a}(K,T)$.

An asymptotically sharp form of Ball's integral inequality

We solve the open problem of determining the second order term in the asymptotic expansion of the integral in Ball's integral inequality. In fact, we provide a method by which one can compute any term in the expansion. We also indicate how to derive an asymptotically sharp form of a generalized Ball's integral inequality.

Dilation-commuting operators on power-weighted Orlicz classes

Let $\Phi_1$ and $\Phi_2$ be nondecreasing functions from $\mathbb{R_+}=(0,\infty)$ onto itself. For $i=1,2$ and $\gamma \in \mathbb{R}$, define the Orlicz class $L_{\Phi_{i}}(\mathbb{R_+})$ to be the set of Lebesgue-measurable functions $f$ on $\mathbb{R_+}$ such that \begin{equation*} \int_{\mathbb{R_+}} \Phi_{i} \left( k|(Tf)(t)| \right) t^{\gamma}dt < \infty \end{equation*} for some $k>0$. Our goal in this paper is to find conditions on $\Phi_1$, $\Phi_2$, $\gamma$ and an operator $T$ so that the assertions \begin{equation} T : L_{\Phi_2,t^{\gamma}}(\mathbb{R_+}) \rightarrow L_{\Phi_1,t^{\gamma}}(\mathbb{R_+}), \tag{I} \end{equation} and \begin{equation}\label{modularA} \int_{\mathbb{R_+}} \Phi_1 \left( |(Tf)(t)| \right)t^{\gamma}dt \leq K \int_{\mathbb{R_+}} \Phi_2 \left( K|f(s)| \right)s^{\gamma}ds, \tag{M} \end{equation} in which $K>0$ is independent of $f$, say, simple on $\mathbb{R_+}$, are equivalent and to then find necessary and sufficient conditions in order that (\ref{modularA}) holds.

A New Algorithm for Approximating the Least Concave Majorant

The least concave majorant, $\hat F$, of a continuous function $F$ on a closed interval, $I$, is defined by \[ \hat F (x) = \inf \left\{ G(x): G \geq F, G \mbox{ concave}\right\},\; x \in I. \] We present here an algorithm, in the spirit of the Jarvis March, to approximate the least concave majorant of a differentiable piecewise polynomial function of degree at most three on $I$. Given any function $F \in \mathcal{C}^4(I)$, it can be well-approximated on $I$ by a clamped cubic spline $S$. We show that $\hat S$ is then a good approximation to $\hat F$. We give two examples, one to illustrate, the other to apply our algorithm.

Approximation of almost time and band limited functions I: Hermite expansions

The aim of this paper is to investigate the quality of approximation of almost time and band limited functions by its expansion in the Hermite and scaled Hermite basis. As a corollary, this allows us to obtain the rate of convergence of the Hermite expansion of function in the $L^2$-Sobolev space with fixed compact support.

The Rearrangement-Invariant space $\Gamma_{p,\phi}$

Fix $b\in (0,\infty)$ and $p\in (1,\infty)$. Let $\phi$ be a positive measurable function on $I_b:=(0,b)$. Define the Lorentz Gamma norm, $\r_{p,\phi}$, at the measurable function $f:\R+\to\R+$ by $\rph(f):=[\int_0^bf^{**}(t)^p\phi(t)dt]^{\frac1p}$, in which $f^{**}(t):=t^{-1}\int_0^tf^{*}(s)ds$, where $f^*(t):=\mu_f^{-1}(t)$, with $\mu_f(s):=|\{x\in I_b: |f(x)|>s\}|$. Our aim in this paper is to study the rearrangement-invariant space determined by $\rph$. In particular, we determine its K\"othe dual and its Boyd indices. Using the latter a sufficient condition is given for a Cald\'eron-Zygmund operator to map such a space into itself.
