Laughlin's function on a cylinder: plasma analogy and representation as a quantum polymer

We investigate Laughlin's fractional quantum Hall effect wave function in the cylinder geometry of Laughlin's integer quantum Hall effect argument, at filling factor 1/3. We show that the plasma analogy leads to a periodic density, and that the wave function admits a representation as a ``quantum polymer'', reminiscent of the quantum dimer model by Rokhsar and Kivelson. We explain how the representation can be exploited to compute the normalization and one-particle density in the limit of infinitely many particles.

Typical support and Sanov large deviations of correlated states

Discrete stationary classical processes as well as quantum lattice states are asymptotically confined to their respective typical support, the exponential growth rate of which is given by the (maximal ergodic) entropy. In the iid case the distinguishability of typical supports can be asymptotically specified by means of the relative entropy, according to Sanov's theorem. We give an extension to the correlated case, referring to the newly introduced class of HP-states.

A quantum version of Sanov's theorem

We present a quantum extension of a version of Sanov's theorem focussing on a hypothesis testing aspect of the theorem: There exists a sequence of typical subspaces for a given set $Ψ$ of stationary quantum product states asymptotically separating them from another fixed stationary product state. Analogously to the classical case, the exponential separating rate is equal to the infimum of the quantum relative entropy with respect to the quantum reference state over the set $Ψ$. However, while in the classical case the separating subsets can be chosen universal, in the sense that they depend only on the chosen set of i.i.d. processes, in the quantum case the choice of the separating subspaces depends additionally on the reference state.

Topological quantum numbers in the Hall effect

Topological quantum numbers account for the precise quantization that occurs in the integer Hall effect. In this theory, Kubo's formula for the conductance acquires a topological interpretation in terms of Chern numbers and their non-commutative analog, the Fredholm Indices.

Boundary Conditions for Bulk and Edge States in Quantum Hall Systems

For two dimensional Schroedinger Hamiltonians we formulate boundary conditions that split the Hilbert space according to the chirality of the eigenstates on the boundary. With magnetic fields, and in particular, for Quantum Hall Systems, this splitting corresponds to edge and bulk states. Applications to the integer and fractional Hall effect and some open problems are described.

Viscosity of Quantum Hall Fluids

The viscosity of quantum fluids with an energy gap at zero temperature is non-dissipative and is related to the adiabatic curvature on the space of flat background metrics (which plays the role of the parameter space). For a quantum Hall fluid on two dimensional tori this viscosity is computed. In this case the average viscosity is quantized and is proportional to the total magnetic flux through the torus.

Adiabatic Quantum Transport: Quantization and Fluctuations

Quillen's local index theorem is used to study the charge transport coefficients (adiabatic curvature) associated to the ground state of a Schrödinger operator for a charged (spinless) particle on a closed, multiply connected surface. The formula splits the adiabatic curvature into an explicit integral part and a fluctuating part which has a natural interpretation in terms of quantum chaos.
