SEMPO -- Retrieving poles, residues and zeros in the complex frequency plane from an arbitrary spectral response

The Singularity Expansion Method Parameter Optimizer -- SEMPO -- is a toolbox to extract the complex poles, zeros and residues of an arbitrary response function acquired along the real frequency axis. SEMPO allows to determine this full set of complex parameters of linear physical systems from their spectral responses only, without prior information about the system. The method leverages on the Singularity Expansion Method of the physical signal. This analytical expansion of the meromorphic function in the complex frequency plane motivates the use of the Cauchy method and auto-differentiation-based optimization approach to retrieve the complex poles, zeros and residues from the knowledge of the spectrum over a finite and real spectral range. Both approaches can be sequentially associated to provide highly accurate reconstructions of physical signals in large spectral windows. The performances of SEMPO are assessed and analysed in several configurations that include the dielectric permittivity of materials and the optical response spectra of various optical metasurfaces.

TRANSP integrated modeling code for interpretive and predictive analysis of tokamak plasmas

This paper provides a comprehensive review of the TRANSP code, a sophisticated tool for interpretive and predictive analysis of tokamak plasmas, detailing its major capabilities and features. It describes the equations for particle, power, and momentum balance analysis, as well as the poloidal field diffusion equations. The paper outlines the spatial and time grids used in TRANSP and details the equilibrium assumptions and solvers. Various models for heating and current drive \mc{and radiation}, including updates to the NUBEAM model, are discussed. The handling of large-scale events such as sawtooth crashes and pellet injections is examined, along with the predictive capabilities for advancing plasma profiles. The integration of TRANSP with the ITER Integrated Modeling and Analysis Suite (IMAS) is highlighted, demonstrating enhanced data access and analysis capabilities. Additionally, the paper discusses best practices and continuous integration techniques to enhance TRANSP's robustness. The suite of TRANSP tools, designed for efficient data analysis and simulation, further supports the optimization of tokamak operations and coupling with other tokamak codes. Continuous development and support ensure that TRANSP remains a major code for the analysis of experimental data for controlled thermonuclear fusion, maintaining its critical role in supporting the optimization of tokamak operations and advancing fusion research.

Observation of Half Quantum Vortices in an Exciton-Polariton Condensate

Singly quantized vortices have been already observed in many systems including the superfluid helium, Bose Einstein condensates of dilute atomic gases, and condensates of exciton polaritons in the solid state. Two dimensional superfluids carrying spin are expected to demonstrate a different type of elementary excitations referred to as half quantum vortices characterized by a pi rotation of the phase and a pi rotation of the polarization vector when circumventing the vortex core. We detect half quantum vortices in an exciton-polariton condensate by means of polarization resolved interferometry, real space spectroscopy and phase imaging. Half quantum vortices coexist with single quantum vortices in our sample.

Dynamics of long-range order in an exciton-polariton condensate

We report on time resolved measurements of the first order spatial coherence in an exciton polariton Bose-Einstein condensate. Long range spatial coherence is found to set in right at the onset of stimulated scattering, on a picosecond time scale. The coherence reaches its maximum value after the population and decays slower, staying up to a few hundreds of picoseconds. This behavior can be qualitatively reproduced, using a stochastic classical field model describing interaction between the polariton condensate and the exciton reservoir within a disordered potential.

Microcavity exciton-polariton mediated Raman scattering: Experiments and theory

We studied the intensity of resonant Raman scattering due to optical phonons in a planar II-VI-type semiconductor microcavity in the regime of strong coupling between light and matter. Two different sets of independent experiments were performed at near outgoing resonance with the middle polariton (MP)branch of the cavity. In the first, the Stokes-shifted photons were kept at exact resonance with the MP, varying the photonic or excitonic character of the polariton. In the second, only the incoming light wavelength was varied, and the resonant profile of the inelastic scattered intensity was studied when the system was tuned out of the resonant condition. Taking some matrix elements as free parameters, both independent experiments are quantitatively described by a model which incorporates lifetime effects in both excitons and photons, and the coupling of the cavity photons to the electron-hole continuum. The model is solved using a Green's function approach which treats the exciton-photon coupling nonperturbatively.

Exciton-polariton condensation in a natural two dimensional trap

Bose Einstein condensation of exciton-polaritons has recently been reported in homogeneous structures only affected by random in-plane fluctuations. We have taken advantage of the ubiquitous defects in semiconductor microcavities to reveal the spontaneous dynamical condensation of polaritons in the quantised levels of a trap. We observe condensation in several quantized states, taking their snapshots in real and reciprocal space. We show also the effect of particle interactions for high occupations numbers, revealed by a change in the confined wave function toward the Thomas Fermi profile.

Coexisting Non-Equilibrium Condensates with Long-Range Spatial Coherence in Semiconductor Microcavities

Real and momentum space spectrally resolved images of microcavity polariton emission in the regime of condensation are investigated under non resonant excitation using a laser source with reduced intensity fluctuations on the timescale of the exciton lifetime. We observe that the polariton emission consists of many macroscopically occupied modes. Lower energy modes are strongly localized by the photonic potential disorder on a scale of few microns. Higher energy modes have finite k-vectors and are delocalized over 10-15 microns. All the modes exhibit long range spatial coherence comparable to their size. We provide a theoretical model describing the behavior of the system with the results of the simulations in good agreement with the experimental observations. We show that the multimode emission of the polariton condensate is a result of its nonequilibrium character, the interaction with the local photonic potential and the reduced intensity fluctuations of the excitation laser.

Synchronized and Desynchronized Phases of Exciton-Polariton Condensates in the Presence of Disorder

Condensation of exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities takes place despite in plane disorder. Below the critical density the inhomogeneity of the potential seen by the polaritons strongly limits the spatial extension of the ground state. Above the critical density, in presence of weak disorder, this limitation is spontaneously overcome by the non linear interaction, resulting in an extended synchronized phase. This mechanism is clearly evidenced by spatial and spectral studies, coupled to interferometric measurements. In case of strong disorder, several non phase-locked (independent) condensates can be evidenced. The transition from synchronized phase to desynchronized phase is addressed considering multiple realizations of the disorder.

Phase diagram for condensation of microcavity polaritons: from theory to practice

The first realization of a polariton condensate was recently achieved in a CdTe microcavity [Kasprzak et al., Nature 443, 409 (2006)]. We compare the experimental phase boundaries, for various detunings and cryostat temperatures, with those found theoretically from a model which accounts for features of microcavity polaritons such as reduced dimensionality, internal composite structure, disorder in the quantum wells, polariton-polariton interactions, and finite lifetime.

Control of non-Markovian effects in the dynamics of polaritons in semiconductor microcavities

We report on time-resolved photoluminescence from semiconductor microcavities showing that an optically controllable mechanism exists to turn on and off memory effects in a polariton system. By increasing the laser pumping pulse intensity we observe revivals of the decaying time-resolved photoluminescence signal, a manifestly non-Markovian behavior of the optically active polaritons. Based on an open quantum system approach we perform a comprehensive analytical and numerical study of the coupling of optically active polaritons to a structured reservoir to confirm the origin of the observed features. Our findings show that negative detunings and strong excitation should occur simultaneously for memory effects to take place.

Quantised Vortices in an Exciton-Polariton Fluid

One of the most striking quantum effects in a low temperature interacting Bose gas is superfluidity. First observed in liquid 4He, this phenomenon has been intensively studied in a variety of systems for its amazing features such as the persistence of superflows and the quantization of the angular momentum of vortices. The achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in dilute atomic gases provided an exceptional opportunity to observe and study superfluidity in an extremely clean and controlled environment. In the solid state, Bose-Einstein condensation of exciton polaritons has now been reported several times. Polaritons are strongly interacting light-matter quasi-particles, naturally occurring in semiconductor microcavities in the strong coupling regime and constitute a very interesting example of composite bosons. Even though pioneering experiments have recently addressed the propagation of a fluid of coherent polaritons, still no conclusive evidence is yet available of its superfluid nature. In the present Letter, we report the observation of spontaneous formation of pinned quantised vortices in the Bose-condensed phase of a polariton fluid by means of phase and amplitude imaging. Theoretical insight into the possible origin of such vortices is presented in terms of a generalised Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The implications of our observations concerning the superfluid nature of the non-equilibrium polariton fluid are finally discussed.

Optical Anisotropy and Pinning of the Linear Polarization of Light in Semiconductor Microcavities

We report a strong experimental evidence of the optical anisotropy in a CdTe-based microcavity: the polarization of light is pinned to one of the crystallographic axes independently on the polarization of the excitation. The polarization degree depends strongly on the excitation power, reaching almost 100 % in the stimulated regime. The relaxation time of the polarization is about 1 ns. We argue that all this is an effect of a splitting of the polariton doublet at k=0. We consider different sources for the splitting and conclude that the most likely one is optical birefringence in the mirrors and/or the cavity.

Time-Resolved Spectroscopy of Single Excitons Bound to Pairs of Te Isoelectronic Impurity Centers in ZnSe

Tellurium impurity centers in ZnSe were individually probed with time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Resolution-limited peaks with an ultra-low spatial density originate in the recombination of excitons deeply bound to isolated nearest-neighbor isoelectronic Te pairs (Te2). This interpretation is confirmed by ab-initio calculations. The peaks reveal anti-bunched photon emission and a doublet structure polarized along [110] and [-110]. We analyze the time-resolved PL decay to clarify the role of the dark states in the spin relaxation and radiative recombination of single fine-structure split excitons.

Effect of growth conditions on optical properties of CdSe/ZnSe single quantum dots

In this work, we have investigated the optical properties of two samples of CdSe quantum dots by using submicro-photoluminescence spectroscopy. The effect of vicinal-surface GaAs substrates on their properties has been also assessed. The thinner sample, grown on a substrate with vicinal surface, includes only dots with a diameter of less than 10 nm (type A islands). Islands of an average diameter of about 16 nm (type B islands) that are related to a phase transition via a Stranski-Krastanow growth process are also distributed in the thicker sample grown on an oriented substrate. We have studied the evolution of lineshapes of PL spectra for these two samples by improving spatial resolution that was achieved using nanoapertures or mesa structures. It was found that the use of a substrate with the vicinal surface leads to the suppression of excitonic PL emitted from a wetting layer.

Polarization Control of the Non-linear Emission on Semiconductor Microcavities

The degree of circular polarization ($\wp$) of the non-linear emission in semiconductor microcavities is controlled by changing the exciton-cavity detuning. The polariton relaxation towards \textbf{K} $\sim 0$ cavity-like states is governed by final-state stimulated scattering. The helicity of the emission is selected due to the lifting of the degeneracy of the $\pm 1$ spin levels at \textbf{K} $\sim 0$. At short times after a pulsed excitation $\wp$ reaches very large values, either positive or negative, as a result of stimulated scattering to the spin level of lowest energy ($+1/-1$ spin for positive/negative detuning).
