The sPHENIX Forward Angle Spectrometer

sPHENIX is a major upgrade proposed for the PHENIX detector. As part of this proposal, a forward spectrometer to cover the rapidity range 1<eta<4 is in a conceptual stage to complement the detectors in the central region. The forward rapidity region is important for the study of high density of gluons in a nucleus, as well as for the measurement of the spin structure of the nucleon. Some of the basic physics goals and a possible detector configuration are outlined.

Summary of Experimental Results: Photons, Leptons and Heavy Quarks

This is a summary of experimental results on photons, leptons, and heavy quarks presented at Quark Matter 2008. A first measurement of the bottom to charm contribution to the lepton spectrum has given experimental indication for the suppression of charm and bottom. Excess dileptons have been observed and studied by both NA60 and PHENIX, which may arise from the early production of thermal dileptons and/or the modification of mesons.

An Experimental Overview of Results Presented at SQM 2006

I have been asked to give an critical overview on the experimental results shown in the conference with a emphasis of what has been learned and the challenges that are ahead in trying to understand the physics of the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma. I will not try to summarize all of the results presented, rather I will concentrate primarily on RHIC data from this conference. Throughout this summary, I will periodically review some of the previous results for those not familiar with the present state of the field.

The First 3 Years at RHIC- an Overview

This is an overview of the results from the first 3 years of RHIC experiments. RHIC is a collider built to accelerate nuclei to center of mass energies of 200 GeV per nucleon for the study of QCD in bulk systems. The most important result so far is the observation of the suppression of high p$_T$ hadrons in central Au-Au collisions followed by the subsequent null experiment where the same suppression was not seen in deuteron-Au collisions. The observed suppression is a final state effect in which a large amount of energy is lost by the fast parton as it penetrates the medium. This observation, together with measurements of the elliptic flow, leads to the conclusion that the energy density reached is at least 10 times that of a normal nucleon. The simplest and most economical explanation of these phenomenon is that the system is a dense, locally thermalized system of unscreened color charges.

Light Vector Mesons from dAu in PHENIX

A first measurement of the e+e-decay rate of phi mesons in dAu collisions from the PHENIX detector at RHIC and its comparison to the K+K- decay channel is described. The comparison of the two decay channels can be sensitive to chiral symmetry restoration.
