Relativistic two-body calculation of $b\bar{b}$-mesons radiative decays

This paper is a prosecution of a previous work where we presented a unified two-fermion covariant scheme which produced very precise results for the masses of light and heavy mesons. We extend the analysis to some radiative decays of mesons $\Upsilon,\,\chi_{b2}\,,h_b\,,\chi_{b1}\,,\chi_{b0}\,,\eta_b\,$ and we calculate their branching ratios and their widths. For most of them we can make a comparison with experimental data finding a good agreement. For the decays for which data are not available we compare ours with other recent theoretical previsions.

Relativistic two fermion treatment of hyperfine transitions

A system of two fermions with different masses and interacting by the Coulomb potential is presented in a completely covariant framework. The spin-spin interaction, including the anomalous magnetic moments of the two fermions, is added by means of a Breit term. We solve the resulting fourth order differential system by evaluating the spectrum and the eigenfunctions. The interaction vertex with an external electromagnetic field is then determined. The relativistic eigenfunctions are used to study the photon emission from a hyperfine transition and are checked for the calculation of the Lamb shift due to the electron vacuum polarization in the muonic Hydrogen.

Effective action for fermions with anomalous magnetic moment from Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation

In this paper we calculate the effective action for neutral particles with anomalous magnetic moment in an external magnetic and electric field. We show that we can take advantage from the Foldy Wouthuysen transformation for such systems, determined in our previous works: indeed, by this transformation we have explicitly evaluated the diagonalized Hamiltonian, allowing to present a closed form for the corresponding effective action and for the partition function at finite temperature from which the thermodynamical potentials can be calculated.

Unified covariant treatment of hyperfine splitting for heavy and light mesons

This paper aims at proving the fundamental role of a relativistic formulation for quarkonia models. We present a completely covariant description of a two-quark system interacting by the Cornell potential with a Breit term describing the hyperfine splitting. Using an appropriate procedure to calculate the Breit correction, we find heavy meson masses in excellent agreement with experimental data. Moreover, also when applied to light quarks and even taking average values of the running coupling constant, we prove that covariance properties and hyperfine splitting are sufficient to explain the light mesons spectrum and to give a very good agreement with the data.

Particles with anomalous magnetic moment in external e.m. fields: the proper time formulation

In this paper we evaluate the expression for the Green function of a pseudo-classical spinning particle interacting with constant electromagnetic external fields by taking into account the anomalous magnetic and electric moments of the particle. The spin degrees of freedom are described in terms of Grassmann variables and the evolution operator is obtained through the Fock-Schwinger proper time method.

Perturbation Theory for Metastable States of the Dirac Equation with Quadratic Vector Interaction

The spectral problem of the Dirac equation in an external quadratic vector potential is considered using the methods of the perturbation theory. The problem is singular and the perturbation series is asymptotic, so that the methods for dealing with divergent series must be used. Among these, the Distributional Borel Sum appears to be the most well suited tool to give answers and to describe the spectral properties of the system. A detailed investigation is made in one and in three space dimensions with a central potential. We present numerical results for the Dirac equation in one space dimension: these are obtained by determining the perturbation expansion and using the Pad\'e approximants for calculating the distributional Borel transform. A complete agreement is found with previous non-perturbative results obtained by the numerical solution of the singular boundary value problem and the determination of the density of the states from the continuous spectrum.

Foldy-Wouthuysen Transformation for a Spinning Particle with Anomalous Magnetic Moment

We study the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for a pseudoclassical particle with anomalous magnetic moment in an external, stationary electromagnetic field. We show that the transformation can be expressed in a closed form for neutral particles in purely electrostatic fields and for neutral and charged particles in external magnetostatic fields. The explicit expressions of the diagonalized Hamiltonians are calculated.

States of the Dirac equation in confining potentials

We study the Dirac equation in confining potentials with pure vector coupling, proving the existence of metastable states with longer and longer lifetimes as the non-relativistic limit is approached and eventually merging with continuity into the Schrödinger bound states. We believe that the existence of these states could be relevant in high energy model construction and in understanding possible resonant scattering effects in systems like Graphene. We present numerical results for the linear and the harmonic cases and we show that the the density of the states of the continuous spectrum is well described by a sum of Breit-Wigner lines. The width of the line with lowest positive energy, as expected, reproduces very well the Schwinger pair production rate for a linear potential: we thus suggest a different way of obtaining informations on the pair production in unbounded, non uniform electric fields, where very little is known.

Spinning Particle with Anomalous Magnetic Moment in an External Plane Wave Field

In this paper we study the interaction of a Dirac-Pauli particle with an electromagnetic plane wave, by using a previously given generalization of the pseudo-classical Lagrangian for a spinning particle with an anomalous magnetic moment. We derive the explicit expressions for the eigenfunctions and the Green's functions of the theory. We discuss the validity of the semi-classical approach by comparing the wavefunctions with the (pseudo)-classical solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation.

Two fermion relativistic bound states: hyperfine shifts

We discuss the hyperfine shifts of the Positronium levels in a relativistic framework, starting from a two fermion wave equation where, in addition to the Coulomb potential, the magnetic interaction between spins is described by a Breit term. We write the system of four first order differential equations describing this model. We discuss its mathematical features, mainly in relation to possible singularities that may appear at finite values of the radial coordinate. We solve the boundary value problems both in the singular and non singular cases and we develop a perturbation scheme, well suited for numerical computations, that allows to calculate the hyperfine shifts for any level, according to well established physical arguments that the Breit term must be treated at the first perturbative order. We discuss our results, comparing them with the corresponding values obtained from semi-classical expansions.

Two fermion relativistic bound states

We consider the relativistic quantum mechanics of a two interacting fermions system. We first present a covariant formulation of the kinematics of the problem and give a short outline of the classical results. We then quantize the system with a general interaction potential and deduce the explicit equations in a spherical basis. The case of the Coulomb interaction is studied in detail by numerical methods, solving the eigenvalue problem for J=0, J=1, J=2 and determining the spectral curves for a varying ratio of the mass of the interacting particles. Details of the computations, together with a perturbative approach in the mass ratio and an extended description of the ground states of the Para- and Orthopositronium are given in Appendix.

Spinning particle in an external linearized gravitational wave field

We study the interaction of a scalar and a spinning particle with a coherent linearized gravitational wave field treated as a classical spin two external field. The spin degrees of freedom of the spinning particle are described by skew-commuting variables. We derive the explicit expressions for the eigenfunctions and the Green's functions of the theory. The discussion is exact within the approximation of neglecting radiative corrections and we prove that the result is completely determined by the semiclassical contribution.

Scalar and spinning particles in a plane wave field

We study the quantization problem of relativistic scalar and spinning particles interacting with a radiation electromagnetic field by using the path integral and the external source method. The spin degrees of freedom are described in terms of Grassmann variables and the Feynman kernel is obtained through functional integration on both Bose and Fermi variables. We provide rigourous proof that the Feynman amplitudes are only determined by the classical contribution and we explicitly evaluate the propagators.

The coisotropic subgroup structure of SL_q(2,R)

We study the coisotropic subgroup structure of standard SL_q(2,R) and the corresponding embeddable quantum homogeneous spaces. While the subgroups S^1 and R_+ survive undeformed in the quantization as coalgebras, we show that R is deformed to a family of quantum coisotropic subgroups whose coalgebra can not be extended to an Hopf algebra. We explicitly describe the quantum homogeneous spaces and their double cosets.

Effective Hamiltonian with holomorphic variables

The pure-quantum self-consistent harmonic approximation (PQSCHA) permits to study a quantum system by means of an effective classical Hamiltonian - depending on quantum coupling and temperature - and classical-like expressions for the averages of observables. In this work the PQSCHA is derived in terms of the holomorphic variables connected to a set of bosonic operators. The holomorphic formulation, based on the path integral for the Weyl symbol of the density matrix, makes it possible to approach directly general Hamiltonians given in terms of bosonic creation and annihilation operators.

Effective Hamiltonian, Mori Product and Quantum Dynamics

An appropriate extension of the effective potential theory is presented that permits the approximate calculation of the dynamical correlation functions for quantum systems. These are obtained by evaluating the generating functionals of the Mori products of quantities related to the relaxation functions in the (PQSCHA) pure self consistent harmonic approximation.

The approach to the calculation of quantum dynamical correlation functions is presented in the framework of the Mori theory. An unified treatment of classic and quantum dynamics is given in terms of Weyl representation of operators and holomorphic variables.
