A variational approach to the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture

We give a variational proof of a version of the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture for twisted K\"ahler-Einstein currents, and use this to express the greatest (twisted) Ricci lower bound in terms of a purely algebro-geometric stability threshold. Our approach does not involve the continuity method or Cheeger-Colding-Tian theory, and uses instead pluripotential theory and valuations. Along the way, we study the relationship between geodesic rays and non-Archimedean metrics.

An arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel theorem for singular hermitian line bundles and cusp forms

We prove an arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel type theorem for semi-positive singular hermitian line bundles of finite height. In particular, the theorem applies to the log-singular metrics of Burgos-Kramer-K\"uhn. Our theorem is thus suitable for application to some non-compact Shimura varieties with their bundles of cusp forms. As an application, we treat the case of Hilbert modular surfaces, establishing an arithmetic analogue of the classical result expressing the dimensions of spaces of cusp forms in terms of special values of Dedekind zeta functions.

Regularity of plurisubharmonic upper envelopes in big cohomology classes

The goal of this work is to prove the regularity of certain quasi-plurisubharmonic upper envelopes. Such envelopes appear in a natural way in the construction of hermitian metrics with minimal singularities on a big line bundle over a compact complex manifold. We prove that the complex Hessian forms of these envelopes are locally bounded outside an analytic set of singularities. It is furthermore shown that a parametrized version of this result yields a priori inequalities for the solution of the Dirichlet problem for a degenerate Monge-Ampere operator; applications to geodesics in the space of Kahler metrics are discussed. A similar technique provides a logarithmic modulus of continuity for Tsuji's "supercanonical" metrics, which generalize a well-known construction of Narasimhan-Simha.

Convergence of Bergman measures for high powers of a line bundle

Let $L$ be a holomorphic line bundle on a compact complex manifold $X$ of dimension $n,$ and let $e^{-ϕ}$ be a continuous metric on $L.$ Fixing a measure $dμ$ on $X$ gives a sequence of Hilbert spaces consisting of holomorphic sections of tensor powers of $L.$ We prove that the corresponding sequence of scaled Bergman measures converges, in the high tensor power limit, to the equilibrium measure of the pair $(K,ϕ),$ where $K$ is the support of $dμ,$ as long as $dμ$ is stably Bernstein-Markov with respect to $(K,ϕ).$ Here the Bergman measure denotes $dμ$ times the restriction to the diagonal of the pointwise norm of the corresponding orthogonal projection operator. In particular, an extension to higher dimensions is obtained of results concerning random matrices and classical orthogonal polynomials.

Bergman kernels for weighted polynomials and weighted equilibrium measures of C^n

Various convergence results for the Bergman kernel of the Hilbert space of all polynomials in \C^{n} of total degree at most k, equipped with a weighted norm, are obtained. The weight function is assumed to be C^{1,1}, i.e. it is differentiable and all of its first partial derivatives are locally Lipshitz continuous. The convergence is studied in the large k limit and is expressed in terms of the global equilibrium potential associated to the weight function, as well as in terms of the Monge-Ampere measure of the weight function itself on a certain set. A setting of polynomials associated to a given Newton polytope, scaled by k, is also considered. These results apply directly to the study of the distribution of zeroes of random polynomials and of the eigenvalues of random normal matrices.

Bergman kernels and equilibrium measures for polarized pseudoconcave domains

Let X be a strictly pseudoconcave domain in a closed polarized complex manifold (Y,L) where L is a (semi-)positive line bundle over Y. Any given Hermitian metric on L, together with a volume form, induces by restriction to X a Hilbert space structure on the space of global holomorphic sections on Y with values in the k:th tensor power of L. In this paper the leading large k asymptotics for the corresponding Bergman kernels and metrics are obtained in terms of the curvature of L and of the boundary of X (undere a certain compatibility assumption). The convergence of the Bergman metrics is obtained in a very general setting where X is replaced by a compact subset. As an application the (generalized) equilibrium measure of the polarized pseudoconcave domain X is computed explicitely. Applications to the zero and mass distribution of random holomorphic sections and the eigenvaluedistribution of Toeplitz operators will appear elsewhere.

Growth of balls of holomorphic sections and energy at equilibrium

Let X be a compact complex manifold endowed with a big line bundle L. We define the energy at equilibrium of a weighted subset as the Monge-Ampere energy of the associated extremal plurisubharmonic weight. We prove the differentiability of the energy at equilibrium with respect to the weight, and show that this energy describes the asymptotic behaviour as k goes to infinity of the volume of the induced sup-norm unit ball in the space of global sections of kL. As a consequence of these results, we extend Rumely's Robin-type formula for the transfinite diameter. We also obtain an asymptotic description of the analytic torsion and extend Yuan's equidistribution theorem for algebraic points of small height to the case of a big line bundle.

Bergman kernels and equilibrium measures for line bundles over projective manifolds

Let L be a holomorphic line bundle over a compact complex projective Hermitian manifold X. Any fixed smooth hermitian metric h on L induces a Hilbert space structure on the space of global holomorphic sections with values in the k th tensor power of L. In this paper various convergence results are obtained for the corresponding Bergman kernels (i.e. orthogonal projection kernels). The convergence is studied in the large k limit and is expressed in terms of the equilibrium metric h_e associated to h, as well as in terms of the Monge-Ampere measure of h on a certain support set. It is also shown that the equilibrium metric h_e is in the class C^{1,1} on the complement of the augmented base locus of L. For L ample these results give generalizations of well-known results concerning the case when the curvature of h is globally positive (then h_e=h). In general, the results can be seen as local metrized versions of Fujita's approximation theorem for the volume of L.

Asymptotics of Bergman kernels

We give an elementary proof of the existence of an asymptotic expansion in powers of $k$ of the Bergman kernel associated to $L^k$, where $L$ is a positive line bundle. We also give an algorithm for computing the coefficients in the expansion.

Bergman kernels and equilibrium measures for ample line bundles

Let L be an ample holomorphic line bundle over a compact complex Hermitian manifold X. Any fixed smooth Hermitian metric on L induces a Hilbert space structure on the space of global holomorphic sections with values in the k:th tensor power of L. In this paper various convergence results are obtained for the corresponding Bergman kernels. The convergence is studied in the large k limit and is expressed in terms of the equilibrium metric associated to the fixed metric, as well as in terms of the Monge-Ampere measure of the fixed metric itself on a certain support set. It is also shown that the equilibrium metric has Lipschitz continuous first derivatives. These results can be seen as generalizations of well-known results concerning the case when the curvature of the fixed metric is positive (the corresponding equilibrium metric is then simply the fixed metric itself).

Holomorphic Morse inequalities on manifolds with boundary

Let X be a compact manifold with boundary and let L^k be a high power of a hermitian holomorphic line bundle over X. When X has no boundary, Demailly's holomorphic Morse inequalities give asymptotic bounds on the dimensions on the Dolbeault cohomology groups with values in L^k. We extend Demailly's inequalities to the case when X has a boundary by adding a boundary term expressed as a certain average of the curvature of the line bundle and the Levi curvature of the boundary. Examples are given that show that the inequalities are sharp and it is shown that they are compatible with hole filling. The most interesting case is when X is a pseudoconcave manifold with a positive line bundle L. If the curvature of L is conformally equivalent to the Levi curvature of the boundary, the Morse inequalities are shown to be equalities, so that the space of global sections of L have maximal asymptotic growth, i.e. L is big. The sharp examples show that the corresponding cohomology group of (0,1)-forms may have maximal asymptotic growth, as well, unless the conformal equivalence holds.

Super Toeplitz operators on line bundles

Let L^k be a high power of a hermitian holomorphic line bundle over a complex manifold X. Given a differential form f on X, we define a super Toeplitz operator T(f) acting on the space of harmonic (0,q)-forms with values in L^k, with symbol f. The asymptotic distribution of its eigenvalues, when k tends to infinity, is obtained in terms of the symbol of the operator and the curvature of the line bundle L, given certain conditions on the curvature. For example, already when q=0 this generalizes a result of Boutet de Monvel and Guillemin to semi-positive line bundles. The asymptotics are obtained from the asymptotics of the Bergman kernels of the corresponding harmonic spaces. Applications to sampling are also given.

Bergman kernels and local holomorphic Morse inequalities

Let X be a hermitian manifold and let L^k be a high power of a hermitian line bundle over X. Local versions of Demailly's holomorphic Morse inequalities are presented - after integration they yield the usual inequalities. The local weak inequalities hold on any hermitian manifold X, regardless of compactness and completeness. The proofs, which are elementary, are based on a new approach to pointwise Bergman kernel estimates, where the kernels are estimated by a model kernel in the standard complex space C^n.
