On Instantons at Large Charge

The large R-charge limit of two-point functions of chiral primary operators in rank-one $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories exhibits a universal behavior controlled by the effective field theory on their Coulomb branch. In the case of $SU(2)$ SQCD with four flavors, this behavior is expected to be independent of the exactly-marginal gauge coupling. We provide an analytic proof of this prediction by computing the correlators directly via supersymmetric localization. Our analysis clarifies the interplay between the weak-coupling expansion and the large-charge expansion, with special emphasis on the precise role played by gauge-theory instantons in the latter regime. We conclude with remarks on the implications of our results for analogous observables in Argyres-Douglas theories.

Type IIB at eight derivatives: Five-Point Axio-Dilaton Couplings

We study the Type IIB eight-derivative effective Lagrangian beyond the quartic level, focusing on interactions involving gravitons and axio-dilatons. We show how to translate five-point scattering amplitudes into genuine five-point contact terms and extract all perturbative contributions to the effective action. Our result is consistent with T-duality predictions at tree level in the NSNS sector. We find that couplings with an even/odd number of scalars are neutral/charged under $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$, and use this feature to deduce their non-perturbative completion. The mixed NSNS/RR structures that cannot be deduced from the pure NSNS sector allow us to unambiguously fix the kinematics, which turns out to be the same for tree level and one loop. In Type IIA, these structures are essential for establishing agreement of string-theoretic corrections with the circle reduction of M-theory higher-derivative couplings.

Duality-Symmetry Enhancement in Maxwell Theory

Free Maxwell theory on general four-manifolds may, under certain conditions on the background geometry, exhibit holomorphic factorization in its partition function. We show that when this occurs, new discrete symmetries emerge at orbifold points of the conformal manifold. These symmetries, which act only on a sublattice of flux configurations, are not associated with standard dualities, yet they may carry 't Hooft anomalies, potentially causing the partition function to vanish even in the absence of apparent pathologies. We further explore their non-invertible extensions and argue that their anomalies can account for zeros of the partition function at smooth points in the moduli space.

$\mathcal{N} = 2$ Orbi-S-Folds

We introduce a new class of non-compact backgrounds of Type IIB string theory preserving eight supercharges by combining S-folds and non-perturbative 7-branes wrapping orbifolds, and study the four-dimensional superconformal field theories arising at low energy on $D3$-branes probing them. We draw a precise correspondence between this setup and the torus compactification of six-dimensional orbi-instanton theories with a Stiefel-Whitney twist, and use it to determine the main features of such strongly-coupled systems, like central charges, spectra of Coulomb-branch operators, networks of Higgs-branch flows. Finally, with the aim to improve our understanding of the landscape of $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories, and possibly to extend their classification beyond rank two, we provide a detailed catalogue of all the rank-three theories that our framework gives access to.

Partition functions of non-Lagrangian theories from the holomorphic anomaly

The computation of the partition function in certain quantum field theories, such as those of the Argyres-Douglas or Minahan-Nemeschansky type, is problematic due to the lack of a Lagrangian description. In this paper, we use the holomorphic anomaly equation to derive the gravitational corrections to the prepotential of such theories at rank one by deforming them from the conformal point. In the conformal limit, we find a general formula for the partition function as a sum of hypergeometric functions. We show explicit results for the round sphere and the Nekrasov-Shatashvili phases of the $\Omega$ background. The first case is relevant for the derivation of extremal correlators in flat space, whereas the second one has interesting applications for the study of anharmonic oscillators.

N=1 SCFTs from F-theory on Orbifolds

We study four-dimensional superconformal field theories living on the worldvolume of $D3$ branes probing minimally-supersymmetric F-theory backgrounds, focusing on the case of orbi-orientifold setups with and without 7-branes. We observe that these theories are closely related to compactifications of six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ theories on a torus with flux, where the flux quanta is mapped in Type IIB to the defining data of the orbifold group. We analyze the cases of class $\mathcal{S}_k$ theories as well as of compactifications of the E-string and of orbi-instanton theories. We also classify $\mathcal{S}$-fold configurations in F-theory preserving minimal supersymmetry in four dimensions and their mass deformations.

Type IIB at eight derivatives: insights from Superstrings, Superfields and Superparticles

We study the non-linear structure of Type IIB eight-derivative couplings involving the metric and the complexified three-form $G_3$. We show that, at the level of five-point string amplitudes, the kinematics in the maximally R-symmetry-violating sector is fully matched by standard superspace integrals and by superparticle amplitudes in M-theory on a two-torus. The latter approach is used to determine the complete effective action in this sector and to verify its invariance under SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality. We further comment on the general structure of the higher-point kinematics. Compactifications to lower dimensions provide both tests for our results and the arena for their applications. We verify that K3 reductions are fully consistent with the constraints of six-dimensional supersymmetry, and derive the four-dimensional flux scalar potential and axion kinetic terms at order $(\alpha^{\prime})^{3}$ in Calabi-Yau threefold reductions.

Probing 7-branes on Orbifolds

D3 branes in the vicinity of an E6, E7, or E8 stack of 7-branes in flat space are known to host at low energy a famous class of strongly-coupled N = 2 superconformal field theories featuring exceptional global symmetry. What if, instead, the 7-branes wrap an orbifold? We give a systematic characterization of such theories in the case of C2/Zn, and determine their main properties, like global symmetries, spectra of Coulomb-branch operators, and patterns of Higgs-branch flows. We put forward a set of rules to construct their magnetic quivers, which directly generalize what happens in the perturbative case, and later derive them using the duality with M5 branes probing M9 walls.

OPE coefficients in Argyres-Douglas theories

The calculation of physical quantities in certain quantum field theories such as those of the Argyres-Douglas type is notoriously hard, due to the lack of a Lagrangian description. Here we tackle this problem following two alternative approaches. On the one hand, we use localization on the four-sphere to compute two-correlators and OPE coefficients in Argyres-Douglas superconformal theories. On the other hand, we use the conformal bootstrap machinery to put stringent bounds on such coefficients, only relying on the knowledge of central charge and conformal dimension of the operators. We compare the results obtained with these two methods and find good agreement for all rank-one cases and for the rank-two Argyres-Douglas theories (A_1,A_4) and (A_1,A_5), in the moduli space of pure SU(5) and SU(6) super Yang-Mills. We also apply our results from localization to obtain bounds on the dimensions of the lightest neutral unprotected operators of the CFTs.

Systematics of the $\alpha'$ Expansion in F-Theory

Extracting reliable low-energy information from string compactifications notoriously requires a detailed understanding of the UV sensitivity of the corresponding effective field theories. Despite past efforts in computing perturbative string corrections to the tree-level action, neither a systematic approach nor a unified framework has emerged yet. We make progress in this direction, focusing on the moduli dependence of perturbative corrections to the 4D scalar potential of type IIB Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications. We proceed by employing two strategies. First, we use two rescaling symmetries of type IIB string theory to infer the dependence of any perturbative correction on both the dilaton and the Calabi-Yau volume. Second, we use F/M-theory duality to conclude that KK reductions on elliptically-fibred Calabi-Yau fourfolds of the M-theory action at any order in the derivative expansion can only generate $(\alpha')^{\rm even}$ corrections to the 4D scalar potential, which, moreover, all vanish for trivial fibrations. We finally give evidence that $(\alpha')^{\rm odd}$ effects arise from integrating out KK and winding modes on the elliptic fibration and argue that the leading no-scale breaking effects at string tree-level arise from $(\alpha')^3$ effects, modulo potential logarithmic corrections.

A vanishing theorem for T-branes

We consider regular polystable Higgs pairs $(E, \phi)$ on compact complex manifolds. We show that a non-trivial Higgs field $\phi \in H^0 ({\rm End} (E) \otimes K_S)$ restricts the Ricci curvature of the manifold, generalising previous results in the literature. In particular $\phi$ must vanish for positive Ricci curvature, while for trivial canonical bundle it must be proportional to the identity. For K\"ahler surfaces, our results provide a new vanishing theorem for solutions to the Vafa--Witten equations. Moreover they constrain supersymmetric 7-brane configurations in F-theory, giving obstructions to the existence of T-branes, i.e. solutions with $[\phi, \phi^\dagger] \neq 0$. When non-trivial Higgs fields are allowed, we give a general characterisation of their structure in terms of vector bundle data, which we then illustrate in explicit examples.

The Geometry of SUSY Enhancement

We provide a precise geometric picture that demystifies the phenomenon of supersymmetry enhancement along certain RG flows of four-dimensional field theories, recently discovered by Maruyoshi and Song. It applies to theories of arbitrary rank and it is based on a hyperk\"ahler-structure restoration on the moduli space of solutions of (twisted) Hitchin systems, which underly the class-S construction we use as an engineering tool. Along the way, we formulate a necessary algebraic condition for supersymmetry enhancement, and, when enhancement occurs, we are able to derive the Seiberg-Witten geometry and all conformal dimensions of Coulomb-branch operators for the infrared theory, without using a-maximization.

The two faces of T-branes

We establish a brane-brane duality connecting T-branes to collections of ordinary D-branes. T-branes are intrinsically non-Abelian brane configurations with worldvolume flux, whereas their duals consist of Abelian brane systems that encode the T-brane data in their curvature. We argue that the new Abelian picture provides a reliable description of T-branes when their non-Abelian fields have large expectation values in string units. To confirm this duality, we match the energy density and all the electromagnetic couplings on both sides. A key step in this derivation is a non-trivial factorization of the symmetrized-trace non-Abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld action when evaluated on solutions of the $\alpha'$-corrected Hitchin system.

T-branes and defects

We study T-branes on compact Kaehler surfaces, in the presence of fields localised at curves. If such fields are treated as defects, their vevs induce delta-function sources for the 7-brane background, possibly leading to profiles with poles. We find that the presence of defect sources relaxes the constraints on globally well-defined T-brane configurations, avoiding the obstruction to building them on surfaces of positive curvature. Profiles with poles can be understood, from a 4d viewpoint, as non-trivial vevs for massive modes induced by the defects, and come with their own set of constraints. In the special case of fields localised on a self-intersection curve, we show how to retrieve the Hitchin system with defects from an ordinary global one with enhanced symmetry.

SUSY enhancement from T-branes

We use the F-theoretic engineering of four-dimensional rank-one superconformal field theories to provide a geometric understanding of the phenomenon of supersymmetry enhancement along the RG flow, recently observed by Maruyoshi and Song. In this context, the superpotential deformations responsible for such flows are interpreted as T-brane backgrounds and encoded in the geometry of elliptically-fibered fourfolds. We formulate a simple algebraic criterion to select all supersymmetry-enhancing flows and, without any maximization process, derive the main features of the corresponding N=2 theories in the infrared.

Compact T-branes

We analyse global aspects of 7-brane backgrounds with a non-commuting profile for their worldvolume scalars, also known as T-branes. In particular, we consider configurations with no poles and globally well-defined over a compact K\"ahler surface. We find that such T-branes cannot be constructed on surfaces of positive or vanishing Ricci curvature. For the existing T-branes, we discuss their stability as we move in K\"ahler moduli space at large volume and provide examples of T-branes splitting into non-mutually-supersymmetric constituents as they cross a stability wall.

T-branes and Matrix Models

We find that the equations describing T-branes with constant worldvolume fields are identical to the equations found by Banks, Seiberg and Shenker twenty years ago to describe longitudinal five-branes in the BFSS matrix model. Besides giving new ways to construct T-brane solutions, this connection also helps elucidate the physics of T-branes in the regime of parameters where their worldvolume fields are larger than the string scale. We construct explicit solutions to the Banks-Seiberg-Shenker equations and show that the corresponding T-branes admit an alternative description as Abelian branes at angles.

Discrete anomalies in supergravity and consistency of string backgrounds

We examine SL(2, Z) anomalies in ten and eight-dimensional supergravities, the induced local counterterms and their realization in string theory. Composite connections play an important role in the cancellation mechanism. At the same time their global properties lead to novel non-trivial consistency constraints on compactifications.
