Search-Engine-augmented Dialogue Response Generation with Cheaply Supervised Query Production

Knowledge-aided dialogue response generation aims at augmenting chatbots with relevant external knowledge in the hope of generating more informative responses. The majority of previous work assumes that the relevant knowledge is given as input or retrieved from a static pool of knowledge. However, this assumption violates the real-world situation, where knowledge is continually updated and a chatbot has to dynamically retrieve useful knowledge. We propose a dialogue model that can access the vast and dynamic information from any search engine for response generation. As the core module, a query producer is used to generate queries from a dialogue context to interact with a search engine. We design a training algorithm using cheap noisy supervision for the query producer, where the signals are obtained by comparing retrieved articles with the next dialogue response. As the result, the query producer is adjusted without any human annotation of gold queries, making it easily transferable to other domains and search engines. Experiments show that our query producer can achieve R@1 and R@5 rates of 62.4% and 74.8% for retrieving gold knowledge, and the overall model generates better responses over strong knowledge-aided baselines using BART and other typical systems.

Learning by Applying: A General Framework for Mathematical Reasoning via Enhancing Explicit Knowledge Learning

Mathematical reasoning is one of the crucial abilities of general artificial intelligence, which requires machines to master mathematical logic and knowledge from solving problems. However, existing approaches are not transparent (thus not interpretable) in terms of what knowledge has been learned and applied in the reasoning process. In this paper, we propose a general Learning by Applying (LeAp) framework to enhance existing models (backbones) in a principled way by explicit knowledge learning. In LeAp, we perform knowledge learning in a novel problem-knowledge-expression paradigm, with a Knowledge Encoder to acquire knowledge from problem data and a Knowledge Decoder to apply knowledge for expression reasoning. The learned mathematical knowledge, including word-word relations and word-operator relations, forms an explicit knowledge graph, which bridges the knowledge "learning" and "applying" organically. Moreover, for problem solving, we design a semantics-enhanced module and a reasoning-enhanced module that apply knowledge to improve the problem comprehension and symbol reasoning abilities of any backbone, respectively. We theoretically prove the superiority of LeAp's autonomous learning mechanism. Experiments on three real-world datasets show that LeAp improves all backbones' performances, learns accurate knowledge, and achieves a more interpretable reasoning process.

ShapeWordNet: An Interpretable Shapelet Neural Network for Physiological Signal Classification

Physiological signals are high-dimensional time series of great practical values in medical and healthcare applications. However, previous works on its classification fail to obtain promising results due to the intractable data characteristics and the severe label sparsity issues. In this paper, we try to address these challenges by proposing a more effective and interpretable scheme tailored for the physiological signal classification task. Specifically, we exploit the time series shapelets to extract prominent local patterns and perform interpretable sequence discretization to distill the whole-series information. By doing so, the long and continuous raw signals are compressed into short and discrete token sequences, where both local patterns and global contexts are well preserved. Moreover, to alleviate the label sparsity issue, a multi-scale transformation strategy is adaptively designed to augment data and a cross-scale contrastive learning mechanism is accordingly devised to guide the model training. We name our method as ShapeWordNet and conduct extensive experiments on three real-world datasets to investigate its effectiveness. Comparative results show that our proposed scheme remarkably outperforms four categories of cutting-edge approaches. Visualization analysis further witnesses the good interpretability of the sequence discretization idea based on shapelets.

A Novel Approach for Auto-Formulation of Optimization Problems

In the Natural Language for Optimization (NL4Opt) NeurIPS 2022 competition, competitors focus on improving the accessibility and usability of optimization solvers, with the aim of subtask 1: recognizing the semantic entities that correspond to the components of the optimization problem; subtask 2: generating formulations for the optimization problem. In this paper, we present the solution of our team. First, we treat subtask 1 as a named entity recognition (NER) problem with the solution pipeline including pre-processing methods, adversarial training, post-processing methods and ensemble learning. Besides, we treat subtask 2 as a generation problem with the solution pipeline including specially designed prompts, adversarial training, post-processing methods and ensemble learning. Our proposed methods have achieved the F1-score of 0.931 in subtask 1 and the accuracy of 0.867 in subtask 2, which won the fourth and third places respectively in this competition. Our code is available at https://github.com/bigdata-ustc/nl4opt.

N-Gram Nearest Neighbor Machine Translation

Nearest neighbor machine translation augments the Autoregressive Translation~(AT) with $k$-nearest-neighbor retrieval, by comparing the similarity between the token-level context representations of the target tokens in the query and the datastore. However, the token-level representation may introduce noise when translating ambiguous words, or fail to provide accurate retrieval results when the representation generated by the model contains indistinguishable context information, e.g., Non-Autoregressive Translation~(NAT) models. In this paper, we propose a novel $n$-gram nearest neighbor retrieval method that is model agnostic and applicable to both AT and NAT models. Specifically, we concatenate the adjacent $n$-gram hidden representations as the key, while the tuple of corresponding target tokens is the value. In inference, we propose tailored decoding algorithms for AT and NAT models respectively. We demonstrate that the proposed method consistently outperforms the token-level method on both AT and NAT models as well on general as on domain adaptation translation tasks. On domain adaptation, the proposed method brings $1.03$ and $2.76$ improvements regarding the average BLEU score on AT and NAT models respectively.

Simultaneous magnetic and electric Purcell enhancement in a hybrid metal-dielectric nanostructure

Hybrid metal-dielectric structures, which combine the advantages of both metal and dielectric materials, support high-confined but low-loss magnetic and electric resonances under deliberate arrangements. However, their potential for enhancing magnetic emission has not been explored. Here, we study the simultaneous magnetic and electric Purcell enhancement supported by a hybrid structure consisting of a dielectric nanoring and a silver nanorod Such a structure enables low Ohmic loss and highly-confined field under the mode hybridization of magnetic resonances on nanoring and electric resonances on nanorod in the optical communication band. So, the 60-fold magnetic Purcell enhancement and 45-fold electric Purcell enhancement can be achieved simultaneously with $>95\%$ of the radiation transmitted to far field. The position of emitter has a several-ten-nanometer tolerance for sufficiently large Purcell enhancement, which brings convenience to experimental fabrications. Moreover, an array formed by this hybrid nanostructure can further enhance the magnetic Purcell factors. The findings provide a possibility to selectively excite the magnetic and electric emission in integrated photon circuits. It may also facilitate brighter magnetic emission sources and light-emitting metasurfaces in a simpler arrangement.

Quantum enhanced sensing by echoing spin-nematic squeezing in atomic Bose-Einstein condensate

Quantum entanglement can provide enhanced precision beyond standard quantum limit (SQL), the highest precision achievable with classical means. It remains challenging, however, to observe large enhancement limited by the experimental abilities to prepare, maintain, manipulate and detect entanglement. Here, we present nonlinear interferometry protocols based on echoing spin-nematic squeezing to achieve record high enhancement factors in atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The echo is realized by a state-flip of the spin-nematic squeezed vacuum, which serves as the probe state and is refocused back to the vicinity of the unsqueezed initial state while carrying out near noiseless amplification of a signal encoded. A sensitivity of $21.6\pm0.5$ decibels (dB) for a small-angle Rabi rotation beyond the two-mode SQL of 26400 atoms as well as $16.6\pm1.3$ dB for phase sensing in a Ramsey interferometer are observed. The absolute phase sensitivity for the latter extrapolates to $103~\rm{pT/\sqrt{Hz}}$ at a probe volume of $18~μ\rm{m}^3$ for near-resonant microwave field sensing. Our work highlights the excellent many-body coherence of spin-nematic squeezing and suggests its possible quantum metrological applications in atomic magnetometer, atomic optical clock, and fundamental testing of Lorentz symmetry violation, etc.

Tiny-NewsRec: Effective and Efficient PLM-based News Recommendation

News recommendation is a widely adopted technique to provide personalized news feeds for the user. Recently, pre-trained language models (PLMs) have demonstrated the great capability of natural language understanding and benefited news recommendation via improving news modeling. However, most existing works simply finetune the PLM with the news recommendation task, which may suffer from the known domain shift problem between the pre-training corpus and downstream news texts. Moreover, PLMs usually contain a large volume of parameters and have high computational overhead, which imposes a great burden on low-latency online services. In this paper, we propose Tiny-NewsRec, which can improve both the effectiveness and the efficiency of PLM-based news recommendation. We first design a self-supervised domain-specific post-training method to better adapt the general PLM to the news domain with a contrastive matching task between news titles and news bodies. We further propose a two-stage knowledge distillation method to improve the efficiency of the large PLM-based news recommendation model while maintaining its performance. Multiple teacher models originated from different time steps of our post-training procedure are used to transfer comprehensive knowledge to the student in both its post-training and finetuning stage. Extensive experiments on two real-world datasets validate the effectiveness and efficiency of our method.

Untargeted Attack against Federated Recommendation Systems via Poisonous Item Embeddings and the Defense

Federated recommendation (FedRec) can train personalized recommenders without collecting user data, but the decentralized nature makes it susceptible to poisoning attacks. Most previous studies focus on the targeted attack to promote certain items, while the untargeted attack that aims to degrade the overall performance of the FedRec system remains less explored. In fact, untargeted attacks can disrupt the user experience and bring severe financial loss to the service provider. However, existing untargeted attack methods are either inapplicable or ineffective against FedRec systems. In this paper, we delve into the untargeted attack and its defense for FedRec systems. (i) We propose ClusterAttack, a novel untargeted attack method. It uploads poisonous gradients that converge the item embeddings into several dense clusters, which make the recommender generate similar scores for these items in the same cluster and perturb the ranking order. (ii) We propose a uniformity-based defense mechanism (UNION) to protect FedRec systems from such attacks. We design a contrastive learning task that regularizes the item embeddings toward a uniform distribution. Then the server filters out these malicious gradients by estimating the uniformity of updated item embeddings. Experiments on two public datasets show that ClusterAttack can effectively degrade the performance of FedRec systems while circumventing many defense methods, and UNION can improve the resistance of the system against various untargeted attacks, including our ClusterAttack.

Progressive Knowledge Transfer Based on Human Visual Perception Mechanism for Perceptual Quality Assessment of Point Clouds

With the wide applications of colored point cloud in many fields, point cloud perceptual quality assessment plays a vital role in the visual communication systems owing to the existence of quality degradations introduced in various stages. However, the existing point cloud quality assessments ignore the mechanism of human visual system (HVS) which has an important impact on the accuracy of the perceptual quality assessment. In this paper, a progressive knowledge transfer based on human visual perception mechanism for perceptual quality assessment of point clouds (PKT-PCQA) is proposed. The PKT-PCQA merges local features from neighboring regions and global features extracted from graph spectrum. Taking into account the HVS properties, the spatial and channel attention mechanism is also considered in PKT-PCQA. Besides, inspired by the hierarchical perception system of human brains, PKT-PCQA adopts a progressive knowledge transfer to convert the coarse-grained quality classification knowledge to the fine-grained quality prediction task. Experiments on three large and independent point cloud assessment datasets show that the proposed no reference PKT-PCQA network achieves better of equivalent performance comparing with the state-of-the-art full reference quality assessment methods, outperforming the existed no reference quality assessment network.

Incorporating Dynamic Semantics into Pre-Trained Language Model for Aspect-based Sentiment Analysis

Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) predicts sentiment polarity towards a specific aspect in the given sentence. While pre-trained language models such as BERT have achieved great success, incorporating dynamic semantic changes into ABSA remains challenging. To this end, in this paper, we propose to address this problem by Dynamic Re-weighting BERT (DR-BERT), a novel method designed to learn dynamic aspect-oriented semantics for ABSA. Specifically, we first take the Stack-BERT layers as a primary encoder to grasp the overall semantic of the sentence and then fine-tune it by incorporating a lightweight Dynamic Re-weighting Adapter (DRA). Note that the DRA can pay close attention to a small region of the sentences at each step and re-weigh the vitally important words for better aspect-aware sentiment understanding. Finally, experimental results on three benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and the rationality of our proposed model and provide good interpretable insights for future semantic modeling.

Expected $H\toμ^{+}μ^{-}$ measurement precision with $e^{+}e^{-}\to Z(q\bar{q})H$ production at the CEPC

A search for the dimuon decay of the Standard Model Higgs boson is performed using the Monte Carlo simulated events to mimic data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 ab$^{-1}$ collected with the Circular Electron-Positron Collider detector in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=240$ GeV. The paper studies $e^{+}e^{-}\to ZH,\,Z\to q\bar{q},\,H\toμ^{+}μ^{-}$ process, and the expected significance considering only the data statistical uncertainty over the background-only hypothesis for a Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV is found to be 6.1$σ$, corresponding to the precision of 19%. The systematic impacts from the background Monte Carlo statistical fluctuations are estimated to be negligible. The dependence of the measurement accuracy on the muon momentum resolution of the CEPC detector has been investigated. It is found that the muon momentum resolution has to be better than 204 MeV to discover the $H\toμμ$ process at the nominal integrated luminosity. And if the resolution is 100% worse than the designed parameter, the integrated luminosity is needed to be greater than 7.2 ab$^{-1}$ to reach 5$σ$ significance.

One Person, One Model--Learning Compound Router for Sequential Recommendation

Deep learning has brought significant breakthroughs in sequential recommendation (SR) for capturing dynamic user interests. A series of recent research revealed that models with more parameters usually achieve optimal performance for SR tasks, inevitably resulting in great challenges for deploying them in real systems. Following the simple assumption that light networks might already suffice for certain users, in this work, we propose CANet, a conceptually simple yet very scalable framework for assigning adaptive network architecture in an input-dependent manner to reduce unnecessary computation. The core idea of CANet is to route the input user behaviors with a light-weighted router module. Specifically, we first construct the routing space with various submodels parameterized in terms of multiple model dimensions such as the number of layers, hidden size and embedding size. To avoid extra storage overhead of the routing space, we employ a weight-slicing schema to maintain all the submodels in exactly one network. Furthermore, we leverage several solutions to solve the discrete optimization issues caused by the router module. Thanks to them, CANet could adaptively adjust its network architecture for each input in an end-to-end manner, in which the user preference can be effectively captured. To evaluate our work, we conduct extensive experiments on benchmark datasets. Experimental results show that CANet reduces computation by 55 ~ 65% while preserving the accuracy of the original model. Nested Named Entity Recognition from Medical Texts: An Adaptive Shared Network Architecture with Attentive CRF

Recognizing useful named entities plays a vital role in medical information processing, which helps drive the development of medical area research. Deep learning methods have achieved good results in medical named entity recognition (NER). However, we find that existing methods face great challenges when dealing with the nested named entities. In this work, we propose a novel method, referred to as ASAC, to solve the dilemma caused by the nested phenomenon, in which the core idea is to model the dependency between different categories of entity recognition. The proposed method contains two key modules: the adaptive shared (AS) part and the attentive conditional random field (ACRF) module. The former part automatically assigns adaptive weights across each task to achieve optimal recognition accuracy in the multi-layer network. The latter module employs the attention operation to model the dependency between different entities. In this way, our model could learn better entity representations by capturing the implicit distinctions and relationships between different categories of entities. Extensive experiments on public datasets verify the effectiveness of our method. Besides, we also perform ablation analyses to deeply understand our methods.

Graph Reinforcement Learning Application to Co-operative Decision-Making in Mixed Autonomy Traffic: Framework, Survey, and Challenges

Proper functioning of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) is crucial for the safety and efficiency of future intelligent transport systems. Meanwhile, transitioning to fully autonomous driving requires a long period of mixed autonomy traffic, including both CAVs and human-driven vehicles. Thus, collaboration decision-making for CAVs is essential to generate appropriate driving behaviors to enhance the safety and efficiency of mixed autonomy traffic. In recent years, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has been widely used in solving decision-making problems. However, the existing DRL-based methods have been mainly focused on solving the decision-making of a single CAV. Using the existing DRL-based methods in mixed autonomy traffic cannot accurately represent the mutual effects of vehicles and model dynamic traffic environments. To address these shortcomings, this article proposes a graph reinforcement learning (GRL) approach for multi-agent decision-making of CAVs in mixed autonomy traffic. First, a generic and modular GRL framework is designed. Then, a systematic review of DRL and GRL methods is presented, focusing on the problems addressed in recent research. Moreover, a comparative study on different GRL methods is further proposed based on the designed framework to verify the effectiveness of GRL methods. Results show that the GRL methods can well optimize the performance of multi-agent decision-making for CAVs in mixed autonomy traffic compared to the DRL methods. Finally, challenges and future research directions are summarized. This study can provide a valuable research reference for solving the multi-agent decision-making problems of CAVs in mixed autonomy traffic and can promote the implementation of GRL-based methods into intelligent transportation systems. CU-Net: LiDAR Depth-Only Completion With Coupled U-Net

LiDAR depth-only completion is a challenging task to estimate dense depth maps only from sparse measurement points obtained by LiDAR. Even though the depth-only methods have been widely developed, there is still a significant performance gap with the RGB-guided methods that utilize extra color images. We find that existing depth-only methods can obtain satisfactory results in the areas where the measurement points are almost accurate and evenly distributed (denoted as normal areas), while the performance is limited in the areas where the foreground and background points are overlapped due to occlusion (denoted as overlap areas) and the areas where there are no measurement points around (denoted as blank areas) since the methods have no reliable input information in these areas. Building upon these observations, we propose an effective Coupled U-Net (CU-Net) architecture for depth-only completion. Instead of directly using a large network for regression, we employ the local U-Net to estimate accurate values in the normal areas and provide the global U-Net with reliable initial values in the overlap and blank areas. The depth maps predicted by the two coupled U-Nets are fused by learned confidence maps to obtain final results. In addition, we propose a confidence-based outlier removal module, which removes outliers using simple judgment conditions. Our proposed method boosts the final results with fewer parameters and achieves state-of-the-art results on the KITTI benchmark. Moreover, it owns a powerful generalization ability under various depth densities, varying lighting, and weather conditions.

Searching Dense Point Correspondences via Permutation Matrix Learning

Although 3D point cloud data has received widespread attentions as a general form of 3D signal expression, applying point clouds to the task of dense correspondence estimation between 3D shapes has not been investigated widely. Furthermore, even in the few existing 3D point cloud-based methods, an important and widely acknowledged principle, i.e . one-to-one matching, is usually ignored. In response, this paper presents a novel end-to-end learning-based method to estimate the dense correspondence of 3D point clouds, in which the problem of point matching is formulated as a zero-one assignment problem to achieve a permutation matching matrix to implement the one-to-one principle fundamentally. Note that the classical solutions of this assignment problem are always non-differentiable, which is fatal for deep learning frameworks. Thus we design a special matching module, which solves a doubly stochastic matrix at first and then projects this obtained approximate solution to the desired permutation matrix. Moreover, to guarantee end-to-end learning and the accuracy of the calculated loss, we calculate the loss from the learned permutation matrix but propagate the gradient to the doubly stochastic matrix directly which bypasses the permutation matrix during the backward propagation. Our method can be applied to both non-rigid and rigid 3D point cloud data and extensive experiments show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance for dense correspondence learning.

Augmenting Multi-Turn Text-to-SQL Datasets with Self-Play

The task of context-dependent text-to-SQL aims to convert multi-turn user utterances to formal SQL queries. This is a challenging task due to both the scarcity of training data from which to learn complex contextual dependencies and to generalize to unseen databases. In this paper we explore augmenting the training datasets using self-play, which leverages contextual information to synthesize new interactions to adapt the model to new databases. We first design a SQL-to-text model conditioned on a sampled goal query, which represents a user's intent, that then converses with a text-to-SQL semantic parser to generate new interactions. We then filter the synthesized interactions and retrain the models with the augmented data. We find that self-play improves the accuracy of a strong baseline on SParC and CoSQL, two widely used cross-domain text-to-SQL datasets. Our analysis shows that self-play simulates various conversational thematic relations, enhances cross-domain generalization and improves beam-search.
