Dynamics of weighted shifts on $\ell^p$-sums and $c_0$-sums

We investigate a generalization of weighted shifts where each weight $w_k$ is replaced by an operator $T_k$ going from a Banach space $X_k$ to another one $X_{k-1}$. We then look if the obtained shift operator $B_{(T_k)}$ defined on the $\ell^p$-sum (or the $c_0$-sum) of the spaces $X_k$ is hypercyclic, weakly mixing, mixing, chaotic or frequently hypercyclic. We also compare the dynamical properties of $T$ and of the corresponding shift operator $B_T$. Finally, we interpret some classical criteria in Linear Dynamics in terms of the dynamical properties of a shift operator.

Orthogonality of invariant measures for weighted shifts

We introduce and study the notion of orthogonality for two operators in the context of weighted backward shifts on $\ell_p(\mathbb{Z}_+)$, $1\leq p<\infty$. Two continuous linear operators $T_1$ and $T_2$ acting on a Polish topological vector space $X$ are said to be orthogonal if any two Borel probability measures $m_1$ and $m_2$ on $X$ which are respectively $T_1$-$\,$invariant and $T_2$-$\,$invariant and satisfy $m_1(\{0\})=m_2(\{0\})=0$ must be orthogonal. In this note, we provide several conditions on the weights $\pmb u$ and $\pmb v$ implying orthogonality or non-orthogonality of the associated weighted shifts $B_{\pmb u}$ and $B_{\pmb v}$, and we investigate in some detail the case where the invariant measures are product measures.

Two remarks on the set of recurrent vectors

We solve in the negative two open problems, related to the linear and topological structure of the set of recurrent vectors, asked by Sophie Grivaux, Alfred Peris and the first author of this paper. Firstly, we show that there exist recurrent operators whose set of recurrent vectors is not dense lineable; and secondly, we construct operators which are reiteratively recurrent and cyclic, but whose set of reiteratively recurrent vectors is meager.

Structure of sets of bounded sequences with a prescribed number of accumulation points

For each vector $x\in \ell^{\infty}$, we can define the non-empty compact set $L_x$ of accumulation points of $x$. Given an infinite subset $A$ of $\mathbb{N}\backslash\{1\}$, we can therefore investigate under which conditions on $A$, the set $L(A):=\{x\in \ell^\infty: |L_x|\in A\}$ is lineable or even densely lineable. In particular, we show that if $L(A)$ is lineable then there exists $k\ge 1$ such that $A\cap (A-k)$ is infinite and that if $L(A)$ is densely lineable then $A\cap (A-1)$ is infinite. We end up by answering an open question on the existence of a closed non-separable subspace in which each non-zero vector has countably many accumulation points.

Generic properties of l_p-contractions and similar operator topologies

If $X$ is a separable reflexive Banach space, there are several natural Polish topologies on $\mathcal{B}(X)$, the set of contraction operators on $X$ (none of which being clearly ``more natural'' than the others), and hence several a priori different notions of genericity -- in the Baire category sense -- for properties of contraction operators. So it makes sense to investigate to which extent the generic properties, i.e. the comeager sets, really depend on the chosen topology on $\mathcal{B}(X)$. In this paper, we focus on $\ell_p\,$-$\,$spaces, $1<p\neq 2<\infty$. We show that for some pairs of natural Polish topologies on $\mathcal B_1(\ell_p)$, the comeager sets are in fact the same; and our main result asserts that for $p=3$ or $3/2$ and in the real case, all topologies on $\mathcal B_1(\ell_p)$ lying between the Weak Operator Topology and the Strong$^*$ Operator Topology share the same comeager sets. Our study relies on the consideration of continuity points of the identity map for two different topologies on $\mathcal{B}_1 (\ell_p)$. The other essential ingredient in the proof of our main result is a careful examination of norming vectors for finite-dimensional contractions of a special type.

Disjoint frequently hypercyclic pseudo-shifts

We obtain a Disjoint Frequent Hypercyclicity Criterion and show that it characterizes disjoint frequent hypercyclicity for a family of unilateral pseudo-shifts on $c_0(\mathbb{N})$ and $\ell^p(\mathbb{N})$, $1\le p <\infty$. As an application, we characterize disjoint frequently hypercyclic weighted shifts. We give analogous results for the weaker notions of disjoint upper frequent and reiterative hypercyclicity. Finally, we provide counterexamples showing that, although the frequent hypercyclicity, upper frequent hypercyclicity, and reiterative hypercyclicity coincide for weighted shifts on $\ell^p(\mathbb{N})$, this equivalence fails for disjoint versions of these notions.

Common hypercyclic vectors and dimension of the parameter set

We investigate the existence of a common hypercyclic vector for a family $(T_\lambda)_{\lambda\in \Lambda}$ of hypercyclicoperators acting on the same Banach space $X$. We give positive and negative results involving the dimension of $\Lambda$ and the regularity of each map $\lambda\in \Lambda\mapsto T_\lambda^n x$, $x\in X$, $n\in\mathbb N$.

Does a typical $\ell_p\,$-$\,$space contraction have a non-trivial invariant subspace?

Given a Polish topology $\tau$ on ${{\mathcal{B}}_{1}(X)}$, the set of all contraction operators on $X=\ell_p$, $1\le p<\infty$ or $X=c_0$, we prove several results related to the following question: does a typical $T\in {{\mathcal{B}}_{1}(X)}$ in the Baire Category sense has a non-trivial invariant subspace? In other words, is there a dense $G_\delta$ set $\mathcal G\subseteq ({{\mathcal{B}}_{1}(X)},\tau)$ such that every $T\in\mathcal G$ has a non-trivial invariant subspace? We mostly focus on the Strong Operator Topology and the Strong$^*$ Operator Topology.

Invariant subspaces for Fr\'echet spaces without continuous norm

Let $(X,(p_j))$ be a Fr\'echet space with a Schauder basis and without continuous norm, where $(p_j)$ is an increasing sequence of seminorms inducing the topology of $X$. We show that $X$ satisfies the Invariant Subspace Property if and only if there exists $j_0\ge 1$ such that $\ker p_{j+1}$ is of finite codimension in $\ker p_{j}$ for every $j\ge j_0$.

Chaos and frequent hypercyclicity for weighted shifts

Bayart and Ruzsa [Ergodic Theory Dynam. Systems 35 (2015)] have recently shown that every frequently hypercyclic weighted shift on $\ell^p$ is chaotic. This contrasts with an earlier result of Bayart and Grivaux [Proc. London Math. Soc. (3) 94 (2007)] who constructed a non-chaotic frequently hypercyclic weighted shift on $c_0$. We first generalize the Bayart-Ruzsa theorem to all Banach sequence spaces in which the unit sequences are a boundedly complete unconditional basis. We then study the relationship between frequent hypercyclicity and chaos for weighted shifts on Fr\'echet sequence spaces, in particular on K\"othe sequence spaces, and then on the special class of power series spaces. We obtain, rather curiously, that every frequently hypercyclic weighted shift on $H(\mathbb{D})$ is chaotic, while $H(\mathbb{C})$ admits a non-chaotic frequently hypercyclic weighted shift.

$\mathcal{U}$-Frequent hypercyclicity notions and related weighted densities

We study dynamical notions lying between $\mathcal{U}$-frequent hypercyclicity and reiterative hypercyclicity by investigating weighted upper densities between the unweighted upper density and the upper Banach density. While chaos implies reiterative hypercyclicity, we show that chaos does not imply $\mathcal{U}$-frequent hypercyclicity with respect to any weighted upper density. Moreover, we show that if $T$ is $\mathcal{U}$-frequently hypercyclic (resp. reiteratively hypercyclic) then the n-fold product of $T$ is still $\mathcal{U}$-frequently hypercyclic (resp. reiteratively hypercyclic) and that this implication is also satisfied for each of the considered $\mathcal{U}$-frequent hypercyclicity notions.

A bridge between U-frequent hypercyclicity and frequent hypercyclicity

Given $\mathcal{A}$ the family of weights $a=(a_n)_n$ decreasing to $0$ such that the series $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} a_n$ diverges, we show that the supremum on $\mathcal{A}$ of lower weighted densities coincides with the unweighted upper density and that the infimum on $\mathcal{A}$ of upper weighted densities coincides with the unweighted lower density. We then investigate the notions of $\mathcal{U}$-frequent hypercyclicity and frequent hypercyclicity associated to these weighted densities. We show that there exists an operator which is $\mathcal{U}$-frequently hypercyclic for each weight in $\mathcal{A}$ but not frequently hypercyclic, although the set of frequently hypercyclic vectors always coincides with the intersection of sets of $\mathcal{U}$-frequently hypercyclic vectors for each weight in $\mathcal{A}$.

Invariant subspaces for non-normable Fr\'echet spaces

A Fr\'echet space $X$ satisfies the Hereditary Invariant Subspace (resp. Subset) Property if for every closed infinite-dimensional subspace $M$ in $X$, each continuous operator on $M$ possesses a non-trivial invariant subspace (resp. subset). In this paper, we exhibit a family of non-normable separable infinite-dimensional Fr\'echet spaces satisfying the Hereditary Invariant Subspace Property and we show that many non-normable Fr\'echet spaces do not satisfy this property. We also state sufficient conditions for the existence of a continuous operator without non-trivial invariant subset and deduce among other examples that there exists a continuous operator without non-trivial invariant subset on the space of entire functions $H(\mathbb{C})$.

Strong transitivity properties for operators

Given a Furstenberg family $\mathscr{F}$ of subsets of $\mathbb{N}$, an operator $T$ on a topological vector space $X$ is called $\mathscr{F}$-transitive provided for each non-empty open subsets $U$, $V$ of $X$ the set $\{n\in \mathbb{Z}_+ : T^n(U)\cap V\neq\emptyset\}$ belongs to $\mathscr{F}$. We classify the topologically transitive operators with a hierarchy of $\mathscr{F}$-transitive subclasses by considering families $\mathscr{F}$ that are determined by various notions of largeness and density in $\mathbb{Z}_+$.

Linear dynamical systems on Hilbert spaces: typical properties and explicit examples

We solve a number of questions pertaining to the dynamics of linear operators on Hilbert spaces, sometimes by using Baire category arguments and sometimes by constructing explicit examples. In particular, we prove the following results. - A typical hypercyclic operator is not topologically mixing, has no eigenvalues and admits no non-trivial invariant measure, but is densely distributionally chaotic. - A typical upper-triangular operator is ergodic in the Gaussian sense, whereas a typical operator of the form "diagonal plus backward unilateral weighted shift" is ergodic but has only countably many unimodular eigenvalues, in particular, it is ergodic but not ergodic in the Gaussian sense. - There exist Hilbert space operators which are chaotic and $\mathcal U$-frequently hypercyclic but not frequently hypercyclic, Hilbert space operators which are chaotic and frequently hypercyclic but not ergodic, and Hilbert space operators which are chaotic and topologically mixing but not $\mathcal U$-frequently hypercyclic. We complement our results by investigating the descriptive complexity of some natural classes of operators defined by dynamical properties.
