Precision timing for collider-experiment-based calorimetry

In this White Paper for the 2021 Snowmass process, we discuss aspects of precision timing within electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeter systems for high-energy physics collider experiments. Areas of applications include particle identification, event and object reconstruction, and pileup mitigation. Two different system options are considered, namely cell-level timing capabilities covering the full detector volume, and dedicated timing layers integrated in calorimeter systems. A selection of technologies for the different approaches is also discussed.

Wave propagation in tunable lightweight tensegrity metastructure

In this paper, lightweight metastructures are designed consisting of prismatic tensegrity building blocks which have excellent strength-to-weight ratio and also enable unique compression-torsion coupling. A theoretical model with coupled axial-torsional stiffness matrix is first developed to study the band structures of the proposed lightweight metastructures. Unit cell designs based on both Bragg scattering and local resonance mechanism are investigated to generate bandgaps at desired frequency ranges. Broadband full-wave attenuation is found in the tensegrity metastructure with special opposite-chirality unit cells. Furthermore, tunable stiffness in the prismatic tensegrity structure is investigated and 'small-on-large' tunability in the tensegrity metastructure is achieved by harnessing the geometrically nonlinear deformation through an external control torque. Prestress adjustment for fine tuning of the band structure is also investigated. Finally, frequency response tests on finite metastructures are preformed to validate their wave attenuation ability as well as their wave propagation tunability. The proposed tensegrity metastructures could be very useful in various engineering applications where lightweight and tunable structures with broadband vibration suspension and wave attenuation ability are in high demand.

Kirigami-based Elastic Metamaterials with Anisotropic Mass Density for Subwavelength Flexural Wave Control

A novel design of an elastic metamaterial with anisotropic mass density is proposed to manipulate flexural waves at a subwavelength scale. The three-dimensional metamaterial is inspired by kirigami, which can be easily manufactured by cutting and folding a thin metallic plate. By attaching the resonant kirigami structures periodically on the top of a host plate, a metamaterial plate can be constructed without any perforation that degrades the strength of the pristine plate. An analytical model is developed to understand the working mechanism of the proposed elastic metamaterial and the dispersion curves are calculated by using an extended plane wave expansion method. As a result, we verify an anisotropic effective mass density stemming from the coupling between the local resonance of the kirigami cells and the global flexural wave propagations in the host plate. Finally, numerical simulations on the directional flexural wave propagation in a two-dimensional array of kirigami metamaterial as well as super-resolution imaging through an elastic hyperlens are conducted to demonstrate the subwavelength-scale flexural wave control abilities. The proposed kirigami-based metamaterial has the advantages of no-perforation design and subwavelength flexural wave manipulation capability, which can be highly useful for engineering applications including non-destructive evaluations and structural health monitoring.

Enhanced flexural wave sensing by adaptive gradient-index metamaterials

Increasing sensitivity and signal to noise ratios of conventional wave sensors is an interesting topic in structural health monitoring, medical imaging, aerospace and nuclear instrumentation. Here, we report the concept of a gradient piezoelectric self-sensing system by integrating shunting circuitry into conventional sensors. By tuning circuit elements properly, both the quality and quantity of the flexural wave measurement data can be significantly increased for new adaptive sensing applications. Through analytical, numerical and experimental studies, we demonstrate that the metamaterial-based sensing system (MBSS) with gradient bending stiffness can be designed by connecting gradient negative capacitance circuits to an array of piezoelectric patches (sensors). We further demonstrate that the proposed system can achieve more than two orders of magnitude amplification of flexural wave signals to overcome the detection limit. This research encompasses fundamental advancements in the MBSS with improved performance and functionalities, and will yield significant advances for a range of applications.

DFT-based Conformational Analysis of a Phospholipid Molecule (DMPC)

The conformational space of the dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) molecule has been studied using Density Functional Theory (DFT), augmented with a damped empirical dispersion energy term (DFT-D). Fourteen ground-state isomers have been found with total energies within less than 1 kcal/mol. Despite differences in combinations of their torsion angles, all these conformers share a common geometric profile, which includes a balance of attractive, repulsive and constraint forces between and within specific groups of atoms. The definition of this profile fits with most of the structural characteristics deduced from measured NMR properties of DMPC solutions. The calculated vibrational spectrum of the molecule is in good agreement with experimental data obtained for DMPC bilayers. These results support the idea that DMPC molecules preserve their individual molecular structures in the various assemblies.
