Steinberg quotients and Smith-Treumann localization

Smith-Treumann localization for sheaves on the affine Grassmannian of a reductive group has previously been studied by Leslie-Lonergan (for spherical sheaves) and by Riche-Williamson (for Iwahori-Whittaker sheaves). In this paper, we show that the two versions are related by a commutative diagram that involves "convolution with the Steinberg module." As an application, we "categorify" certain formal characters of a reductive group called Steinberg quotients, previously introduced and studied by the second author. Specifically, we show that Steinberg quotients describe the stalks of spherical parity sheaves on the $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$-fixed-locus of the affine Grassmannian.

Tilting modules for reductive algebraic groups: characters and support varieties

These notes are our contribution to the Proceedings of the ICM 2026. We discuss some results we have obtained (in part jointly with coauthors) regarding the representation theory of reductive algebraic groups over algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic. These statements mainly concern tilting modules, in particular their characters and support varieties.

Modular intersection cohomology of Drinfeld's compactifications

We compute the dimension of the cohomology of stalks of intersection cohomology complexes on Zastava schemes and Drinfeld compactifications associated with a connected reductive algebraic group $G$, in case the characteristic of the coefficients field $\Bbbk$ is good for $G$. In particular, we show that these dimensions do not depend on the choice of $\Bbbk$.

Semiinfinite sheaves on affine flag varieties

We study a category of semiinfinite sheaves on the affine flag variety of a connected reductive algebraic group, with coefficients in a field (of arbitrary characteristic different from that of the base field), generalizing some results of Gaitsgory and showing that this category behaves like familiar categories of sheaves on flag varieties in many respects. Our interest is motivated by expected relations with representation theory of the Lie algebra of the Langlands dual reductive group.

Equivariant sheaves for classical groups acting on Grassmannians

Let $V$ be a finite-dimensional complex vector space. Assume that $V$ is a direct sum of subspaces each of which is equipped with a nondegenerate symmetric or skew-symmetric bilinear form. In this paper, we introduce a stratification of the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}_k(V)$ related to the action of the appropriate product of orthogonal and symplectic groups, and we study the topology of this stratification. The main results involve sheaves with coefficients in a field of characteristic other than $2$. We prove that there are "enough" parity sheaves, and that the hypercohomology of each parity sheaf also satisfies a parity-vanishing property. This situation arises in the following context: let $x$ be a nilpotent element in the Lie algebra of either $G = \mathrm{Sp}_N(\mathbb{C})$ or $G = \mathrm{SO}_N(\mathbb{C})$, and let $V = \ker x \subset \mathbb{C}^N$. Our stratification of $\mathrm{Gr}_k(V)$ is preserved by the centralizer $G^x$, and we expect our results to have applications in Springer theory for classical groups.

A modular ramified geometric Satake equivalence

We extend the ramified geometric Satake equivalence due to Zhu (for tamely ramified groups) and the third named author (in full generality) from rational coefficients to include modular and integral coefficients.

Higher nearby cycles and central sheaves on affine flag varieties

In this paper we generalize and study a notion of (unipotent) nearby cycles over a higher dimensional base based on Be\u{i}linson's description of unipotent nearby cycles, following an idea of Gaitsgory. This generalization, in the setting of affine Grassmannians, is required in recent work of Bezrukavnikov-Braverman-Finkelberg-Kazhdan.

A geometric model for blocks of Frobenius kernels

Building on a geometric counterpart of Steinberg's tensor product formula for simple representations of a connected reductive algebraic group $G$ over a field of positive characteristic, and following an idea of Arkhipov--Bezrukavnikov--Braverman--Gaitsgory--Mirkovi\'c, we define and initiate the study of some categories of perverse sheaves on the affine Grassmannian of the Langlands dual group to $G$ that should provide geometric models for blocks of representations of the Frobenius kernel $G_1$ of $G$. In particular, we show that these categories admit enough projective and injective objects, which are closely related to some tilting perverse sheaves, and that they are highest weight categories in an appropriate generalized sense.

A geometric Steinberg formula

We prove an isomorphism for simple perverse sheaves on the affine Grassmannian of a connected reductive algebraic group that is a geometric counterpart (in light of the Finkelberg-Mirkovi\'c conjecture) of the Steinberg tensor product formula for simple representations of reductive groups over fields of positive characteristic.

Silting complexes of coherent sheaves and the Humphreys conjecture

Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\Bbbk$ of characteristic $p \ge 0$, and let $\mathcal{N}$ be its nilpotent cone. Under mild hypotheses, we construct for each nilpotent $G$-orbit $C$ and each indecomposable tilting vector bundle $T$ on $C$ a certain complex $S(C,T)$ of $G \times \mathbb{G}_m$-equivariant coherent sheaves on $\mathcal{N}$. We prove that these objects are (up to shift) precisely the indecomposable objects in the coheart of a certain co-$t$-structure. We then show that if $p$ is larger than the Coxeter number, then the hypercohomology $H^\bullet(S(C,T))$ is identified with the cohomology of a tilting module for $G$. This confirms a conjecture of Humphreys on the support of the cohomology of tilting modules.

Nilpotent centralizers and good filtrations

Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field $\Bbbk$. Under mild restrictions on the characteristic of $\Bbbk$, we show that any $G$-module with a good filtration also has a good filtration as a module for the reductive part of the centralizer of a nilpotent element $x$ in its Lie algebra.

Co-$t$-structures on derived categories of coherent sheaves and the cohomology of tilting modules

We construct a co-$t$-structure on the derived category of coherent sheaves on the nilpotent cone $\mathcal{N}$ of a reductive group, as well as on the derived category of coherent sheaves on any parabolic Springer resolution. These structures are employed to show that the push-forwards of the "exotic parity objects" along the (classical) Springer resolution give indecomposable objects inside the coheart of the co-$t$-structure on $\mathcal{N}$. We also demonstrate how the various parabolic co-$t$-structures can be related by introducing an analogue to the usual translation functors. As an application, we give a proof of a scheme-theoretic formulation of the relative Humphreys conjecture on support varieties of tilting modules in type $A$ for $p>h$.

Conjectures on tilting modules and antispherical $p$-cells

For quantum groups at a root of unity, there is a web of theorems (due to Bezrukavnikov and Ostrik, and relying on work of Lusztig) connecting the following topics: (i) tilting modules; (ii) vector bundles on nilpotent orbits; and (iii) Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in the affine Weyl group. In this paper, we propose a (partly conjectural) analogous picture for reductive algebraic groups over fields of positive characteristic, inspired by a conjecture of Humphreys.

How to glue parity sheaves

Let X be a stratified space on which the Juteau-Mautner-Williamson theory of parity sheaves is available. We develop a "nearby cycles formalism" in the framework of the homotopy category of parity sheaves on X, also known as the mixed modular derived category of X. This construction is expected to have applications in modular geometric representation theory.

Nearby cycles for parity sheaves on a divisor with simple normal crossings

The first author recently introduced a "nearby cycles formalism" in the framework of chain complexes of parity sheaves. In this paper, we compute this functor in two related settings: (i) affine space, stratified by the action of a torus, and (ii) the global Schubert variety associated to the first fundamental coweight of the group $PGL_n$. The latter is a parity-sheaf analogue of Gaitsgory's central sheaf construction.

Integral exotic sheaves and the modular Lusztig-Vogan bijection

Let G be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field k of very good characteristic. The Lusztig-Vogan bijection is a bijection between the set of dominant weights for G and the set of irreducible G-equivariant vector bundles on nilpotent orbits, conjectured by Lusztig and Vogan independently, and constructed in full generality by Bezrukavnikov. In characteristic 0, this bijection is related to the theory of 2-sided cells in the affine Weyl group, and plays a key role in the proof of the Humphreys conjecture on support varieties of tilting modules for quantum groups at a root of unity. In this paper, we prove that the Lusztig-Vogan bijection is (in a way made precise in the body of the paper) independent of the characteristic of k. This allows us to extend all of its known properties from the characteristic-0 setting to the general case. We also expect this result to be a step towards a proof of the Humphreys conjecture on support varieties of tilting modules for reductive groups in positive characteristic.
