Transitivity and an abelian Livsic theorem for covers

We show that the abelian Liv\v{s}ic theorem recently obtained by A. Gogolev and F. Rodriguez Hertz for null-homologous periodic orbits of homologically full Anosov flows continues to hold when restricted to periodic orbits which are trivial with respect to any regular cover for which the lifted flow is transitive.

Gurevic pressure and equidistribution for amenable extensions of countable state Markov shifts

We obtain a weighted equidistribution theorem for amenable skew product extensions of countable state Markov shifts satisfying the BIP property. We also show, without requiring the BIP property, that Gurevic pressure for an amenable skew product agrees with the Gurevic pressure for the abelianized system. This had been proved by Dougall and Sharp in the case where the base is a subshift of finite type. The equality of Gurevi\v{c} pressures is a key part of the proof of the equidistribution result.

Abelian Livsic theorems for Anosov flows

We give two short proofs of the abelian Livsi\v{c} theorem of Gogolev and Rodriguez Hertz. We show that these proofs may be extended to give new abelian Livsic theorems for positive density sets of null-homologous orbits and for amenable covers.

A non-symmetric Kesten criterion and ratio limit theorem for random walks on amenable groups

We consider random walks on countable groups. A celebrated result of Kesten says that the spectral radius of a symmetric walk (whose support generates the group as a semigroup) is equal to one if and only if the group is amenable. We give an analogue of this result for finitely supported walks which are not symmetric. We also conclude a ratio limit theorem for amenable groups.

Mel Spectrogram Inversion with Stable Pitch

Vocoders are models capable of transforming a low-dimensional spectral representation of an audio signal, typically the mel spectrogram, to a waveform. Modern speech generation pipelines use a vocoder as their final component. Recent vocoder models developed for speech achieve a high degree of realism, such that it is natural to wonder how they would perform on music signals. Compared to speech, the heterogeneity and structure of the musical sound texture offers new challenges. In this work we focus on one specific artifact that some vocoder models designed for speech tend to exhibit when applied to music: the perceived instability of pitch when synthesizing sustained notes. We argue that the characteristic sound of this artifact is due to the lack of horizontal phase coherence, which is often the result of using a time-domain target space with a model that is invariant to time-shifts, such as a convolutional neural network. We propose a new vocoder model that is specifically designed for music. Key to improving the pitch stability is the choice of a shift-invariant target space that consists of the magnitude spectrum and the phase gradient. We discuss the reasons that inspired us to re-formulate the vocoder task, outline a working example, and evaluate it on musical signals. Our method results in 60% and 10% improved reconstruction of sustained notes and chords with respect to existing models, using a novel harmonic error metric.

Zeta functions in higher Teichmuller theory

In this note we introduce zeta functions and L-functions for discrete and faithful representations of surface groups in PSL(d, R), for d >= 3. These are natural generalizations of the wellknown classical Selberg zeta function and L-function for Fuchsian groups, corresponding to the case d=2.We show that these complex functions have meromorphic extensions to the entire complex plane C.

Helicity, linking and the distribution of null-homologous periodic orbits for Anosov flows

This paper concerns connections between dynamical systems, knots and helicity of vector fields. For a divergence-free vector field on a closed $3$-manifold that generates an Anosov flow, we show that the helicity of the vector field may be recovered as the limit of appropriately weighted averages of linking numbers of periodic orbits, regarded as knots. This complements a classical result of Arnold and Vogel that, when the manifold is a real homology $3$-sphere, the helicity may be obtained as the limit of the normalised linking numbers of typical pairs of long trajectories. We also obtain results on the asymptotic distribution of weighted averages of null-homologous periodic orbits.

Statistics of multipliers for hyperbolic rational maps

In this article, we consider a counting problem for orbits of hyperbolic rational maps on the Riemann sphere, where constraints are placed on the multipliers of orbits. Using arguments from work of Dolgopyat, we consider varying and potentially shrinking intervals, and obtain a result which resembles a local central limit theorem for the logarithm of the absolute value of the multiplier and an equidistribution theorem for the holonomies.

Relative growth in hyperbolic groups

In this note we obtain estimates on the relative growth of normal subgroups of non-elementary hyperbolic groups, particularly those with free abelian quotient. As a corollary, we deduce that the associated relative growth series fail to be rational.

Anosov flows, growth rates on covers and group extensions of subshifts

The aim of this paper is to study growth properties of group extensions of hyperbolic dynamical systems, where we do not assume that the extension satisfies the symmetry conditions seen, for example, in the work of Stadlbauer on symmetric group extensions and of the authors on geodesic flows. Our main application is to growth rates of periodic orbits for covers of an Anosov flow: we reduce the problem of counting periodic orbits in an amenable cover $X$ to counting in a maximal abelian subcover $X^{\mathrm{ab}}$. In this way, we obtain an equivalence for the Gurevi\v{c} entropy: $h(X)=h(X^{\mathrm{ab}})$ if and only if the covering group is amenable. In addition, when we project the periodic orbits for amenable covers $X$ to the compact factor $M$, they equidistribute with respect to a natural equilibrium measure -- in the case of the geodesic flow, the measure of maximal entropy.

A Central Limit Theorem for Periodic Orbits of Hyperbolic Flows

We consider a counting problem in the setting of hyperbolic dynamics. Let $\phi_t : \Lambda \to \Lambda$ be a weak mixing hyperbolic flow. We count the proportion of prime periodic orbits of $\phi_t$, with length less than $T$, that satisfy an averaging condition related to a H\"older continuous function $f: \Lambda \to \mathbb{R}$. We show, assuming an approximability condition on $\phi$, that as $T \to \infty$, we obtain a central limit theorem.

Statistics in conjugacy classes in free groups

In this paper, we establish statistical results for a convex co-compact action of a free group on a CAT($-1$) space where we restrict to a non-trivial conjugacy class in the group. In particular, we obtain a central limit theorem where the variance is twice the variance that appears when we do not make this restriction.

Orbit counting in conjugacy classes for free groups acting on trees

In this paper we study the action of the fundamental group of a finite metric graph on its universal covering tree. We assume the graph is finite, connected and the degree of each vertex is at least three. Further, we assume an irrationality condition on the edge lengths. We obtain an asymptotic for the number of elements in a fixed conjugacy class for which the associated displacement of a given base vertex in the universal covering tree is at most $T$. Under a mild extra assumption we also obtain a polynomial error term.

Amenability, Critical Exponents of Subgroups and Growth of Closed Geodesics

Let $\Gamma$ be a (non-elementary) convex co-compact group of isometries of a pinched Hadamard manifold $X$. We show that a normal subgroup $\Gamma_0$ has critical exponent equal to the critical exponent of $\Gamma$ if and only if $\Gamma / \Gamma_0$ is amenable. We prove a similar result for the exponential growth rate of closed geodesics on $X / \Gamma$. These statements are analogues of classical results of Kesten for random walks on groups and of Brooks for the spectrum of the Laplacian on covers of Riemannian manifolds.
