Fast frequency-domain phenomenological modeling of eccentric aligned-spin binary black holes

We present the IMRPhenomXE frequency-domain phenomenological waveform model for the dominant mode of inspiral-merger-ringdown non-precessing binary black holes in elliptical orbits. IMRPhenomXE extends the quasi-circular IMRPhenomXAS waveform model for the dominant $(\ell, |m|) =$ (2,2) modes to eccentric binaries. For the inspiral part, orbit-averaged equations of motion within the quasi-Keplerian parametrization up to third post-Newtonian order, including spin effects, are evolved, and the waveform modes are computed using the stationary phase approximation on eccentricity expanded expressions up to $\mathcal{O}(e^{12})$. The model assumes circularization at merger-ringdown, where it adopts the underlying quasicircular IMRPhenomXAS baseline. We show that IMRPhenomXE reduces to the accurate IMPhenomXAS model in the quasi-circular limit. Compared against 186 public numerical relativity waveforms from the Simulating eXtreme Spacetimes catalog with initial eccentricities up to $~0.8$, IMRPhenomXE provides values of unfaithfulness below $3\%$ for $72\%$ of simulations with initial eccentricities below 0.4. For larger eccentricities, the unfaithfulness degrades up to $\gtrsim 10\%$ due to the underlying small eccentricity expansions and additional modelling approximations. In terms of speed, IMRPhenomXE outperforms any of the existing inspiral-merger-ringdown eccentric waveform models. We demonstrate the efficiency, robustness, and modularity of IMRPhenomXE through injections into zero noise and parameter-estimation analyses of gravitational-wave events, showing that IMRPhenomXE is a ready-to-use waveform model for gravitational-wave astronomy in the era of rapidly growing event catalogs.

Adiabatic tides in compact binaries on quasi-elliptic orbits: Radiation at the second-and-a-half relative post-Newtonian order

We compute the gravitational fluxes and waveform for eccentric compact binaries including matter effects through adiabatic tidal interactions within the post-Newtonian approximation. The computations are performed at the relative 2.5PN order. Using the dynamics derived in the companion paper, we first derive the radiated energy and angular momentum, from which we deduce the equations describing the secular evolution of the orbital elements. We numerically solve for the secular dynamics for various systems. We find that the eccentric corrections to tidal terms induce a dephasing that could potentially be detectable in some regions of the parameter space of gravitational wave sources. Finally, we compute the amplitude of the strain, decomposed in spin-weighted spherical harmonics. Besides the memory contributions that are left for future works, we provide the amplitude modes containing the instantaneous, tail and post-adiabatic corrections expanded to the twelfth order in eccentricity. All relevant results are provided in an ancillary file.

Adiabatic tides in compact binaries on quasi-elliptic orbits: Dynamics at the second-and-a-half relative post-Newtonian order

GW200105 is the first gravitational wave detection to show signs of eccentricity, it also is a neutron star - blackhole binary. This raises the need for waveforms that incorporate tidal effects on quasi-elliptic orbits. We tackle the problem of finite size effects within the post-Newtonian framework, including the mass-type quadrupole and octupole, as well as the current-type quadrupole deformations in the adiabatic approximation. The computations are performed at the second-and-a-half relative post-Newtonian order. We first derive the quasi-Keplerian parametrization of the conservative motion; we then express the radial separation and phase with their time derivatives in terms of the orbital frequency, the time eccentricity and the eccentric anomaly. To obtain these as functions of time, we invert the generalized Kepler equation while also discussing the convergence of eccentricity expanded results. We provide those results to the fourteenth order in eccentricity. Finally, we exploit the already known radiation reaction term of the acceleration in order to derive the secular and oscillatory evolutions of the orbital elements. The companion paper contains the derivation of the radiated fluxes and the amplitude modes of the strain. All relevant results are provided in an ancillary file.

Tidal contributions to the full gravitational waveform to the second-and-a-half post-Newtonian order

This paper describes the different steps to include the adiabatic tidal effects to the gravitational waveform amplitude for quasi-circular non-spinning compact binaries up to the second-and-a-half post-Newtonian (PN) order. The amplitude, that relates the two gravitational wave polarizations, is decomposed onto the basis of spin-weighted spherical harmonics of spin -2, parametrized by the two numbers $(\ell,m)$, where the modes of the waveform correspond to the coefficients of the decomposition. These modes are readily computed from the radiative multipole moments. They can be expressed in a PN-expanded form as well as in a factorized form, suitable to be directly included in effective-one-body models to describe more accurately the waveform of binary neutron stars. We also provide the energy flux and phasing evolution in time and frequency domain. The results presented in this article are collected in an ancillary file.

ESIGMAHM: An Eccentric, Spinning inspiral-merger-ringdown waveform model with Higher Modes for the detection and characterization of binary black holes

We present a time-domain inspiral-merger-ringdowm (IMR) waveform model ESIGMAHM constructed within a framework we named ESIGMA for coalescing binaries of spinning black holes on moderately eccentric orbits (Huerta et al. (2018) [Phys. Rev. D 97, 024031]). We now include the effect of black hole spins on the dynamics of eccentric binaries, as well as model sub-dominant waveform harmonics emitted by them. The inspiral evolution is described by a consistent combination of latest results from post-Newtonian theory, self-force, and black hole perturbation theory. We assume that these moderately eccentric binaries radiate away most of their orbital eccentricity before merger, and seamlessly connect the eccentric inspiral with a numerical relativity based surrogate waveform model for mergers of spinning binaries on quasi-circular orbits. We validate ESIGMAHM against eccentric Numerical Relativity simulations, and also against contemporary effective-one-body and phenomenological models in the quasi-circular limit. We find that ESIGMAHM achieves match values greater than $99\%$ for quasi-circular spin-aligned binaries with mass ratios up to $8$, and above $97\%$ for non-spinning and spinning eccentric systems with small or positively aligned spins. Using IMRESIGMA, we quantify the impact of orbital eccentricity on GW signals, showing that next-generation detectors can detect eccentric sources up to $10\%$ louder than quasi-circular ones. We also show that current templated LIGO-Virgo searches will lose more than $10\%$ of optimal SNR for about $20\%$ of all eccentric sources by using only quasi-circular waveform templates. The same will result in a $25\%$ loss in detection rate for eccentric sources with mass ratios $m_1/m_2\geq 4$. Our results highlight the need for including eccentricity and higher-order modes in GW source models and searches for asymmetric eccentric BBH signals.

Comparison of 4.5PN and 2SF gravitational energy fluxes from quasicircular compact binaries

Recent years have seen significant advances in models of gravitational waveforms emitted by quasicircular compact binaries in two regimes: the weak-field, post-Newtonian regime, in which the gravitational wave energy flux has now been calculated to fourth-and-a-half post-Newtonian order (4.5PN) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 131}, 121402 (2023)]; and the small-mass-ratio, gravitational self-force regime, in which the flux has now been calculated to second perturbative order in the mass ratio (2SF) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 151102 (2021)]. We compare these results and find agreement, showing consistency between the two (very distinct though both first-principle) perturbative calculations.

Electromagnetic fields in compact binaries: post-Newtonian wave generation and application to double white dwarfs systems

The aim of this work is twofold: (i) to properly define a wave-generation formalism for compact-supported sources embedded in Einstein-Maxwell theory, relying on matched post-Newtonian and multipolar-post-Minkowskian expansions; (ii) to apply this formalism (which is valid for any type of post-Newtonian sources) to the case of two stars with constant and aligned magnetic dipoles, by computing the fluxes of energy and angular momentum to the next-to-leading order, as well as the gravitational amplitude modes. Assuming eccentric orbits, we derive the evolution of orbital parameters, as well as the observables of the system, notably the gravitational phase for quasi-circular orbits. Finally, we give some numerical estimates for the contribution of the magnetic dipoles for some realistic systems.

Spin effects in gravitational waveforms and fluxes for binaries on eccentric orbits to the third post-Newtonian order

Compact binaries can have non-negligible orbital eccentricities in the frequency band of ground-based gravitational-wave detectors, depending on their astrophysical formation channels. To accurately determine the parameters of such systems, waveform models need to incorporate eccentricity effects. In this paper, we consider an eccentric binary of spinning nonprecessing compact objects, and derive the energy and angular momentum fluxes at infinity, as well as the gravitational waveform modes to the third post-Newtonian order. The novel results of this paper include the next-to-leading order instantaneous spin-orbit and spin-spin contributions to the waveform modes, in addition to the hereditary (tail and memory) contributions to the modes and fluxes for eccentric orbits. The instantaneous contributions are derived for generic motion, while the hereditary contributions are computed in a small-eccentricity expansion, but we consider a resummation that makes them valid for large eccentricities. We employ a quasi-Keplerian parametrization of the motion using harmonic coordinates and the covariant spin-supplementary condition, which complements some results in the literature in other coordinates. Our results can be useful in improving the accuracy of waveform models for spinning binaries on eccentric orbits.

Conservative (failed)-tail effects at the fifth post-Newtonian order

This work deals with the tail and ``failed'' tail sectors of the conservative dynamics for compact binary systems at the 5PN order. We employ the Fokker Lagrangian method with dimensional regularization, and our results for the tail sector are perfectly consistent with the previous EFT computations. As for the ``failed'' tail sector, we have good hopes that this new computation will help solving the current discrepancy in the literature.

Gravitational Wave Flux and Quadrupole Modes from Quasi-Circular Non-Spinning Compact Binaries to the Fourth Post-Newtonian Order

This article provides the details on the technical derivation of the gravitational waveform and total gravitational-wave energy flux of non-spinning compact binary systems to the 4PN (fourth post-Newtonian) order beyond the Einstein quadrupole formula. In particular: (i) we overview the link between the radiative multipole moments measured at infinity and the source moments in the framework of dimensional regularization; (ii) we compute special corrections to the source moments due to "infrared" commutators arising at the 4PN order; (iii) we derive a "post-adiabatic" correction needed to evaluate the tail integral with 2.5PN relative precision; (iv) we discuss the relation between the binary's orbital frequency in quasi-circular orbit and the gravitational-wave frequency measured at infinity; (v) we compute the hereditary effects at the 4PN order, including those coming from the recently derived tails-of-memory; and (vi) we describe the various tests we have performed to ensure the correctness of the results. Those results are collected in an ancillary file.

Gravitational-Wave Phasing of Quasi-Circular Compact Binary Systems to the Fourth-and-a-Half post-Newtonian Order

The inspiral phase of gravitational waves emitted by spinless compact binary systems is derived through the fourth-and-a-half post-Newtonian (4.5PN) order beyond quadrupole radiation, and the leading amplitude mode ($\ell$, m) = (2, 2) is obtained at 4PN order. We also provide the radiated flux, as well as the phase in the stationary phase approximation. Rough numerical estimates for the contribution of each PN order are provided for typical systems observed by current and future gravitational wave detectors.

Electromagnetic fields in compact binaries: a post-Newtonian approach

Galactic binaries, and notably double white dwarfs systems, will be a prominent source for the future LISA and Einstein Telescope detectors. Contrarily to the black holes observed by the current LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA network, such objects bear intense magnetic fields, that are naturally expected to leave some imprints on the gravitational wave emission. The purpose of this work is thus to study those imprints within the post-Newtonian (PN) framework, particularly adapted to double white dwarfs systems. To this end, we construct an effective action that takes into account the whole electromagnetic structure of a star, and then specify it to dipolar order. With this action at hand, we compute the acceleration and Noetherian quantities for generic electric and magnetic dipoles, at a relative 2PN order. Finally, focusing on physically relevant systems, we show that the magnetic effects on the orbital frequency, energy and angular momentum is significant, confirming previous works conclusions.

Complete gravitational-waveform amplitude modes for quasi-circular compact binaries to the 3.5PN order

We complete the computation of the gravitational waveform amplitude for non-spinning compact binaries to the third and a half post-Newtonian (PN) order in the quasi-circular case. This is done by performing a spin-weighted spherical harmonics decomposition of the amplitude. This computation is achieved using the post-Newtonian-Multipolar-post-Minkowskian formalism. The amplitude modes are written in a PN expanded way as well as a factorized form suitable for EOB template building. Combining this work with previous ones, we provide in the supplemental materials the expressions of the modes including all non-spinning and spinning effects to the 3.5PN order for non-precessing quasi-circular binaries.

Spin contributions to the gravitational-waveform modes for spin-aligned binaries at the 3.5PN order

We complete the post-Newtonian (PN) prediction at the 3.5PN order for the spin contributions to the gravitational waveforms emitted by inspiraling compact binaries, in the case of quasi-circular, equatorial orbits, where both spins are aligned with the orbital angular momentum. Using results from the multipolar post-Minkowskian wave generation formalism, we extend previous works that derived the dynamics and gravitational-wave energy flux and phasing, by computing the full waveform decomposed in spin-weighted spherical harmonics. This new calculation requires the computation of multipolar moments of higher multipolar order, new quadratic-in-spin contributions to the hereditary tail terms entering at the 3.5PN order, as well as other non-linear interactions between moments. When specialized to the test-mass limit, our results are equivalent to those obtained in the literature for the waveform emitted by a test-mass in equatorial, circular orbits around a Kerr black hole. We also compute the factorized modes for use in effective-one-body waveform models, correcting the 2.5PN nonspinning and 3PN quadratic-in-spin terms in the (2,1) mode used in current models.

The Quadrupole Moment of Compact Binaries to the Fourth post-Newtonian Order: I. Non-Locality in Time and Infra-Red Divergencies

With the aim of providing high accuracy post-Newtonian (PN) templates for the analysis of gravitational waves generated by compact binary systems, we complete the analytical derivation of the source type mass quadrupole moment of compact binaries (without spins) at the fourth PN order of general relativity. Similarly to the case of the conservative 4PN equations of motion, we show that the quadrupole moment at that order contains a non-local (in time) contribution, arising from the tail-transported interaction entering the conservative part of the dynamics. Furthermore, we investigate the infra-red (IR) divergences of the quadrupole moment. In a previous work, this moment has been computed using a Hadamard partie finie procedure for the IR divergences, but the knowledge of the conservative equations of motion indicates that those divergences have to be dealt with by means of dimensional regularization. This work thus derives the difference between the two regularization schemes, which has to be added on top of the previous result. We show that unphysical IR poles start to appear at the 3PN order, and we determine all of these up to the 4PN order. In particular, the non-local tail term comes in along with a specific pole at the 4PN order. It will be proven in a companion paper that the poles in the source-type quadrupole are cancelled in the physical radiative type quadrupole moment measured at future null infinity.

The Quadrupole Moment of Compact Binaries to the Fourth post-Newtonian Order: II. Dimensional Regularization and Renormalization

The regularization and renormalization of the radiative mass-type quadrupole moment of inspiralling compact binaries (without spins) is investigated at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity. As clear from the conservative 4PN equations of motion, a dimensional regularization has to be implemented in order to properly treat the non-linear interactions experienced by gravitational waves during their propagation toward future null infinity. By implementing such procedure, we show that the poles coming from the source moment (computed in a companion paper) are exactly cancelled in the radiative moment, as expected for a physical quantity. We thus define and obtain a "renormalized" source quadrupole, three-dimensional by nature, which is an important step towards the computation of the gravitational-wave flux with 4PN accuracy. Furthermore, we explicitly prove the equivalence between the dimensional regularization and the previously used Hadamard partie finie scheme up to the 3PN order.

The current-type quadrupole moment and gravitational-wave mode $(\ell,m)=(2,1)$ of compact binary systems at the third post-Newtonian order

Up to the third post-Newtonian (3PN) order, we compute (i) the current-type quadrupole moment of (non-spinning) compact binary systems, as well as (ii) the corresponding gravitational-wave mode $(2,1)$ (constituting a 3.5PN correction in the waveform). Moreover, at this occasion, (iii) we recompute and confirm the previous calculation of the mass-type octupole moment to 3PN order. The ultra-violet (UV) divergences due to the point-like nature of the source are treated by means of dimensional regularization. This entails generalizing the definition of the irreducible mass and current multipole moments of an isolated PN source in $d$ spatial dimensions. In particular, we find that the current type moment has the symmetry of a particular mixed Young tableau and that, in addition, there appears a third type of moment which is however inexistent in 3 spatial dimensions.

Hamiltonian for tidal interactions in compact binary systems to next-to-next-to-leading post-Newtonian order

In previous works, we obtained the leading, next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading (NNL) post-Newtonian (PN) corrections in the conservative tidal interactions between two compact non-spinning objects using a Lagrangian of effective field theory (EFT) in harmonic coordinates. In the present paper, we compute the corresponding NNL PN tidal effective Hamiltonian in ADM-like and isotropic coordinates, with contributions from mass quadrupole, current quadrupole and mass octupole tidal interactions, consistently included at that level. We also derive the NNL tidal Hamiltonian in Delaunay variables. We find full agreement in the overlap with recent results that were derived using tools from scattering amplitudes and the EFT to second post-Minkowskian (PM) order.
