DySK-Attn: A Framework for Efficient, Real-Time Knowledge Updating in Large Language Models via Dynamic Sparse Knowledge Attention

Large Language Models (LLMs) suffer from a critical limitation: their knowledge is static and quickly becomes outdated. Retraining these massive models is computationally prohibitive, while existing knowledge editing techniques can be slow and may introduce unforeseen side effects. To address this, we propose DySK-Attn, a novel framework that enables LLMs to efficiently integrate real-time knowledge from a dynamic external source. Our approach synergizes an LLM with a dynamic Knowledge Graph (KG) that can be updated instantaneously. The core of our framework is a sparse knowledge attention mechanism, which allows the LLM to perform a coarse-to-fine grained search, efficiently identifying and focusing on a small, highly relevant subset of facts from the vast KG. This mechanism avoids the high computational cost of dense attention over the entire knowledge base and mitigates noise from irrelevant information. We demonstrate through extensive experiments on time-sensitive question-answering tasks that DySK-Attn significantly outperforms strong baselines, including standard Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and model editing techniques, in both factual accuracy for updated knowledge and computational efficiency. Our framework offers a scalable and effective solution for building LLMs that can stay current with the ever-changing world.

Proposal to Observe Transverse Sound in Normal Liquid $^3$He in Aerogel

In the Fermi liquid metallic state, a static local magnetic moment is induced on the application of a circularly polarized electromagnetic wave, via the inverse Fara-day effect (IFE). The direction of this moment is along the direction of propagation of light, and the magnitude of the moment depends on the frequency of light, the temperature and various material parameters characteristic of the metal. I propose an analogous effect in the Fermi liquid state of $^3$H. A static circulating current is induced when liquid $^3$H is driven by a circularly polarized transverse acoustic wave. For liquid $^3$H filled into aerogel, the coupled system supports a low-attenuation transverse sound mode. I estimate the magnitude of induced circulating currents for this system and find that these are within the range of experimental measurement in the low-attenuation regime. The axis of circulation is along the direction of propagation of the acoustic wave. I propose this analogue of the inverse Faraday effect as a scheme to experimentally demonstrate the propagation of transverse sound in $^3$H-aerogel.

Towards a micromechanical qubit based on quantized oscillations in superfluid helium

Superconducting circuits can exhibit quantized energy levels and long coherence times. Harnessing the anharmonicity offered by Josephson junctions, such circuits have been successfully employed as qubits, quantum limited amplifiers and sensors. Here, we consider superfluidity as the charge-neutral analogue of superconductivity. Both dissipationless mass flow and Josephson tunneling have been demonstrated in superfluid helium. We propose a quantum device, consisting of a superfluid weak link and a mechanical element. The superfluid motion in this device is quantized. The resulting discrete energy levels are resolvable at millikelvin temperatures essential to maintaining the superfluid state. Appropriate device engineering can yield the necessary nonlinearity to realize qubit functionality. Hence, this device can potentially operate as a charge-neutral, superfluid quantum bit with micron-sized dimensions and millisecond scale coherence time. We show that this quantum regime is within reach for a range of device designs.

Reviewing Developments of Graph Convolutional Network Techniques for Recommendation Systems

The Recommender system is a vital information service on today's Internet. Recently, graph neural networks have emerged as the leading approach for recommender systems. We try to review recent literature on graph neural network-based recommender systems, covering the background and development of both recommender systems and graph neural networks. Then categorizing recommender systems by their settings and graph neural networks by spectral and spatial models, we explore the motivation behind incorporating graph neural networks into recommender systems. We also analyze challenges and open problems in graph construction, embedding propagation and aggregation, and computation efficiency. This guides us to better explore the future directions and developments in this domain.

Light Induced Orbital Magnetism in Metals via Inverse Faraday Effect

We present a microscopic calculation of the inverse Faraday effect in metals. We derive a static local magnetic moment induced on the application of high-frequency light, using the Eilenberger formulation of quasiclassical theory. We include the effect of disorder and formulate a theory applicable across the entire temperature range, in the absence of external applied fields. For light-induced electric fields of amplitude $\sim 100 kV/cm$, the induced fields are large, $\sim 0.1 T$ for metallic Nb! The predictions of our theory agree with recent experimental and theoretical results [1]. An extension of this approach to superconductors would open a new route of inducing orbital magnetic field and potentially vortices in superconductors.

Disorder Induced Anomalous Thermal Hall Effect in Chiral Phases of Superfluid $^3$He

NMR experiments on liquid $^3$He infused into uniaxially anisotropic silica aerogels show the stabilisation of two equal-spin-pairing chiral phases on cooling from the normal phase. The alignment of the chiral axis relative to the anisotropy axis for these phases is predicted to depend upon temperature. A chiral A-like phase is also stabilized when $^3$He is confined to a slab of thickness $D\sim ξ$, the superfluid coherence length. For both types of confinement, scattering of quasiparticles by the random potential - aerogel or surface - is pair breaking and generates a sub-gap density of quasiparticle states. The random field also conspires with the chiral order parameter to generate skew scattering of quasiparticles in the plane normal to the chiral axis. This scattering mechanism leads to anomalous thermal Hall transport for nonequilibrium quasiparticles driven by a thermal gradient. We report theoretical results for the anomalous thermal Hall conductivity for theoretical models for chiral phases of $^3$He in both anisotropic aerogel and slabs. The anomalous thermal Hall effect (ATHE) provides an important tool to identify signatures of broken time-reversal and mirror symmetries and topology in chiral superconductors/superfluids.

Anomalous Thermal Hall Effect in Chiral Phases of $^3$He-Aerogel

We report theoretical results for heat transport by quasiparticle excitations in superfluid $^3$He infused into silica aerogel engineered with uniaxial anisotropy. For this system two distinct equal spin pairing (ESP) superfluid phases have been reported based on NMR spectroscopy. Theoretical analysis predicts the first ESP state to be the chiral A phase with chiral axis aligned along the strain axis, and the lower temperature phase to be a polar-distorted chiral phase with random transverse fluctuations in the orientation of the chiral axis. We report calculations of heat transport for the high temperature chiral phase, including an anomalous (zero field) thermal Hall current originating from branch conversion scattering of Bogoliubov quasiparticles by the chiral order parameter induced by potential scattering by the silica aerogel. Observation of an anomalous thermal Hall current would provide a direct signature of the underlying chirality and topology of the superfluid phase of $^3$He in "stretched" silica aerogels.

Approach to Solving Quasiclassical Equations with Gauge Invariance

Quasiclassical equations with manifest gauge invariance are discussed in the context of unconventional singlet superconducting states in the static limit. Deviations of the quasiclassical propagator from its equilibrium solutions in the presence of magnetic fields and Hall terms are analysed in terms of a small parameter and a formulation developed to first order in small. A modified quasiclassical propagator is defined to this order that is a solution of a new gauge-invariant Eilenberger-like equation with a normalisation condition. A Ricatti parametrisation with manifest gauge invariance is proposed. This theory is directly applicable to homogenous d-wave order parameters in the presence of magnetic fields, such as in high-temperature superconductors.

Anomalous Heat and Momentum Transport Arising from Surface Roughness in a Normal $^3$He Slab

I discuss heat and momentum transport in a mesoscopic film of $^3$He, confined by rough walls in the normal Fermi liquid state. Inelastic binary quasiparticle scattering mediated by elastic scattering from the surface roughness gives rise to a coherent "mixed"scattering channel that drives anomalous transport over a range of temperature. I calculate the thermal conductivity and viscosity of the film in this regime and derive these in terms of the film thickness and autocorrelation function of the surface roughness, which enters the formulation as an independent input. This calculation can be useful in understanding and isolating the effects of confinement and surface roughness, especially in the context of exploring the superfluid state in the film.

Transport in Fermi Liquids Confined by Rough Walls

I present theoretical calculations of the thermal conductivity of Fermi liquid 3He confined to a slab of thickness of order 100nm. The effect of the roughness of the confining surfaces is included directly in terms of the surface roughness power spectrum which may be determined experimentally. Transport at low temperatures is limited by scattering off rough surfaces and evolves into the known high-temperature limit in bulk through an anomalous regime in which both inelastic quasiparticle scattering and elastic scattering off the rough surface coexist. I show preliminary calculations for the coefficients of thermal conductivity. These studies are applicable in the context of electrical transport in metal nanowires as well as experiments that probe the superfluid phase diagram of liquid 3He in a slab geometry.

Effect of Rough Walls on Transport in Mesoscopic $^3$He Films

The interplay of bulk and boundary scattering is explored in a regime where quantum size effects modify mesoscopic transport in a degenerate Fermi liquid film of $^3$He on a rough surface. We discuss mass transport and the momentum relaxation time of the film in a torsional oscillator geometry within the framework of a quasiclassical theory that includes the experimentally determined power spectrum of the rough surface. The theory explains the anomalous temperature dependence of the relaxation rate observed experimentally. We model further studies on $^3$He confined in nanofluidic sample chambers with lithographically defined surface roughness. The improved understanding of surface roughness scattering can be extended to the analogous system of electrons in metals and suggests routes to improve the conductivity of thin metallic films.

Theory of Heat Transport of Normal Liquid 3He in Aerogel

The introduction of liquid 3He into silica aerogel provides us a with model system in which to study the effects of disorder on the properties of a strongly correlated Fermi liquid. The transport of heat, mass and spin exhibits cross-over behavior from a high temperature regime, where inelastic scattering dominates, to a low temperature regime dominated by elastic scattering off the aerogel. We report exact and approximate solutions to the Boltzmann-Landau transport equation for the thermal conductivity of liquid 3He, including elastic scattering of quasiparticles by the aerogel and inelastic quasiparticle collisions. These results provide quantitative predictions for the transport properties of liquid 3He in aerogel over a wide range of pressure, temperature and aerogel density. In particular, we obtain a scaling function, F(T/T*), for the normalized thermal conductivity, K/K_el, in terms of a reduced temperature, T/T*, where T* is a cross-over temperature defined by the elastic and inelastic collision rates. Theoretical results are compared with the available experimental data for the thermal conductivity.

Impurity Effects on the A_1-A_2 Splitting of Superfluid 3He in Aerogel

When liquid 3He is impregnated into silica aerogel a solid-like layer of 3He atoms coats the silica structure. The surface 3He is in fast exchange with the liquid on NMR timescales. The exchange coupling of liquid 3He quasiparticles with the localized 3He spins modifies the scattering of 3He quasiparticles by the aerogel structure. In a magnetic field the polarization of the solid spins gives rise to a splitting of the scattering cross-section of for `up' vs. `down' spin quasiparticles, relative to the polarization of the solid 3He. We discuss this effect, as well as the effects of non-magnetic scattering, in the context of a possible splitting of the superfluid transition for $\uparrow\uparrow$ vs. $\downarrow\downarrow$ Cooper pairs for superfluid 3He in aerogel, analogous to the A_1-A_2 splitting in bulk 3He. Comparison with the existing measurements of T_c for B< 5 kG, which show no evidence of an A_1-A_2 splitting, suggests a liquid-solid exchange coupling of order J = 0.1 mK. Measurements at higher fields, B > 20 kG, should saturate the polarization of the solid 3He and reveal the A_1-A_2 splitting.

Magnetic Susceptibility of the Balian-Werthamer Phase of 3He in Aerogel

The equilibrium superfluid phase of 3He impregnated into high-porosity silica aerogels appears to be a non-equal-spin-pairing state in zero field at all pressures, which is generally assumed to be the Balian-Werthamer (BW) phase modified by the depairing effects of the aerogel structure. The nuclear magnetic susceptibility played a key role in identifying the B-phase of pure 3He with the BW state. We report theoretical calculations of the nuclear magnetic susceptibility for the BW model of superfluid 3He in aerogel within the framework of the Fermi-liquid theory of superfluid 3He. Scattering of quasiparticles by the aerogel, in addition to Fermi-liquid exchange corrections, leads to substantial changes in the susceptibility of the BW phase. The increase in the magnetic susceptibility of 3He-aerogel compared to pure 3He-B is related to the polarizability of the gapless excitations and the impurity-induced local field. The limited data that is available is in rough agreement with theoretical predictions. Future measurements could prove important for a more definitive identification of the ordered phase, as well as for refining the theoretical model for the effects of disorder and scattering on the properties of superfluid 3He.
