Midinfrared Semiconductor Photonics - A Roadmap

Semiconductor photonic devices operating in the midwave infrared (mid-IR, which we roughly define here as wavelengths spanning 3 to 14 microns) uniquely address a wide range of current practical needs. These include chemical sensing, environmental monitoring, industrial process control, medical diagnostics, thermal imaging, LIDAR, free space optical communication, and security monitoring. However, mid-IR device technologies are currently still works in progress that are generally much less mature than their near infrared and visible counterparts. Not only are most of the relevant materials more difficult to grow and process, but attainment of the desired optical device performance is often fundamentally more challenging. This Roadmap will review the leading applications for mid-IR optoelectronics, summarize the status and deficiencies of current device technologies, and then suggest possible roadmaps for improving and maturing the performance, manufacturability, and cost of each device type so the critical needs that are uniquely addressed by mid-IR photonics can be satisfied.

Coherent Band-Edge Oscillations and Dynamic LO Phonon Mode Splitting as Evidence for Polaronic Coupling in Perovskites

The coherence of collective modes, such as phonons, and their modulation of the electronic states are long sought in complex systems, which is a cross-cutting issue in photovoltaics and quantum electronics. In photovoltaic cells and lasers based on metal halide perovskites, the presence of polaronic coupling, i.e., photocarriers dressed by the macroscopic motion of charged lattice, assisted by terahertz (THz) longitudinal optical (LO) phonons, has been intensely studied yet still debated. This may be key for explaining the remarkable properties of the perovskite materials, e.g., defect tolerance, long charge lifetimes and diffusion length. Here we use the intense single-cycle THz pulse with the peak electric field up to $E_{THz}=$1000\,kV/cm to drive coherent band-edge oscillations at room temperature in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$. We reveal the oscillatory behavior dominantly to a specific quantized lattice vibration mode at $\omega_{\mathrm{LO}}\sim$4 THz, being both dipole and momentum forbidden. THz-driven coherent dynamics exhibits distinguishing features: the room temperature coherent oscillations at $\omega_{\mathrm{LO}}$ longer than 1 ps in both single crystals and thin films; the {\em mode-selective} modulation of different band edge states assisted by electron-phonon ($e$-$ph$) interaction; {\em dynamic mode splitting} controlled by temperature due to entropy and anharmonicity of organic cations. Our results demonstrate intense THz-driven coherent band-edge modulation as a powerful probe of electron-lattice coupling phenomena and provide compelling implications for polaron correlations in perovskites.

SDSS-RASS: Next Generation of Cluster-Finding Algorithms

We outline here the next generation of cluster-finding algorithms. We show how advances in Computer Science and Statistics have helped develop robust, fast algorithms for finding clusters of galaxies in large multi-dimensional astronomical databases like the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Specifically, this paper presents four new advances: (1) A new semi-parametric algorithm - nicknamed ``C4'' - for jointly finding clusters of galaxies in the SDSS and ROSAT All-Sky Survey databases; (2) The introduction of the False Discovery Rate into Astronomy; (3) The role of kernel shape in optimizing cluster detection; (4) A new determination of the X-ray Cluster Luminosity Function which has bearing on the existence of a ``deficit'' of high redshift, high luminosity clusters. This research is part of our ``Computational AstroStatistics'' collaboration (see Nichol et al. 2000) and the algorithms and techniques discussed herein will form part of the ``Virtual Observatory'' analysis toolkit.
