The role of static disorder in negative thermal expansion in ReO3

Time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction and specific heat measurements were used to study the nature of thermal expansion in rhenium trioxide, an electrically conducting oxide with cubic symmetry. The temperature evolution of the lattice parameters show that ReO3 can exhibit negative thermal expansion at low temperatures and that the transition from negative to positive thermal expansion depends on sample preparation; the single crystal sample demonstrated the highest transition temperature, 300 K, and largest negative value for the coefficient of thermal expansion, alpha = -1.1(1)x 10^-6 K^-1. For the oxygen atoms, the atomic displacement parameters are strongly anisotropic even at 15 K, indicative of a large contribution of static disorder to the displacement parameters. Further inspection of the temperature evolution of the oxygen displacement parameters for different samples reveals that the static disorder contribution is greater for the samples with diminished NTE behavior. In addition, specific heat measurements show that ReO3 lacks the low energy Einstein-type modes seen in other negative thermal expansion oxides such as ZrW2O8.

Local structural origins of the distinct electronic properties of Nb-substituted SrTiO$_3$ and BaTi$O_3$

Near or less than 10% Nb substitution on the Ti site in perovskite SrTiO$_3$ results in metallic behavior, in contrast to what is seen in BaTiO$_3$. Given the nearly identical structure and electron counts of the two materials, the distinct ground states for low substitution have been a long-standing puzzle. Here we find from neutron studies of average and local structure, the subtle yet critical difference that we believe underpins the distinct electronic properties in these fascinating materials. While SrTi$_{0.875}$Nb_${0.125}$O$_3$ possesses a distorted non-cubic structure at 15 K, the BO$_6$ octahedra in the structure are regular. BaTi$_{0.875}$Nb$_{0.125}$O$_3$ on the other hand shows evidence for local cation off-centering whilst retaining a cubic structure.

Local structures of polar wurtzites Zn_{1-x}Mg_{x}O studied by Raman and {67}Zn/{25}Mg NMR spectroscopies and by total neutron scattering

Local compositions and structures of Zn_{1-x}Mg_{x}O alloys have been investigated by Raman and solid-state {67}Zn/{25}Mg nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, and by neutron pair-distribution-function (PDF) analyses. The E2(low) and E2(high) Raman modes of Zn_{1-x}Mg_{x}O display Gaussian- and Lorentzian-type profiles, respectively. At higher Mg substitutions, both modes become broader, while their peak positions shift in opposite directions. The evolution of Raman spectra from Zn_{1-x}Mg_{x}O solid solutions are discussed in terms of lattice deformation associated with the distinct coordination preferences of Zn and Mg. Solid-state magic-angle-spinning (MAS) NMR studies suggest that the local electronic environments of {67}Zn in ZnO are only weakly modified by the 15% substitution of Mg for Zn. {25}Mg MAS spectra of Zn_{0.85}Mg_{0.15}O show an unusual upfield shift, demonstrating the prominent shielding ability of Zn in the nearby oxidic coordination sphere. Neutron PDF analyses of Zn_{0.875}Mg_{0.125}O using a 2x2x1 supercell corresponding to Zn_{7}MgO_{8} suggest that the mean local geometry of MgO_{4} fragments concurs with previous density functional theory (DFT)-based structural relaxations of hexagonal wurtzite MgO. MgO_{4} tetrahedra are markedly compressed along their c-axes and are smaller in volume than ZnO_{4} units by ~6%. Mg atoms in Zn_{1-x}Mg_{x}O have a shorter bond to the $c$-axial oxygen atom than to the three lateral oxygen atoms, which is distinct from the coordination of Zn. The precise structure, both local and average, of Zn_{0.875}Mg_{0.125}O obtained from time-of-flight total neutron scattering supports the view that Mg-substitution in ZnO results in increased total spontaneous polarization.

Lattice instabilities in cubic pyrochlore Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

The oxide pyrochlore Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is in some ways analogous to perovskite PbTiO$_3$, in that Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ has two cations, Bi$^{3+}$ and Ti$^{4+}$ in oxidation states that are normally associated with a propensity to off-center. However, unlike PbTiO$_3$, Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is experimentally observed to remain cubic down to 2 K, while the only observed ionic displacements are local and incoherent. Here we report first-principles calculations of the zone-center phonons of the ordered cubic pyrochlore which reveal several lattice instabilities. An analysis of the structural energetics suggest that the ordered cubic pyrochlore is unstable with respect to distortion towards a ferroelectric ground state with a large polarization. Our results suggest a key role of a frustrated soft polar mode in the dielectric properties of bismuth pyrochlores.

Searching for hexagonal analogues of the half-metallic half-Heusler XYZ compounds

The XYZ half-Heusler crystal structure can conveniently be described as a tetrahedral zinc blende YZ structure which is stuffed by a slightly ionic X species. This description is well suited to understand the electronic structure of semiconducting 8-electron compounds such as LiAlSi (formulated Li$^+$[AlSi]$^-$) or semiconducting 18-electron compounds such as TiCoSb (formulated Ti$^{4+}$[CoSb]$^{4-}$). The basis for this is that [AlSi]$^-$ (with the same electron count as Si$_2$) and [CoSb]$^{4-}$ (the same electron count as GaSb), are both structurally and electronically, zinc-blende semiconductors. The electronic structure of half-metallic ferromagnets in this structure type can then be described as semiconductors with stuffing magnetic ions which have a local moment: For example, 22 electron MnNiSb can be written Mn$^{3+}$[NiSb]$^{3-}$. The tendency in the 18 electron compound for a semiconducting gap -- believed to arise from strong covalency -- is carried over in MnNiSb to a tendency for a gap in one spin direction. Here we similarly propose the systematic examination of 18-electron hexagonal compounds for semiconducting gaps; these would be the "stuffed wurtzite" analogues of the "stuffed zinc blende" half-Heusler compounds. These semiconductors could then serve as the basis for possibly new families of half-metallic compounds, attained through appropriate replacement of non-magnetic ions by magnetic ones. These semiconductors and semimetals with tunable charge carrier concentrations could also be interesting in the context of magnetoresistive and thermoelectric materials.

Exchange biasing of single-domain Ni nanoparticles spontaneously grown in an antiferromagnetic MnO matrix

Exchange biased composites of ferromagnetic single-domain Ni nanoparticles embedded within large grains of MnO have been prepared by reduction of Ni$_x$Mn$_{1-x}$O$_4$ phases in flowing hydrogen. The Ni precipitates are 15-30 nm in extent, and the majority are completely encased within the MnO matrix. The manner in which the Ni nanoparticles are spontaneously formed imparts a high ferromagnetic- antiferromagnetic interface/volume ratio, which results in substantial exchange bias effects. Exchange bias fields of up to 100 Oe are observed, in cases where the starting Ni content $x$ in the precursor Ni$_x$Mn$_{1-x}$O$_4$ phase is small. For particles of approximately the same size, the exchange bias leads to significant hardening of the magnetization, with the coercive field scaling nearly linearly with the exchange bias field.

Microstrain and defects in polycrystalline Zn_{1-x}Mg_{x}O (0 <= x <= 0.15) studied by X-ray diffraction, and optical and Raman spectroscopies

The properties of polycrystalline wurtzite Zn_{1-x}Mg_{x}O (0 <= x <= 0.15) have been studied, by powder X-ray diffraction, including an analysis of the X-ray line-broadening, and by luminescence, absorption, and Raman spectroscopies. We have previously established from synchrotron X-ray difffraction that with increasing Mg-concentration, the c-axis compresses, and the off-center cation displacement within each tetrahedral (Zn,Mg)O_{4} unit decreases. Here we perform a size-strain line-broadening analysis of the XRD peaks, which reveals that the Mg-substitution reduces the coherent crystallite size and also develops the lattice microstrain. The optical properties of the samples have been characterized by diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy and fluorimetry. Both the optical band gap and the band-edge emission energies gradually increase with the Mg-concentration in Zn_{1-x}Mg_{x}O. The Mg-substituted samples show broader band tails near the absorption edge, due to the increase of crystal imperfections. The peak broadening of the E_{2}{high} Raman mode, upon the Mg-substitution, is also ascribed to the phonon shortening lifetime mechanism via crystal defects.

First-principles modeling of BaCeO_{3}: structure and stabilization of O vacancies by Pd-doping

We use first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the ground state structures of both BaCeO_{3} (BC) and Pd-doped BC (BCP). The relaxed structures match closely with recent experimental scattering studies, and also provide a local picture of how the BC perovskite lattice accommodates Pd. Both stoichiometric and oxygen-deficient materials are considered, and structures with an O vacancy adjacent to each Pd are predicted to be favored. The oxidation state of Pd in each doped structure is investigated through a structural analysis, the results of which are supported by an orbital-resolved projected density of states. The vacancy stabilization by Pd in BCP is explained through redox chemistry and lattice strain relief.

Local structure evolution in polycrystalline Zn$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$O ($0\leq{x}\leq{0.15}$) studied by Raman and by synchrotron x-ray pair distribution analysis

The local structures of Zn$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$O alloys have been studied by Raman spectroscopy and by synchrotron x-ray pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. Within the solid solution range ($0\leq{x}\leq{0.15}$) of Zn$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$O, the wurtzite framework is maintained with Mg homogeneously distributed throughout the wurtzite lattice. The $E_2^\mathrm{high}$ Raman line of Zn$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$O displays systematic changes in response to the evolution of the crystal lattice upon the Mg-substitution. The red-shift and broadening of the $E_2^\mathrm{high}$ mode are explained by the expansion of hexagonal $ab$-dimensions, and compositional disorder of Zn/Mg, respectively. Synchrotron x-ray PDF analyses of Zn$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$O reveal that the Mg atoms have a slightly reduced wurtzite parameter $u$ and more regular tetrahedral bond distances than the Zn atoms. For both Zn and Mg, the internal tetrahedral geometries are independent of the alloy composition.

Crystal structure, magnetism, and bonding of the hexagonal compounds Pd$_{1.63}$Mn$_{0.37}$Si and Pd$_{1.82}$Mn$_{0.18}$Ge related to the Fe$_2$P structure

We have used single crystal X-ray diffraction methods to establish the crystal structures of a compound in the Pd-Mn-Si system and in the Pd-Mn-Ge system. The title compounds have structures related to the Fe$_2$P structure type and are ferromagnetic with Curie temperatures above the room temperature. Density functional electronic structure calculations help to understand the nature of the local moment ferromagnetism in these compounds. However neither the electronic structure calculations nor the magnetic measurements provide any evidence of half-metallic behavior.

Synchrotron X-ray study of polycrystalline wurtzite Zn1-xMgxO (0 <= x <= 0.15): Evolution of crystal structure and polarization

The effect of Mg-substitution on the crystal structure of wurtzite ZnO is presented based on synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies of polycrystalline Zn1-xMgxO (0 <= x <= 0.15). Increase in Mg concentration results in pronounced c-axis compression of the hexagonal lattice, and in diminution of the off-center cation displacement within each tetrahedral ZnO4 unit. Going from ZnO to Zn0.85Mg0.15O, significant changes in the ionic polarization are observed (-5.6 to -4.8 uC/cm2), despite only subtle increments in the cell volume (~0.03 %) and the ab-area dimension (~0.1 %). The optical properties of the samples have also been characterized and the band gap changes from 3.24 eV (ZnO) to 3.35 eV (Zn0.85Mg0.15O).

Electronic structure, magnetism, and disorder in the Heusler compound Co$_2$TiSn

Polycrystalline samples of the half-metallic ferromagnet Heusler compound Co$_2$TiSn have been prepared and studied using bulk techniques (X-ray diffraction and magnetization) as well as local probes ($^{119}$Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy and $^{59}$Co nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) in order to determine how disorder affects half-metallic behavior and also, to establish the joint use of Mössbauer and NMR spectroscopies as a quantitative probe of local ion ordering in these compounds. Additionally, density functional electronic structure calculations on ordered and partially disordered Co$_2$TiSn compounds have been carried out at a number of different levels of theory in order to simultaneously understand how the particular choice of DFT scheme as well as disorder affect the computed magnetization. Our studies suggest that a sample which seems well-ordered by X-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements can possess up to 10% of antisite (Co/Ti) disordering. Computations similarly suggest that even 12.5% antisite Co/Ti disorder does not destroy the half-metallic character of this material. However, the use of an appropriate level of non-local DFT is crucial.

Magnetic and electron transport properties of the rare-earth cobaltates, La0.7-xLnxCa0.3CoO3 (Ln = Pr, Nd, Gd and Dy) : A case of phase separation

Magnetic and electrical properties of four series of rare earth cobaltates of the formula La0.7-xLnxCa0.3CoO3 with Ln = Pr, Nd, Gd and Dy have been investigated. Compositions close to x = 0.0 contain large ferromagnetic clusters or domains, and show Brillouin-like behaviour of the field-cooled DC magnetization data with fairly high ferromagnetic Tc values, besides low electrical resistivities with near-zero temperature coefficients. The zero-field-cooled data generally show a non-monotonic behaviour with a peak at a temperatures slightly lower than Tc. The near x = 0.0 compositions show a prominent peak corresponding to the Tc in the AC-susceptibility data. The ferromagnetic Tc varies linearly with x or the average radius of the A-site cations, (rA). With increase in x or decrease in (rA), the magnetization value at any given temperature decreases markedly and the AC-susceptibility measurements show a prominent transition arising from small magnetic clusters with some characteristics of a spin-glass. Electrical resistivity increases with increase in x, showed a significant increase around a critical value of x or (rA), at which composition the small clusters also begin to dominate. These properties can be understood in terms of a phase separation scenario wherein large magnetic clusters give way to smaller ones with increase in x, with both types of clusters being present in certain compositions. The changes in magnetic and electrical properties occur parallely since the large ferromagnetic clusters are hole-rich and the small clusters are hole-poor. Variable-range hopping seems to occur at low temperatures in these cobaltates.

Covalent bonding and the nature of band gaps in some half-Heusler compounds

Half-Heusler compounds \textit{XYZ}, also called semi-Heusler compounds, crystallize in the MgAgAs structure, in the space group $F\bar43m$. We report a systematic examination of band gaps and the nature (covalent or ionic) of bonding in semiconducting 8- and 18- electron half-Heusler compounds through first-principles density functional calculations. We find the most appropriate description of these compounds from the viewpoint of electronic structures is one of a \textit{YZ} zinc blende lattice stuffed by the \textit{X} ion. Simple valence rules are obeyed for bonding in the 8-electron compound. For example, LiMgN can be written Li$^+$ + (MgN)$^-$, and (MgN)$^-$, which is isoelectronic with (SiSi), forms a zinc blende lattice. The 18-electron compounds can similarly be considered as obeying valence rules. A semiconductor such as TiCoSb can be written Ti$^{4+}$ + (CoSb)$^{4-}$; the latter unit is isoelectronic and isostructural with zinc-blende GaSb. For both the 8- and 18-electron compounds, when \textit{X} is fixed as some electropositive cation, the computed band gap varies approximately as the difference in Pauling electronegativities of \textit{Y} and \textit{Z}. What is particularly exciting is that this simple idea of a covalently bonded \textit{YZ} lattice can also be extended to the very important \textit{magnetic} half-Heusler phases; we describe these as valence compounds \textit{ie.} possessing a band gap at the Fermi energy albeit only in one spin direction. The \textit{local} moment in these magnetic compounds resides on the \textit{X} site.

Lone pairs in insulating pyrochlores: Ice rules and high-$k$ behavior

Pyrochlore dielectric materials such as (Bi$_{1.5}$Zn$_{0.5}$)(Nb$_{1.5}$Zn$_{0.5}$)O$_7$ (BZN) have generated interest because they combine high dielectric constants with small dielectric loss tangents and yet are cubic at all temperatures. The recent low-temperature preparation and structural characterization of Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, which remains cubic down to 2 K, has provided a good model system for understanding the properties of Bi-based pyrochlores. In this contribution, the electronic structure of cubic Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is visualized and compared with the electronic structure of the Aurivillius phase ferroelectric SrBi$_2$Ta$_2$O$_9$ (SBT), which displays a ferroelectric distortion below 608 K associated with the tendency of lone pair active Bi$^{3+}$ to move off-center. Such coherent off-centering distortions are frustrated on the pyrochlore lattice, and this prevents a ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition in Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. Instead, Bi$^{3+}$ ions in Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ are obliged to off-center in an \textit{incoherent} manner, that is compatible with the cubic structure being retained. Frustrated lone pair behavior in the defect pyrochlore Pb$_2$Sn$_2$O$_6$ is also described. Parallels between the well-studied frustration of certain types of \textit{magnetism} in pyrochlore compounds (spin-ice) and the striking paucity of ferroelectric pyrochlores, arising from the corner-connected tetrahedral topology of the pyrochlore lattice are pointed out.

Oxygen stoichiometry, crystal structure, and magnetism in La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_{3-δ}$

We have prepared a series of polycrystalline samples La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_{3-δ}$} with $0 < δ\le 0.21$ and characterized their oxygen content, crystal structure, and magnetic properties. While the fully oxygenated samples are good ferromagnets, samples with larger $δ$ values display increasingly broad magnetic transitions. The saturation magnetization at 5 K falls rapidly as $δ$ increases. First principles electronic structure calculations provide insights into the magnetic behavior of the fully oxygenated compound, and the manner in which ferromagnetic ordering is affected by increasing oxygen non-stoichiometry.

Absence of ferromagnetism in Co and Mn substituted polycrystalline ZnO

We discuss the properties of semiconducting bulk ZnO when substituted with the magnetic transition metal ions Mn and Co, with substituent fraction ranging from $x$ = 0.02 to $x$ = 0.15. The magnetic properties were measured as a function of magnetic field and temperature and we find no evidence for magnetic ordering in these systems down to $T$ = 2 K. The magnetization can be fit by the sum of a Curie-Weiss term with a Weiss temperature of $Θ\gg$100 K and a Curie term. We attribute this behavior to contributions from both \textit{t}M ions with \textit{t}M nearest neighbors and from isolated spins. This particular functional form for the susceptibility is used to explain why no ordering is observed in \textit{t}M substituted ZnO samples despite the large values of the Weiss temperature. We also discuss in detail the methods we used to minimize any impurity contributions to the magnetic signal.

An experimental and computational investigation of structure and magnetism in pyrite Co$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$S$_2$: Chemical bonding and half-metallicity

Bulk samples of the pyrite chalcogenide solid solutions Co$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$S$_2$ 0 <= x <= 0.5, have been prepared and their crystal structures and magnetic properties studied by X-ray diffraction and SQUID magnetization measurements. Across the solution series, the distance between sulfur atoms in the persulfide (S$_2^{2-}$) unit remains nearly constant. First principles electronic structure calculations using experimental crystal structures as inputs point to the importance of this constant S-S distance, in helping antibonding S-S levels pin the Fermi energy. In contrast hypothetical rock-salt CoS is not a good half metal, despite being nearly isostructural and isoelectronic. We use our understanding of the Co$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$S$_2$ system to make some prescriptions for new ferromagnetic half-metals.
