Thermalization with Gaussian Quantum Cellular Automata

We study the long-time dynamics of many-body bosonic lattice systems under translation-invariant Gaussian quantum cellular automata. We formulate two sets of conditions on GQCAs which separately guarantee thermalization of any state on the local Weyl algebra to the infinite temperature state, whenever the state is locally normal and has uniformly bounded particle density. Our main intermediate result is a quantum many-body generalization of the classic Riemann-Lebesgue lemma which is a bound on expectation values of local Weyl operators involving their support and the state's particle density.

Anomalies on the Lattice, Homotopy of Quantum Cellular Automata, and a Spectrum of Invertible States

We develop a rigorous topological theory of anomalies on the lattice, which are obstructions to gauging global symmetries and the existence of trivial symmetric states. We also construct $\Omega$-spectra of a class of invertible states and quantum cellular automata, which allows us to classify both anomalies and symmetry protected topological phases up to blend equivalence.

A Classification of Invertible Stabilizer Codes

We develop a framework for the classification of invertible translation-invariant stabilizer codes modulo condensation and stabilization with simple codes. Our stabilizer codes generalize the Pauli codes: they are extracted from local commuting projector Hamiltonians whose terms are made of local alphabets more general than the Pauli operators. In particular, not all such codes can be entangled/disentangled with Clifford Quantum Cellular Automata. We compute their Witt-equivalence classes in any spatial dimension in terms of relative L-theory groups. In particular, we show that the group of equivalence classes of such codes in three spatial dimensions is isomorphic to the Witt group of abelian topological orders in two spatial dimensions. In four spatial dimensions we obtain a group of order two, conjecturally corresponding to the non-trivial invertible phase. Additionally, we propose a representing spectrum for the generalized cohomology theory corresponding to the invertible stabilizer codes.

An Algebraic Theory of Gapped Domain Wall Partons

The entanglement bootstrap program has generated new quantum numbers associated with degrees of freedom living on gapped domain walls between topological phases in two dimensions. Most fundamental among these are the so-called "parton" quantum numbers, which give rise to a zoo of composite sectors. In this note, we propose a categorical description of partons. Along the way, we make contact with ideas from generalized symmetries and SymTFT.

Parametrized topological phases in 1d and T-duality

There are families of physical systems that cannot be adiabatically evolved to the trivial system uniformly across the parameter space, even if each system in the family belongs to the trivial phase. The obstruction is measured by higher Berry class. We analyze families of topological systems in 1+1d using families of invertible TQFTs and families of RG fixed states of spin chains. We use the generalized matrix-product states to describe RG fixed points of all translation invariant pure splits states on spin chains. Families of such fixed points correspond to bundles of Hilbert-Schmidt operators. There exists a global MPS parametrization of the family if and only if the latter bundle is trivial. We propose a novel duality of parametrized topological phases which is an avatar of the T-duality in string theory. The duality relates families with different parameter spaces and different higher Berry classes. Mathematically, the T-duality is realized by gauging the circle action on the continuous trace algebra generated by parametrized matrix-product tensors.

Homotopy Classification of loops of Clifford unitaries

Clifford quantum circuits are elementary invertible transformations of quantum systems that map Pauli operators to Pauli operators. We study periodic one-parameter families of Clifford circuits, called loops of Clifford circuits, acting on $\mathsf{d}$-dimensional lattices of prime $p$-dimensional qudits. We propose to use the notion of algebraic homotopy to identify topologically equivalent loops. We calculate homotopy classes of such loops for any odd $p$ and $\mathsf{d}=0,1,2,3$, and $4$. Our main tool is the Hermitian K-theory, particularly a generalization of the Maslov index from symplectic geometry. We observe that the homotopy classes of loops of Clifford circuits in $(\mathsf{d}+1)$-dimensions coincide with the quotient of the group of Clifford Quantum Cellular Automata modulo shallow circuits and lattice translations in $\mathsf{d}$-dimensions.

When Does A Three-Dimensional Chern-Simons-Witten Theory Have A Time Reversal Symmetry?

In this paper, we completely characterize time-reversal invariant three-dimensional Chern-Simons gauge theories with torus gauge group. At the level of the Lagrangian, toral Chern-Simons theory is defined by an integral lattice, while at the quantum level, it is entirely determined by a quadratic function on a finite Abelian group and an integer mod 24. We find that quantum time-reversally symmetric theories can be defined by classical Lagrangians defined by integral lattices which have self-perpendicular embeddings into a unimodular lattice. We find that the quantum toral Chern-Simons theory admits a time-reversal symmetry iff the higher Gauss sums of the associated modular tensor category are real. We conjecture that the reality of the higher Gauss sums is necessary and sufficient for a general non-Abelian Chern-Simons to admit quantum T-symmetry.

Dyson's Classification And Real Division Superalgebras

It is well-known that unitary irreducible representations of groups can be usefully classified in a 3-fold classification scheme: Real, Complex, Quaternionic. In 1962 Freeman Dyson pointed out that there is an analogous 10-fold classification of irreducible representations of groups involving both unitary and antiunitary operators. More recently it was realized that there is also a 10-fold classification scheme involving superdivision algebras. Here we give a careful proof of the equivalence of these two 10-fold ways.
