CAS - CERN Accelerator School: Accelerators for Medical Applications

These proceedings collate lectures given at the course on Accelerators for Medical Applications, organised by the CERN Accelerator School (CAS). The course was held at the Eventhotel Pyramide, V\"osendorf, Austria from 26 May to 5 June, in collaboration with MedAustron. Following introductory lectures on radiobiological and oncological issues, the basic requirements on accelera- tors and beam delivery are reviewed. The medical applications of linear accelerators, cyclotrons and synchrotrons are then be treated in some detail, followed by lectures on the production and use of radioisotopes and a look at some of the acceleration techniques for the future.

Proceedings of the CAS - CERN Accelerator School: Power Converters, Baden, Switzerland, 7-14 May 2014

These proceedings collate lectures given at the twenty-eighth specialized course organised by the CERN Accelerator School (CAS). The course was held at the Hotel du Parc, Baden, Switzerland from 7 - 14 May 2014, in collaboration with the Paul Scherrer Institute. Following introductory lectures on accelerators and the requirements on power converters, the course covered components and topologies of the different types of power converters needed for particle accelerators. Issues of design, control and exploitation in a sometimes-hostile environment were addressed. Site visits to ABB and PSI provided an insight into state-of-the-art power converter production and operation, while topical seminars completed the programme.

Proceedings of the CAS - CERN Accelerator School: Superconductivity for Accelerators, Erice, Italy, 24 Apr - 4 May 2013

These proceedings collate lectures given at the twenty-seventh specialized course organised by the CERN Accelerator School (CAS). The course was held at the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture (EMFCSC) in Erice, Italy, from 24 April to 4 May 2013. Following recapitulation lectures on basic accelerator physics and superconductivity, the course covered topics related to the design, production and operation of superconducting RF systems and superconducting magnets for accelerators. The participants pursued one of six case studies in order to get 'hands-on' experience of the issues connected with the design of superconducting systems. A series of topical seminars completed the programme.

An Application for Research: the Large Hadron Collider

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) machine at CERN was designed and built primarily to find or exclude the existence of the Higgs boson, for which a large amount of data is needed by the LHC experiments. This requires operation at high luminosity, which in turn requires running with thousands of high-intensity proton bunches in the machine. After quantifying the data required by the experiments and elucidating the LHC parameters needed to achieve this, this paper explains how the LHC beams are fabricated from the pulse(s) coming from the CERN Duoplasmatron source.

Beam Extraction and Transport

This chapter gives an introduction to low-energy beam transport systems, and discusses the typically used magnetostatic elements (solenoid, dipoles and quadrupoles) and electrostatic elements (einzel lens, dipoles and quadrupoles). The ion beam emittance, beam space-charge effects and the physics of ion source extraction are introduced. Typical computer codes for analysing and designing ion optical systems are mentioned, and the trajectory tracking method most often used for extraction simulations is described in more detail.

Proceedings of the CAS - CERN Accelerator School: Course on High Power Hadron Machines, Bilbao, Spain, 24 May - 2 Jun 2011

These proceedings collate lectures given at the twenty-fifth specialized course organised by the CERN Accelerator School (CAS). The course was held in Bilbao, Spain from 24 May to 2 June 2011, in collaboration with ESS Bilbao. The course covered the background accelerator physics, different types of particle accelerators and the underlying accelerator systems and technologies, all from the perspective of high beam power. The participants pursued one of six case studies in order to get "hands-on" experience of the issues connected with high power machines.

Proceedings of the CAS - CERN Accelerator School: RF for Accelerators, Ebeltoft, Denmark, 8 - 17 Jun 2010

These proceedings present the lectures given at the twenty-fourth specialized course organized by the CERN Accelerator School (CAS). The course was held in Ebeltoft, Denmark, from 8-17 June, 2010 in collaboration with Aarhus University, with the topic 'RF for Accelerators' While this topic has been covered by CAS previously, early in the 1990s and again in 2000, it was recognized that recent advances in the field warranted an updated course. Following introductory courses covering the background physics, the course attempted to cover all aspects of RF for accelerators; from RF power generation and transport, through cavity and coupler design, electronics and low level control, to beam diagnostics and RF gymnastics. The lectures were supplemented with several sessions of exercises, which were completed by discussion sessions on the solutions.
