The active Boltzmann equation: From dilute collisions to exact kinetic theory
We construct an exact kinetic theory for dilute aligning self-propelled particles by closing the BBGKY hierarchy non-locally, retaining the pair correlations during each collision. Mean-field closures miss these correlations entirely and predict a divergent self-diffusion coefficient. Our theory resolves this failure and agrees quantitatively with simulations. For aligning couplings, a physical regularization eliminates secular terms from diverging collision times. The theory yields effective Langevin equations with analytic noise correlations which is extrapolated to higher densities.
