The possible adelic indices for elliptic curves admitting a rational cyclic isogeny

In the 1970s, Serre proved that the adelic index of a non-CM elliptic curve over a number field is finite. More recently, Zywina conjectured the complete set of adelic indices for such curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. In this article, we prove that Zywina's conjecture is true for the family of non-CM elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ that admit a nontrivial rational cyclic isogeny. This strengthens a result of Lemos that resolved Serre's uniformity question for the same family of curves. Our proof proceeds by analyzing a collection of modular curves associated with each prime isogeny degree, using recent advances on $\ell$-adic images, isogeny-torsion graphs, and computations of models and rational points.

Modular curves of prime-power level with infinitely many quadratic points

We completely determine the $1085$ open subgroups $H$ of $\operatorname{GL}_2(\widehat{\mathbb{Z}})$ of prime-power level that satisfy $-I \in H$ and $\operatorname{det}(H)=\widehat{\mathbb{Z}}^{\times}$ for which the corresponding modular curve $X_H$ has infinitely many quadratic points. When $g(X_H)\geq 2$ this is equivalent to determining all the hyperelliptic modular curves of prime-power level and all the bielliptic modular curves of prime-power level that admit a degree two map to a positive rank elliptic curve. From the moduli perspective, this means that there are exactly 1085 subgroups $H$ of $\operatorname{GL}_2(\widehat{\mathbb{Z}})$ of prime-power level for which there are infinitely many elliptic curves $E/K$ over quadratic extensions such that $\rho_E(G_k)$ is conjugate to a subgroup of $H$.

On possibilities of 3-adic Galois images associated to isogeny-torsion graphs

Let $E$ be a non CM elliptic curve defined over $\Q$. There is an isogeny-torsion graph associated to $E$ and there is also a Galois representation $\rho_{E,l^{\infty}} \colon \Gal(\Qbar/\Q) \to \GL_2(\ZZ_{\ell})$ associated to $E$ for every prime $\ell.$ In this article, we explore the relation between these two objects when $\ell=3$. More precisely, we give a classification of 3-adic Galois images associated to vertices of the isogeny-torsion graph of $E.$

On Possible Genus 0 adelic Galois Images of non CM Elliptic Curves over $\mathbb{Q}$

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$/ Associated to $E$, there is an adelic Galois representation $\rho_E \colon {\rm Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q}) \to {\rm GL}_2(\hat{\mathbb{Z}})$. In this article, we give possibilities for groups generated by $\rho_E({\rm Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q}))$ and $-I$ as $E$ varies over non CM elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ such that the group $\pm \rho_E({\rm Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q}))$ has genus 0. However, our list is not minimal.

Serre curves relative to obstructions modulo 2

We consider elliptic curves $E / \mathbb{Q}$ for which the image of the adelic Galois representation $\rho_E$ is as large as possible given a constraint on the image modulo 2. For such curves, we give a characterization in terms of their $\ell$-adic images, compute all examples of conductor at most 500,000, precisely describe the image of $\rho_E$, and offer an application to the cyclicity problem. In this way, we generalize some foundational results on Serre curves.

A Classification of Genus 0 Modular Curves with Rational Points

Let $E$ be a non-CM elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb {Q}$. Fix an algebraic closure $\overline{\mathbb {Q}}$ of $\mathbb {Q}$. We get a Galois representation \[\rho_E \colon Gal(\overline{\mathbb {Q}}/\mathbb {Q}) \to GL_2(\hat{\mathbb {Z}})\] associated to $E$ by choosing a compatible bases for the $N$-torsion subgroups of $E(\overline{\mathbb {Q}}).$ Associated to an open subgroup $G$ of $GL_2(\hat{\mathbb {Z}})$ satisfying $-I \in G$ and $det(G)=\hat{\mathbb {Z}}^{\times}$, we have the modular curve $(X_G,\pi_G)$ over $\mathbb {Q}$ which loosely parametrises elliptic curves $E$ such that the image of $\rho_E$ is conjugate to a subgroup of $G^t.$ In this article we give a complete classification of all such genus $0$ modular curves that have a rational point. This classification is given in finitely many families. Moreover, each such modular curve can be explicitly computed.
