Stability of Schur's iterates and fast solution of the discrete integrable NLS

We prove a sharp stability estimate for Schur iterates of contractive analytic functions in the open unit disk. We then apply this result in the setting of the inverse scattering approach and obtain a fast algorithm for solving the discrete integrable nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (Ablowitz-Ladik equation) on the integer lattice, $\mathbb{Z}$. We also give a self-contained introduction to the theory of the nonlinear Fourier transform from the perspective of Schur functions and orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle.

Entropy function and orthogonal polynomials

We give a simple proof of a classical theorem by A.M\'at\'e, P.Nevai, and V.Totik on asymptotic behavior of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. It is based on a new real-variable approach involving an entropy estimate for the orthogonality measure. Our second result is an extension of a theorem by G.Freud on averaged convergence of Fourier series. We also discuss some related open problems in the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle.

A spectral Szego theorem on the real line

We characterize even measures $\mu=wdx+\mu_s$ on the real line with finite entropy integral $\int_{R} \frac{\log w(t)}{1+t^2}dt>-\infty$ in terms of $2\times 2$ Hamiltonian generated by $\mu$ in the sense of inverse spectral theory. As a corollary, we obtain criterion for spectral measure of Krein string to have converging logarithmic integral.

On recurrence coefficients of Steklov measures

A measure $\mu$ on the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$ belongs to Steklov class $\mathcal{S}$ if its density $w$ with respect to the Lebesgue measure on $\mathbb{T}$ is strictly positive: $\inf_{\mathbb{T}} w > 0$. Let $\mu$, $\mu_{-1}$ be measures on the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$ with real recurrence coefficients $\{\alpha_k\}$, $\{-\alpha_k\}$, correspondingly. If $\mu \in \mathcal{S}$ and $\mu_{-1} \in \mathcal{S}$, then partial sums $s_k=\alpha_0+ \ldots + \alpha_k$ satisfy the discrete Muckenhoupt condition $\sup_{n > \ell\ge 0} \bigl(\frac{1}{n - \ell}\sum_{k=\ell}^{n-1} e^{2s_k}\bigr)\bigl(\frac{1}{n - \ell}\sum_{k=\ell}^{n-1} e^{-2s_k}\bigr) < \infty$.

Sampling measures, Muckenhoupt Hamiltonians, and triangular factorization

Let $\mu$ be an even measure on the real line $\mathbb{R}$ such that $$c_1 \int_{\mathbb{R}}|f|^2\,dx \le \int_{\mathbb{R}}|f|^2\,d\mu \le c_2\int_{\mathbb{R}}|f|^2\,dx$$ for all functions $f$ in the Paley-Wiener space $\mathrm{PW}_{a}$. We prove that $\mu$ is the spectral measure for the unique Hamiltonian $\mathcal{H}=\left(w&00&\frac{1}{w}\right)$ on $[0,a]$ generated by a weight $w$ from the Muckenhoupt class $A_2[0,a]$. As a consequence of this result, we construct Krein's orthogonal entire functions with respect to $\mu$ and prove that every positive, bounded, invertible Wiener-Hopf operator on $[0,a]$ with real symbol admits triangular factorization.

An inverse problem for weighted Paley-Wiener spaces

Let $\mu$ be a measure on the real line $\mathbb{R}$ such that $\int_{\mathbb{R}}\frac{d\mu(t)}{1+t^2} < \infty$ and let $a>0$. Assume that the norms $\|f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{R})}$ and $\|f\|_{L^2(\mu)}$ are comparable for functions $f$ in the Paley-Wiener space $PW_{a}$ and that $PW_a$ is dense in $L^2(\mu)$. We reconstruct the canonical Hamiltonian system $JX' = zHX$ such that $\mu$ is the spectral measure for this system.

Fredholmness and compactness of truncated Toeplitz and Hankel operators

We prove the spectral mapping theorem $\sigma_e(A_\phi) = \phi(\sigma_e(A_z))$ for the Fredholm spectrum of a truncated Toeplitz operator $A_\phi$ with symbol $\phi$ in the Sarason algebra $C+H^\infty$ acting on a coinvariant subspace $K_\theta$ of the Hardy space $H^2$. Our second result says that a truncated Hankel operator on the subspace $K_\theta$ generated by a one-component inner function $\theta$ is compact if and only if it has a continuous symbol. We also suppose a description of truncated Toeplitz and Hankel operators in Schatten classes $S^p$.

Duality theorems for coinvariant subspaces of $H^1$

Let $\theta$ be an inner function satisfying the connected level set condition of B. Cohn, and let $K^{1}_{\theta}$ be the shift-coinvariant subspace of the Hardy space $H^1$ generated by $\theta$. We describe the dual space to $K^{1}_{\theta}$ in terms of a bounded mean oscillation with respect to the Clark measure $\sigma_\alpha$ of $\theta$. Namely, we prove that $(K^{1}_{\theta} \cap zH^1)^* = {\rm BMO}(\sigma_\alpha)$. The result implies a two-sided estimate for the operator norm of a finite Hankel matrix of size $n\times n$ via ${\rm BMO}(\mu_{2n})$-norm of its standard symbol, where $\mu_{2n}$ is the Haar measure on the group $\{\xi \in \mathbb{C}: \xi^{2n} = 1\}$.

The past and future wave operators on the singular spectrum

We consider averaged wave operators constructed for singular unitary operators $U_1$, $U_2$ and a bounded identification operator $A$. In the case of rank-two commutator $AU_1 - U_2A$, we show that averaged wave operators of past and future exist or do not exist simultaneously, and if they exist, they must coincide. As a consequence, we obtain some results concerning boundary behaviour of Cauchy-type integrals.
