Beyond Clicks: Modeling Multi-Relational Item Graph for Session-Based Target Behavior Prediction

Session-based target behavior prediction aims to predict the next item to be interacted with specific behavior types (e.g., clicking). Although existing methods for session-based behavior prediction leverage powerful representation learning approaches to encode items' sequential relevance in a low-dimensional space, they suffer from several limitations. Firstly, they focus on only utilizing the same type of user behavior for prediction, but ignore the potential of taking other behavior data as auxiliary information. This is particularly crucial when the target behavior is sparse but important (e.g., buying or sharing an item). Secondly, item-to-item relations are modeled separately and locally in one behavior sequence, and they lack a principled way to globally encode these relations more effectively. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel Multi-relational Graph Neural Network model for Session-based target behavior Prediction, namely MGNN-SPred for short. Specifically, we build a Multi-Relational Item Graph (MRIG) based on all behavior sequences from all sessions, involving target and auxiliary behavior types. Based on MRIG, MGNN-SPred learns global item-to-item relations and further obtains user preferences w.r.t. current target and auxiliary behavior sequences, respectively. In the end, MGNN-SPred leverages a gating mechanism to adaptively fuse user representations for predicting next item interacted with target behavior. The extensive experiments on two real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of MGNN-SPred by comparing with state-of-the-art session-based prediction methods, validating the benefits of leveraging auxiliary behavior and learning item-to-item relations over MRIG.

Pretraining the Noisy Channel Model for Task-Oriented Dialogue

Direct decoding for task-oriented dialogue is known to suffer from the explaining-away effect, manifested in models that prefer short and generic responses. Here we argue for the use of Bayes' theorem to factorize the dialogue task into two models, the distribution of the context given the response, and the prior for the response itself. This approach, an instantiation of the noisy channel model, both mitigates the explaining-away effect and allows the principled incorporation of large pretrained models for the response prior. We present extensive experiments showing that a noisy channel model decodes better responses compared to direct decoding and that a two stage pretraining strategy, employing both open-domain and task-oriented dialogue data, improves over randomly initialized models.

A deep learning based known plaintext attack method for chaotic cryptosystem

In this paper, we propose a known-plaintext attack (KPA) method based on deep learning for traditional chaotic encryption scheme. We employ the convolutional neural network to learn the operation mechanism of chaotic cryptosystem, and accept the trained network as the final decryption system. To evaluate the attack performance of different networks on different chaotic cryptosystem, we adopt two neural networks to perform known-plaintext attacks on two distinct chaotic encryption schemes. The experimental results demonstrate the potential of deep learning-based method for known-plaintext attack against chaotic cryptosystem. Different from the previous known-plaintext attack methods, which were usually limited to a specific chaotic cryptosystem, a neural network can be applied to the cryptanalysis of various chaotic cryptosystems with deep learning-based approach, while several different networks can be designed for the cryptanalysis of chaotic cryptosystems. This paper provides a new idea for the cryptanalysis of chaotic image encryption algorithm.

A Hybrid Bandit Model with Visual Priors for Creative Ranking in Display Advertising

Creative plays a great important role in e-commerce for exhibiting products. Sellers usually create multiple creatives for comprehensive demonstrations, thus it is crucial to display the most appealing design to maximize the Click-Through Rate~(CTR). For this purpose, modern recommender systems dynamically rank creatives when a product is proposed for a user. However, this task suffers more cold-start problem than conventional products recommendation In this paper, we propose a hybrid bandit model with visual priors which first makes predictions with a visual evaluation, and then naturally evolves to focus on the specialities through the hybrid bandit model. Our contributions are three-fold: 1) We present a visual-aware ranking model (called VAM) that incorporates a list-wise ranking loss for ordering the creatives according to the visual appearance. 2) Regarding visual evaluations as a prior, the hybrid bandit model (called HBM) is proposed to evolve consistently to make better posteriori estimations by taking more observations into consideration for online scenarios. 3) A first large-scale creative dataset, CreativeRanking, is constructed, which contains over 1.7M creatives of 500k products as well as their real impression and click data. Extensive experiments have also been conducted on both our dataset and public Mushroom dataset, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Faster State Preparation across Quantum Phase Transition Assisted by Reinforcement Learning

An energy gap develops near quantum critical point of quantum phase transition in a finite many-body (MB) system, facilitating the ground state transformation by adiabatic parameter change. In real application scenarios, however, the efficacy for such a protocol is compromised by the need to balance finite system life time with adiabaticity, as exemplified in a recent experiment that prepares three-mode balanced Dicke state near deterministically [PNAS {\bf 115}, 6381 (2018)]. Instead of tracking the instantaneous ground state as unanimously required for most adiabatic crossing, this work reports a faster sweeping policy taking advantage of excited level dynamics. It is obtained based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) from a multi-step training scheme we develop. In the absence of loss, a fidelity $\ge 99\%$ between prepared and the target Dicke state is achieved over a small fraction of the adiabatically required time. When loss is included, training is carried out according to an operational benchmark, the interferometric sensitivity of the prepared state instead of fidelity, leading to better sensitivity in about half of the previously reported time. Implemented in a Bose-Einstein condensate of $\sim 10^4$ $^{87}$Rb atoms, the balanced three-mode Dicke state exhibiting an improved number squeezing of $13.02\pm0.20$ dB is observed within 766 ms, highlighting the potential of DRL for quantum dynamics control and quantum state preparation in interacting MB systems.

Improving Accuracy and Diversity in Matching of Recommendation with Diversified Preference Network

Recently, real-world recommendation systems need to deal with millions of candidates. It is extremely challenging to conduct sophisticated end-to-end algorithms on the entire corpus due to the tremendous computation costs. Therefore, conventional recommendation systems usually contain two modules. The matching module focuses on the coverage, which aims to efficiently retrieve hundreds of items from large corpora, while the ranking module generates specific ranks for these items. Recommendation diversity is an essential factor that impacts user experience. Most efforts have explored recommendation diversity in ranking, while the matching module should take more responsibility for diversity. In this paper, we propose a novel Heterogeneous graph neural network framework for diversified recommendation (GraphDR) in matching to improve both recommendation accuracy and diversity. Specifically, GraphDR builds a huge heterogeneous preference network to record different types of user preferences, and conduct a field-level heterogeneous graph attention network for node aggregation. We also innovatively conduct a neighbor-similarity based loss to balance both recommendation accuracy and diversity for the diversified matching task. In experiments, we conduct extensive online and offline evaluations on a real-world recommendation system with various accuracy and diversity metrics and achieve significant improvements. We also conduct model analyses and case study for a better understanding of our model. Moreover, GraphDR has been deployed on a well-known recommendation system, which affects millions of users. The source code will be released.

Universal relations between atomic dipolar relaxation and van der Waals interaction

Dipolar relaxation happens when one or both colliding atoms flip their spins exothermically inside a magnetic ($B$) field. This work reports precise measurements of dipolar relaxation in a Bose-Einstein condensate of ground state $^{87}$Rb atoms together with in-depth theoretical investigations. Previous perturbative treatments fail to explain our observations except at very small $B$-fields. By employing quantum defect theory based on analytic solutions of asymptotic van der Waals interaction $-C_6/R^6$ ($R$ being interatomic spacing), we significantly expand the applicable range of perturbative treatment. We find the $B$-dependent dipolar relaxation lineshapes are largely universal, determined by the coefficient $C_6$ and the associated $s$-wave scattering lengths $a_{\rm sc}$ of the states before and after spin flips. This universality, which applies generally to other atomic species as well, implicates potential controls of dipolar relaxation and related cold chemical reactions by tuning $a_{\rm sc}$.

Learning the Implicit Semantic Representation on Graph-Structured Data

Existing representation learning methods in graph convolutional networks are mainly designed by describing the neighborhood of each node as a perceptual whole, while the implicit semantic associations behind highly complex interactions of graphs are largely unexploited. In this paper, we propose a Semantic Graph Convolutional Networks (SGCN) that explores the implicit semantics by learning latent semantic-paths in graphs. In previous work, there are explorations of graph semantics via meta-paths. However, these methods mainly rely on explicit heterogeneous information that is hard to be obtained in a large amount of graph-structured data. SGCN first breaks through this restriction via leveraging the semantic-paths dynamically and automatically during the node aggregating process. To evaluate our idea, we conduct sufficient experiments on several standard datasets, and the empirical results show the superior performance of our model.

Quality meets Diversity: A Model-Agnostic Framework for Computerized Adaptive Testing

Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) is emerging as a promising testing application in many scenarios, such as education, game and recruitment, which targets at diagnosing the knowledge mastery levels of examinees on required concepts. It shows the advantage of tailoring a personalized testing procedure for each examinee, which selects questions step by step, depending on her performance. While there are many efforts on developing CAT systems, existing solutions generally follow an inflexible model-specific fashion. That is, they need to observe a specific cognitive model which can estimate examinee's knowledge levels and design the selection strategy according to the model estimation. In this paper, we study a novel model-agnostic CAT problem, where we aim to propose a flexible framework that can adapt to different cognitive models. Meanwhile, this work also figures out CAT solution with addressing the problem of how to generate both high-quality and diverse questions simultaneously, which can give a comprehensive knowledge diagnosis for each examinee. Inspired by Active Learning, we propose a novel framework, namely Model-Agnostic Adaptive Testing (MAAT) for CAT solution, where we design three sophisticated modules including Quality Module, Diversity Module and Importance Module. Extensive experimental results on two real-world datasets clearly demonstrate that our MAAT can support CAT with guaranteeing both quality and diversity perspectives.

An Odor Labeling Convolutional Encoder-Decoder for Odor Sensing in Machine Olfaction

Deep learning methods have been widely applied to visual and acoustic technology. In this paper, we proposed an odor labeling convolutional encoder-decoder (OLCE) for odor identification in machine olfaction. OLCE composes a convolutional neural network encoder and decoder where the encoder output is constrained to odor labels. An electronic nose was used for the data collection of gas responses followed by a normative experimental procedure. Several evaluation indexes were calculated to evaluate the algorithm effectiveness: accuracy 92.57%, precision 92.29%, recall rate 92.06%, F1-Score 91.96%, and Kappa coefficient 90.76%. We also compared the model with some algorithms used in machine olfaction. The comparison result demonstrated that OLCE had the best performance among these algorithms. In the paper, some perspectives of machine olfactions have been also discussed.

Exploring the Usage of Online Food Delivery Data for Intra-Urban Job and Housing Mobility Detection and Characterization

Human mobility plays a critical role in urban planning and policy-making. However, at certain spatial and temporal resolutions, it is very challenging to track, for example, job and housing mobility. In this study, we explore the usage of a new modality of dataset, online food delivery data, to detect job and housing mobility. By leveraging millions of meal orders from a popular online food ordering and delivery service in Beijing, China, we are able to detect job and housing moves at much higher spatial and temporal resolutions than using traditional data sources. Popular moving seasons and origins/destinations can be well identified. More importantly, we match the detected moves to both macro- and micro-level factors so as to characterize job and housing dynamics. Our findings suggest that commuting distance is a major factor for job and housing mobility. We also observe that: (1) For home movers, there is a trade-off between lower housing cost and shorter commuting distance given the urban spatial structure; (2) For job hoppers, those who frequently work overtime are more likely to reduce their working hours by switching jobs. While this new modality of dataset has its limitations, we believe that ensemble approaches would be promising, where a mash-up of multiple datasets with different characteristic limitations can provide a more comprehensive picture of job and housing dynamics. Our work demonstrates the effectiveness of utilizing food delivery data to detect and analyze job and housing mobility, and contributes to realizing the full potential of ensemble-based approaches.

Reduced Reference Perceptual Quality Model and Application to Rate Control for 3D Point Cloud Compression

In rate-distortion optimization, the encoder settings are determined by maximizing a reconstruction quality measure subject to a constraint on the bit rate. One of the main challenges of this approach is to define a quality measure that can be computed with low computational cost and which correlates well with perceptual quality. While several quality measures that fulfil these two criteria have been developed for images and video, no such one exists for 3D point clouds. We address this limitation for the video-based point cloud compression (V-PCC) standard by proposing a linear perceptual quality model whose variables are the V-PCC geometry and color quantization parameters and whose coefficients can easily be computed from two features extracted from the original 3D point cloud. Subjective quality tests with 400 compressed 3D point clouds show that the proposed model correlates well with the mean opinion score, outperforming state-of-the-art full reference objective measures in terms of Spearman rank-order and Pearsons linear correlation coefficient. Moreover, we show that for the same target bit rate, ratedistortion optimization based on the proposed model offers higher perceptual quality than rate-distortion optimization based on exhaustive search with a point-to-point objective quality metric.

Conditional Uncorrelation and Efficient Non-approximate Subset Selection in Sparse Regression

Given $m$ $d$-dimensional responsors and $n$ $d$-dimensional predictors, sparse regression finds at most $k$ predictors for each responsor for linear approximation, $1\leq k \leq d-1$. The key problem in sparse regression is subset selection, which usually suffers from high computational cost. Recent years, many improved approximate methods of subset selection have been published. However, less attention has been paid on the non-approximate method of subset selection, which is very necessary for many questions in data analysis. Here we consider sparse regression from the view of correlation, and propose the formula of conditional uncorrelation. Then an efficient non-approximate method of subset selection is proposed in which we do not need to calculate any coefficients in regression equation for candidate predictors. By the proposed method, the computational complexity is reduced from $O(\frac{1}{6}{k^3}+mk^2+mkd)$ to $O(\frac{1}{6}{k^3}+\frac{1}{2}mk^2)$ for each candidate subset in sparse regression. Because the dimension $d$ is generally the number of observations or experiments and large enough, the proposed method can greatly improve the efficiency of non-approximate subset selection.

Sampling-Decomposable Generative Adversarial Recommender

Recommendation techniques are important approaches for alleviating information overload. Being often trained on implicit user feedback, many recommenders suffer from the sparsity challenge due to the lack of explicitly negative samples. The GAN-style recommenders (i.e., IRGAN) addresses the challenge by learning a generator and a discriminator adversarially, such that the generator produces increasingly difficult samples for the discriminator to accelerate optimizing the discrimination objective. However, producing samples from the generator is very time-consuming, and our empirical study shows that the discriminator performs poor in top-k item recommendation. To this end, a theoretical analysis is made for the GAN-style algorithms, showing that the generator of limit capacity is diverged from the optimal generator. This may interpret the limitation of discriminator's performance. Based on these findings, we propose a Sampling-Decomposable Generative Adversarial Recommender (SD-GAR). In the framework, the divergence between some generator and the optimum is compensated by self-normalized importance sampling; the efficiency of sample generation is improved with a sampling-decomposable generator, such that each sample can be generated in O(1) with the Vose-Alias method. Interestingly, due to decomposability of sampling, the generator can be optimized with the closed-form solutions in an alternating manner, being different from policy gradient in the GAN-style algorithms. We extensively evaluate the proposed algorithm with five real-world recommendation datasets. The results show that SD-GAR outperforms IRGAN by 12.4% and the SOTA recommender by 10% on average. Moreover, discriminator training can be 20x faster on the dataset with more than 120K items.

End-to-end trainable network for degraded license plate detection via vehicle-plate relation mining

License plate detection is the first and essential step of the license plate recognition system and is still challenging in real applications, such as on-road scenarios. In particular, small-sized and oblique license plates, mainly caused by the distant and mobile camera, are difficult to detect. In this work, we propose a novel and applicable method for degraded license plate detection via vehicle-plate relation mining, which localizes the license plate in a coarse-to-fine scheme. First, we propose to estimate the local region around the license plate by using the relationships between the vehicle and the license plate, which can greatly reduce the search area and precisely detect very small-sized license plates. Second, we propose to predict the quadrilateral bounding box in the local region by regressing the four corners of the license plate to robustly detect oblique license plates. Moreover, the whole network can be trained in an end-to-end manner. Extensive experiments verify the effectiveness of our proposed method for small-sized and oblique license plates. An Investigation on Different Underlying Quantization Schemes for Pre-trained Language Models

Recently, pre-trained language models like BERT have shown promising performance on multiple natural language processing tasks. However, the application of these models has been limited due to their huge size. To reduce its size, a popular and efficient way is quantization. Nevertheless, most of the works focusing on BERT quantization adapted primary linear clustering as the quantization scheme, and few works try to upgrade it. That limits the performance of quantization significantly. In this paper, we implement k-means quantization and compare its performance on the fix-precision quantization of BERT with linear quantization. Through the comparison, we verify that the effect of the underlying quantization scheme upgrading is underestimated and there is a huge development potential of k-means quantization. Besides, we also compare the two quantization schemes on ALBERT models to explore the robustness differences between different pre-trained models.

Rate-dependent bifurcation dodging in a thermoacoustic system driven by colored noise

Tipping in multistable systems occurs usually by varying the input slightly, resulting in the output switching to an often unsatisfactory state. This phenomenon is manifested in thermoacoustic systems. This thermoacoustic instability may lead to the disintegration of rocket engines, gas turbines and aeroengines, so it is necessary to design control measures for its suppression. It was speculated that such unwanted instability states may be dodged by changing quickly enough the bifurcation parameters. Thus, in this work, based on a fundamental mathematical model of thermoacoustic systems driven by colored noise, the corresponding Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation of the amplitude is derived by using a stochastic averaging method. A transient dynamical behavior is identified through a probability density analysis. We find that the rate of change of parameters and the correlation time of the noise are helpful to dodge thermoacoustic instability, while a relatively large noise intensity is a disadvantageous factor. In addition, power-law relationships between the maximum amplitude and the noise parameters are explored, and the probability of successfully dodging a thermoacoustic instability is calculated. These results serve as a guide to the design of engines and to propose an effective control strategy, which is of great significance to aerospace-related fields.

Application of light diffraction theory to qualify the downstream light field modulation property of mitigated KDP crystals

Micro-milling can effectively remove laser damage sites on a KDP (potassium dihydrogen phosphate) surface and then improve the laser damage resistance of the components. However, the repaired KDP surface could cause light propagating turbulence and downstream light intensification with the potential risk to damage downstream optics. In order to analyze the downstream light field modulation caused by Gaussian mitigation pits on KDP crystals, a computational model of the downstream light diffraction based on the angular spectrum theory and the Gaussian repair contour is established. The results show that the phase offset caused by the repaired surface produces a large light field modulation near the rear KDP surface. The modulation generated in the whole downstream light field is greater than that caused by the amplitude change. Therefore, the phase characteristics of the outgoing light could be suggested as a vital research topic for future research on the downstream light field modulation caused by mitigation contours. Significantly, the experimental results on the downstream light intensity distribution have good agreement with the simulation ones, which proves the validity of the established downstream light diffraction model. The phase characterization of the outgoing light is proposed as an evaluation tool in the repair of KDP crystals. The developed analytical method and numerical discrete algorithm could be also applicable in qualifying the repair quality of other optical components applied in high-power laser systems.
