On $2$-blocks with quaternion defect groups

We determine the Morita equivalence classes of $2$-blocks with quaternion defect groups of arbitrary $2$-power order, thereby completing the proof of Donovan's conjecture for blocks of tame representation type.

The source permutation module of a block of a finite group algebra

For $G$ a finite group, $k$ a field of prime characteristic $p$, and $S$ a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$, the Sylow permutation module $\mathrm{Ind}^G_S(k)$ plays a role in diverse facets of representation theory and group theory, ranging from Alperin's weight conjecture to statistical considerations of $S$-$S$-double cosets in $G$. The Sylow permutation module breaks up along the block decomposition of the group algebra $kG$, but the resulting block components are not invariant under splendid Morita equivalences. We introduce a summand of the block component, which we call source permutation module, which is shown to be invariant under such equivalences. We investigate general structural properties of the source permutation module and we show that well-known results relating the self-injectivity of the endomorphism algebra of the Sylow permutation to Alperin's weight conjecture carry over to the source permutation module. We calculate this module in various cases, such as certain blocks with cyclic defect group and blocks with a Klein four defect group, and for some blocks of symmetric groups, prompted by a question in a recent paper by Diaconis-Giannelli-Guralnick-Law-Navarro-Sambale-Spink on the self-injectivity of the endomorphism algebra of the Sylow permutation module for symmetric groups.

Partial character tables for $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-spetses

Let ${\mathbb{G}}$ be a simply connected ${\mathbb{Z}}_\ell$-spets, let $q$ be a prime power, prime to $\ell$ and let $S$ be the underlying Sylow $\ell$-subgroup. Firstly, motivated by known formulae for values of Deligne-Lusztig characters of finite reductive groups, we propose a formula for the values of the unipotent characters of ${\mathbb{G}}(q)$ on the elements of $S$. Using this, we explicitly list the unipotent character values of the ${\mathbb{Z}}_2$-spets $G_{24}(q)$ related to the Benson-Solomon fusion system Sol$(q)$. Secondly, when $\ell > 2$ is a very good prime for ${\mathbb{G}}$, the Weyl group $W$ of ${\mathbb{G}}$ has order coprime with $\ell$, and $q\equiv1\pmod\ell$ we introduce a formula for the values of characters in the principal block of ${\mathbb{G}}(q)$ which extends the Curtis-Schewe type formulae for groups of Lie type, and which we show to satisfy a version of block orthogonality. In both cases we formulate and provide evidence for several conjectures concerning the proposed values.

Weight conjectures for fusion systems on an extraspecial group

In a previous paper, we stated and motivated counting conjectures for fusion systems that are purely local analogues of several local-to-global conjectures in the modular representation theory of finite groups. Here we verify some of these conjectures for fusion systems on an extraspecial group of order $p^3$, which contain among them the Ruiz-Viruel exotic fusion systems at the prime $7$. As a byproduct we verify Robinson's ordinary weight conjecture for principal $p$-blocks of almost simple groups $G$ realizing such (nonconstrained) fusion systems.

Jordan correspondence and block distribution of characters

We complete the determination of the $\ell$-block distribution of characters for quasi-simple exceptional groups of Lie type up to some minor ambiguities relating to non-uniqueness of Jordan decomposition. For this, we first determine the $\ell$-block distribution for finite reductive groups whose ambient algebraic group defined in characteristic different from $\ell$ has connected centre. As a consequence we derive a compatibility between $\ell$-blocks, $e$-Harish-Chandra series and Jordan decomposition. Further we apply our results to complete the proof of Robinson's conjecture on defects of characters.

Weight conjectures for Parker--Semeraro fusion systems

We prove that the Parker--Semeraro systems satisfy six of the nine Kessar--Linckelmann--Lynd--Semeraro weight conjectures for saturated fusion systems. As a by-product we obtain that Robinson's ordinary weight conjecture holds for the principal $3$-block of Aut$(G_2(3))$, the principal $5$-blocks of $HN$, $BM$, Aut$(HN)$, $Ly$, the principal $7$-block of $M$, and the principal $p$-blocks of $G_2(p)$ for $p\geq 3 $.

Weight conjectures for $\ell$-compact groups and spetses

Fundamental conjectures in modular representation theory of finite groups, more precisely, Alperin's Weight Conjecture and Robinson's Ordinary Weight Conjecture, can be expressed in terms of fusion systems. We use fusion systems to connect the modular representation theory of finite groups of Lie type to the theory of $\ell$-compact groups. Under some mild conditions we prove that the fusion systems associated to homotopy fixed points of $\ell$-compact groups satisfy an equation which for finite groups of Lie type is equivalent to Alperin's Weight Conjecture. For finite reductive groups, Robinson's Ordinary Weight Conjecture is closely related to Lusztig's Jordan decomposition of characters and the corresponding results for Brauer $\ell$-blocks. Motivated by this, we define the principal block of a spets attached to a spetsial ${\mathbb Z}_\ell$-reflection group, using the fusion system related to it via $\ell$-compact groups, and formulate an analogue of Robinson's conjecture for this block. We prove this formulation for an infinite family of cases as well as for some groups of exceptional type. Our results not only provide further strong evidence for the validity of the weight conjectures, but also point toward some yet unknown structural explanation for them purely in the framework of fusion systems.

Weights for compact connected Lie groups

Let $\ell$ be a prime. If ${\mathbf G} $ is a compact connected Lie group, or a connected reductive algebraic group in characteristic different from $\ell$, and $\ell$ is a good prime for ${\mathbf G}$, we show that the number of weights of the $\ell$-fusion system of ${\mathbf G}$ is equal to the number of irreducible characters of its Weyl group. The proof relies on the classification of $\ell$-stubborn subgroups in compact Lie groups.

Hochschild cohomology of symmetric groups and generating functions,II

We relate the generating functions of the dimensions of the Hochschild cohomology in any fixed degree of the symmetric groups with those of blocks of the symmetric groups. We show that the first Hochschild cohomology of a positive defect block of a symmetric group is non-zero, answering in the affirmative a question of the third author. To do this, we prove a formula expressing the dimension of degree one Hochschild cohomology as a sum of dimensions of centres of blocks of smaller symmetric groups. This in turn is a consequence of a general formula that makes more precise a theorem of our previous paper describing the generating functions for the dimensions of Hochschild cohomology of symmetric groups.

Hochschild cohomology of symmetric groups in low degrees

We compute the dimensions of the Hochschild cohomology of symmetric groups over prime fields in low degrees. This involves us in studying some partition identities and generating functions of the dimensions in any fixed degree of the Hochschild cohomology of symmetric groups.

Quasi-isolated blocks and Brauer's height zero conjecture

This paper has two main results. Firstly, we complete the parametrisation of all p-blocks of finite quasi-simple groups by finding the so-called quasi-isolated blocks of exceptional groups of Lie type for bad primes. This relies on the explicit decomposition of Lusztig induction from suitable Levi subgroups. Our second major result is the proof of one direction of Brauer's long-standing height zero conjecture on blocks of finite groups, using the reduction by Berger and Knörr to the quasi-simple situation. We also use our result on blocks to verify a conjecture of Malle and Navarro on nilpotent blocks for all quasi-simple groups. In the supplement we treat a configuration for the $5$-blocks of the finite simple groups $E_8(q)$ that was inadvertently omitted in the first version and clarify and correct the meaning of some entries in Tables 3 and 4. The main theorems of the original version are not affected.

Structure of blocks with normal defect and abelian $p'$ inertial quotient

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic $p$. Let $kGe$ be a block of a group algebra of a finite group $G$, with normal defect group $P$ and abelian $p'$ inertial quotient $L$. Then we show that $kGe$ is a matrix algebra over a quantised version of the group algebra of a semidirect product of $P$ with a certain subgroup of $L$. To do this, we first examine the associated graded algebra, using a Jennings--Quillen style theorem. As an example, we calculate the associated graded of the basic algebra of the non-principal block in the case of a semidirect product of an extraspecial $p$-group $P$ of exponent $p$ and order $p^3$ with a quaternion group of order eight with the centre acting trivially. In the case $p=3$ we give explicit generators and relations for the basic algebra as a quantised version of $kP$. As a second example, we give explicit generators and relations in the case of a group of shape $2^{1+4}:3^{1+2}$ in characteristic two.

The principal block of a $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-spets and Yokonuma type algebras

We formulate conjectures concerning the dimension of the principal block of a ${\mathbb Z}_\ell$-spets (as defined in our earlier paper), motivated by analogous statements for finite groups. We show that these conjectures hold in certain situations. For this we introduce and study a Yokonuma type algebra for torus normalisers in $\ell$-compact groups which may be of independent interest.

On the BV structure of the Hochschild cohomology of finite group algebras

We give a simple algebraic recipe for calculating the components of the BV operator $Δ$ on the Hochschild cohomology of a finite group algebra with respect to the centraliser decomposition. We use this to investigate the properties of $Δ$ and to make some computations for some particular finite groups.

Rationality of blocks of quasi-simple finite groups

Let $\ell$ be a prime number. We show that the Morita Frobenius number of an $\ell$-block of a quasi-simple finite group is at most 4 and that the strong Frobenius number is at most $4|D|^2!$, where D denotes a defect group of the block. We deduce that a basic algebra of any block of the group algebra of a quasi-simple finite group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $\ell$ is defined over a field with $\ell^a$ elements for some $a \leq 4$. We derive consequences for Donovan's conjecture. In particular, we show that Donovan's conjecture holds for $\ell$-blocks of special linear groups.

On Perverse Equivalences and Rationality

We show that perverse equivalences between module categories of finite-dimensional algebras preserve rationality. As an application, we give a connection between some famous conjectures from the modular representation theory of finite groups, namely Broué's Abelian Defect Group conjecture and Donovan's Finiteness conjectures.

Weight conjectures for fusion systems

Many of the conjectures of current interest in the representation theory of finite groups in characteristic $p$ are local-to-global statements, in that they predict consequences for the representations of a finite group $G$ given data about the representations of the $p$-local subgroups of $G$. The local structure of a block of a group algebra is encoded in the fusion system of the block together with a compatible family of Külshammer-Puig cohomology classes. Motivated by conjectures in block theory, we state and initiate investigation of a number of seemingly local conjectures for arbitrary triples $(S,\mathcal{F},α)$ consisting of a saturated fusion system $\mathcal{F} $ on a finite $p$-group $S$ and a compatible family $α$.
