Fourier Dimension Estimates for Sets of Exact Approximation Order: The Badly-Approximable Case

We show for decreasing, positive approximation functions $\psi$ such that $\tau = \lim_{q \to \infty} \frac{\log \psi(q)}{\log q} < \frac{13 + \sqrt{73}}{8}$ and such that $q^2 \psi(q) \to 0$ that the set $\text{Exact}(\psi)$ of numbers approximable to the exact order $\psi$ has positive Fourier dimension. This implies that the set $\text{Exact}(\psi)$ contains normal numbers.

Root structures of polynomials with sparse exponents

For real polynomials with (sparse) exponents in some fixed set, \[ \Psi(t)=x+y_1t^{k_1}+\ldots +y_L t^{k_L}, \] we analyse the types of root structures that might occur as the coefficients vary. We first establish a stratification of roots into tiers, each containing roots of comparable sizes. We then show that there exists a suitable small parameter $\epsilon>0$ such that, for any root $w\in \mathbb{C}$, $B(w,\epsilon|w|)$ contains at most $L$ roots, counted with multiplicity. Our analysis suggests the consideration of a rough factorisation of the original polynomial and we establish the closeness of the corresponding root structures: there exists a covering of the roots by balls wherein a) each ball contains the same number of roots of the original polynomial and of its rough factorisation and b) the balls are strongly separated.

A note on the $L^p$ integrability of a class of B\^ochner-Riesz kernels

For a general compact variety $\Gamma$ of arbitrary codimension, one can consider the $L^p$ mapping properties of the B\^ochner-Riesz multiplier $$ m_{\Gamma, \alpha}(\zeta) \ = \ {\rm dist}(\zeta, \Gamma)^{\alpha} \phi(\zeta) $$ where $\alpha > 0$ and $\phi$ is an appropriate smooth cut-off function. Even for the sphere $\Gamma = {\mathbb S}^{N-1}$, the exact $L^p$ boundedness range remains a central open problem in Euclidean Harmonic Analysis. In this paper we consider the $L^p$ integrability of the B\^ochner-Riesz convolution kernel for a particular class of varieties (of any codimension). For a subclass of these varieties the range of $L^p$ integrability of the kernels differs substantially from the $L^p$ boundedness range of the corresponding B\^ochner-Riesz multiplier operator.
