Generating Extended Mapping Class Groups with Two Periodic Elements

The extended mapping class group of a surface $Σ$ is defined to be the group of isotopy classes of (not necessarily orientation-preserving) homeomorphisms of $Σ$. We are able to show that the extended mapping class group of an $n$-punctured sphere is generated by two elements of finite order exactly when $n\not=4$. We use this result to prove that the extended mapping class group of a genus 2 surface is generated by two elements of finite order.

The kernel of the monodromy of the universal family of degree $d$ smooth plane curves

We consider the parameter space $\mathcal U_d$ of smooth plane curves of degree $d$. The universal smooth plane curve of degree $d$ is a fiber bundle $\mathcal E_d\to\mathcal U_d$ with fiber diffeomorphic to a surface $Σ_g$. This bundle gives rise to a monodromy homomorphism $ρ_d:π_1(\mathcal U_d)\to\mathrm{Mod}(Σ_g)$, where $\mathrm{Mod}(Σ_g):=π_0(\mathrm{Diff}^+(Σ_g))$ is the mapping class group of $Σ_g$. The main result of this paper is that the kernel of $ρ_4:π_1(\mathcal U_4)\to\mathrm{Mod}(Σ_3)$ is isomorphic to $F_\infty\times\mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z}$, where $F_\infty$ is a free group of countably infinite rank. In the process of proving this theorem, we show that the complement $\mathrm{Teich}(Σ_g)\setminus\mathcal{H}_g$ of the hyperelliptic locus $\mathcal{H}_g$ in Teichmüller space $\mathrm{Teich}(Σ_g)$ has the homotopy type of an infinite wedge of spheres. As a corollary, we obtain that the moduli space of plane quartic curves is aspherical. The proofs use results from the Weil-Petersson geometry of Teichmüller space together with results from algebraic geometry.
