Universal set families for maximization of nonnegative submodular and XOS functions

We consider the question of designing a universal family of sets $F \subset 2^{[n]}$ such that for any function $f:2^{[n]} \to R_{\geq 0}$ in a certain class, we have $$\max_{S \in F} f(S) \geq c(n) \cdot \max_{S \subset [n]} f(S).$$ We prove that there is a family of subpolynomial size such that for any nonnegative submodular function, $c(n) = Ω(\frac{\log \log n}{\log n})$, and there is a family of logarithmic size such that $c(n) = Ω(\frac{1}{\log n})$. We also prove that pairwise independence (which achieves a constant factor for graph cut functions), or even $k$-wise independence, does not imply a bound better than $O(\frac{1}{\sqrt{\log n}})$ for submodular functions. On the other hand, we prove that for any polynomially representable subclass of nonnegative submodular functions (such as the matroid connectivity functions for matroid representable over $F_q$), a constant-factor universal family of polynomial size always exists. For absolute XOS functions (a class that we introduce, in the form $f(S) = \max_i |\sum_{j \in S} w_{ij} + c_i|$ where $w_{ij}, c_i \in R$), we design a family of polynomial size such that $c(n) \geq \sqrt{\frac{\log n}{n}}$, and prove that there is no polynomial-size family achieving a factor better than $O(\sqrt{\frac{\log n}{n}})$.

On efficient graph covers and steered random walks

We prove that the vertices of any $n$-vertex graph can be partitioned into pieces of radius $r = O(\log n)$ such that the sum of the sizes of their closed neighborhoods is at most $4n$. This answers a recent question of Bukh and Dubroff and directly yields an improvement to their upper bound on the optimal cover time of the $ε$-steered random walk. We also demonstrate that our bound on $r$ is best possible up to a constant factor for graphs with strong vertex expansion.

Characterizing graphs with high inducibility

For a positive integer $k$ and a graph $H$ on $k$ vertices, we are interested in the inducibility of $H$, denoted $\mathrm{ind}(H)$, which is defined as the maximum possible probability that choosing $k$ vertices uniformly at random from a large graph $G$, they induce a copy of $H$. It follows from the resolved Edge-statistics conjecture that if $H \not \in \{K_k, \bar K_k\}$, then $\mathrm{ind}(H) \leq 1 / e + o_k(1)$. Equality holds for the star graph $K_{1, k-1}$, the graph with a single edge on $k$ vertices and their complements. We prove that for all other graphs $H$, we have $\mathrm{ind}(H) \leq c + o_k(1)$ for an absolute constant $c < 1 / e$. Moreover, we explicitly characterize all graphs with inducibility bounded away from zero. Namely, we show that this is the class of graphs $H$ for which there is a set $V_0 \subseteq V(H)$ of bounded size with the property that all permutations of $V(H) \backslash V_0$ extend to an automorphism of $H$.
