Foldings in relatively hyperbolic groups

Carrier graphs of groups representing subgroups of a given relatively hyperbolic groups are introduced and a combination theorem for relatively quasi-convex subgroups is proven. Subsequently a theory of folds for such carrier graphs is introduced and finiteness results for subgroups of locally relatively quasiconvex relatively hyperbolic groups and Kleinian groups are established.

Automorphism groups of combinatorial Hantzsche-Wendt groups

Combinatorial Hantzsche-Wendt groups were introduced by W. Craig and P.A. Linnell. Every such a group $G_n$, where $n$ is a natural number, encodes the holonomy action of any $n+1$-dimensional Hantzsche-Wendt manifold. $G_2$ is the fundamental group of the classical Hantzsche-Wendt manifold -- the only one $3$-dimensional oriented flat manifold with non-cyclic holonomy group. In this article, we describe the structure of the automorphism and of the outer automorphism groups of combinatorial Hantzsche-Wendt groups.

Irreducible generating tuples of Fuchsian groups

L. Louder showed that any generating tuple of a surface group is Nielsen equivalent to a stabilized standard generating tuple i.e. $(a_1,\ldots ,a_k,1\ldots, 1)$ where $(a_1,\ldots ,a_k)$ is the standard generating tuple. This implies in particular that irreducible generating tuples, i.e. tuples that are not Nielsen equivalent to a tuple of the form $(g_1,\ldots ,g_k,1)$, are minimal. In a previous work the first author generalized Louder's ideas and showed that all irreducible and non-standard generating tuples of sufficiently large Fuchsian groups can be represented by so-called almost orbifold covers endowed with a rigid generating tuple. In the present paper a variation of the ideas from \cite{W2} is used to show that this almost orbifold cover with a rigid generating tuple is unique up to the appropriate equivalence. It is moreover shown that any such generating tuple is irreducible. This provides a way to exhibit many Nielsen classes of non-minimal irreducible generating tuples for Fuchsian groups. As an application we show that generating tuples of fundamental groups of Haken Seifert manifolds corresponding to irreducible horizontal Heegaard splittings are irreducible.

Meridional Rank of Knots Whose Exterior is a Graph Manifold

We prove for a large class of knots that the meridional rank coincides with the bridge number. This class contains all knots whose exterior is a graph manifold. This gives a partial answer to a question of S. Cappell and J. Shaneson, see problem 1.11 on Kirby's list.

Nielsen equivalence in a class of random groups

We show that for every $n\ge 2$ there exists a torsion-free one-ended word-hyperbolic group $G$ of rank $n$ admitting generating $n$-tuples $(a_1,\ldots ,a_n)$ and $(b_1,\ldots ,b_n)$ such that the $(2n-1)$-tuples $$(a_1,\ldots ,a_n, \underbrace{1,\ldots ,1}_{n-1 \text{times}})\hbox{ and }(b_1,\ldots, b_n, \underbrace{1,\ldots ,1}_{n-1 \text{times}})$$ are not Nielsen-equivalent in $G$. The group $G$ is produced via a probabilistic construction.

Meridional rank and bridge number for a class of links

We prove that links with meridional rank 3 whose 2-fold branched covers are graph manifolds are 3-bridge links. This gives a partial answer to a question by S. Cappell and J. Shaneson on the relation between the bridge numbers and meridional ranks of links. To prove this, we also show that the meridional rank of any satellite knot is at least 4.

Nielsen equivalence in small cancellation groups

Let $G$ be a group given by the presentation [ ,] where $k\ge 2$ and where the $u_i\in F(b_1,..., b_k)$ and $w_i\in F(a_1,..., a_k)$ are random words. Generically such a group is a small cancellation group and it is clear that $(a_1,...,a_k)$ and $(b_1,...,b_k)$ are generating $n$-tuples for $G$. We prove that for generic choices of $u_1,..., u_k$ and $v_1,..., v_k$ the "once-stabilized" tuples $(a_1,..., a_k,1)$ and $(b_1,...,b_k,1)$ are not Nielsen equivalent in $G$. This provides a counter-example for a Wiegold-type conjecture in the setting of word-hyperbolic groups. We conjecture that in the above construction at least $k$ stabilizations are needed to make the tuples $(a_1,..., a_k)$ and $(b_1,...,b_k)$ Nielsen equivalent.

Generating pairs of 2-bridge knot groups

We study Nielsen equivalence classes of generating pairs of Kleinian groups and HNN-extensions. We establish the following facts: - Hyperbolic 2-bridge knot groups have infinitely many Nielsen classes of generating pairs. - For any natural number N there is a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold whose fundamental group has N distinct Nielsen classes of generating pairs. - Two pairs of elements of a fundamental group of an HNN-extension are Nielsen equivalent iff they are so for the obvious reasons.

On the rank of Coxeter groups

We show that the standard generating set of a Coxeter group is of minimal cardinality provided that the non-diagonal entries of the Coxeter matrix are sufficiently large.

On invertible generating pairs of fundamental groups of graph manifolds

We study invertible generating pairs of fundamental groups of graph manifolds, that is, pairs of elements (g,h) for which the map g --> g^{-1}, h --> h^{-1} extends to an automorphism. We show in particular that a graph manifold is of Heegaard genus 2 if and only if its fundamental group has an invertible generating pair.

Destabilizing amalgamated Heegaard splittings

We construct a sequence of pairs of 3-manifolds each with torus boundary and with the following two properties: 1) For the result of a carefully chosen glueing of the nth pair of 3-manifolds along their boundary tori, the ratio of the genus of the resulting 3-manifold to the sum of the genera of the pair of 3-manifolds is less than 1/2. 2) The result of amalgamating certain unstabilized Heegaard splittings of the pair of 3-manifolds to form a Heegaard splitting of the resulting 3-manifold produces a stabilized Heegaard splitting that can be destabilized successively n times.

Kleinian groups and the rank problem

We prove that the rank problem is decidable in the class of torsion-free word-hyperbolic Kleinian groups. We also show that every group in this class has only finitely many Nielsen equivalence classes of generating sets of a given cardinality.

Acylindrical accessibility for groups acting on $\mathbf R$-trees

We prove an acylindrical accessibility theorem for finitely generated groups acting on $\mathbf R$-trees. Namely, we show that if $G$ is a freely indecomposable non-cyclic $k$-generated group acting minimally and $M$-acylindrically on an $\mathbf R$-tree $X$ then for any $ε>0$ there is a finite subtree $Y_ε\subseteq X$ of measure at most $2M(k-1)+ε$ such that $GY_ε=X$. This generalizes theorems of Z.Sela and T.Delzant about actions on simplicial trees.

Foldings, graphs of groups and the membership problem

We introduce a combinatorial version of Stallings-Bestvina-Feighn-Dunwoody folding sequences. We then show how they are useful in analyzing the solvability of the uniform subgroup membership problem for fundamental groups of graphs of groups. Applications include coherent right-angled Artin groups and coherent solvable groups.

Freely indecomposable groups acting on hyperbolic spaces

We obtain a number of finiteness results for groups acting on Gromov-hyperbolic spaces. In particular we show that a torsion-free locally quasiconvex hyperbolic group has only finitely many conjugacy classes of $n$-generated one-ended subgroups. We also show that the rank problem is solvable for the class of torsion-free locally quasiconvex hyperbolic groups (even though it is unsolvable for the class of all torsion-free hyperbolic groups). We apply our results to 3-manifold groups. Namely, suppose $G$ is the fundamental group of a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold fibering over a circle and suppose that all finitely generated subgroups of $G$ are topologically tame. We prove that for any $k\ge 2$ the group $G$ has only finitely many conjugacy classes of non-elementary freely indecomposable $k$-generated subgroups of infinite index in $G$.

Nielsen methods and groups acting on hyperbolic spaces

We show that for any positive integer $n$ there exists a constant $C(n)>0$ such that any $n$-generated group $G$, which acts by isometries on a $δ$-hyperbolic space (with $δ>0$), is either free or has a nontrivial element with translation length at most $δC(n)$.
