Tripartite quantum correlations obtained by post-selection from twin beams

Spatially-resolved photon counting of a twin beam performed by an iCCD camera allows for versatile tailoring the properties of the beams formed by parts of the original twin beam. Dividing the idler beam of the twin beam into three equally-intense parts and post-selecting by detecting a given number of photocounts in the whole signal beam we arrive at the idler fields exhibiting high degrees of nonclassicality and being endowed with tripartite quantum correlations. Nonclassicality is analyzed with the help of suitable nonclassicality witnesses and their corresponding nonclassicality depths. Suitable parameters are introduced to quantify quantum correlations. These parameters are analyzed as they depend on the field intensity. The experimental photocount histograms are reconstructed by the maximum-likelihood approach and the obtained photon-number distributions are compared with a suitable model in which the original twin beam is approximated by an appropriate multi-mode Gaussian field and undergoes the corresponding beams' transformations.

Calibration of single-photon cameras using radioluminescent light sources

In this paper, we address the calibration of the quantum efficiency of single-photon cameras using radioluminescent light sources. The proposed methods are subsequently compared with absolute calibration techniques based on the detection of correlated photon pairs. Furthermore, we propose a method for transferring absolute calibration using the aforementioned radioluminescent emitters.

Experimental photon addition and subtraction in multi-mode and entangled optical fields

Multiple photon addition and subtraction applied to multi-mode thermal and sub-Poissonian fields as well as twin beams is mutually compared using one experimental setup. Twin beams with tight spatial correlations detected by an intensified CCD camera with high spatial resolution are used to prepare the initial fields. Up to three photons are added or subtracted to arrive at the nonclassical and non-Gaussian states. Only the photon-subtracted thermal states remain classical. In general, the experimental photon-added states exhibit greater nonclassicality and non-Gaussianity than the comparable photon-subtracted states. Once photons are added or subtracted in twin beams, both processes result in comparable properties of the obtained states owing to twin-beam photon pairing.

Revealing Nonclassicality of Multiphoton Optical Beams via Artificial Neural Networks

The identification of nonclassical features of multiphoton quantum states represents a task of the utmost importance in the development of many quantum photonic technologies. Under realistic experimental conditions, a photonic quantum state gets affected by its interaction with several nonideal opto-electronic devices, including those used to guide, detect or characterize it. The result of such noisy interaction is that the nonclassical features of the original quantum state get considerably reduced or are completely absent in the detected, final state. In this work, the self-learning features of artificial neural networks are exploited to experimentally show that the nonclassicality of multiphoton quantum states can be assessed and fully characterized, even in the cases in which the nonclassical features are concealed by the measuring devices. Our work paves the way toward artificial-intelligence-assisted experimental-setup characterization, as well as smart quantum-state nonclassicality identification.

Non-classicality criteria for N-dimensional optical fields detected by quadratic detectors

Non-classicality criteria for general N-dimensional optical fields are derived. They involve intensity moments, the probabilities of photon-number distributions or combinations of both. The Hillery criteria for the sums of the probabilities of even or odd photon numbers are generalized to N-dimensional fields. As an example, the derived non-classicality criteria are applied to an experimental 3-mode optical field containing two types of photon-pair contributions. The accompanying non-classicality depths are used to mutually compare their performance.

Two-beam light with simultaneous anticorrelations in photon-number fluctuations and sub-Poissonian statistics

Two twin beams with a shared signal beam and separated idler beams are used together with the photon-number-resolving postselection in the signal beam to arrive at two coupled beams with anticorrelations in photon-number fluctuations. Moreover, the beams exhibit the sub-Poissonian photon-number statistics in their marginal distributions under suitable conditions. The postselected fields with the increasing mean photon numbers are reconstructed from the experimental photocount histograms by the maximum likelihood approach. Also a suitable Gaussian fit of both original twin beams and simulation of the postselection process are applied to arrive at the corresponding photon-number distributions. Their nonclassical properties are analyzed by suitable nonclassicality criteria and quantified by the corresponding nonclassicality depths. Determining the appropriate quasi-distributions of integrated intensities with negative values, the performance of different nonclassicality criteria is judged. Properties of the postselected fields reached both by the used and ideal photon-number-resolved detectors are mutually compared.

Waves in intensity coherence of evolving intense twin beams

Strong correlations between the signal and idler beams imprinted during their generation dominantly determine the properties of twin beams. They are also responsible for the waves in intensity coherence observed in the wave-vector space of a twin beam propagating in a nonlinear crystal in the regime with pump depletion. These waves start to develop at certain twin-beam intensity and move from the signal and idler beam centers towards their tails. They manifest themselves via the change of coherence volume monitored in the far field by the measurement of local modified $ \bar{g}^{(2)} $ function, which acts as a sensitive and stable tool for investigating field intensity coherence.

Luminescence-induced noise in single photon sources based on BBO crystals

Single-photon sources based on the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion play a key role in various applied disciplines of quantum optics. We characterize intrinsic luminescence of BBO crystals as a source of non-removable noise in quantum-optics experiments. By analysing its spectral and temporal properties together with its intensity, we evaluate the impact of luminescence on single-photon state preparation using spontaneous parametric down-conversion.

Spatial properties of twin-beam correlations at low- to high-intensity transition

It is shown that spatial correlation functions measured for correlated photon pairs at the single-photon level correspond to speckle patterns visible at high intensities. This correspondence is observed for the first time in one experimental setup by using different acquisition modes of an intensified CCD camera in low and high intensity regimes. The behavior of intensity auto- and cross-correlation functions in dependence on pump-beam parameters including power and transverse profile is investigated.

Characterizing the non-classicality of mesoscopic optical twin-beam states

We present a robust tool to analyze nonclassical properties of multimode twin-beam states in the mesoscopic photon-number domain. The measurements are performed by direct detection. The analysis exploits three different non-classicality criteria for detected photons exhibiting complementary behavior in the explored intensity regime. Joint signal-idler photon-number distributions and quasi-distributions of integrated intensities are determined and compared with the corresponding distributions of detected photons. Experimental conditions optimal for nonclassical properties of twin-beam states are identified.

Optimal sub-Poissonian light generation from twin beams by photon-number resolving detectors

We generate nonclassical conditional states by exploiting the quantum correlations of multi-mode twin-beam states endowed with a sizeable number of photons. A strong relation between the sub-shot-noise correlations exhibited by twin beams and the sub-Poissonian character of the conditional states is experimentally revealed. It determines optimal conditions for sub-Poissonian light generation.

Spatial and spectral properties of the pulsed second-harmonic generation in a PP-KTP waveguide

Spatial and spectral properties of the pulsed second harmonic generation in a periodically-poled KTP waveguide exploiting simultaneously the first, second, and third harmonics of periodic nonlinear modulation are analyzed. Experimental results are interpreted using a model based on finite elements method. Correlations between spatial and spectral properties of the fundamental and second-harmonic fields are revealed. Individual nonlinear processes can be exploited combining spatial and spectral filtering. Also the influence of waveguide parameters to the second-harmonic spectra is addressed.
