Varieties of minimal degree in weighted projective space

We initiate a study of varieties of minimal degree in weighted projective spaces. We call a weighted projective space $\mathbf{P}(w_0,\dots,w_n)$ divisible if $w_i \mid w_{i+1}$ for all $i$. We provide sharp bounds for when a non-degenerate subvariety of a divisible weighted projective space has minimal degree. We define a weighted notion of $1$-generic matrices and, in analogy with the classical theory, show that there is a theory of weighted determinantal scrolls. Moreover, we characterize precisely when these have minimal degree and determine their weighted $N_p$ properties, and tie this to two weighted notions of regularity. Finally, we propose conjectural bounds for more general weighted threefolds and pose several natural questions. Throughout, we highlight the differences between this theory and the classical case.

Cartwright-Sturmfels Hilbert Schemes

Let S be the Cox ring of a product of r projective spaces. In this paper, we study the Cartwright-Sturmfels Hilbert schemes of S, which are multigraded Hilbert schemes that only parametrize radical ideals. Our main result shows that these Hilbert schemes are always smooth and irreducible if the Picard rank r is at most 2. This result can be seen as a multigraded analogue of the famous theorems of Fogarty and Maclagan-Smith, where the Picard rank replaces the dimension of the ambient space.

Projectivity of the moduli of equidimensional branchvarieties

We resolve an open problem posed by Alexeev-Knutson on the projectivity of the moduli of branchvarieties in the equidimensional case. As an application, we construct projective moduli spaces of reduced equidimensional varieties equipped with ample linear series and subject to a semistability condition.

The Hilbert scheme of points on a threefold: broken Gorenstein structures and linkage

We investigate the Hilbert scheme of points on a smooth threefold. We introduce a notion of broken Gorenstein structure for finite schemes, and show that its existence guarantees smoothness on the Hilbert scheme. Moreover, we conjecture that it is exhaustive: every smooth point admits a broken Gorenstein structure. We give an explicit characterization of the smooth points on the Hilbert scheme of A^3 corresponding to monomial ideals. We investigate the nature of the singular points, and prove several conjectures by Hu. Along the way, we obtain a number of additional results, related to linkage classes, nested Hilbert schemes, and a bundle on the Hilbert scheme of a surface.

On the parity conjecture for Hilbert schemes of points on threefolds

Let $Hilb^d(A^3)$ be the Hilbert scheme of $d$ points in $A^3$, and let $T_z$ denote the tangent space to a point $z \in Hilb^d(A^3)$. Okounkov and Pandharipande have conjectured that $\dim T_z$ and $d$ have the same parity for every $z$. For points $z$ parametrizing monomial ideals, the conjecture was proved by Maulik, Nekrasov, Okounkov, and Pandharipande. In this paper, we settle the conjecture for points $z$ parametrizing homogeneous ideals. In fact, we state a generalization of the conjecture to Quot schemes of $A^3$, and we prove it for points parametrizing graded modules.

On Rees algebras of 2-determinantal ideals

Let I be the ideal of minors of a 2 by n matrix of linear forms with the expected codimension. In this paper we prove that the Rees algebra of I and its special fiber ring are Cohen-Macaulay and Koszul; in particular, they are quadratic algebras. The main novelty in our approach is the analysis of a stratification of the Hilbert scheme of determinantal ideals. We study degenerations of Rees algebras along this stratification, and combine it with certain squarefree Groebner degenerations.

A local study of the fiber-full scheme

We study some of the local properties of the fiber-full scheme, which is a fine moduli space that generalizes the Hilbert scheme by parametrizing closed subschemes with prescribed cohomological data. As a consequence, we provide sufficient conditions for cohomology to remain constant under Gr\"obner degenerations. We also describe a tangent-obstruction theory for the fiber-full scheme in analogy with the one for the Hilbert scheme.

Rational singularities of nested Hilbert schemes

The Hilbert scheme of points $\mathrm{Hilb}^n(S)$ of a smooth surface $S$ is a well-studied parameter space, lying at the interface of algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, representation theory, combinatorics, and mathematical physics. The foundational result is a classical theorem of Fogarty, stating that $\mathrm{Hilb}^n(S)$ is a smooth variety of dimension $2n$. In recent years there has been growing interest in a natural generalization of $\mathrm{Hilb}^n(S)$, the nested Hilbert scheme $\mathrm{Hilb}^{(n_1,n_2)}(S)$, which parametrizes nested pairs of zero-dimensional subschemes $Z_1 \supseteq Z_2$ of $S$ with $\mathrm{deg} (Z_i)=n_i$. In contrast to Fogarty's theorem, $\mathrm{Hilb}^{(n_1,n_2)}(S)$ is almost always singular, and very little is known about its singularities. In this paper we aim to advance the knowledge of the geometry of these nested Hilbert schemes. Work by Fogarty in the 70's shows that $\mathrm{Hilb}^{(n,1)}(S)$ is a normal Cohen-Macaulay variety, and Song more recently proved that it has rational singularities. In our main result, we prove that the nested Hilbert scheme $\mathrm{Hilb}^{(n,2)}(S)$ has rational singularities. We employ an array of tools from commutative algebra to prove this theorem. Using Gr\"obner bases, we establish a connection between $\mathrm{Hilb}^{(n,2)}(S)$ and a certain variety of matrices with an action of the general linear group. This variety of matrices plays a central role in our work, and we analyze it by various algebraic techniques, including square-free Gr\"obner degenerations, the Stanley-Reisner correspondence, and the Kempf-Lascoux-Weyman technique of calculating syzygies. Along the way, we also obtain results on classes of irreducible and reducible nested Hilbert schemes, dimension of singular loci, and $F$-singularities in positive characteristic.

The fiber-full scheme

We introduce the fiber-full scheme which can be seen as the parameter space that generalizes the Hilbert and Quot schemes by controlling the entire cohomological data. The fiber-full scheme $\text{Fib}_{\mathcal{F}/X/S}^\mathbf{h}$ is a fine moduli space parametrizing all quotients $\mathcal{G}$ of a fixed coherent sheaf $\mathcal{F}$ on a projective morphism $f:X \subset \mathbb{P}_S^r \rightarrow S$ such that $R^i{{f}_*}\left(\mathcal{G}(\nu)\right)$ is a locally free $\mathcal{O}_S$-module of rank equal to $h_i(\nu)$, where $\mathbf{h} = (h_0,\ldots,h_r) : \mathbb{Z}^{r+1} \rightarrow \mathbb{N}^{r+1}$ is a fixed tuple of functions. In other words, the fiber-full scheme controls the dimension of all cohomologies of all possible twistings, instead of just the Hilbert polynomial. We show that the fiber-full scheme is a quasi-projective $S$-scheme and a locally closed subscheme of its corresponding Quot scheme. In the context of applications, we demonstrate that the fiber-full scheme provides the natural parameter space for arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay and arithmetically Gorenstein schemes with fixed cohomological data, and for square-free Gr\"obner degenerations.

The Hilbert scheme of a pair of linear spaces is a Mori dream space

Let $H_{a,b}^n$ denote the component of the Hilbert scheme whose general point parameterizes an $a$-plane union a $b$-plane meeting transversely in $\mathbf{P}^n$. We describe the effective and nef cones of $H_{a,b}^n$ and determine when the component is Fano. Moreover, we show that $H_{a,b}^n$ is a Mori dream space for all values of $a,b,n$.

On the smoothness of lexicographic points on Hilbert schemes

We study the geometry of standard graded Hilbert schemes of polynomial rings and exterior algebras. Our investigation is motivated by a famous theorem of Reeves and Stillman for the Grothendieck Hilbert scheme, which states that the lexicographic point is smooth. By contrast, we show that, in standard graded Hilbert schemes of polynomial rings and exterior algebras, the lexicographic point can be singular, and it can lie in multiple irreducible components. We answer questions of Peeva-Stillman and of Maclagan-Smith.

On the tangent space to the Hilbert scheme of points in P3

In this paper we study the tangent space to the Hilbert scheme $\mathrm{Hilb}^d \mathbf{P}^3$, motivated by Haiman's work on $\mathrm{Hilb}^d \mathbf{P}^2$ and by a long-standing conjecture of Brian\c{c}on and Iarrobino on the most singular point in $\mathrm{Hilb}^d \mathbf{P}^n$. For points parametrizing monomial subschemes, we consider a decomposition of the tangent space into six distinguished subspaces, and show that a fat point exhibits an extremal behavior in this respect. This decomposition is also used to characterize smooth monomial points on the Hilbert scheme. We prove the first Brian\c{c}on-Iarrobino conjecture up to a factor of 4/3, and improve the known asymptotic bound on the dimension of $\mathrm{Hilb}^d \mathbf{P}^3$. Furthermore, we construct infinitely many counterexamples to the second Brian\c{c}on-Iarrobino conjecture, and we also settle a weaker conjecture of Sturmfels in the negative.

Hilbert schemes with two Borel-fixed points

We characterize Hilbert polynomials that give rise to Hilbert schemes with two Borel-fixed points and determine when the associated Hilbert schemes or their irreducible components are smooth. In particular, we show that the Hilbert scheme is reduced and has at most two irreducible components. By describing the singularities in a neighbourhood of the Borel-fixed points, we prove that the irreducible components are Cohen-Macaulay and normal. We end by giving many examples of Hilbert schemes with three Borel-fixed points.

The Hilbert scheme of a pair of linear spaces

Let $\mathcal{H}_{a,b}^n$ denote the component of the Hilbert scheme whose general point parameterizes an $a$-plane union a $b$-plane meeting transversely in $\mathbf{P}^n$. We show that $\mathcal{H}_{a,b}^n$ is smooth and isomorphic to successive blow ups of $\mathbf{Gr}(a,n) \times \mathbf{Gr}(b,n)$ or $\text{Sym}^2 \mathbf{Gr}(a,n)$ along certain incidence correspondences. We classify the subschemes parameterized by $\mathcal{H}_{a,b}^n$ and show that this component has a unique Borel fixed point. We also study the birational geometry of this component. In particular, we describe the effective and nef cones of $\mathcal{H}_{a,b}^n$ and determine when the component is Fano. Moreover, we show that $\mathcal{H}_{a,b}^n$ is a Mori dream space for all values of $a,b,n$.

Embeddings of quotient division algebras of rings of differential operators

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, let $X$ and $Y$ be smooth irreducible algebraic curves over $k$, and let $D(X)$ and $D(Y)$ denote respectively the quotient division rings of the ring of differential operators of $X$ and $Y$. We show that if there is a $k$-algebra embedding of $D(X)$ into $D(Y)$ then the genus of $X$ must be less than or equal to the genus of $Y$, answering a question of the first-named author and Smoktunowicz.
