Combining a Diffraction-Limited Coronagraph with Fiber Nulling: A Demonstration of Serially Coupling Different Nullers

We present experimental results of an efficient small-IWA ($\sim$1 $λ/D$) high contrast imaging approach realized by co-optimizing a coronagraph front-end with a fiber nulling 2nd stage. The setup includes the one-dimensional diffraction-limited coronagraph (1DDLC) and Parity Fiber Nuller (PFN). The 1DDLC has promising features (binary nuller, small inner working angles (IWAs)). Although the 1DDLC has the 2nd/4th-order sensitivity to spectral bandwidth and tilt aberrations, it outputs stellar leak due to wavelengths other than the design wavelength only as a flat wavefront on the Lyot-stop plane, preserving the same complex amplitude profile as an on-axis point source. The PFN after the 1DDLC erases the leak from the 1DDLC. For the wavelength 6% less than the coronagraph's design-center wavelength, we confirmed the contrast mitigation ability of $3.5\times10^{-5}$, which is about 1/20 times the value of the case with only 1DDLC, suggesting that the combined system works robustly against the broad spectral bandwidth. Future work needs to address the demonstration of the anticipated broadband robustness for the contrast level lower than about $10^{-5}$.

Japan's Possible Contributions for Coronagraph of the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO)

In this paper, we describe Japan's possible contributions for coronagraph of the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) based on our independent study. We are considering to contribute to the HOW coronagraph by science and hardware, based on Japan's experience for the SPICA coronagraph instrument, contributions to the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, and SCExAO for the Subaru telescope. Currently, hardware contributions of various scales, from large-scale to small components, are considered. As an example of the large-scale hardware case, the optical and mechanical layout of the entire infrared coronagraph is presented. Several individual high-contrast technologies are also briefly introduced, for which research is ongoing in Japan. In discussions, it is pointed out that both the inner working angle (IWA) and sensitivity are particularly critical for the NIR coronagraph. In this situation, dedicated observations of a small number of targets close to the solar system can be one of key science program in this situation, and designing consolidating science objectives, requirements, observation targets, and survey plans is important. It is essential to push the development of advanced coronagraphs that provide small IWAs. On the other hand, it is also necessary to prepare solutions that adopt more robust coronagraphs in parallel. How to coexist visible and NIR coronagraphs within constraints of volume, mass, budget etc. is an important issue. The international sharing for the coronagraph development should be carefully decided by international agreement. Although all of our studies may not be realized in contributions to the first generation of HWO instruments, we are considering Japan's multigenerational participation in the HWO to maximize outcomes of the HWO.

Reconstructing a large-scale matter-density contrast profile to reconcile Pantheon+ supernovae with DESI DR2 BAO in an inhomogeneous universe

The Hubble parameters measured by the DESI DR2 BAO observations show a significant discrepancy from the prediction of the standard cosmological model. This discrepancy, together with the long-discussed Hubble tension, may originate from large-scale inhomogeneities in the matter distribution. This interpretation is motivated by infrared galaxy surveys, which suggest that our galaxy resides within the $\sim300$ Mpc under-dense region known as the KBC void. In this study, we apply a linear order relation -- relating the horizon-scale Hubble parameter inferred from CMB observations and the local-scale Hubble parameter -- to the Pantheon+ Type Ia supernovae and the DESI DR2 BAO data. We show that a simple inhomogeneous cosmological model consisting of eight top-hat shells can consistently explain the Hubble parameters inferred from both observations. Based on the matter-density distribution, we also briefly discuss its possible impact on cosmological observables, including the magnitude--redshift relation, the kinematic Sunyaev--Zel'dovich effect, and the integrated Sachs--Wolfe effect.

Experimental Validation for Serial Conjunction of Diffraction-limited Coronagraph and Fiber Nuller

We report the experimental results of a serially conjoined nuller system, which combines a type of Lyot coronagraph with a fiber nuller. The utilized one-dimensional diffraction-limited coronagraph (1DDLC) has promising features (binary nuller, small inner working angles (IWAs)). Still, it has a performance that is highly sensitive to spectral bandwidth and tilt aberrations. Nevertheless, for the 1DDLC, wavelengths other than the design wavelength introduce leaks with a flat wavefront on the Lyot-stop plane, preserving the same complex amplitude profile as an on-axis point source. This property supports the concept of serially coupling additional nullers after the 1DDLC. The fiber-nulling unit employs a Lyot-plane mask, relay optics (1/100$\times$), and a single-mode fiber. The Lyot-plane mask splits the incoming beam -- comprising leakage from the 1DDLC and planetary light -- into four beams so that, in principle, the on-axis single-mode fiber does not couple with the on-axis leak from the 1DDLC. For the wavelength 6-\% less than the coronagraph's design-center wavelength, we confirmed the contrast mitigation ability of $3.5 \times 10^{-5}$, which is about 1/20 times the value of the case with only 1DDLC. The resultant value approximately reaches the 1DDLC's contrast mitigation ability at the design center wavelength demonstrated in the previous study, suggesting that the combined system works robustly against the broad spectral bandwidth. Future work needs to address the demonstration of the anticipated robustness for the contrast-mitigation level lower than about $10^{-5}$.

Experimental Verification of a One-Dimensional Diffraction-Limit Coronagraph

We performed an experimental verification of a coronagraph. As a result, we confirmed that, at the focal region where the planetary point spread function exists, the coronagraph system mitigates the raw contrast of a star-planet system by at least $1\times10^{-5}$ even for the 1-$λ/D$ star-planet separation. In addition, the verified coronagraph keeps the shapes of the off-axis point spread functions when the setup has the source angular separation of 1$λ/D$. The low-order wavefront error and the non-zero extinction ratio of the linear polarizer may affect the currently confirmed contrast. The sharpness of the off-axis point spread function generated by the sub-$λ/D$ separated sources is promising for the fiber-based observation of exoplanets. The coupling efficiency with a single mode fiber exceeds 50% when the angular separation is greater than 3--4$\times 10^{-1}λ/D$. For sub-$λ/D$ separated sources, the peak positions (obtained with Gaussian fitting) of the output point spread functions are different from the angular positions of sources; the peak position moved from about $0.8λ/D$ to $1.0λ/D$ as the angular separation of the light source varies from $0.1λ/D$ to $1.0λ/D$. The off-axis throughput including the fiber-coupling efficiency (with respect to no focal plane mask) is about 40% for 1-$λ/D$ separated sources and 10% for 0.5-$λ/D$ separated ones (excluding the factor of the ratio of pupil aperture width and Lyot stop width), where we assumed a linear-polarized-light injection. In addition, because this coronagraph can remove point sources on a line in the sky, it has another promising application for high-contrast imaging of exoplanets in binary systems.
