Divisibility of L-Polynomials for a Family of Curves

We consider the question of when the L-polynomial of one curve divides the L-polynomial of another curve. A theorem of Tate gives an answer in terms of jacobians. We consider the question in terms of the curves. The last author gave an invited talk at the 12th International Conference on Finite Fields and Their Applications on this topic, and stated two conjectures. In this article we prove one of those conjectures.

Recursions associated to trapezoid, symmetric and rotation symmetric functions over Galois fields

Rotation symmetric Boolean functions are invariant under circular translation of indices. These functions have very rich cryptographic properties and have been used in different cryptosystems. Recently, Thomas Cusick proved that exponential sums of rotation symmetric Boolean functions satisfy homogeneous linear recurrences with integer coefficients. In this work, a generalization of this result is proved over any Galois field. That is, exponential sums over Galois fields of rotation symmetric polynomials satisfy linear recurrences with integer coefficients. In the particular case of $\mathbb{F}_2$, an elementary method is used to obtain explicit recurrences for exponential sums of some of these functions. The concept of trapezoid Boolean function is also introduced and it is showed that the linear recurrences that exponential sums of trapezoid Boolean functions satisfy are the same as the ones satisfied by exponential sums of the corresponding rotations symmetric Boolean functions. Finally, it is proved that exponential sums of trapezoid and symmetric polynomials also satisfy linear recurrences with integer coefficients over any Galois field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Moreover, the Discrete Fourier Transform matrix and some Complex Hadamard matrices appear as examples in some of our explicit formulas of these recurrences.

q-Analogue of Wilson's theorem

We give q-analogues of Wilson's theorem for the primes congruent 1 and 3 modulo 4 respectively. And q-analogues of two congruences due to Mordell and Chowla are also established.

Symmetric Pascal matrices modulo p

We study characteristic polynomials of symmetric matrices with entries ${i+j\choose i}$ the binomial coefficients, over finite fields.

Combinatorial proofs of q-series identities

We provide combinatorial proofs of some of the q-series identities considered by Andrews, Jimenez-Urroz and Ono [q-series identities and values of certain $L$-functions. Duke Math. J. 108 (2001), no. 3, 395--419].

Alternating sign matrices and tournaments

We settle a question of Bressoud concerning the existence of an explicit bijection from a class of oriented square-ice graphs to a class of tournaments. We give an algorithm constructing such a bijection.

Cubic identities for theta series in three variables

We introduce three-variable analogues of the theta series of Borwein and Borwein. We prove various identities involving these theta series including a generalization of the cubic identity of Borwein and Borwein.

Conference matrices and unimodular lattices

Conference matrices are used to define complex structures on real vector spaces. Certain lattices in these spaces become modules for rings of quadratic integers. Multiplication of these lattices by non-principal ideals yields simple constructions of further lattices including the Leech lattice.
