Sigma resonance parameters from a $N_f=2$ lattice QCD simulation

In this work we present the analysis of the energy spectrum from a recent two-flavor ($N_f=2$) lattice QCD calculation for pion-pion scattering in the scalar, isoscalar channel (the $σ$-meson). The lattice simulation was performed for two quark masses corresponding to a pion mass of 315 MeV and 227 MeV. The $σ$-meson parameters are extracted using various parametrizations of the scattering amplitude. The results obtained from a chiral unitary parametrization are extrapolated to the physical point and read $M_σ=( 440^{+10}_{-16}(50) - i\,240(20)(25))$ MeV, where the uncertainties in the parentheses denote the stochastic and systematic ones. The behavior of the $σ$-meson parameters with increasing pion mass is discussed as well.

Chiral Extrapolations of the $\boldsymbol{ρ(770)}$ Meson in $\mathbf{N_f=2+1}$ Lattice QCD Simulations

Recent $N_f=2+1$ lattice data for meson-meson scattering in $p$-wave and isospin $I=1$ are analyzed using a unitarized model inspired by Chiral Perturbation Theory in the inverse-amplitude formulation for two and three flavors. Chiral extrapolations are performed that postdict phase shifts extracted from experiment quite well. In addition, the low-energy constants are compared to the ones from a recent analysis of $N_f=2$ lattice QCD simulations to check for the consistency of the hadronic model used here. Some inconsistencies are detected in the fits to $N_f=2+1$ data, in contrast to the previous analysis of $N_f=2$ data.

Model Selection for Pion Photoproduction

Partial-wave analysis of meson and photon-induced reactions is needed to enable the comparison of many theoretical approaches to data. In both energy-dependent and independent parametrizations of partial waves, the selection of the model amplitude is crucial. Principles of the $S$-matrix are implemented to different degree in different approaches, but a many times overlooked aspect concerns the selection of undetermined coefficients and functional forms for fitting, leading to a minimal yet sufficient parametrization. We present an analysis of low-energy neutral pion photoproduction using the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) in combination with criteria from information theory and $K$-fold cross validation. These methods are not yet widely known in the analysis of excited hadrons but will become relevant in the era of precision spectroscopy. The principle is first illustrated with synthetic data, then, its feasibility for real data is demonstrated by analyzing the latest available measurements of differential cross sections ($dσ/dΩ$), photon-beam asymmetries ($Σ$), and target asymmetry differential cross sections ($dσ_T/dΩ$) in the low energy regime.

Role of the strange quark in the rho(770) meson

Recently, the GWU lattice group has evaluated high-precision phase-shift data for $ππ$ scattering in the $I = 1$, $J = 1$ channel. Unitary Chiral Perturbation Theory describes these data well around the resonance region and for different pion masses. Moreover, it allows to extrapolate to the physical point and estimate the effect of the missing $K\bar{K}$ channel in the two-flavor lattice calculation. The absence of the strange quark in the lattice data leads to a lower $ρ$ mass, and the analysis with U$χ$PT shows that the $K \bar{K}$ channel indeed pushes the $ππ$-scattering phase shift upward, having a surprisingly large effect on the $ρ$-mass. The inelasticity is shown to be compatible with the experimental data. The analysis is then extended to all available two-flavor lattice simulations and similar mass shifts are observed. Chiral extrapolations of $N_f = 2 + 1$ lattice simulations for the $ρ(770)$ are also reported.

The pole structure of the Lambda(1405) in a recent QCD simulation

The $Λ(1405)$ baryon is difficult to detect in experiment, absent in many quark model calculations, and supposedly manifested through a two-pole structure. Its uncommon properties made it subject to numerous experimental and theoretical studies in recent years. Lattice-QCD eigenvalues for different quark masses were recently reported by the Adelaide group. We compare these eigenvalues to predictions of a model based on Unitary Chiral Perturbation Theory. The UCHPT calculation predicts the quark mass dependence remarkably well. It also explains the overlap pattern with different meson-baryon components, mainly $πΣ$ and $\bar KN$, at different quark masses. More accurate lattice QCD data are required to draw definite conclusions on the nature of the $Λ(1405)$.

Two-flavor Simulations of the $ρ(770)$ and the Role of the $K\bar K$ Channel

The $ρ(770)$ meson is the most extensively studied resonance in lattice QCD simulations in two ($N_f=2$) and three ($N_f=2+1$) flavor formulations. We analyze $N_f=2$ lattice scattering data using unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory, allowing not only for the extrapolation in mass but also in flavor, $N_f=2\to N_f=2+1$. The flavor extrapolation requires information from a global fit to $ππ$ and $πK$ phase shifts from experiment. While the chiral extrapolation of $N_f=2$ lattice data leads to masses of the $ρ(770)$ meson far below the experimental one, we find that the missing $K\bar{K}$ channel is able to explain this discrepancy.

Determination of the compositeness of resonances from decays: the case of the $B^0_s\to J/ψf_1(1285)$

We develop a method to measure the amount of compositeness of a resonance, mostly made as a bound state of two hadrons, by simultaneously measuring the rate of production of the resonance and the mass distribution of the two hadrons close to threshold. By using different methods of analysis we conclude that the method allows one to extract the value of 1-Z with about $0.1$ of uncertainty. The method is applied to the case of the $\bar B^0_s \to J/ψf_1(1285)$ decay, by looking at the resonance production and the mass distribution of $K \bar K^*$.

Strategies for an accurate determination of the X(3872) energy from QCD lattice simulations

We develop a method to determine accurately the binding energy of the X(3872) from lattice data for the DD* interaction. We show that, because of the small difference between the neutral and charged components of the X(3872), it is necessary to distinguish them in the energy levels of the lattice spectrum if one wishes to have a precise determination of the the binding energy of the X(3872). The analysis of the data requires the use of coupled channels. Depending on the number of levels available and the size of the box we determine the precision needed in the lattice energies to finally obtain a desired accuracy in the binding energy.

Predictions for the $\bar B^0 \to \bar K^{*0} X (YZ)$ and $\bar B^0_s \to ϕX (YZ)$ with $X(4160), Y(3940), Z(3930)$

We investigate the decay of $\bar B^0 \to \bar K^{*0} R$ and $\bar B^0_s \to ϕR$ with $R$ being the $X(4160)$, $Y(3940)$, $Z(3930)$ resonances. Under the assumption that these states are dynamically generated from the vector-vector interaction, as has been concluded from several theoretical studies, we use a reaction mechanism of quark production at the elementary level, followed by hadronization of one final $q \bar q$ pair into two vectors and posterior final state interaction of this pair of vector mesons to produce the resonances. With this procedure we are able to predict five ratios for these decays, which are closely linked to the dynamical nature of these states, and also predict the order of magnitude of the branching ratios which we find of the order of $10^{-4}$, well within the present measurable range. In order to further test the dynamical nature of these resonances we study the $\bar B^0_s \to ϕD^* \bar D^*$ and $\bar B^0_s \to ϕD_s^* \bar D_s^*$ decays close to the $D^* \bar D^*$ and $D_s^* \bar D_s^*$ thresholds and make predictions for the ratio of the mass distributions in these decays and the $\bar B^0_s \to ϕR$ decay widths. The measurement of these decays rates can help unravel the nature of these resonances.

Decays of double charmed meson molecules

The interaction between pseudoscalar and/or vector mesons can be studied using hidden gauge Lagrangians. In this framework, the interaction between charmed mesons has been studied. Furthermore, doubly charmed states are also predicted. These new states are near the $D^*D^*$ and $D^*D^*_s$ thresholds, and have spin-parity $J^P=1^+$. We evaluate the decay widths of these states, named as $R_{cc}(3970)$ and $S_{cc}(4100)$ (with strangeness), and obtain $44$ MeV for the non-strangeness, and $24$ MeV for the doubly charm-strange state. Essentially, the decay modes are $DD_{(s)}π$ and $DD_{(s)}γ$, being the $Dπ$ and $Dγ$ emitted by one of the $D^*$ meson which forms the molecule.

Decays of doubly charmed meson molecules

Several observed states close to the $D\bar{D}^*$ and $D^*_{(s)}\bar{D}^*_{(s)}$ thresholds, as the X(3872) and some XYZ particles can be described in terms of a two-meson molecule. Furthermore, doubly charmed states are also predicted. These new states are near the $D^*D^*$ and $D^*D^*_s$ thresholds, % Therefore, if the previous XYZ are molecules, then, there should be doubly charmed mesons with $J^P=1^+$ around the $D^*D^*$ threshold. %For this reason, it is important to evaluate observables related to them. Because of the spin$=1$, they do not decay into $DD$. In this article we compute decays to $DD^*$ and radiative decays of doubly charmed meson molecules into $DD_{(s)}γ$. and have spin-parity $J^P=1^+$. Their natural decay modes are $D_{(s)}D^*$, $DD_{(s)}π$ and $DD_{(s)}γ$ and $D^*D_{(s)}γ$. We evaluate the widths of these states, named here as $R_{cc}(3970)$ and $S_{cc}(4100)$, and obtain 44 MeV for the non-strangeness, and 24 MeV for the doubly charm-strange state. Essentially, the decay modes are $DD_{(s)}π$ and $DD_{(s)}γ$, being the $Dπ$ and $Dγ$ emitted by one of the $D^*$ meson which forms the molecule.

The width of the omega meson in the nuclear medium

We evaluate the width of the $ω$ meson in nuclear matter. We consider the free decay mode of the $ω$ into three pions, which is dominated by $ρπ$ decay, and replace the $ρ$ and $π$ propagators by their medium modified ones. We also take into account the quasielastic and inelastic processes induced by a vector-baryon interaction dominated by vector meson exchange, as well as the contributions coming from the $ω\to K \bar K$ mechanism with medium modified $K$, $\bar K$ propagators. We obtain a substantial increase of the $ω$ width in the medium, reaching a value of $129 \pm 10$ MeV at normal nuclear matter density for an $ω$ at rest, which comes mainly from $ωN \to ππN, ωN N \to πNN$ processes associated to the dominant $ω\to ρπ$ decay mode. The value of the width increases moderately with momentum, reaching values of around 200 MeV at 600 MeV/c.

Interaction of vector mesons with baryons and nuclei

After some short introductory remarks on particular issues on the vector mesons in nuclei, in this paper we present a short review of recent developments concerning the interaction of vector mesons with baryons and with nuclei from a modern perspective using the local hidden gauge formalism for the interaction of vector mesons. We present results for the vector baryon interaction and in particular for the resonances which appear as composite states, dynamically generated from the interaction of vector mesons with baryons, taking also the mixing of these states with pseudoscalars and baryons into account. We then venture into the charm sector, reporting on hidden charm baryon states around 4400 MeV, generated from the interaction of vector mesons and baryons with charm, which have a strong repercussion on the properties of the $J/ΨN$ interaction. We also address the interaction of $K^*$ with nuclei and make suggestions to measure the predicted huge width in the medium by means of the transparency ratio. The formalism is extended to study the phenomenon of $J/ψ$ suppression in nuclei via $J/ψ$ photoproduction reactions.

The $X(3872) \to J/ψγ$ decay in the $D \bar D^*$ molecular picture

From a picture of the X(3872) where the resonance is a bound state of $\bar{D}D^*-c.c.$, we evaluate the decay width into the $J/ψγ$ channel, which is sensitive to the internal structure of this state. For this purpose we evaluate the loops through which the X(3872) decays into its components, and the $J/ψ$ and the photon are radiated from these components. We use the local hidden gauge approach extrapolated to SU(4) with a particular SU(4) breaking. The radiative decay involves anomalous couplings and we obtain acceptable values which are compared to experiments and results of other calculations. Simultaneusly, we evaluate the decay rate for the X(3872) into $J/ψω$ and $J/ψρ$, and the results obtained for the ratio of these decay widths are compatible with the experiment. We also show the grossly unacceptable results that come from taking only the $\bar{D}^0D^{*0}+c.c.$ component.

$J/ψ$ reaction mechanisms and suppression in the nuclear medium

Recent studies of the interaction of vector mesons with nuclei make possible and opportune the study of the interaction of the $J/ψ$ with nuclei and the investigation of the origin of the $J/ψ$ suppression in its propagation thorough a nuclear medium. We observe that the transition of $J/ψN$ to $VN$ with $V$ being a light vector, $ρ, ω,ϕ$, together with the inelastic channels, $J/ψN \to \bar D Λ_c$ and $J/ψN \to \bar D Σ_c$ leads to a particular shape of the inelastic cross section. Analogously, we consider the mechanisms where the exchanged $D$ collides with a nucleon and gives $πΛ_c$ or $πΣ_c$. The cross section has a peak around $\sqrt s=4415$ MeV, where the $J/ψN$ couples to a resonance predicted recently. We study the transparency ratio for electron induced $J/ψ$ production in nuclei at about 10 GeV and find that 30 - 35% of the $J/ψ$ produced in heavy nuclei are absorbed inside the nucleus. This ratio is in line with depletions of $J/ψ$ though matter observed in other reactions.

Interaction of vector mesons with baryons and vectors in the nuclear medium

In this talk we present a short review of recent developments concerning the interaction of vector mesons with baryons and with nuclei. We begin with the hidden gauge formalism for the interaction of vector mesons, then review results for vector baryon interaction and in particular the resonances which appear as composite states, dynamically generated from the interaction of vector mesons with baryons. New developments concerning the mixing of these states with pseudoscalars and baryons are also reported. We include some discussion on the $5/2^+$ $Δ$ resonances around 2000 MeV, where we suggest that the $Δ(2000)5/2^+$ resonance, which comes in the PDG from averaging a set of resonances appearing around 1700 MeV and another one around 2200 MeV, corresponds indeed to two distinct resonances. We also report on a hidden charm baryon state around 4400 MeV coming from the interaction of vector mesons and baryons with charm, and how this state has some repercussion in the $J/ψ$ suppression in nuclei. The interaction of $K^*$ in nuclei is also reported and suggestions are made to measure by means of the transparency ratio the huge width in the medium that the theoretical calculations predict. The formalism is extended to $J/ψ$ interaction with nuclei and the transparency ratio for $J/ψ$ photoproduction in nuclei is studied and shown to be a good tool to find possible baryon states which couple to $J/ψN$.

Nuclear medium effects on the $\bar K^*$ meson

The $\bar K^*$ meson in dense matter is analyzed by means of a unitary approach in coupled channels based on the local hidden gauge formalism. The $\bar K^*$ self-energy and the corresponding $\bar K^*$ spectral function in the nuclear medium are obtained. We observe that the $\bar K^*$ develops a width in matter up to five times bigger than in free space. We also estimate the transparency ratio of the $γA \to K^+ K^{*-} A^\prime$ reaction. This ratio is an excellent tool to detect experimentally modifications of the $\bar K^*$ meson in dense matter.
