1100 days in the life of the supernova 2018ibb -- The best pair-instability supernova candidate, to date

Abridged - Stars with ZAMS masses between 140 and $260 M_\odot$ are thought to explode as pair-instability supernovae (PISNe). During their thermonuclear runaway, PISNe can produce up to several tens of solar masses of radioactive nickel, resulting in luminous transients similar to some superluminous supernovae (SLSNe). Yet, no unambiguous PISN has been discovered so far. SN2018ibb is a H-poor SLSN at $z=0.166$ that evolves extremely slowly compared to the hundreds of known SLSNe. Between mid 2018 and early 2022, we monitored its photometric and spectroscopic evolution from the UV to the NIR with 2-10m class telescopes. SN2018ibb radiated $>3\times10^{51} \rm erg$ during its evolution, and its bolometric light curve reached $>2\times10^{44} \rm erg\,s^{-1}$ at peak. The long-lasting rise of $>93$ rest-frame days implies a long diffusion time, which requires a very high total ejected mass. The PISN mechanism naturally provides both the energy source ($^{56}$Ni) and the long diffusion time. Theoretical models of PISNe make clear predictions for their photometric and spectroscopic properties. SN2018ibb complies with most tests on the light curves, nebular spectra and host galaxy, potentially all tests with the interpretation we propose. Both the light curve and the spectra require 25-44 $M_\odot$ of freshly nucleosynthesised $^{56}$Ni, pointing to the explosion of a metal-poor star with a He-core mass of 120-130 $M_\odot$ at the time of death. This interpretation is also supported by the tentative detection of [Co II]$λ$1.025$μ$m, which has never been observed in any other PISN candidate or SLSN before. Powering by a central engine, such as a magnetar or a black hole, can be excluded with high confidence. This makes SN2018ibb by far the best candidate for being a PISN, to date.

Direct detection of supernova progenitor stars with ZTF and LSST

The direct detection of core-collapse supernova (SN) progenitor stars is a powerful way of probing the last stages of stellar evolution. However, detections in archival Hubble Space Telescope images are limited to about one per year. Here, we explore whether we can increase the detection rate by using data from ground-based wide-field surveys. Due to crowding and atmospheric blurring, progenitor stars can typically not be identified in pre-explosion images alone. Instead, we combine many pre-SN and late-time images to search for the disappearance of the progenitor star. As a proof of concept, we implement our search for ZTF data. For a few hundred images, we achieve limiting magnitudes of about 23 mag in the g and r band. However, no progenitor stars or long-lived outbursts are detected for 29 SNe within z<0.01, and the ZTF limits are typically several magnitudes less constraining than detected progenitors in the literature. Next, we estimate progenitor detection rates for the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) with the Vera C. Rubin telescope by simulating a population of nearby SNe. The background from bright host galaxies reduces the nominal LSST sensitivity by, on average, 0.4 mag. Over the ten-year survey, we expect the detection of about 50 red supergiant progenitors and several yellow and blue supergiants. The progenitors of SNe Ib and Ic are detectable if they are brighter than -4.7 mag or -4.0 mag in the LSST i band, respectively. In addition, we expect the detection of hundreds of pre-SN outbursts depending on their brightness and duration.

Minutes-duration Optical Flares with Supernova Luminosities

In recent years, certain luminous extragalactic optical transients have been observed to last only a few days. Their short observed duration implies a different powering mechanism from the most common luminous extragalactic transients (supernovae) whose timescale is weeks. Some short-duration transients, most notably AT2018cow, display blue optical colours and bright radio and X-ray emission. Several AT2018cow-like transients have shown hints of a long-lived embedded energy source, such as X-ray variability, prolonged ultraviolet emission, a tentative X-ray quasiperiodic oscillation, and large energies coupled to fast (but subrelativistic) radio-emitting ejecta. Here we report observations of minutes-duration optical flares in the aftermath of an AT2018cow-like transient, AT2022tsd (the "Tasmanian Devil"). The flares occur over a period of months, are highly energetic, and are likely nonthermal, implying that they arise from a near-relativistic outflow or jet. Our observations confirm that in some AT2018cow-like transients the embedded energy source is a compact object, either a magnetar or an accreting black hole.

A Diffusion Weighted Graph Framework for New Intent Discovery

New Intent Discovery (NID) aims to recognize both new and known intents from unlabeled data with the aid of limited labeled data containing only known intents. Without considering structure relationships between samples, previous methods generate noisy supervisory signals which cannot strike a balance between quantity and quality, hindering the formation of new intent clusters and effective transfer of the pre-training knowledge. To mitigate this limitation, we propose a novel Diffusion Weighted Graph Framework (DWGF) to capture both semantic similarities and structure relationships inherent in data, enabling more sufficient and reliable supervisory signals. Specifically, for each sample, we diffuse neighborhood relationships along semantic paths guided by the nearest neighbors for multiple hops to characterize its local structure discriminately. Then, we sample its positive keys and weigh them based on semantic similarities and local structures for contrastive learning. During inference, we further propose Graph Smoothing Filter (GSF) to explicitly utilize the structure relationships to filter high-frequency noise embodied in semantically ambiguous samples on the cluster boundary. Extensive experiments show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art models on all evaluation metrics across multiple benchmark datasets. Code and data are available at https://github.com/yibai-shi/DWGF.

DNA: Denoised Neighborhood Aggregation for Fine-grained Category Discovery

Discovering fine-grained categories from coarsely labeled data is a practical and challenging task, which can bridge the gap between the demand for fine-grained analysis and the high annotation cost. Previous works mainly focus on instance-level discrimination to learn low-level features, but ignore semantic similarities between data, which may prevent these models learning compact cluster representations. In this paper, we propose Denoised Neighborhood Aggregation (DNA), a self-supervised framework that encodes semantic structures of data into the embedding space. Specifically, we retrieve k-nearest neighbors of a query as its positive keys to capture semantic similarities between data and then aggregate information from the neighbors to learn compact cluster representations, which can make fine-grained categories more separatable. However, the retrieved neighbors can be noisy and contain many false-positive keys, which can degrade the quality of learned embeddings. To cope with this challenge, we propose three principles to filter out these false neighbors for better representation learning. Furthermore, we theoretically justify that the learning objective of our framework is equivalent to a clustering loss, which can capture semantic similarities between data to form compact fine-grained clusters. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets show that our method can retrieve more accurate neighbors (21.31% accuracy improvement) and outperform state-of-the-art models by a large margin (average 9.96% improvement on three metrics). Our code and data are available at https://github.com/Lackel/DNA.

A 12.4 day periodicity in a close binary system after a supernova

Neutron stars and stellar-mass black holes are the remnants of massive star explosions. Most massive stars reside in close binary systems, and the interplay between the companion star and the newly formed compact object has been theoretically explored, but signatures for binarity or evidence for the formation of a compact object during a supernova explosion are still lacking. Here we report a stripped-envelope supernova, SN 2022jli, which shows 12.4-day periodic undulations during the declining light curve. Narrow H$α$ emission is detected in late-time spectra with concordant periodic velocity shifts, likely arising from hydrogen gas stripped from a companion and accreted onto the compact remnant. A new Fermi/LAT $γ$-ray source is temporally and positionally consistent with SN 2022jli. The observed properties of SN 2022jli, including periodic undulations in the optical light curve, coherent H$α$ emission shifting, and evidence for association with a $γ$-ray source, point to the explosion of a massive star in a binary system leaving behind a bound compact remnant. Mass accretion from the companion star onto the compact object powers the light curve of the supernova and generates the $γ$-ray emission.

SN 2022oqm -- a Ca-rich explosion of a compact progenitor embedded in C/O circumstellar material

We present the discovery and analysis of SN\,2022oqm, a Type Ic supernova (SN) detected $<1$\,day after explosion. The SN rises to a blue and short-lived (2\,days) initial peak. Early-time spectral observations of SN\,2022oqm show a hot (40,000\,K) continuum with high-ionization C and O absorption features at velocities of 4000\,km\,s$^{-1}$, while its photospheric radius expands at 20,000\,\kms, indicating a pre-existing distribution of expanding C/O material. After $\sim2.5$\,days, both the spectrum and light curves evolve into those of a typical SN Ic, with line velocities of $\sim10,000$\,km\,s$^{-1}$, in agreement with the photospheric radius evolution. The optical light curves reach a second peak at $t\approx15$\,days. By $t=60$\,days, the spectrum of \oqm\ becomes nearly nebular, displaying strong \ion{Ca}{2} and [\ion{Ca}{2}] emission with no detectable [\ion{O}{1}], marking this event as Ca-rich. The early behavior can be explained by $10^{-3}$\,\msun\ of optically thin circumstellar material (CSM) surrounding either (1) a massive compact progenitor such as a Wolf-Rayet star, (2) a massive stripped progenitor with an extended envelope, or (3) a binary system with a white dwarf. We propose that the early-time light curve is powered by both interaction of the ejecta with the optically thin CSM and shock cooling (in the massive-star scenario). The observations can be explained by CSM that is optically thick to X-ray photons, is optically thick in the lines as seen in the spectra, and is optically thin to visible-light continuum photons that come either from downscattered X-rays or from the shock-heated ejecta. Calculations show that this scenario is self-consistent.

Large deviations of conservative stochastic partial differential equations

In this paper, we establish a large deviation principle for the conservative stochastic partial differential equations, whose solutions are related to stochastic differential equations with interaction. The weak convergence method and the contraction principle in the theory of large deviations play an important role.

Environmental dependence of Type IIn supernova properties

Type IIn supernovae occur when stellar explosions are surrounded by dense hydrogen-rich circumstellar matter. The dense circumstellar matter is likely formed by extreme mass loss from their progenitors shortly before they explode. The nature of Type IIn supernova progenitors and the mass-loss mechanism forming the dense circumstellar matter are still unknown. In this work, we investigate if there are any correlations between Type IIn supernova properties and their local environments. We use Type IIn supernovae with well-observed light-curves and host-galaxy integral field spectroscopic data so that we can estimate both supernova and environmental properties. We find that Type IIn supernovae with a higher peak luminosity tend to occur in environments with lower metallicity and/or younger stellar populations. The circumstellar matter density around Type IIn supernovae is not significantly correlated with metallicity, so the mass-loss mechanism forming the dense circumstellar matter around Type IIn supernovae might be insensitive to metallicity.

Regulated Polarization Degree of Upconversion Luminescence and Multiple Anti-Counterfeit Applications

Polarized upconversion luminescence (PUCL) of lanthanide (Ln3+) ions has been widely used in single particle tracking, microfluidics detection, three-dimensional displays, and so on. However, no effective strategy has been developed for modulating PUCL. Here, we report a strategy to regulate PUCL in Ho3+-doped NaYF4 single nanorods based on the number of upconversion photons. By constructing a multiphoton upconversion system for Ho3+, we regulate the degree of polarization (DOP) of PUCL from 0.6 for two-photon luminescence to 0.929 for three-photon upconversion luminescence (UCL). Furthermore, our strategy is verified by cross-relaxation between Ho3+ and Yb3+, excitation wavelength, excitation power density, and local site symmetry. And this regulation strategy of PUCL has also been achieved in Tm3+, where DOP is ranged from 0.233 for two-photon luminescence to 0.925 for four-photon UCL. Besides, multi-dimensional anti-counterfeiting display has been explored with PUCL. This work provides an effective strategy for the regulation of PUCL and also provides more opportunities for the development of polarization display, optical encoding, anti-counterfeiting, and integrated optical devices.

Hybrid approximation approach to generation of atomic squeezing with quantum nondemolition measurements

We analyze a scheme that uses quantum nondemolition measurements to induce squeezing of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well trap. In a previous paper [Ilo-Okeke et al. Phys. Rev. A \textbf{104}, 053324 (2021)], we introduced a model to solve exactly the wavefunction for all atom-light interaction times. Here, we perform approximations for the short interaction time regime, which is relevant for producing squeezing. Our approach uses a Holstein-Primakoff approximation for the atoms while we treat the light variables exactly. It allows us to show that the measurement induces correlations within the condensate, which manifest in the state of the condensate as a superposition of even parity states. In the long interaction time regime, our methods allow us to identify the mechanism for loss of correlation. We derive simple expressions for the variances of atomic spin variables conditioned on the measurement outcome. We find that the results agree with the exact solution in the short interaction time regime. Additionally, we show that the expressions are the sum of the variances of the atoms and the measurement. Beyond the short interaction time regime, our scheme agrees qualitatively with the exact solution for the spin variable that couples to light.

Atomic-scale Mapping Unravel Anisotropic Dissolution Behaviors of Gibbsite Nanosheets

This study examines the anisotropic dissolution of the basal plane gibbsite (γ-Al(OH)3) nanoplates in sodium hydroxide solution using in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In the surface-reaction controlled regime, in situ AFM measurements reveal anisotropic dissolution of hillocks and etch pits on the gibbsite basal plane, with preferred dissolution directions alternating between layers. The mirror-symmetric pattern of dissolution preference between adjacent gibbsite aluminum hydroxide sheet, observed along the crystallographic a-c plane, results from the matching symmetry between the structures of the adjacent (001) and (002) crystal planes. Consequently, the overall dissolution rate of gibbsite nanoplates exhibits crystallographic a-c plane symmetry, as the rate of parallel steps is governed by the slower ones. DFT calculations suggest that the anisotropic dissolution is partially due to the orientation and strength of Al-OH-Al linkages pair within gibbsite surface structure. These findings offer a comprehensive understanding of anisotropic dissolution behavior of gibbsite and illuminate the mechanisms behind preferential dissolution.

Large deviation principles and Malliavin derivative for mean reflected stochastic differential equations

In this paper, we consider a class of reflected stochastic differential equations for which the constraint is not on the paths of the solution but on its law. We establish a small noise large deviation principle, a large deviation for short time and the Malliavin derivative. To prove large deviation principles, a sufficient condition for the weak convergence method, which is suitable for Mckean-Vlasov stochastic differential equation, plays an important role.

Machine learning assisted phase and size-controlled synthesis of iron oxides

The controllable synthesis of iron oxides particles is a critical issue for materials science, energy storage, biomedical applications, environmental science, and earth science. However, synthesis of iron oxides with desired phase and size are still a time-consuming and trial-and-error process. This study presents solutions for two fundamental challenges in materials synthesis: predicting the outcome of a synthesis from specified reaction parameters and correlating sets of parameters to obtain products with desired outcomes. Four machine learning algorithms, including random forest, logistic regression, support vector machine, and k-nearest neighbor, were trained to predict the phase and particle size of iron oxide based on experimental conditions. Among the models, random forest exhibited the best performance, achieving 96% and 81% accuracy when predicting the phase and size of iron oxides in the test dataset. Premutation feature importance analysis shows that most models (except logistic regression) rely on known features such as precursor concentration, pH, and temperature to predict the phases from synthesis conditions. The robustness of the random forest models was further verified by comparing prediction and experimental results based on 24 randomly generated methods in additive and non-additive systems not included in the datasets. The predictions of product phase and particle size from the models are in good agreement with the experimental results. Additionally, a searching and ranking algorithm was developed to recommend potential synthesis parameters for obtaining iron oxide products with desired phase and particle size from previous studies in the dataset.

Generalized Category Discovery with Decoupled Prototypical Network

Generalized Category Discovery (GCD) aims to recognize both known and novel categories from a set of unlabeled data, based on another dataset labeled with only known categories. Without considering differences between known and novel categories, current methods learn about them in a coupled manner, which can hurt model's generalization and discriminative ability. Furthermore, the coupled training approach prevents these models transferring category-specific knowledge explicitly from labeled data to unlabeled data, which can lose high-level semantic information and impair model performance. To mitigate above limitations, we present a novel model called Decoupled Prototypical Network (DPN). By formulating a bipartite matching problem for category prototypes, DPN can not only decouple known and novel categories to achieve different training targets effectively, but also align known categories in labeled and unlabeled data to transfer category-specific knowledge explicitly and capture high-level semantics. Furthermore, DPN can learn more discriminative features for both known and novel categories through our proposed Semantic-aware Prototypical Learning (SPL). Besides capturing meaningful semantic information, SPL can also alleviate the noise of hard pseudo labels through semantic-weighted soft assignment. Extensive experiments show that DPN outperforms state-of-the-art models by a large margin on all evaluation metrics across multiple benchmark datasets. Code and data are available at https://github.com/Lackel/DPN.

DAA: A Delta Age AdaIN operation for age estimation via binary code transformer

Naked eye recognition of age is usually based on comparison with the age of others. However, this idea is ignored by computer tasks because it is difficult to obtain representative contrast images of each age. Inspired by the transfer learning, we designed the Delta Age AdaIN (DAA) operation to obtain the feature difference with each age, which obtains the style map of each age through the learned values representing the mean and standard deviation. We let the input of transfer learning as the binary code of age natural number to obtain continuous age feature information. The learned two groups of values in Binary code mapping are corresponding to the mean and standard deviation of the comparison ages. In summary, our method consists of four parts: FaceEncoder, DAA operation, Binary code mapping, and AgeDecoder modules. After getting the delta age via AgeDecoder, we take the average value of all comparison ages and delta ages as the predicted age. Compared with state-of-the-art methods, our method achieves better performance with fewer parameters on multiple facial age datasets.

SN2017egm: A Helium-rich Superluminous Supernova with Multiple Bumps in the Light Curves

When discovered, SN~2017egm was the closest (redshift $z=0.03$) hydrogen-poor superluminous supernova (SLSN-I) and a rare case that exploded in a massive and metal-rich galaxy. Thus, it has since been extensively observed and studied. We report spectroscopic data showing strong emission at around He~I $λ$10,830 and four He~I absorption lines in the optical. Consequently, we classify SN~2017egm as a member of an emerging population of helium-rich SLSNe-I (i.e., SLSNe-Ib). We also present our late-time photometric observations. By combining them with archival data, we analyze high-cadence ultra-violet, optical, and near-infrared light curves spanning from early pre-peak ($\sim -20\,d$) to late phases ($\sim +300\,d$). We obtain its most complete bolometric light curve, in which multiple bumps are identified. None of the previously proposed models can satisfactorily explain all main light-curve features, while multiple interactions between the ejecta and circumstellar material (CSM) may explain the undulating features. The prominent infrared excess with a blackbody luminosity of $10^7$--$10^8\,L_{sun}$ detected in SN~2017egm could originate from the emission of either an echo of a pre-existing dust shell, or newly-formed dust, offering an additional piece of evidence supporting the ejecta-CSM interaction model. Moreover, our analysis of deep $Chandra$ observations yields the tightest-ever constraint on the X-ray emission of an SLSN-I, amounting to an X-ray-to-optical luminosity ratio $\lesssim 10^{-3}$ at late phases ($\sim100-200\,d$), which could help explore its close environment and central engine.

Measurement operator for quantum nondemolition measurements

We derive a measurement operator corresponding to a quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of an atomic ensemble. The quantum measurement operator takes the form of a positive operator valued measure (POVM) and is valid for arbitrary interaction times, initial coherent state amplitudes, and final photon measurement outcomes. We analyze the dependence on various parameters and show that the effect of the QND measurement for short interaction times is to apply a Gaussian modulation of the initial state wavefunction. We derive approximate expressions for the POVM in various limits, such as the short interaction time regime and projective measurement limit. Several examples are shown which shows how spin squeezing and Schrodinger cat states can be generated using the measurement.
