Performance of a Tungsten-Cerium Fluoride Sampling Calorimeter in High-Energy Electron Beam Tests

A prototype for a sampling calorimeter made out of cerium fluoride crystals interleaved with tungsten plates, and read out by wavelength-shifting fibres, has been exposed to beams of electrons with energies between 20 and 150 GeV, produced by the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron accelerator complex. The performance of the prototype is presented and compared to that of a Geant4 simulation of the apparatus. Particular emphasis is given to the response uniformity across the channel front face, and to the prototype's energy resolution.

Proof-of-principle of a new geometry for sampling calorimetry using inorganic scintillator plates

A novel geometry for a sampling calorimeter employing inorganic scintillators as an active medium is presented. To overcome the mechanical challenges of construction, an innovative light collection geometry has been pioneered, that minimises the complexity of construction. First test results are presented, demonstrating a successful signal extraction. The geometry consists of a sampling calorimeter with passive absorber layers interleaved with layers of an active medium made of inorganic scintillating crystals. Wavelength-shifting (WLS) fibres run along the four long, chamfered edges of the stack, transporting the light to photodetectors at the rear. To maximise the amount of scintillation light reaching the WLS fibres, the scintillator chamfers are depolished. It is shown herein that this concept is working for cerium fluoride (CeF$_3$) as a scintillator. Coupled to it, several different types of materials have been tested as WLS medium. In particular, materials that might be sufficiently resistant to the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider radiation environment, such as cerium-doped Lutetium-Yttrium Orthosilicate (LYSO) and cerium-doped quartz, are compared to conventional plastic WLS fibres. Finally, an outlook is presented on the possible optimisation of the different components, and the construction and commissioning of a full calorimeter cell prototype is presented.

Elastic constants and volume changes associated with two high-pressure rhombohedral phase transformations in vanadium

We present results from ab initio calculations of the mechanical properties of the rhombohedral phase (beta) of vanadium metal reported in recent experiments, and other predicted high-pressure phases (gamma and bcc), focusing on properties relevant to dynamic experiments. We find that the volume change associated with these transitions is small: no more than 0.15% (for beta - gamma). Calculations of the single crystal and polycrystal elastic moduli (stress-strain coefficients) reveal a remarkably small discontinuity in the shear modulus and other elastic properties across the phase transitions even at zero temperature where the transitions are first order.

One million year old groundwater in the Sahara revealed by krypton-81 and chlorine-36

Measurements of 81Kr/Kr in deep groundwater from the Nubian Aquifer (Egypt) were performed by a new laser-based atom-counting method. 81Kr ages range from \~2x10^5 to ~1x10^6 yr, correlate with 36Cl/Cl ratios, and are consistent with lateral flow of groundwater from a recharge area near the Uweinat Uplift in SW Egypt. Low delta-2H values of the 81Kr-dated groundwater reveal a recurrent Atlantic moisture source during Pleistocene pluvial periods. These results indicate that the 81Kr method for dating old groundwater is robust and such measurements can now be applied to a wide range of hydrologic problems.

The FIRST Efficient Gravitational Lens Survey

We have found three gravitational lenses (two are new) by observing 34 likely FIRST radio lobes with APM galaxy counterparts. We expect to find $\sim30$ such lenses in over the next few years, which will significantly improve lensing constraints on galaxy structure and cosmology.

On a biphononic origin of the 1125 cm^(-1) absorption band in cuprous oxide

We report on the IR spectroscopic studies in both reflection (50-900 cm^{-1}) and transmission (900-3000 cm^{-1}) mode of the vibration spectrum of the cuprous oxide. A detailed analysis based on a comparison of the temperature dependences of the absorption band at 1125 cm^{-1} and of IR and Raman active fundamental vibrations results in assignment of the former to a biphonon.

Weak Lensing by Large-Scale Structure with the FIRST Radio Survey

The coherent image distortions induced by weak gravitational lensing can be used to measure the power spectrum of density inhomogeneities in the universe. We present our on-going effort to detect this effect with the FIRST radio survey, which currently contains about 400,000 sources over 4,200 square degrees, and thus provides a unique resource for this purpose. We discuss the sensitivity of our measurement in the context of various cosmological models. We then discuss the crucial issue of systematic effects, the most serious of which are source fragmentation, image-noise correlation, and VLA-beam anisotropy. After accounting for these effects, we expect our experiment to yield a detection, or at least a tight upper limit, for the weak lensing power spectrum on 0.2-20 degree scales.
