DIPNet: Efficiency Distillation and Iterative Pruning for Image Super-Resolution

Efficient deep learning-based approaches have achieved remarkable performance in single image super-resolution. However, recent studies on efficient super-resolution have mainly focused on reducing the number of parameters and floating-point operations through various network designs. Although these methods can decrease the number of parameters and floating-point operations, they may not necessarily reduce actual running time. To address this issue, we propose a novel multi-stage lightweight network boosting method, which can enable lightweight networks to achieve outstanding performance. Specifically, we leverage enhanced high-resolution output as additional supervision to improve the learning ability of lightweight student networks. Upon convergence of the student network, we further simplify our network structure to a more lightweight level using reparameterization techniques and iterative network pruning. Meanwhile, we adopt an effective lightweight network training strategy that combines multi-anchor distillation and progressive learning, enabling the lightweight network to achieve outstanding performance. Ultimately, our proposed method achieves the fastest inference time among all participants in the NTIRE 2023 efficient super-resolution challenge while maintaining competitive super-resolution performance. Additionally, extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed components. The results show that our approach achieves comparable performance in representative dataset DIV2K, both qualitatively and quantitatively, with faster inference and fewer number of network parameters.

Photon Field Networks for Dynamic Real-Time Volumetric Global Illumination

Volume data is commonly found in many scientific disciplines, like medicine, physics, and biology. Experts rely on robust scientific visualization techniques to extract valuable insights from the data. Recent years have shown path tracing to be the preferred approach for volumetric rendering, given its high levels of realism. However, real-time volumetric path tracing often suffers from stochastic noise and long convergence times, limiting interactive exploration. In this paper, we present a novel method to enable real-time global illumination for volume data visualization. We develop Photon Field Networks -- a phase-function-aware, multi-light neural representation of indirect volumetric global illumination. The fields are trained on multi-phase photon caches that we compute a priori. Training can be done within seconds, after which the fields can be used in various rendering tasks. To showcase their potential, we develop a custom neural path tracer, with which our photon fields achieve interactive framerates even on large datasets. We conduct in-depth evaluations of the method's performance, including visual quality, stochastic noise, inference and rendering speeds, and accuracy regarding illumination and phase function awareness. Results are compared to ray marching, path tracing and photon mapping. Our findings show that Photon Field Networks can faithfully represent indirect global illumination across the phase spectrum while exhibiting less stochastic noise and rendering at a significantly faster rate than traditional methods.

HyperINR: A Fast and Predictive Hypernetwork for Implicit Neural Representations via Knowledge Distillation

Implicit Neural Representations (INRs) have recently exhibited immense potential in the field of scientific visualization for both data generation and visualization tasks. However, these representations often consist of large multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs), necessitating millions of operations for a single forward pass, consequently hindering interactive visual exploration. While reducing the size of the MLPs and employing efficient parametric encoding schemes can alleviate this issue, it compromises generalizability for unseen parameters, rendering it unsuitable for tasks such as temporal super-resolution. In this paper, we introduce HyperINR, a novel hypernetwork architecture capable of directly predicting the weights for a compact INR. By harnessing an ensemble of multiresolution hash encoding units in unison, the resulting INR attains state-of-the-art inference performance (up to 100x higher inference bandwidth) and can support interactive photo-realistic volume visualization. Additionally, by incorporating knowledge distillation, exceptional data and visualization generation quality is achieved, making our method valuable for real-time parameter exploration. We validate the effectiveness of the HyperINR architecture through a comprehensive ablation study. We showcase the versatility of HyperINR across three distinct scientific domains: novel view synthesis, temporal super-resolution of volume data, and volume rendering with dynamic global shadows. By simultaneously achieving efficiency and generalizability, HyperINR paves the way for applying INR in a wider array of scientific visualization applications.

No evidence of superconductivity in the compressed sample prepared from the lutetium foil and H2/N2 gas mixture

A material described as lutetium-hydrogen-nitrogen (Lu-H-N in short) was recently claimed to have near-ambient superconductivity[Gammon et al, Nature 615, 244, 2023]. If the results could be reproduced by other teams, it would be a major scientific breakthrough. Here, we report our results of transport and structure measurements on a material prepared using the same method as that reported by Gammon et al. Our X-ray diffraction measurements indicated that the obtained sample contained three substances: the FCC-1 phase (Fm-3m) with a lattice parameter a=5.03 Å, the FCC-2 phase (Fm-3m) with a lattice parameter a= 4.755 Å and Lu metal. These two FCC phases are identical to the those reported in the so-called near-ambient superconductor. However, we found that the samples had no evidence of superconductivity, through our resistance measurements in the temperature range of 300 - 4 K and pressure range of 0.9 - 3.4 GPa, and our magnetic susceptibility measurements in the pressure range of 0.8-3.3 GPa and temperature down to 100 K. We also used a laser heating technique to heat the sample to 1800°C and found no superconductivity in the produced dark blue samples below 6.5 GPa. In addition, the color of the both samples remain dark blue in the pressure range investigated.

Learning to Dub Movies via Hierarchical Prosody Models

Given a piece of text, a video clip and a reference audio, the movie dubbing (also known as visual voice clone V2C) task aims to generate speeches that match the speaker's emotion presented in the video using the desired speaker voice as reference. V2C is more challenging than conventional text-to-speech tasks as it additionally requires the generated speech to exactly match the varying emotions and speaking speed presented in the video. Unlike previous works, we propose a novel movie dubbing architecture to tackle these problems via hierarchical prosody modelling, which bridges the visual information to corresponding speech prosody from three aspects: lip, face, and scene. Specifically, we align lip movement to the speech duration, and convey facial expression to speech energy and pitch via attention mechanism based on valence and arousal representations inspired by recent psychology findings. Moreover, we design an emotion booster to capture the atmosphere from global video scenes. All these embeddings together are used to generate mel-spectrogram and then convert to speech waves via existing vocoder. Extensive experimental results on the Chem and V2C benchmark datasets demonstrate the favorable performance of the proposed method. The source code and trained models will be released to the public.

Hunting for the hidden-charm molecular states with strange quark in $B$ and $B_s$ decays

In the present work, we investigate the productions of the molecular states composed of $D^{(*)}_s \bar{D}^{(*)}$ and $D^{(*)}_s \bar{D}^{(*)}_s$ in the $B$ and $B_s$ decays by using an effective Lagrangian approach. The branching ratios in terms of the model parameter $α$ and the binding energy $ΔE$ are estimated. Our estimations indicate that the branching fractions are of the order of $10^{-4}$ and the relative ratios are very weakly dependent on the model parameter $α$ and the binding energy $ΔE$. The predicted ratios are helpful for searching the hidden-charm molecular states with strange quark in the future experiments at Belle II and LHCb.

The $X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψπγ$ and $X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψππγ$ decays

We study the $ρ$ and $ω$ meson contribution to the radiative decays $X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψπγ$ and $X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψππγ$. The $X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψπγ$ is dominated by the $ω$ meson. As for the $X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψππγ$, the contributions of the cascade decays through the $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons are strongly suppressed with respect to the diagrams which proceed either through the $ψ(2S)$ or the three body decay of $ρ$. The branching ratios of $X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψπγ$ and $X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψππγ$ are $(8.10^{+3.50}_{-2.88})\times10^{-3}$ and $(2.38\pm1.06)\%$, which may be accessible by the BESIII and LHCb Collaborations. Especailly, the $X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψπγ$ and $X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^- γ$ decays can be employed to extract the couplings $g_{Xψω}$ and $g_{Xψρ}$, which probe the isoscalar and isovector components of the X(3872) wave function respectively.

The breakdown of both strange metal and superconducting states at a pressure-induced quantum critical point in iron-pnictide superconductors

The strange metal (SM) state, characterized by a linear-in-temperature resistivity, is often seen in the normal state of high temperature superconductors. It is believed that the SM state is one of the keys to understand the underlying mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity. Here we report the first observation of the concurrent breakdown of the SM normal state and superconductivity at a pressure-induced quantum critical point in an iron-pnictide superconductor, Ca10(Pt4As8)((Fe0.97Pt0.03)2As2)5. We find that, upon suppressing the superconducting state by applying pressure, the power exponent changes from 1 to 2, and the corresponding coefficient A, the slope of the temperature-linear resistivity per FeAs layer, gradually diminishes. At a critical pressure (12.5 GPa), A and Tc go to zero concurrently, where a quantum phase transition (QPT) from a superconducting state with a SM normal state to a non-superconducting Fermi liquid state takes place. Scaling analysis on the results obtained from the pressurized 1048 superconductor reveals that A and Tc have a positive relation, which exhibits a similarity with that is seen in other chemically-doped unconventional superconductors, regardless of the type of the tuning method (doping or pressurizing), the crystal structure, the bulk or film superconductors and the nature of dopant. These results suggest that there is a simple but powerful organizational principle of connecting the SM normal state with the high-Tc superconductivity.

Measurement of $^{19}$F($p$,$γ$)$^{20}$Ne reaction suggests CNO break-out in first stars

The origin of calcium production in the first stars (Pop III stars), which formed out of the primordial matter of the Big Bang, and their fates, remain most fascinating mysteries in astrophysics. Advanced nuclear burning and supernovae were thought to be the dominant source of the Ca production seen in all stars. Here we report on a qualitatively different path to Ca production through break-out from the "warm" carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle. We extend direct measurement of the $^{19}$F($p$, $γ$)$^{20}$Ne break-out reaction down to an unprecedentedly low energy point of 186 keV and discover a key resonance at 225 keV. In the domain of astrophysical interest, at around 0.1 giga kelvin, this thermonuclear $^{19}$F($p$,$γ$)$^{20}$Ne rate is up to a factor of 7.4 larger than the previous recommended rate. Our stellar models show a stronger break-out during stellar hydrogen burning than thought before, and may reveal the nature of Ca production in Pop III stars imprinted on the oldest known ultra-iron poor star, SMSS0313-6708. This result from the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, the deepest laboratory in the world, offering an environment with extremely low cosmic-ray induced background, has far-reaching implications on our understanding of how the first stars evolve and die. Our rate showcases the impact that faint Pop III star supernovae can have on the nucleosynthesis observed in the oldest known stars and first galaxies, key mission targets of the James Webb Space Telescope.

Pressure-Induced Superconductivity and Its Scaling with Doping-Induced Superconductivity in the Iron Pnictide with Skutterudite Intermediary Layers

The Ca10(PtnAs8)(Fe2As2)5 (n=3,4) compounds are a new type of iron pnictide superconductors whose structures consist of stacking Ca-PtnAs8-Ca-Fe2As2 layers in a unit cell. When n=3 (the 10-3-8 phase), the undoped compound is an antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductor, while, when n=4 (the 10-4-8 phase), the undoped compound is a superconductor with the transition temperature of 26K. Here we report the results of high-pressure studies on the 10-3-8 compound obtained through a combination of in-situ resistance, magnetic susceptibility, and Hall coefficient measurements. We find that its AFM order can be suppressed completely at 3.5 GPa and then superconducting state appears in the pressure range of 3.5-7 GPa. The pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature displays a dome-like shape.

Program Generation from Diverse Video Demonstrations

The ability to use inductive reasoning to extract general rules from multiple observations is a vital indicator of intelligence. As humans, we use this ability to not only interpret the world around us, but also to predict the outcomes of the various interactions we experience. Generalising over multiple observations is a task that has historically presented difficulties for machines to grasp, especially when requiring computer vision. In this paper, we propose a model that can extract general rules from video demonstrations by simultaneously performing summarisation and translation. Our approach differs from prior works by framing the problem as a multi-sequence-to-sequence task, wherein summarisation is learnt by the model. This allows our model to utilise edge cases that would otherwise be suppressed or discarded by traditional summarisation techniques. Additionally, we show that our approach can handle noisy specifications without the need for additional filtering methods. We evaluate our model by synthesising programs from video demonstrations in the Vizdoom environment achieving state-of-the-art results with a relative increase of 11.75% program accuracy on prior works

The optical spectral features of 27 Fermi blazars

A spectral variation accompanied with flux variability is a commonly-observed phenomenon for blazars. In order to further investigate the optical spectral feature of blazars, we have collected the long-term optical V and R band data of 27 blazars (14 BL Lacs and 13 FSRQs), and calculated their optical spectral indices. The results show that the spectral indices vary with respect to the brightness for all of these blazars. In general, the optical spectrum progressively becomes flatter (or steeper), when the brightness increases. However the spectrum changes more and more slowly, until it tends to be stable. In other words, the source becomes bluer (or redder) and then gradually stabilizes when it brightens, which are briefly named the bluer-stable-when-brighter (BSWB) and redder-stable-when-brighter (RSWB) behaviors, respectively. Thirteen of the 14 BL Lacs show the BSWB behavior, with an exception of AO 0235+164. On the contrary, most of FSRQs (10 out of 13) exhibit the RSWB trend. It is confirmed that blazars follow the two universal optical spectral behaviors, namely, BSWB and RSWB. The model of two constant-spectral-index components can well explain the optical spectral features qualitatively and quantitatively. The results illustrate that the optical emission are mainly composed of two stable-color components, i.e., less variable thermal emission and high variable synchrotron radiation. And in most cases, the thermal component of BL Lacs is redder than that of synchrotron radiation, whereas FSRQs are the opposite.

Pressure-induced coevolution of transport properties and lattice stability in CaK(Fe1-xNix)4As4 (x= 0.04 and 0) superconductors with and without spin-vortex crystal state

Here we report the first investigation on correlation between the transport properties and the corresponding stability of the lattice structure for CaK(Fe1-xNix)4As4 (x=0.04 and 0), a new type of putative topological superconductors, with and without a spin-vortex crystal (SVC) state in a wide pressure range involving superconducting to non-superconducting transition and the half- to full-collapse of tetragonal (h-cT and f-cT) phases, by the complementary measurements of high-pressure resistance, Hall coefficient and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. We identify the three critical pressures, P1 that is the turn-on critical pressure of the h-cT phase transition and it coincides with the critical pressure for the sign change of Hall coefficient from positive to negative, a manifestation of the Fermi surface reconstruction, P2 that is the turn-off pressures of the h-cT phase transition, and P3 that is the critical pressure of the f-cT phase transition. By comparing the high-pressure results measured from the two kinds of samples, we find a distinct left-shift of the P1 for the doped sample, at the pressure of which its SVC state is fully suppressed, however the P2 and the P3 remain the same as that of the undoped one. Our results not only provide a consistent understanding on the results reported before, but also demonstrate the importance of the Fe-As bonding in stabilizing the superconductivity of the iron pnictide superconductors through the pressure window.

Four-dimensional direct detection with Jones space optical full-field recovery

Data centers, the engines of the global Internet, are supported by massive high-speed optical interconnects. In optical fiber communication, the classic direct detection obtains only the intensity of the optical field, while the coherent detection counterpart utilizes both phase and polarization diversities at the expense of beating with a narrow-linewidth and high-stable local oscillator (LO). Herein, we propose and demonstrate a four-dimensional Jones space optical field recovery (4-D JSFR) scheme without LO. The information encoded on the intensity and phase of both polarizations can be captured by the polarization-diversity full-field receiver structure and subsequently extracted through deep neural network-aided field recovery. It achieves similar electrical spectral efficiency as standard intradyne coherent detection. The fully recovered optical field can extend the transmission distance beyond the power fading limitation induced by fiber chromatic dispersion. Furthermore, the LO-free advantage makes 4-D JSFR suitable for monolithic photonic integration, offering a spectrally efficient and cost-effective candidate for large-scale data center applications. Our results could motivate a fundamental paradigm shift in the optical field recovery theory and future optical transceiver design.

Robust Orthogonal Machine Learning of Treatment Effects

Causal learning is the key to obtaining stable predictions and answering \textit{what if} problems in decision-makings. In causal learning, it is central to seek methods to estimate the average treatment effect (ATE) from observational data. The Double/Debiased Machine Learning (DML) is one of the prevalent methods to estimate ATE. However, the DML estimators can suffer from an \textit{error-compounding issue} and even give extreme estimates when the propensity scores are close to 0 or 1. Previous studies have overcome this issue through some empirical tricks such as propensity score trimming, yet none of the existing works solves it from a theoretical standpoint. In this paper, we propose a \textit{Robust Causal Learning (RCL)} method to offset the deficiencies of DML estimators. Theoretically, the RCL estimators i) satisfy the (higher-order) orthogonal condition and are as \textit{consistent and doubly robust} as the DML estimators, and ii) get rid of the error-compounding issue. Empirically, the comprehensive experiments show that: i) the RCL estimators give more stable estimations of the causal parameters than DML; ii) the RCL estimators outperform traditional estimators and their variants when applying different machine learning models on both simulation and benchmark datasets, and a mimic consumer credit dataset generated by WGAN.

Efficient and Accurate Quantized Image Super-Resolution on Mobile NPUs, Mobile AI & AIM 2022 challenge: Report

Image super-resolution is a common task on mobile and IoT devices, where one often needs to upscale and enhance low-resolution images and video frames. While numerous solutions have been proposed for this problem in the past, they are usually not compatible with low-power mobile NPUs having many computational and memory constraints. In this Mobile AI challenge, we address this problem and propose the participants to design an efficient quantized image super-resolution solution that can demonstrate a real-time performance on mobile NPUs. The participants were provided with the DIV2K dataset and trained INT8 models to do a high-quality 3X image upscaling. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the Synaptics VS680 Smart Home board with a dedicated edge NPU capable of accelerating quantized neural networks. All proposed solutions are fully compatible with the above NPU, demonstrating an up to 60 FPS rate when reconstructing Full HD resolution images. A detailed description of all models developed in the challenge is provided in this paper.

Investigations on the light hadron decays of $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$

The light hadron decay processes of $Z_b(10610)/Z_b(10650)$ provide us a way to study their nature and decay mechanism. In this work, we evaluate the branching ratios of $Z_b(10610)/Z_b(10650) \to VP$ ($V$ and $P$ stand for light vector and pseudoscalar mesons, respectively) using an effective Lagrangian approach, in which the contributions of intermediate bottomed meson triangle loops are considered. In our calculations, the $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$ are regarded as $B\bar{B}^*+c.c.$ and $B^*\bar{B}^*$ molecular states, respectively. The predicted branching ratios of $Z_b(10610)\rightarrow VP$ are about in the order of $10^{-2}$, while the branching ratios of $Z_b(10650)\rightarrow VP$ are in the order of $10^{-3}$. Furthermore, the dependence of these ratios between different decay modes of $Z_b(10610)/Z_b(10650)$ on the mixing $η-η^\prime$ angle $θ_P$ is investigated, which may be a good quantity for the experiments. It is hoped that the calculations here could be tested by future experiments.
