Stability and robustness of mathematical quasicrystals under statistical convergence

In this work we address the stability and robustness of uniformly discrete point sets in Euclidean spaces. Firstly, we prove that if a sequence of point configurations contained in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is uniformly diffractive, converges rapidly enough to a discrete set $X$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and their diffraction measures $\widehat{\gamma_{X_n}}$ are asymptotically orthogonal with respect to the Lebesgue measure in $\mathbb{R}^d$, then $X$ is necessarily a quasicrystal. The convergence is addressed for a distance that quantifies the statistical closeness between two uniformly discrete point sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Secondly, motivated by their applications in the diffraction theory of quasicrystals, we establish the continuity of the Fourier Transform of quasicrystals in this topology. This continuity result, in turn, allows us to rigorously demonstrate that well-known robustness properties of quasicrystals against random errors remain stable under the statistical convergence considered. Some applications for rapidly-solidified quasicrystals are highlighted.

A remark on dimensionality reduction in discrete subgroups

In this short note, we prove a version of the Johnson-Lindenstrauss flattening Lemma for point sets taking values in discrete subgroups. More precisely, given $d,\lambda_0,N_0\in\mathbb{N}$ and $\epsilon\in \left(0,\frac{1}{2}\right)$ suitably chosen, we show there exists a natural number $k=k(d,\epsilon)=O\left(\frac{1}{\epsilon^2}\log d\right)$, such that for every sufficiently large scaling factor $\lambda\in\mathbb{N}$ and any point set $\mathcal{D}\subset\frac{\lambda}{\lambda_0}\mathbb{Z}^d\cap B(0,\lambda N_0)$ with cardinality $d$, there exists an embedding $F:\mathcal{D}\to\frac{1}{\lambda_0}\mathbb{Z}^k$, with distortion at most $\left(1+\epsilon+\frac{\epsilon}{\lambda\lambda_0}\right)$.

On rectifiability of Delone sets in intermediate regularity

In this work, we deal with Delone sets and their rectifiability under different classes of regularity. By pursuing techniques developed by Rivi\`ere and Ye, and Aliste-Prieto, Coronel and Gambaudo, we give sufficient conditions for a specific Delone set to be equivalent to the standard lattice by bijections having regularity in between bi-Lipschitz and bi-H\"older-homogeneous. From this criterion, we extend a result of McMullen by showing that, for any dimension $d\geq 1$, there exists a threshold of moduli of continuity $\mathcal{M}_d$, including the class of the H\"{o}lder ones, such that for every $\omega\in\mathcal{M}_d$, any two Delone sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ within a certain class cannot be distinguished under bi-$\omega$-equivalence. This class accounts for the decreasing rate of the density deviation of a Delone set, with respect to a limit density. We also extend a result due to Aliste, Coronel, and Gambaudo, which establishes that every linearly repetitive Delone set in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is rectifiable, by extending it to a broader class of repetitive behaviors. Moreover, we show that for the modulus of continuity $\omega(t)=t(\log(1/t))^{1/d}$, every $\omega$-repetitive Delone set in this class is equivalent to the standard lattice by a bi-$\omega$-homogeneous map. Finally, we address a continuous problem related to the previous ones about finding solutions to the prescribed volume form equation in intermediate regularity, thereby extending the results of Rivi\`ere and Ye. Some interesting research directions are highlighted.

Effective recovery of Fourier spectra and spectral approximation by finite groups

We prove a result on approximate recovery, with high probability, of subgroups of a finite nonabelian group $\Gamma$ from their random perturbations. We use this for ad-hoc sequences of $\Gamma_n$ while passing to the continuum limit, in order to obtain asymptotic almost sure recovery for rational lcsc nilpotent Lie groups. By comparison to limit theorems for groups of polynomial growth, it turns out that this setting is the natural general setting for recovery results, under polynomial growth assumptions on the $\Gamma_n$. This approach makes effective the convergence rate in previous Fourier recovery theorems in Euclidean space, and extends them to the nonabelian setting. A series of interesting further directions are highlighted by this approach.

Almost sure recovery in quasi-periodic structures

We study random perturbations of quasi-periodic uniformly discrete sets in the $d$-dimensional euclidean space. By means of Diffraction Theory, we find conditions under which a quasi-periodic set $X$ can be almost surely recovered from its random perturbations. This extends the recent periodic case result of Yakir from "Recovery the lattice from its random perturbations" IMRN 2020 (arXiv:200201508).

Delone sets that are not rectifiable under Lipschitz co-uniformly continuous bijections

We prove that there exist Delone sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d \geq 2$, which cannot be mapped onto the standard lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ by Lipschitz co-uniformly continuous bijections satisfying an asymptotic control on the lower distortion. The impossibility of the unrectifiability crucially uses ideas of Lipschitz regular maps recently introduced by M. Dymond, V. Kalu\v{z}a and E. Kopeck\'a.
