The braid group injects in the virtual braid group

The virtual braid groups are generalizations of the classical braid groups. This paper gives an elementary proof that the classical braid group injects into the virtual braid group over the same number of strands.

Classification of virtual string links up to cobordism

Cobordism of virtual string links on $n$ strands is a combinatorial generalization of link cobordism. There exists a bijection between virtual string links up to cobordisms and elements of the group $\mathbb{Z}^{n(n-1)}$. This paper also shows that virtual string links up to unwelded equivalence are classified by those groups. Finally, the related theory of welded string link cobordism is defined herein and shown to be trivial for string links with one component.

Knot theory and quantum computing

This paper explores the interactions between knot theory and quantum computing. On one side, knot theory has been used to create models of quantum computing, and on the other, it is a source of computational problems. Knot theory is often used to introduce topological idea to people without a formal mathematical background, and we are building on this tradition to discuss some of the deeper ideas of quantum computing.

Signature and concordance of virtual knots

We introduce Tristram-Levine signatures of virtual knots and use them to investigate virtual knot concordance. The signatures are defined first for almost classical knots, which are virtual knots admitting homologically trivial representations. The signatures and $\omega$-signatures are shown to give bounds on the topological slice genus of almost classical knots, and they are applied to address a recent question of Dye, Kaestner, and Kauffman on the virtual slice genus of classical knots. A conjecture on the topological slice genus is formulated and confirmed for all classical knots with up to 11 crossings and for 2150 out of 2175 of the 12 crossing knots. The Seifert pairing is used to define directed Alexander polynomials, which we show satisfy a Fox-Milnor criterion when the almost classical knot is slice. We introduce virtual disk-band surfaces and use them to establish realization theorems for Seifert matrices of almost classical knots. As a consequence, we deduce that any integral polynomial $\Delta(t)$ satisfying $\Delta(1)=1$ occurs as the Alexander polynomial of an almost classical knot. In the last section, we use parity projection and Turaev's coverings of knots to extend the Tristram-Levine signatures to all virtual knots. A key step is a theorem saying that parity projection preserves concordance of virtual knots. This theorem implies that the signatures, $\omega$-signatures, and Fox-Milnor criterion can be lifted to give slice obstructions for all virtual knots. There are 76 almost classical knots with up to six crossings, and we use our invariants to determine the slice status for all of them and the slice genus for all but four. Table 2 at the end summarizes our findings.

Virtual knot cobordism and bounding the slice genus

In this paper, we compute the slice genus for many low-crossing virtual knots. For instance, we show that 1295 out of 92800 virtual knots with 6 or fewer crossings are slice, and that all but 248 of the rest are not slice. Key to these results are computations of Turaev's graded genus, which we show extends to give an invariant of virtual knot concordance. The graded genus is remarkably effective as a slice obstruction, and we develop an algorithm that applies virtual unknotting operations to determine the slice genus of many virtual knots with 6 or fewer crossings.

Virtual knot groups and almost classical knots

We define a group-valued invariant of virtual knots and relate it to various other group-valued invariants of virtual knots, including the extended group of Silver-Williams and the quandle group of Manturov and Bardakov-Bellingeri. A virtual knot is called almost classical if it admits a diagram with an Alexander numbering, and in that case we show that the group factors as a free product of the usual knot group and Z. We establish a similar formula for mod p almost classical knots, and we use these results to derive obstructions to a virtual knot K being mod p almost classical. Viewed as knots in thickened surfaces, almost classical knots correspond to those that are homologically trivial. We show they admit Seifert surfaces and relate their Alexander invariants to the homology of the associated infinite cyclic cover. We prove the first Alexander ideal is principal, recovering a result first proved by Nakamura et al. using different methods. The resulting Alexander polynomial is shown to satisfy a skein relation, and its degree gives a lower bound for the Seifert genus. We tabulate almost classical knots up to 6 crossings and determine their Alexander polynomials and virtual genus.
