Misspecification-Averse Estimation

We study optimal estimation when the likelihood may be misspecified. Building on tools from the theory of decision-making under uncertainty, we analyze a class of axiomatically grounded optimality criteria which nests several existing misspecification-robust objectives. Within this class, we introduce the constrained multiplier criterion, which allows for flexible misspecification attitudes. We prove a local asymptotic minimax theorem for this criterion, extending a classical efficiency bound to a limit experiment which incorporates moment-constrained misspecification concerns. We characterize asymptotically optimal estimators as Bayes decision rules under a flat prior and an exponentially tilted likelihood that incorporates the moment constraints, and show that feasible plug-in analogs are asymptotically optimal.

Effective Hamiltonians and Wilson--Polchinski renormalisation

We develop a novel approach to the Wilsonian renormalisation of Hamiltonians for 2-dimensional quantum field theories on the cylinder described in the UV by marginally relevant deformations of conformal field theories. To introduce a Wilsonian short-distance cutoff we make essential use of free field realisations of the full vertex operator algebra in the UV. Our method is intrinsically non-perturbative; we derive a Hamiltonian analogue of Polchinski's equation describing the flows of all couplings. As a primary example of our general method, we apply it to the marginal anisotropic deformation of the $\mathfrak{su}_2$ Wess--Zumino--Witten model at level 1, which is equivalent to the sine-Gordon model on the cylinder. In particular, we reproduce the standard renormalisation group flow of the sine-Gordon model near the Kosterlitz--Thouless point to second order in the couplings, a result usually derived using Lagrangian/path-integral methods.

Inertial Coordination Games

We analyze inertial coordination games: dynamic coordination games with an endogenously changing state that depends on (i) a persistent fundamental players privately learn about over time; and (ii) past play. The speed of learning determines long-run equilibrium dynamics: the risk-dominant action is played in the limit if and only if learning is slow such that posterior precisions grow sub-quadratically. This generalizes results from static global games and endows them with a learning foundation. Conversely, when learning is fast such that posterior precisions grow super-quadratically, shocks can propagate and generate self-fulfilling spirals.

Dynamic Random Choice

I study dynamic random utility with finite choice sets and exogenous total menu variation, which I refer to as stochastic utility (SU). First, I characterize SU when each choice set has three elements. Next, I prove several mathematical identities for joint, marginal, and conditional Block--Marschak sums, which I use to obtain two characterizations of SU when each choice set but the last has three elements. As a corollary under the same cardinality restrictions, I sharpen an axiom to obtain a characterization of SU with full support over preference tuples. I conclude by characterizing SU without cardinality restrictions. All of my results hold over an arbitrary finite discrete time horizon.
