Experimental simulation of quantum graphs by microwave networks

We present the results of experimental and theoretical study of irregular, tetrahedral microwave networks consisting of coaxial cables (annular waveguides) connected by T-joints. The spectra of the networks were measured in the frequency range 0.0001-16 GHz in order to obtain their statistical properties such as the integrated nearest neighbor spacing distribution and the spectral rigidity. The comparison of our experimental and theoretical results shows that microwave networks can simulate quantum graphs with time reversal symmetry. In particular, we use the spectra of the microwave networks to study the periodic orbits of the simulated quantum graphs. We also present experimental study of directional microwave networks consisting of coaxial cables and Faraday isolators for which the time reversal symmetry is broken. In this case our experimental results indicate that spectral statistics of directional microwave networks deviate from predictions of Gaussian orthogonal ensembles (GOE) in random matrix theory approaching, especially for small eigenfrequency spacing s, results for Gaussian unitary ensembles (GUE). Experimental results are supported by the theoretical analysis of directional graphs.

Quantum dynamical entropy and decoherence rate

We investigate quantum dynamical systems defined on a finite dimensional Hilbert space and subjected to an interaction with an environment. The rate of decoherence of initially pure states, measured by the increase of their von Neumann entropy, averaged over an ensemble of random pure states, is proved to be bounded from above by the partial entropy used to define the ALF dynamical entropy. The rate of decoherence induced by the sequence of the von Neumann projectors measurements is shown to be maximal, if the measurements are performed in a randomly chosen basis. The numerically observed linear increase of entropies is attributed to free-independence of the measured observable and the unitary dynamical map.

Families of line-graphs and their quantization

Any directed graph G with N vertices and J edges has an associated line-graph L(G) where the J edges form the vertices of L(G). We show that the non-zero eigenvalues of the adjacency matrices are the same for all graphs of such a family L^n(G). We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a line-graph to be quantisable and demonstrate that the spectra of associated quantum propagators follow the predictions of random matrices under very general conditions. Line-graphs may therefore serve as models to study the semiclassical limit (of large matrix size) of a quantum dynamics on graphs with fixed classical behaviour.

Irreversible Quantum Baker Map

We propose a generalization of the model of classical baker map on the torus, in which the images of two parts of the phase space do overlap. This transformation is irreversible and cannot be quantized by means of a unitary Floquet operator. A corresponding quantum system is constructed as a completely positive map acting in the space of density matrices. We investigate spectral properties of this super-operator and their link with the increase of the entropy of initially pure states.

Kepler Map for H atom driven by microwaves with arbitrary polarization

Dynamics of hydrogen atom driven by microwave field of arbitrary polarization is approximated by the discrete mapping. The map describes the change of dynamical variables from an aphelion or a perihelion to the next one. The results are compared with numerical simulation and previous approximations.

Classical 1D maps, quantum graphs and ensembles of unitary matrices

We study a certain class of classical one dimensional piecewise linear maps. For these systems we introduce an infinite family of Markov partitions into equal cells. The symbolic dynamics generated by these systems is described by bistochastic (doubly stochastic) matrices. We analyze the structure of graphs generated from the corresponding symbolic dynamics. We demonstrate that the spectra of quantized graphs corresponding to the regular classical systems have locally Poissonian statistics, while quantized graphs derived from classically chaotic systems display statistical properties characteristic of Circular Unitary Ensemble, even though the corresponding unitary matrices are sparse.

Different Traces of Quantum Systems Having the Same Classical Limit

Many quantum systems may have the same classical limit. We argue that in the classical limit their traces do not necessarily converge one to another. The trace formula allows to express quantum traces by means of classical quantities as sums over periodic orbits of the classical system. To explain the lack of convergence of the traces we need the quantum corrections to the classical actions of periodic orbits. The four versions of the quantum baker map on the sphere serve as an illustration of this problem.

Dynamical entropy for systems with stochastic perturbation

Dynamics of deterministic systems perturbed by random additive noise is characterized quantitatively. Since for such systems the KS-entropy diverges we analyse the difference between the total entropy of a noisy system and the entropy of the noise itself. We show that this quantity is non negative and in the weak noise limit is conjectured to tend to the KS-entropy of the deterministic system. In particular, we consider one-dimensional systems with noise described by a finite-dimensional kernel, for which the Frobenius-Perron operator can be represented by a finite matrix.

Quantum baker map on the sphere

We define a class of dynamical systems on the sphere analogous to the baker map on the torus. The classical maps are characterized by dynamical entropy equal to ln 2. We construct and investigate a family of the corresponding quantum maps. In the simplest case of the model the system does not possess a time reversal symmetry and the quantum map is represented by real, orthogonal matrices of even dimension. The semiclassical ensemble of quantum maps, obtained by averaging over a range of matrix sizes, displays statistical properties characteristic of circular unitary ensemble. Time evolution of such systems may be studied with the help of the SU(2) coherent states and the generalized Husimi distribution.
