Emergence of Localized Surface Plasmons in Unpatterned Hyperdoped Polycrystalline Silicon

The ability to engineer localized surface plasmon resonances at large scale usually relies on precise nanoscale patterning. Here, we demonstrate that mid-infrared plasmonic responses can instead emerge in unpatterned polysilicon films composed of nanometric (5-50 nm) grains, challenging established design paradigms and eliminating the need for external nanostructuring. Using tailored out-of-equilibrium annealing conditions, we show that hyperdoped polysilicon layers exhibit enhanced light-matter interactions that can be tuned across the mid-infrared range. By combining advanced electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and finite-difference time-domain electrodynamic simulations, we demonstrate that these remarkable optical properties originate from naturally formed metal-dielectric interfaces at grain boundaries, which support localized surface plasmon resonances. Importantly, this result is universal and can be extended to any doped semiconductor system, regardless of the synthesis technique, provided that the grain size remains in the nanometric range. This work opens up a new field in plasmonics centered on polycrystalline semiconductors, paving the way for cost-effective systems that are fully compatible with microelectronic and photovoltaic technologies, and capable of significantly reshaping light-matter interactions in the infrared range.

Morphologies of caustics studied by catastrophe charged-particle optics

This paper explores the topologies of caustics observed in instruments that employ charged particles, such as electron and ion microscopes. These geometrical figures are studied here using catastrophe theory. The application of this geometrical theory to our optical situation has enabled us to analytically reproduce the behaviours of various caustics. The interest lies mainly in the universal nature of these results since our treatment requires no prior knowledge of the optical configuration, but only a smart definition of the control space. This universal approach has finally made it possible to extract mathematical relationships between the aberration coefficients of any optical system, which were hidden by the complexity of optical trajectories but revealed by the set of catastrophes in the control space. These results provide a glimpse for future applications of caustics in the development of new corrected optical systems, especially for ions-based devices.

High magnetic field spin-valley-split Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in a WSe$_2$ monolayer

We study Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in a p-type WSe$_2$ monolayer under very high magnetic field. The oscillation pattern is complex due to a large spin and valley splitting, in the non-fully-resolved Landau level regime. Our experimental data can be reproduced with a model in which the main parameter is the ratio between the Zeeman energy and the cyclotron energy. The model takes into account the Landau levels from both valleys with the same Gaussian broadening, which allows to predict the relative amplitude of the resistance oscillation originating from each valley. The Zeeman energy is found to be several times larger than the cyclotron energy. It translates into a large and increasing effective Land\'e factor as the hole density decreases, in the continuity of the values reported in the literature at lower carrier density.
