Room temperature tunable coupling of single photon emitting quantum dots to localized and delocalized modes in plasmonic nanocavity array

Single photon sources (SPS), especially those based on solid state quantum emitters, are key elements in future quantum technologies. What is required is the development of broadband, high quantum efficiency, room temperature SPS which can also be tunably coupled to optical cavities which could lead to development of all-optical quantum communication platforms. In this regard deterministic coupling of SPS to plasmonic nanocavity arrays has great advantage due to long propagation length and delocalized nature of surface lattice resonances (SLRs). Guided by these considerations, we report experiments on the room temperature tunable coupling of single photon emitting colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) to localised and delocalised modes in plasmonic nanocavity arrays. Using time-resolved photo-luminescence measurement on isolated CQD, we report significant advantage of SLRs in realizing much higher Purcell effect, despite large dephasing of CQDs, with values of ~22 and ~ 6 for coupling to the lattice and localised modes, respectively. We present measurements on the antibunching of CQDs coupled to these modes with g(2)(0) values in quantum domain providing evidence for an effective cooperative behavior. We present a density matrix treatment of the coupling of CQDs to plasmonic and lattice modes enabling us to model the experimental results on Purcell factors as well as on the antibunching. We also provide experimental evidence of indirect excitation of remote CQDs mediated by the lattice modes and propose a model to explain these observations. Our study demonstrates the possibility of developing nanophotonic platforms for single photon operations and communications with broadband quantum emitters and plasmonic nanocavity arrays since these arrays can generate entanglement between to spatially separated quantum emitters.

LESSER: A Catalogue of Spectroscopically selected sample of Lyman-$α$ Emitters Lensed By Galaxies

We introduce the LEnSed laeS in the Eboss suRvey (LESSER) project, which aims to search for lensed Lyman-$α$ Emitters (LAEs) in the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS). The final catalog contains 361 candidate lensing systems. The lens galaxies are luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at redshift $0.4 < z < 0.8$, and the source galaxies are LAEs at redshift $2 < z < 3$. The spectral resolution of eBOSS ($\sim$2000) allows us to further identify the fine structures of Lyman-$α$ ($\rm Lyα$) emissions. Among our lensed LAE candidates, 281 systems present single-peaked line profiles while 80 systems show double-peaked features. Future spectroscopic/imaging follow-up observations of the catalog may shed light on the origin of diverse $\rm Lyα$ line morphology, and provide promising labs for studying low mass dark matter haloes/subhaloes.

ALMA [N ıı] 205 μm Imaging Spectroscopy of the Lensed Submillimeter galaxy ID 141 at redshift 4.24

We present the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observation of the Sub-millimeter galaxy (SMG) ID 141 at z=4.24 in the [N II] 205 $μ$m line (hereafter [N II]) and the underlying continuum at (rest-frame) 197.6 $μ$m. Benefiting from lensing magnification by a galaxy pair at z=0.595, ID 141 is one of the brightest z$>4$ SMGs. At the angular resolutions of $\sim1.2"$ to $1.5"$ ($1" \sim6.9$ kpc), our observation clearly separates, and moderately resolves the two lensed images in both continuum and line emission at $\rm S/N>5$ . Our continuum-based lensing model implies an averaged amplification factor of $\sim5.8$ and reveals that the de-lensed continuum image has the Sérsic index $\simeq 0.95$ and the Sérsic radius of $\sim0.18" (\sim 1.24$ kpc). Furthermore, the reconstructed [N II] velocity field in the source plane is dominated by a rotation component with a maximum velocity of $\sim 300$ km/s at large radii, indicating a dark matter halo mass of $\sim 10^{12}M_{\odot}$. This, together with the reconstructed velocity dispersion field being smooth and modest in value ($<100$ km/s) over much of the outer parts of the galaxy, favours the interpretation of ID 141 being a disk galaxy dynamically supported by rotation. The observed [N II]/CO (7-6) and [N II]/[C II] 158 $μ$m line luminosity ratios, which are consistent with the corresponding line ratio vs. far-infrared color correlation from local luminous infrared galaxies, imply a de-lensed star formation rate of ($1.8\pm 0.6)\times10^3M_\odot$/yr and provide an independent estimate on the size of the star-forming region $0.7^{+0.3}_{-0.3}$ kpc in radius.

Hawking Radiation and $P-v$ Criticality of Charged Dynamical (Vaidya) Black Hole in Anti-de Sitter Space

We study Hawking radiation and $P-v$ criticality of charged dynamical (Vaidya) black hole in Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space. By investigating the near horizon properties of scalar field, we derive Hawking temperature of dynamical charged (Vaidya) AdS black hole. Based on this result, by regarding the cosmological constant as the thermodynamic pressure, we investigate the analogy between the charged dynamical (Vaidya) AdS black holes in the ensemble with the fixed charge and van der Waals liquid-gas system in detail, including equation of state, $P-v$ diagram, critical point, heat capacities and critical exponents near the critical point. It is shown that the relationship among the critical pressure, critical volume, and critical temperature gets modified while the critical exponents are not affected by the dynamical nature of the black hole. We also find that, when the rate of change of the black hole horizon exceeds the critical value, the $P-v$ criticality of the charged dynamical (Vaidya) AdS black hole will disappear.

Thermal Dynamic Phase Transition of Reissner-Nordström Anti-de Sitter Black Holes on Free Energy Landscape

We explore the thermodynamics and the underlying kinetics of the van der Waals type phase transition of Reissner-Nordström anti-de Sitter (RNAdS) black holes based on the free energy landscape. We show that the thermodynamic stabilities of the three branches of the RNAdS black holes are determined by the underlying free energy landscape topography. We suggest that the large (small) RNAdS black hole can have the probability to switch to the small (large) black hole due to the thermal fluctuation. Such a state switching process under the thermal fluctuation is taken as a stochastic process and the associated kinetics can be described by the probabilistic Fokker-Planck equation. We obtained the time dependent solutions for the probabilistic evolution by numerically solving Fokker-Planck equation with the reflecting boundary conditions. We also investigated the first passage process which describes how fast a system undergoes a stochastic process for the first time. The distributions of the first passage time switching from small (large) to large (small) black hole and the corresponding mean first passage time as well as its fluctuations at different temperatures are studied in detail. We conclude that the mean first passage time and its fluctuations are related to the free energy landscape topography through barrier heights and temperatures.

Nonequilibrium dynamical transition process between excited states of holographic superconductors

We study the dynamics of the holographic $s$-wave superconductors described by the Einstein-Maxwell-complex scalar field theory with a negative cosmological constant. If the eigenfunction of the linearized equation of motion of the scalar field in the planar RNAdS black hole background is chosen as the initial data, the bulk system will evolve to the intermediate state that corresponds to the excited state superconductor on the boundary. The process can be regarded as the non-equilibrium condensation process of the excited state of holographic superconductor. When the linear superposition of the eigenfunctions is chosen as the initial data, the system will go through a series of the intermediate states corresponding to different overtone numbers, which can be regarded as the dynamical transition process between the excited states of holographic superconductor. Because the intermediate states are metastable, the bulk system eventually evolves to the stationary state that corresponds the ground state of the holographic superconductor. We also provide a global and physical picture of the evolution dynamics of the black hole and the corresponding superconducting phase transition from the funneled landscape view, quantifying the weights of the states and characterizing the transitions and cascades towards the ground state.

Few shot domain adaptation for in situ macromolecule structural classification in cryo-electron tomograms

Motivation: Cryo-Electron Tomography (cryo-ET) visualizes structure and spatial organization of macromolecules and their interactions with other subcellular components inside single cells in the close-to-native state at sub-molecular resolution. Such information is critical for the accurate understanding of cellular processes. However, subtomogram classification remains one of the major challenges for the systematic recognition and recovery of the macromolecule structures in cryo-ET because of imaging limits and data quantity. Recently, deep learning has significantly improved the throughput and accuracy of large-scale subtomogram classification. However often it is difficult to get enough high-quality annotated subtomogram data for supervised training due to the enormous expense of labeling. To tackle this problem, it is beneficial to utilize another already annotated dataset to assist the training process. However, due to the discrepancy of image intensity distribution between source domain and target domain, the model trained on subtomograms in source domainmay perform poorly in predicting subtomogram classes in the target domain. Results: In this paper, we adapt a few shot domain adaptation method for deep learning based cross-domain subtomogram classification. The essential idea of our method consists of two parts: 1) take full advantage of the distribution of plentiful unlabeled target domain data, and 2) exploit the correlation between the whole source domain dataset and few labeled target domain data. Experiments conducted on simulated and real datasets show that our method achieves significant improvement on cross domain subtomogram classification compared with baseline methods.

Constraining the inner density slope of massive galaxy clusters

We determine the inner density profiles of massive galaxy clusters (M$_{200}$ > $5 \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$) in the Cluster-EAGLE (C-EAGLE) hydrodynamic simulations, and investigate whether the dark matter density profiles can be correctly estimated from a combination of mock stellar kinematical and gravitational lensing data. From fitting mock stellar kinematics and lensing data generated from the simulations, we find that the inner density slopes of both the total and the dark matter mass distributions can be inferred reasonably well. We compare the density slopes of C-EAGLE clusters with those derived by Newman et al. for 7 massive galaxy clusters in the local Universe. We find that the asymptotic best-fit inner slopes of "generalized" NFW (gNFW) profiles, $γ_{\rm gNFW}$, of the dark matter haloes of the C-EAGLE clusters are significantly steeper than those inferred by Newman et al. However, the mean mass-weighted dark matter density slopes of the simulated clusters are in good agreement with the Newman et al. estimates. We also find that the estimate of $γ_{\rm gNFW}$ is very sensitive to the constraints from weak lensing measurements in the outer parts of the cluster and a bias can lead to an underestimate of $γ_{\rm gNFW}$.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: Stellar population correlates with stellar root-mean-square velocity $V_{\rm rms}$ gradients or total-density-profile slopes at fixed effective velocity dispersion $σ_{\rm e}$

Galaxy properties are known to correlate most tightly with the galaxy effective stellar velocity dispersion $σ_{\rm e}$. Here we look for {\em additional} trends at fixed $σ_{\rm e}$ using 1339 galaxies ($M_\ast \gtrsim 6\times10^9$ M$_\odot$) with different morphologies in the MaNGA (DR14) sample with integral-field spectroscopy data. We focus on the gradients ($γ_{\rm rms} \equiv σ(R_{\rm e}/4)/σ_{\rm e}$) of the stellar root-mean-square velocity ($V_{\rm rms} \equiv \sqrt{V^2 + σ^2}$), which we show traces the total mass density gradient $γ_{\rm tot}$ derived from dynamical models and, more weakly, the bulge fraction. We confirm that $γ_{\rm rms}$ increases with $σ_{\rm e}$, age and metallicity. We additionally find that these correlations still exist at fixed $σ_{\rm e}$, where galaxies with larger $γ_{\rm rms}$ are found to be older and more metal-rich. It means that mass density gradients contain information of the stellar population which is not fully accounted for by $σ_{\rm e}$. This result puts an extra constraint on our understanding of galaxy quenching. We compare our results with galaxies in the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulations and find that, at fixed $σ_{\rm e}$, similar trends exist with age, the bulge fraction, and the total mass density slope but, unlike observations, no correlation with metallicity can be detected in the simulations.

An accurate analytic mass model for lensing galaxies

We develop an analytic mass model for lensing galaxies, based on a broken power-law (BPL) density profile, which is a power-law profile with a mass deficit or surplus in the central region. Under the assumption of an elliptically symmetric surface mass distribution, the deflection angle and magnification can be evaluated analytically for this new model. We compute the theoretical prediction for various quantities, including the volume and surface mass density profiles of the galaxies, and the aperture and luminosity-weighted line-of-sight velocity dispersions, and compare them to those measured from the Illustris simulation. We find an excellent agreement between our model prediction and the simulation, which validates our modeling. The high efficiency and accuracy of our model manifests itself as a promising tool for studying properties of galaxies with strong lensing.

Simulating Kilonovae in the ΛCDM Universe

Kilonovae are optical flashes produced in the aftermath of neutron star-neutron star mergers (NNMs) or neutron star-black hole mergers (NBMs). In this work, we use the Millennium Simulation, combined with a semi-analytic galaxy formation model--GABE (Galaxy Assembly with Binary Evolution) which adopts binary stellar population synthesis models, to explore the cosmic event rate of kilonovae, and the properties of their host galaxies in a cosmological context. We find that model with supernova kick velocity of 0 km/s fits the observation best, in agreement with the exception of some formation channels of binary neutron star. This indicates that NNMs prefer to originate from binary systems with low kick velocities. With V$_{\rm kick}$=0 km/s, the cosmic event rate of NNMs and NBMs at z=0 are 283 Gpc$^{-3}$yr$^{-1}$ and 91 Gpc$^{-3}$yr$^{-1}$, respectively, marginally consistent with the constraint from LVC GWTC-1. For Milky Way-mass galaxies, we predict the NNM rate is $25.7^{+59.6}_{-7.1}$ Myr$^{-1}$, which is also in good agreement with the observed properties of binary neutron stars in the Milky Way. Taking all the NNMs into account in the history of Milky Way-mass galaxies, we find that the averaged r-process elements yield with A>79 in a NNM and NBM event should be 0.01 M$_{\odot}$ to be consistent with observation. We conclude that NGC 4993, the host galaxy of GW170817, is a typical host galaxy for NNMs. However, generally NNMs and NBMs tend to reside in young, blue, star-forming, late-type galaxies, with stellar mass and gaseous metallicity distribution peaking at $10^{10.65}$ M$_{\odot}$ and 8.72-8.85, respectively. By studying kilonovae host galaxies in the cosmological background, it is promising to constrain model details better when we have more events in the forthcoming future. (abridged)

Smart transformer Modelling in Optimal Power Flow Analysis

The smart transformer (ST) implemented using power electronics converters, has the capability of independent voltage control and reactive power isolation between its primary and secondary terminals. This capability provides a flexibility in the power system to support the voltage at the primary side and control the demand at the secondary side. Using this flexibility, the system power flow could, for example, be optimized for lower costs. This paper proposes an ST model suitable for OPF analysis. The effects of using multiple STs at different penetration levels, on the daily generation costs in an IEEE 39 bus test system are presented.

Consistent Classification with Generalized Metrics

We propose a framework for constructing and analyzing multiclass and multioutput classification metrics, i.e., involving multiple, possibly correlated multiclass labels. Our analysis reveals novel insights on the geometry of feasible confusion tensors -- including necessary and sufficient conditions for the equivalence between optimizing an arbitrary non-decomposable metric and learning a weighted classifier. Further, we analyze averaging methodologies commonly used to compute multioutput metrics and characterize the corresponding Bayes optimal classifiers. We show that the plug-in estimator based on this characterization is consistent and is easily implemented as a post-processing rule. Empirical results on synthetic and benchmark datasets support the theoretical findings.

Cosmology from the Chinese Space Station Optical Survey (CSS-OS)

The Chinese Space Station Optical Survey (CSS-OS) is a planned full sky survey operated by the Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST). It can simultaneously perform the photometric imaging and spectroscopic slitless surveys, and will probe weak and strong gravitational lensing, galaxy clustering, individual galaxies and galaxy clusters, active galactic nucleus (AGNs), and so on. It aims to explore the properties of dark matter and dark energy and other important cosmological problems. In this work, we focus on two main CSS-OS scientific goals, i.e. the weak gravitational lensing (WL) and galaxy clustering surveys. We generate the mock CSS-OS data based on the observational COSMOS and zCOSMOS catalogs. We investigate the constraints on the cosmological parameters from the CSS-OS using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. The intrinsic alignments, galaxy bias, velocity dispersion, and systematics from instrumental effects in the CSST WL and galaxy clustering surveys are also included, and their impacts on the constraint results are discussed. We find that the CSS-OS can improve the constraints on the cosmological parameters by a factor of a few (even one order of magnitude in the optimistic case), compared to the current WL and galaxy clustering surveys. The constraints can be further enhanced when performing joint analysis with the WL, galaxy clustering, and galaxy-galaxy lensing data. Therefore, the CSS-OS is expected to be a powerful survey for exploring the Universe. Since some assumptions may be still optimistic and simple, it is possible that the results from the real survey could be worse. We will study these issues in details with the help of simulations in the future.

Dark-matter-deficient galaxies in hydrodynamical simulations

Low mass galaxies are expected to be dark matter dominated even within their centrals. Recently two observations reported two dwarf galaxies in group environment with very little dark matter in their centrals. We explore the population and origins of dark-matter-deficient galaxies (DMDGs) in two state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations, the EAGLE and Illustris projects. For all satellite galaxies with $10^9 10^{13}$ M$_{\odot}$, we find that about $2.6\%$ of them in the EAGLE, and $1.5\%$ in the Illustris are DMDGs with dark matter fractions below $50\%$ inside two times half-stellar-mass radii. We demonstrate that DMDGs are highly tidal disrupted galaxies; and because dark matter has higher binding energy than stars, mass loss of the dark matter is much more rapid than stars in DMDGs during tidal interactions. If DMDGs were confirmed in observations, they are expected in current galaxy formation models.

Assessing the effect of lens mass model in cosmological application with updated galaxy-scale strong gravitational lensing sample

By comparing the dynamical and lensing masses of early-type lens galaxies, one can constrain both the cosmological parameters and the density profiles of galaxies. We explore the constraining power on cosmological parameters and the effect of the lens mass model in this method with 161 galaxy-scale strong lensing systems, which is currently the largest sample with both high resolution imaging and stellar dynamical data. We assume a power-law mass model for the lenses, and consider three different parameterizations for $γ$ (i.e., the slope of the total mass density profile) to include the effect of the dependence of $γ$ on redshift and surface mass density. When treating $δ$ (i.e., the slope of the luminosity density profile) as a universal parameter for all lens galaxies, we find the limits on the cosmological parameter $Ω_m$ are quite weak and biased, and also heavily dependent on the lens mass model in the scenarios of parameterizing $γ$ with three different forms. When treating $δ$ as an observable for each lens, the unbiased estimate of $Ω_m$ can be obtained only in the scenario of including the dependence of $γ$ on both the redshift and the surface mass density, that is $Ω_m = 0.381^{+0.185}_{-0.154}$ at 68\% confidence level in the framework of a flat $Λ$CDM model. We conclude that the significant dependencies of $γ$ on both the redshift and the surface mass density, as well as the intrinsic scatter of $δ$ among the lenses, need to be properly taken into account in this method.

SDSS--IV MaNGA : The Inner Density Slopes of nearby galaxies

We derive the mass weighted total density slopes within the effective (half-light) radius, $γ'$, for more than 2000 nearby galaxies from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey using Jeans-anisotropic-models applied to IFU observations. Our galaxies span a wide range of the stellar mass ($10^9$ $M_{\rm \odot}< M_* < 10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$) and the velocity dispersion (30 km/s $< σ_v <$ 300 km/s). We find that for galaxies with velocity dispersion $σ_v>100$ km/s, the density slope has a mean value $\langle γ^{\prime} \rangle = 2.24$ and a dispersion $σ_γ=0.22$, almost independent of velocity dispersion. A clear turn over in the $γ'-σ_v$ relation is present at $σ\sim 100$ km/s, below which the density slope decreases rapidly with $σ_v$. Our analysis shows that a large fraction of dwarf galaxies (below $M_* = 10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$) have total density slopes shallower than 1, which implies that they may reside in cold dark matter halos with shallow density slopes. We compare our results with that of galaxies in hydrodynamical simulations of EAGLE, Illustris and IllustrisTNG projects, and find all simulations predict shallower density slopes for massive galaxies with high $σ_v$. Finally, we explore the dependence of $γ'$ on the positions of galaxies in halos, namely centrals vs. satellites, and find that for the same velocity dispersion, the amplitude of $γ'$ is higher for satellite galaxies by about 0.1.

The Value of Misinformation and Disinformation

Information is a critical dimension in warfare. Inaccurate information such as misinformation or disinformation further complicates military operations. In this paper, we examine the value of misinformation and disinformation to a military leader who through investment in people, programs and technology is able to affect the accuracy of information communicated between other actors. We model the problem as a partially observable stochastic game with three agents, a leader and two followers. We determine the value to the leader of misinformation or disinformation being communicated between two (i) adversarial followers and (ii) allied followers. We demonstrate that only under certain conditions, the prevalent intuition that the leader would benefit from less (more) accurate communication between adversarial (allied) followers is valid. We analyzed why the intuition may fail and show a holistic paradigm taking into account both the reward structures and policies of agents is necessary in order to correctly determine the value of misinformation and disinformation. Our research identifies efficient targeted investments to affect the accuracy of information communicated between followers to the leader's advantage.
