Finite isoresidual covers in strata of $k$-differentials

Consider the strata of primitive $k$-differentials on the Riemann sphere whose singularities, except for two, are poles of order divisible by $k$. The map that assigns to each $k$-differential the $k$-residues at these poles is a ramified cover of its image. Generalizing results known in the case of abelian differentials, we describe the ramification locus of this cover and provide a formula, involving the $k$-factorial function, for the cardinality of each fiber. We prove this formula using intersection calculations on the multi-scale compactification of the strata of $k$-differentials. In special cases, we also give alternative proofs using flat geometry. Finally, we present an application to cone spherical metrics with dihedral monodromy.

Isoresidual curves

Given a partition $\mu$ of $-2$, the stratum $\mathcal{H}(\mu)$ parametrizes meromorphic differential one-forms on the Riemann sphere $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$ with~$n$ zeros and $p$ poles of orders prescribed by $\mu$. The isoresidual fibration is defined by assigning to each differential in $\mathcal{H}(\mu)$ its configuration of residues at the poles. In the case of differentials with $n=2$ zeros, generic isoresidual fibers are complex curves endowed with a canonical translation structure, which we describe extensively in this paper. Quantitative characteristics of the translation structure on isoresidual fiber curves, including the orders of the singularities and a period central charge encapsulating the linear dependence of periods on the underlying configuration of residues, provide rich discrete invariants for these fibers. We also determine the Euler characteristic of generic isoresidual fiber curves from intersection-theoretic computations, relying on the multi-scale compactification of strata of differentials. In particular, we describe a wall and chamber structure for the Euler characteristic of generic isoresidual fiber curves in terms of the partition $\mu$. Additionally, we classify the connected components of generic isoresidual fibers for strata in genus zero with an arbitrary number of zeros.

The space of solvable Pell-Abel equations

Pell-Abel equation is a functional equation of the form P^{2}-DQ^{2} = 1, with a given polynomial D free of squares and unknown polynomials P and Q. We show that the space of Pell-Abel equations with the fixed degrees of D and of a primitive solution P is a complex manifold. We describe its connected components by an efficiently computable invariant. Moreover, we give various applications of this result, including torsion pairs on hyperelliptic curves, Hurwitz spaces and the description of the connected components of the space of primitive k-differentials with a unique zero on genus 2 Riemann surfaces.

K-differentials with prescribed singularities

We study the local invariants that a meromorphic $k$-differential on a Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 0$ can have for $k \geq 3$. These local invariants include the orders of zeros and poles, as well as the $k$-residues at the poles. We show that for a given pattern of orders of zeros, there exists, with a few exceptions, a primitive holomorphic $k$-differential having zeros of these orders. In the meromorphic case, for genus $g \geq 1$, every expected tuple appears as a configuration of $k$-residues. On the other hand, for certain strata in genus zero, finitely many tuples (up to simultaneous scaling) do not occur as configurations of $k$-residues for a $k$-differential.

Dihedral monodromy of cone spherical metrics

Among metrics of constant positive curvature on a punctured compact Riemann surface with conical singularities at the punctures, dihedral monodromy means that the action of the monodromy group globally preserves a pair of antipodal points. Using recent results about local invariants of quadratic differentials, we give a complete characterization of the set of conical angles realized by some cone spherical metric with dihedral monodromy.

Quadratic differentials with prescribed singularities

The local invariants of a meromorphic quadratic differential on a compact Riemann surface are the orders of zeros and poles, and the residues at the poles of even orders. The main result of this paper is that with few exceptions, every pattern of local invariants can be obtained by a quadratic differential on some Riemann surface. The exceptions are completely classified and only occur in genera zero and one. Moreover, in the case of a nonconnected stratum, we show that, with three exceptions in genus one, every invariants can be realized in each connected component of the stratum. These results are obtained using the flat metric induced by the differentials. We give an application by bounding the number of disjoint cylinders on a primitive quadratic differential.

Abelian differentials with prescribed singularities

The local invariants of a meromorphic Abelian differential on a Riemann surface of genus $g$ are the orders of zeros and poles, and the residues at the poles. The main result of this paper is that with few exceptions, every pattern of orders and residues can be obtain by an Abelian differential. These exceptions are two families in genus zero when the orders of the poles are either all simple or all nonsimple. Moreover, we even show that the pattern can be realized in each connected component of strata. Finally we give consequences of these results in algebraic and flat geometry. The main ingredient of the proof is the flat representation of the Abelian differentials.

Towards a classification of connected components of the strata of $k$-differentials

A $k$-differential on a Riemann surface is a section of the $k$-th power of the canonical bundle. Loci of $k$-differentials with prescribed number and multiplicities of zeros and poles form a natural stratification for the moduli space of $k$-differentials. The classification of connected components of the strata of $k$-differentials was known for holomorphic differentials, meromorphic differentials and quadratic differentials with at worst simple poles by Kontsevich--Zorich, Boissy and Lanneau, respectively. Built on their work we develop new techniques to study connected components of the strata of $k$-differentials for general $k$. As an application, we give a complete classification of connected components of the strata of quadratic differentials with arbitrary poles. Moreover, we distinguish certain components of the strata of $k$-differentials by generalizing the hyperelliptic structure and spin parity for higher $k$. We also describe an approach to determine explicitly parities of $k$-differentials in genus zero and one, which inspires an amusing conjecture in number theory. A key viewpoint we use is the notion of multi-scale $k$-differentials introduced by Bainbridge--Chen--Gendron--Grushevsky--M\"oller for $k = 1$ and extended by Costantini--M\"oller--Zachhuber for all $k$.

\'Equation de Pell-Abel et applications

In this paper, we show that there are solutions of every degree $r$ of the equation of Pell-Abel on some real hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ if and only if $ r > g$. This result, which is known to the experts, has consequences, which seem to be unknown to the experts. First, we deduce the existence of a primitive $k$-differential on an hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ with a unique zero of order $k(2g-2)$ for every $(k,g)\neq(2,2)$. Moreover, we show that there exists a non Weierstrass point of order $n$ modulo a Weierstrass point on a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ if and only if $n > 2g$.

Isoresidual fibration and resonance arrangements

The stratum $\mathcal{H}(a,-b_{1},\dots,-b_{p})$ of meromorphic $1$-forms with a zero of order $a$ and poles of orders $b_{1},\dots,b_{p}$ on the Riemann sphere has a map, the isoresidual fibration, defined by assigning to any differential its residues at the poles. We show that above the complement of a hyperplane arrangement, the resonance arrangement, the isoresidual fibration is an unramified cover of degree $\frac{a!}{(a+2-p)!}$. Moreover, the monodromy of the fibration is computed for strata with at most three poles and a system of generators and relations is given for all strata. These results are obtained by associating to special differentials of the strata a tree, and by studying the relationship between the geometric properties of the differentials and the combinatorial properties of these trees.

On the locus of genus $3$ curves that admit meromorphic differentials with a zero of order $6$ and a pole of order $2$

The main goal of this article is to compute the class of the divisor of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_3$ obtained by taking the closure of the image of $\Omega\mathcal{M}_3(6;-2)$ by the forgetful map. This is done using Porteous formula and the theory of test curves. For this purpose, we study the locus of meromorphic differentials of the second kind, computing the dimension of the map of these loci to $\mathcal{M}_g$ and solving some enumerative problems involving such differentials in low genus. A key tool of the proof is the compactification of strata recently introduced by Bainbridge-Chen-Gendron-Grushevsky-M\"oller.

The moduli space of multi-scale differentials

We construct a compactification of the moduli spaces of abelian differentials on Riemann surfaces with prescribed zeroes and poles. This compactification, called the moduli space of multi-scale differentials, is a complex orbifold with normal crossing boundary. Locally, our compactification can be described as the normalization of an explicit blowup of the incidence variety compactification, which was defined in [BCGGM18] as the closure of the stratum of abelian differentials in the closure of the Hodge bundle. We also define families of projectivized multi-scale differentials, which gives a proper Deligne-Mumford stack, and our compactification is the orbifold corresponding to it. Moreover, we perform a real oriented blowup of the unprojectivized moduli space of multi-scale differentials such that the $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb R)$-action in the interior of the moduli space extends continuously to the boundary.

Diff\'erentielles \`a singularit\'es prescrites

We study the local invariants that a meromorphic $k$-differential on a Riemann surface of genus $g\geq0$ can have. These local invariants are the orders of zeros and poles, and the $k$-residues at the poles. We show that for a given pattern of orders of zeroes, there exists, up to a few exceptions, a primitive $k$-differential having these orders of zero. The same is true for meromorphic $k$-differentials and in this case, we describe the tuples of complex numbers that can appear as $k$-residues at their poles. For genus $g\geq2$, it turns out that every expected tuple appears as $k$-residues. On the other hand, some expected tuples are not the $k$-residues of a $k$-differential in some remaining strata. This happens in the quadratic case in genus $1$ and in genus zero for every $k$. We also give consequences of these results in algebraic and flat geometry.

Strata of $k$-differentials

A $k$-differential on a Riemann surface is a section of the $k$-th power of the canonical line bundle. Loci of $k$-differentials with prescribed number and multiplicities of zeros and poles form a natural stratification of the moduli space of $k$-differentials. In this paper we give a complete description for the compactification of the strata of $k$-differentials in terms of pointed stable $k$-differentials, for all $k$. The upshot is a global $k$-residue condition that can also be reformulated in terms of admissible covers of stable curves. Moreover, we study properties of $k$-differentials regarding their deformations, residues, and flat geometric structure.

Compactification of strata of abelian differentials

We describe the closure of the strata of abelian differentials with prescribed type of zeros and poles, in the projectivized Hodge bundle over the Deligne-Mumford moduli space of stable curves with marked points. We provide an explicit characterization of pointed stable differentials in the boundary of the closure, both a complex analytic proof and a flat geometric proof for smoothing the boundary differentials, and numerous examples. The main new ingredient in our description is a global residue condition arising from a full order on the dual graph of a stable curve.

The Deligne-Mumford and the Incidence Variety Compactifications of the Strata of $\Omega\mathcal{M}_{g}$

The main goal of this work is to construct and study a reasonable compactification of the strata of the moduli space of Abelian differentials. This allows us to compute the Kodaira dimension of some strata of the moduli space of Abelian differentials. The main ingredients to study the compactifications of the strata are a version of the plumbing cylinder construction for differential forms and an extension of the parity of the connected components of the strata to the differentials on curves of compact type. We study in detail the compactifications of the hyperelliptic minimal strata and of the odd minimal stratum in genus three.
