Exothermic isospin-violating dark matter after SuperCDMS and CDEX

We show that exothermic isospin-violating dark matter (IVDM) can make the results of the latest CDMS-Si experiment consistent with recent null experiments, such as XENON10, XENON100, LUX, CDEX, and SuperCDMS, whereas for the CoGeNT experiment, a strong tension still persists. For CDMS-Si, separate exothermic dark matter or isospin-violating dark matter cannot fully ameliorate the tensions among these experiments; the tension disappears only if exothermic scattering is combined with an isospin-violating effect of f_n/f_p=-0.7. For such exothermic IVDM to exist, at least a new vector gauge boson (dark photon or dark Z') that connects SM quarks to Majorana-type DM particles is required.

Computation of the O(p^6) order low-energy constants: an update

We update our original low-energy constants to the O(p6) order, including two and three flavours, the normal and anomalous ones. Following a comparative analysis, the O(p4) results are considered better. In the O(p6) order, most of our results are consistent or better with those we have found in the literature, although several are worse.

Data-Driven Scene Understanding with Adaptively Retrieved Exemplars

This article investigates a data-driven approach for semantically scene understanding, without pixelwise annotation and classifier training. Our framework parses a target image with two steps: (i) retrieving its exemplars (i.e. references) from an image database, where all images are unsegmented but annotated with tags; (ii) recovering its pixel labels by propagating semantics from the references. We present a novel framework making the two steps mutually conditional and bootstrapped under the probabilistic Expectation-Maximization (EM) formulation. In the first step, the references are selected by jointly matching their appearances with the target as well as the semantics (i.e. the assigned labels of the target and the references). We process the second step via a combinatorial graphical representation, in which the vertices are superpixels extracted from the target and its selected references. Then we derive the potentials of assigning labels to one vertex of the target, which depend upon the graph edges that connect the vertex to its spatial neighbors of the target and to its similar vertices of the references. Besides, the proposed framework can be naturally applied to perform image annotation on new test images. In the experiments, we validate our approach on two public databases, and demonstrate superior performances over the state-of-the-art methods in both semantic segmentation and image annotation tasks.

Simple Toroidal Vertex Algebras and Their Irreducible Modules

In this paper, we continue the study on toroidal vertex algebras initiated in \cite{LTW}, to study concrete toroidal vertex algebras associated to toroidal Lie algebra $L_{r}(\hat{\frak{g}})=\hat{\frak{g}}\otimes L_r$, where $\hat{\frak{g}}$ is an untwisted affine Lie algebra and $L_r=$\mathbb{C}[t_{1}^{\pm 1},\ldots,t_{r}^{\pm 1}]$. We first construct an $(r+1)$-toroidal vertex algebra $V(T,0)$ and show that the category of restricted $L_{r}(\hat{\frak{g}})$-modules is canonically isomorphic to that of $V(T,0)$-modules.Let $c$ denote the standard central element of $\hat{\frak{g}}$ and set $S_c=U(L_r(\mathbb{C}c))$. We furthermore study a distinguished subalgebra of $V(T,0)$, denoted by $V(S_c,0)$. We show that (graded) simple quotient toroidal vertex algebras of $V(S_c,0)$ are parametrized by a $\mathbb{Z}^r$-graded ring homomorphism $ψ:S_c\rightarrow L_r$ such that Im$ψ$ is a $\mathbb{Z}^r$-graded simple $S_c$-module. Denote by $L(ψ,0}$ the simple $(r+1)$-toroidal vertex algebra of $V(S_c,0)$ associated to $ψ$. We determine for which $ψ$, $L(ψ,0)$ is an integrable $L_{r}(\hat{\frak{g}})$-module and we then classify irreducible $L(ψ,0)$-modules for such a $ψ$. For our need, we also obtain various general results.

A Survey on Device-to-Device Communication in Cellular Networks

Device-to-Device (D2D) communication was initially proposed in cellular networks as a new paradigm to enhance network performance. The emergence of new applications such as content distribution and location-aware advertisement introduced new use-cases for D2D communications in cellular networks. The initial studies showed that D2D communication has advantages such as increased spectral efficiency and reduced communication delay. However, this communication mode introduces complications in terms of interference control overhead and protocols that are still open research problems. The feasibility of D2D communications in LTE-A is being studied by academia, industry, and the standardization bodies. To date, there are more than 100 papers available on D2D communications in cellular networks and, there is no survey on this field. In this article, we provide a taxonomy based on the D2D communicating spectrum and review the available literature extensively under the proposed taxonomy. Moreover, we provide new insights to the over-explored and under-explored areas which lead us to identify open research problems of D2D communication in cellular networks.

Increasing Opportunistic Gain in Small Cells Through Energy-Aware User Cooperation

To meet the increasing demand for wireless capacity, future networks are likely to consist of dense layouts of small cells. The number of users in each cell is thus reduced which results in diminished gains from opportunistic scheduling, particularly under dynamic traffic loads. We propose an user-initiated base station (BS)-transparent traffic spreading approach that leverages user-user communication to increase BS scheduling flexibility. The proposed scheme can increase opportunistic gain and improve user performance. For a specified tradeoff between performance and power expenditure, we characterize the optimal policy by modeling the system as a Markov decision process and also present a heuristic algorithm that yields significant performance gains. Our simulations show that, in the performance-centric case, average file transfer delays are lowered by up to 20% even in homogeneous scenarios, and up to 50% with heterogeneous users. Further, we show that the bulk of the performance improvement can be achieved with a small increase in power expenditure, e.g., in an energy-sensitive case, up to 78% of the performance improvement can be typically achieved at only 20% of the power expenditure of the performance-centric case.

The Deterministic Time-Linearity of Service Provided by Fading Channels

In the paper, we study the service process $S(t)$ of an independent and identically distributed (\textit{i.i.d.}) Nakagami-$m$ fading channel, which is defined as the amount of service provided, i.e., the integral of the instantaneous channel capacity over time $t$. By using the Characteristic Function (CF) approach and the infinitely divisible law, it is proved that, other than certain generally recognized curve form {or a stochastic process}, the channel service process $S(t)$ is a deterministic linear function of time $t$, namely, $S(t)=c_m^\ast\cdot t$ where $c_m^\ast$ is a constant determined by the fading parameter $m$. Furthermore, we extend it to general \textit{i.i.d.} fading channels and present an explicit form of the constant service rate $c_p^\ast$. The obtained work provides such a new insight on the system design of joint source/channel coding that there exists a coding scheme such that a receiver can decode with zero error probability and zero high layer queuing delay, if the transmitter maintains a constant data rate no more than $c_p^\ast$. Finally, we verify our analysis through Monte Carlo simulations.

Forward-backward multiplicity correlations of target fragments in nucleus-emulsion collisions at a few hundred MeV/nucleon

The forward-backward multiplicity and correlations of target evaporated fragment(black track particle) and target recoiled proton(grey track particle) emitted in 150 A MeV He-emulsion, 290 A MeV C-emulsion, 400 A MeV C-emulsion, 400 A MeV Ne-emulsion and 500 A MeV Fe-emulsion interactions are investigated. It is found that the forward and backward averaged multiplicity of grey, black and heavily ionized track particle increase with the increase of target size. Averaged multiplicity of forward black track particle, backward black track particle, and backward grey track particle do not depend on the projectile size and energy, but the averaged multiplicity of forward grey track particle increases with increase of projectile size and energy. The backward grey track particle multiplicity distribution follows an exponential decay law and the decay constant decreases with increase of target size. The backward-forward multiplicity correlations follow linear law which is independent of the projectile size and energy, and the saturation effect is observed in some heavy target data sets.

Higgsphobic and fermiophobic Z' as a single dark matter candidate

A spin-1 Z' particle as a single dark matter candidate is investigated by assuming that it does not directly couple to the Higgs boson and standard model fermions and does not mix with the photon and Z boson. The remaining dominant vertices are quartic Z'Z'ZZ and Z'Z'W+W-, which can induce effective Z'Z'q\bar{q} couplings through standard-model gauge-boson loops. We discuss constraints from the cosmological thermal relic density, and direct and indirect-detection experiments, and find that a dark Z' can only exist above the W boson mass threshold, and the effective quartic coupling of Z'Z'VV is bounded in the region of 10^{-3}~10^{-2}.

Study of the material photon and electron background and the liquid argon detector veto efficiency of the CDEX-10 experiment

The China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX) is located at the China Jinping underground laboratory (CJPL) and aims to directly detect the WIMP flux with high sensitivity in the low mass region. Here we present a study of the predicted photon and electron backgrounds including the background contribution of the structure materials of the germanium detector, the passive shielding materials, and the intrinsic radioactivity of the liquid argon that serves as an anti-Compton active shielding detector. A detailed geometry is modeled and the background contribution has been simulated based on the measured radioactivities of all possible components within the GEANT4 program. Then the photon and electron background level in the energy region of interest (<10^-2 events kg-1 day-1 keV-1 (cpkkd)) is predicted based on Monte Carlo simulations. The simulated result is consistent with the design goal of CDEX-10 experiment, 0.1 cpkkd, which shows that the active and passive shield design of CDEX-10 is effective and feasible.

$q$-Virasoro algebra and vertex algebras

In this paper, we study a certain deformation $D$ of the Virasoro algebra that was introduced and called $q$-Virasoro algebra by Nigro,in the context of vertex algebras. Among the main results, we prove that for any complex number $\ell$, the category of restricted $D$-modules of level $\ell$ is canonically isomorphic to the category of quasi modules for a certain vertex algebra of affine type. We also prove that the category of restricted $D$-modules of level $\ell$ is canonically isomorphic to the category of $\mathbb{Z}$-equivariant $ϕ$-coordinated quasi modules for the same vertex algebra. In the process, we introduce and employ a certain infinite dimensional Lie algebra which is defined in terms of generators and relations and then identified explicitly with a subalgebra of $\mathfrak{gl}_{\infty}$.

Full pseudoscalar mesonic chiral Lagrangian at p6 order under the unitary group

We construct the full p6 order chiral Lagrangians for the unitary group and special unitary groups, including nf-, three- and two-flavor cases, all bilinear currents (scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, axial-vector and tensor currents) and theta parameter. The number of independent operators are 1391, 1326 and 969 for each of the flavor unitary groups. From these results, we find one extra linear relation among the traditional p4 order low-energy constants under the U(3) group, and some more linear relations with tensor sources for the p6 order low-energy constants in the special unitary groups. We develop a scheme to obtain the relations for the dependent operators in terms of independent operators.

Survival of New Physics: An Anomaly-free Neutral Gauge Boson at the LHC

An anomaly-free $U(1)'$ effective Lagrangian as the most common new physics beyond the standard model is proposed to survey the maximal parameter space constrained by electroweak precise measurements at the LEP and direct detection in dilepton decay channel at the LHC at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV. By the global fit of effective couplings of $Z$ boson to the SM fermions, $Δ_{11},Δ_{21},g_2Δ_{31}$ related to mixings and $r$ related to $U(1)'$ charge assignment are bounded. The allowed areas are plotted in the not only $r$-$g_2$ but also $m_{Z'}$-$g_2$ planes, which show that a sub-TeV $Z'$ is still permissible as long as the coupling $g_2\sim 0.01$. The results provides a prime requirement to an extra $U(1)'$ gauge boson and hinds the direction of possible new physics beyond the standard model. The possible signal in dilepton decay channel at LHC at $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV is also provided.

Twisted $Γ$-Lie algebras and their vertex operator representations

Let $Γ$ be a generic subgroup of the multiplicative group $\mathbb{C}^*$ of nonzero complex numbers. We define a class of Lie algebras associated to $Γ$, called twisted $Γ$-Lie algebras, which is a natural generalization of the twisted affine Lie algebras. Starting from an arbitrary even sublattice $Q$ of $\mathbb Z^N$ and an arbitrary finite order isometry of $\mathbb Z^N$ preserving $Q$, we construct a family of twisted $Γ$-vertex operators acting on generalized Fock spaces which afford irreducible representations for certain twisted $Γ$-Lie algebras. As application, this recovers a number of known vertex operator realizations for infinite dimensional Lie algebras, such as twisted affine Lie algebras, extended affine Lie algebras of type $A$, trigonometric Lie algebras of series $A$ and $B$, unitary Lie algebras, and $BC$-graded Lie algebras.

Computation of the $p^6$ order low-energy constants with tensor sources

We present the results of calculations of the $p^4$ and $p^6$ order low-energy constants for the chiral Lagrangian with tensor sources for both two and three flavors of pseudoscalar mesons. This is a generalization of our previous work on similar calculations without tensor sources in terms of the quark self-energy $Σ(p^2)$, based on the first principle derivation of the low-energy effective Lagrangian and computation of the low-energy constants with some rough approximations. With the help of partial integration and some epsilon relations, we find that some $p^6$ order operators with tensor sources appearing in the literature are related to each other. That leaves 98 independent terms for $n$-flavor, 92 terms for three-flavor, and 65 terms for two-flavor cases. We also find that the odd-intrinsic-parity chiral Lagrangian with tensor sources cannot independently exist in any order of low-energy expansion.

The CDEX-1 1 kg Point-Contact Germanium Detector for Low Mass Dark Matter Searches

The CDEX Collaboration has been established for direct detection of light dark matter particles, using ultra-low energy threshold p-type point-contact germanium detectors, in China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL). The first 1 kg point-contact germanium detector with a sub-keV energy threshold has been tested in a passive shielding system located in CJPL. The outputs from both the point-contact p+ electrode and the outside n+ electrode make it possible to scan the lower energy range of less than 1 keV and at the same time to detect the higher energy range up to 3 MeV. The outputs from both p+ and n+ electrode may also provide a more powerful method for signal discrimination for dark matter experiment. Some key parameters, including energy resolution, dead time, decay times of internal X-rays, and system stability, have been tested and measured. The results show that the 1 kg point-contact germanium detector, together with its shielding system and electronics, can run smoothly with good performances. This detector system will be deployed for dark matter search experiments.

Minimal Ward-Takahashi Vertices and Pion Light Cone Distribution Amplitudes from Gauge Invariant, Nonlocal, Dynamical Quark Model

The gauge-invariant, nonlocal, dynamical quark model is proved to generate the minimal vertices which satisfy the Ward-Takahashi identities. In the chiral limit, the momentum-dependent quark self-energy results in a flat-like form with some end point delta-funtions for the light-cone pion distribution amplitudes, similarly found in the Nambu Jona-Lasino model with constant constituent mass. The leading order nonzero pion and current quark masses corrections lead concave type asymptotic-like form modifications to twist-2 pion distribution amplitude with end point pillars and twist-3 tensor pion distribution amplitude above the flat-like form backgrounds. A by-product of our investigation shows that the variable u appearing in pion light-cone distribution amplitudes is just the standard Feynman parameter in the Feynman parameter integrals; also chiral perturbation works well for these amplitudes.
