Efficient GPU Retrieval for Semantic Search

Semantic Search on LinkedIn must retrieve relevant profiles from a corpus of hundreds of millions in response to natural-language queries such as "a fintech founder in Berlin who worked in payments." The deployed relevance policy is bottleneck-oriented: every active non-negotiable facet must be satisfied, and a pre-existing LLM Graded Relevance (GR) judge operationalizes this through a fixed min/median aggregation over facet grades. Cosine similarity instead averages evidence, letting a strong match on one facet mask failure on another, capping the recall of the first-stage (L0) retriever. We present a policy-aligned retrieval framework: embeddings are partitioned into eight category-supervised segments whose scores follow the same min/median rule at serving time; for multi-vector retrieval, this segment score is computed independently per tagged document slot and maximized across slots. A lightweight single-slot Stage-1 scorer generates high-recall candidates, while scale-invariant relative-norm gating keeps category activation consistent across training, evaluation, and serving. On 21K held-out queries, this representation improves offline relevance over a matched-capacity baseline, with gains broadly distributed across facet combinations. We serve this framework with a two-stage GPU architecture: an FP8 coarse ranker scores the full corpus, increasing per-shard capacity by 71% and Stage-1 matmul throughput by 36%, then an FP16 stage exactly re-ranks an oversampled candidate set, recovering 99.6-99.8% of full-FP16 recall at over 500 QPS per shard replica. In a member-randomized A/B test, exploratory-query Precision@10 under the unchanged GR judge rises from 63.7% to 79.0% and navigational Precision@1 from 65.5% to 74.7%, with a blinded human evaluation independently confirming the Precision@10 gain.

A new generalization of the McKay conjecture for $p$-solvable groups

Let $P$ be a Sylow $p$-subgroup of a finite $p$-solvable group $G$, where $p$ is a prime. Using a normal $p$-series $\mathcal{N}$ of $G$, we introduce the notion of $(\mathcal{N},p)$-stable characters and prove that $G$ and ${\bf N}_G(P)$ have equal numbers of such characters, which gives a new generalization of the McKay conjecture for $p$-solvable groups. Also, we establish a canonical bijection between these characters in the case where $G$ has odd order. Our proofs depend heavily on the theory of self-stabilizing pairs founded by M. L. Lewis, as well as some results of $\pi$-special characters due to I. M. Isaacs.

Lifts of Brauer characters in characteristic two, II

In 2007, J. P. Cossey conjectured that if $G$ is a finite $p$-solvable group and $\varphi$ is an irreducible Brauer character of $G$ with vertex $Q$, then the number of lifts of $\varphi$ is at most $|Q:Q'|$. In this paper we revisited Cossey's conjecture for $p=2$ from the perspective of Navarro vertices and obtained a new way to count the number of lifts of $\varphi$. Some applications were given.

Counting lifts of irreducible Brauer characters

Let $p$ be an odd prime, and suppose that $G$ is a $p$-solvable group and $\varphi\in {\rm IBr}(G)$ has vertex $Q$. In 2011, Cossey, Lewis and Navarro proved that the number of lifts of $\varphi$ is at most $|Q:Q'|$ whenever $Q$ is normal in $G$. In this paper, we present an explicit description of the set of lifts of $\varphi$ with a given vertex pair $(Q,\delta)$ under a weaker condition on $Q$, and thus generalize their result.

Character triples and relative defect zero characters

Given a character triple $(G,N,\theta)$, which means that $G$ is a finite group with $N \vartriangleleft G$ and $\theta\in{\rm Irr}(N)$ is $G$-invariant, we introduce the notion of a $\pi$-quasi extension of $\theta$ to $G$ where $\pi$ is the set of primes dividing the order of the cohomology element $[\theta]_{G/N}\in H^2(G/N,\mathbb{C}^\times)$ associated with the character triple, and then establish the uniqueness of such an extension in the normalized case. As an application, we use the $\pi$-quasi extension of $\theta$ to construct a bijection from the set of $\pi$-defect zero characters of $G/N$ onto the set of relative $\pi$-defect zero characters of $G$ over $\theta$. Our results generalize the related theorems of M. Murai and of G. Navarro.

Weights for $\pi$-partial characters of $\pi$-separable groups

The aim of this paper is to confirm an inequality predicted by Isaacs and Navarro in 1995, which asserts that for any $\pi'$-subgroup $Q$ of a $\pi$-separable group $G$, the number of $\pi'$-weights of $G$ with $Q$ as the first component always exceeds that of irreducible $\pi$-partial characters of $G$ with $Q$ as their vertex. We also give some sufficient condition to guarantee that these two numbers are equal, and thereby strengthen their main theorem on the $\pi$-version of the Alperin weight conjecture.

Navarro vertices and lifts in solvable groups

Let $Q$ be a $p$-subgroup of a finite $p$-solvable group $G$, where $p$ is a prime, and suppose that $\delta$ is a linear character of $Q$ with the property that $\delta(x)=\delta(y)$ whenever $x,y\in Q$ are conjugate in $G$. In this situation, we show that restriction to $p$-regular elements defines a canonical bijection from the set of those irreducible ordinary characters of $G$ with Navarro vertex $(Q,\delta)$ onto the set of irreducible Brauer characters of $G$ with Green vertex $Q$. Also, we use this correspondence to examine the behavior of lifts of Brauer characters with respect to normal subgroups.

Lifts of Brauer characters in characteristic two

A conjecture raised by Cossey in 2007 asserts that if $G$ is a finite $p$-solvable group and $\varphi$ is an irreducible $p$-Brauer character of $G$ with vertex $Q$, then the number of lifts of $\varphi$ is at most $|Q:Q'|$. This conjecture is now known to be true in several situations for $p$ odd, but there has been little progress for $p$ even. The main obstacle appeared in characteristic two is that all the vertex pairs of a lift are neither linear nor conjugate. In this paper we show that if $\chi$ is a lift of an irreducible $2$-Brauer character in a solvable group, then $\chi$ has a linear Navarro vertex if and only if all the vertex pairs of $\chi$ are linear, and in that case all of the twisted vertices of $\chi$ are conjugate. Our result can also be used to study other lifting problems of Brauer characters in characteristic two. As an application, we prove a weaker form of Cossey's conjecture for $p=2$ "one vertex at a time".

The uniqueness of vertex pairs in $\pi$-separable groups

Let $G$ be a finite $\pi$-separable group, where $\pi$ is a set of primes, and let $\chi$ be an irreducible complex character that is a $\pi$-lift of some $\pi$-partial character of $G$.It was proved by Cossey and Lewis that all of the vertex pairs for $\chi$ are linear and conjugate in $G$ if $2\in\pi$, but the result can fail for $2\notin\pi$. In this paper we introduce the notion of the twisted vertices in the case where $2\notin\pi$, and establish the uniqueness for linear twisted vertices under the conditions that either $\chi$ is an $\mathcal N$-lift for a $\pi$-chain $\mathcal N$ of $G$ or it has a linear Navarro vertex, thus answering a question proposed by them.

ELEVATER: A Benchmark and Toolkit for Evaluating Language-Augmented Visual Models

Learning visual representations from natural language supervision has recently shown great promise in a number of pioneering works. In general, these language-augmented visual models demonstrate strong transferability to a variety of datasets and tasks. However, it remains challenging to evaluate the transferablity of these models due to the lack of easy-to-use evaluation toolkits and public benchmarks. To tackle this, we build ELEVATER (Evaluation of Language-augmented Visual Task-level Transfer), the first benchmark and toolkit for evaluating(pre-trained) language-augmented visual models. ELEVATER is composed of three components. (i) Datasets. As downstream evaluation suites, it consists of 20 image classification datasets and 35 object detection datasets, each of which is augmented with external knowledge. (ii) Toolkit. An automatic hyper-parameter tuning toolkit is developed to facilitate model evaluation on downstream tasks. (iii) Metrics. A variety of evaluation metrics are used to measure sample-efficiency (zero-shot and few-shot) and parameter-efficiency (linear probing and full model fine-tuning). ELEVATER is a platform for Computer Vision in the Wild (CVinW), and is publicly released at at https://computer-vision-in-the-wild.github.io/ELEVATER/

Sputtered Spontaneously Nano-porous VO2-based Films via PTFE Self-Template: Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Induced Robust Optical Performance for Solar Glazing Application

The PTFE (Teflon) has been selected as the self-template structural material in preparation of VO2 films using reactive magnetron sputtering systems and post annealing progress. Spontaneous random nano-porous structures of VO2 films growing on quartz glasses have been deliberately established via bottom-up processing through this novel and facile approach. The nano-porous VO2 films exhibit an excellent optical performance based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), with ultrahigh luminous transmittance (Tlum) up to 78.0% and the promoted solar modulation ability (ΔTsol) of 14.1%. Meanwhile, the ingenious microstructure of film provides an antireflection function from multiple perspectives in visible light, with the potential of the windshield on vehicles for smart solar modulation. The nano-porous films expand the practical application of thermochromic VO2 to a fire-new field, breaking the optical performance envelope of single-layer dense VO2 film away, and offering a universal method to prepare homogeneous nano-porous structures for thin films.

Towards Commercializing Vanadium Dioxide Films: Investigation of the Impact of Different Interface on the Deterioration Process for Largely Extended Service Life

Long term stability is the most pressing issue that impedes commercialization of Vanadium Dioxide (VO2) based functional films, which show a gradual loss of relative phase transition performance, especially in humid conditions when serving as smart windows. Here, we investigated the impact of different interface on the deterioration process of VO2 films and proposed a novel encapsulation structure for largely extended service life. Hydrophobic and stable hafnium dioxide (HfO2) layers have been incorporated with VO2 films for encapsulated surfaces and cross sections. With modified thickness and structure of HfO2 layers, the degradation process of VO2 can be effectively suppressed. The proposed films can retain stable phase transition performances under high relative humidity (90%) and temperature (60 Celsius) over 100 days, which is equal to about 16 years in the real environment. Improving the stability of VO2 materials is a necessary step towards commercializing production of high performance films for long term use.

Hyperbolic Modules of Finite Group Algebras over Finite Fields of Characteristic Two

Let $G$ be a finite group and let $F$ be a finite field of characteristic $2$. We introduce \emph{$F$-special subgroups} and \emph{$F$-special elements} of $G$. In the case where $F$ contains a $p$th primitive root of unity for each odd prime $p$ dividing the order of $G$ (e.g. it is the case once $F$ is a splitting field for all subgroups of $G$), the $F$-special elements of $G$ coincide with real elements of odd order. We prove that a symmetric $FG$-module $V$ is hyperbolic if and only if the restriction $V_D$ of $V$ to every $F$-special subgroup $D$ of $G$ is hyperbolic, and also, if and only if the characteristic polynomial on $V$ defined by every $F$-special element of $G$ is a square of a polynomial over $F$. Some immediate applications to characters, self-dual codes and Witt groups are given.

Direct evidence of tungsten clustering in W$_{\text{0.02}}$V$_{\text{0.98}}$O$_{\text{2}}$ thin films and its effect on the metal-to-insulator transition

Substitutional tungsten doping of VO$_{\text{2}}$ thin films and its effect on the metal-to-insulator transition are investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) and ab-initio simulations. The W$_{\text{0.02}}$V$_{\text{0.98}}$O$_{\text{2}}$ thin films deposited on (001) sapphire are studied in both planar and transverse geometries. The tungsten atoms are distinguishable from the V atoms in the Z-sensitive high angle annular dark field (HAADF) STEM image and their nature is further confirmed by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The W dopants are found to substitute in the V sites and form local clusters at first neighbour, preferentially along the <010>$_{\text{R}}$ directions. Ab-initio modeling for this 2 at.% W doped VO$_{\text{2}}$ confirms the experimentally found W clustering mechanism to be the most stable substitutional configuration and it demonstrates that the binding energy of such cluster is 0.18 eV. Driving forces for short range ordering are also obtained along the <011>$_{\text{R}}$ and <110>$_{\text{R}}$ directions. Strong energetic penalty is found for the <001>$_{\text{R}}$ direction. Simulations indicate that the clustering helps in stabilizing the tetragonal structure, while a diluted W dopant induces more structural distortion and V-V pairing. This suggests that the clustering mechanism plays a critical role in the transition temperature evolution with the W dopants.

Ab-initio calculations of the Optical band-gap of TiO2 thin films

Titanium dioxide has been extensively studied in recent decades for its important photocatalytic application in environmental purification. The search for a method to narrow the optical band-gap of TiO2 plays a key role for enhancing its photocatalytic application. The optical band gap of epitaxial rutile and anatase TiO2 thin films deposited by helicon magnetron sputtering on sapphire and on SrTiO3 substrates was correlated to the lattice constants estimated from HRTEM images and SAED. The optical band-gap of 3.03 eV for bulk-rutile increased for the thin films to 3.37 on sapphire. The band gap of 3.20 eV for bulk-anatase increases to 3.51 on SrTiO3. In order to interpret the optical band gap expansion for both phases, ab-initio calculations were performed using the Vienna ab-initio software. The calculations for rutile as well anatase show an almost linear increase of the band gap width with decreasing volume or increasing lattice constant a. The calculated band gap fits well with the experimental values. The conclusion from these calculations is, in order to achieve a smaller band-gap for both, rutile or anatase, the lattice constants c has to be compressed, and a has to be expanded.
