A vacuum problem for multidimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosity coefficients

Local solutions of the multidimensional Navier-Stokes equations for isentropic compressible flow are constructed with spherically symmetric initial data between a solid core and a free boundary connected to a surrounding vacuum state. The viscosity coefficients $λ, μ$ are proportional to $ρ^θ}$, $0<θ<γ$, where $ρ$ is the density and $γ>1$ is the physical constant of polytropic fluid. It is also proved that no vacuum develops between the solid core and the free boundary, and the free boundary expands with finite speed.

Abrupt boundaries of intermediate phases and space filling in oxide glasses

Modulated DSC measurements on bulk (Na2O)x(GeO2)1-x glasses show a sharp reversibility window in the 14% < x < 19% soda range, which correlates well with a broad global minimum in molar volumes. Raman and IR reflectance TO and LO mode frequencies exhibit anomalies between xc(1) = 14% (stress transition) and xc(2) = 19% (rigidity transition), with optical elasticity power-laws confirming the nature of the transitions . Birefringence measurements dramatize the macroscopically stress-free nature of the Intermediate Phase in the reversibility window.

Heavy Quarks on Anisotropic Lattices: The Charmonium Spectrum

We present results for the mass spectrum of $c{\bar c}$ mesons simulated on anisotropic lattices where the temporal spacing $a_t$ is only half of the spatial spacing $a_s$. The lattice QCD action is the Wilson gauge action plus the clover-improved Wilson fermion action. The two clover coefficients on an anisotropic lattice are estimated using mean links in Landau gauge. The bare velocity of light $ν_t$ has been tuned to keep the anisotropic, heavy-quark Wilson action relativistic. Local meson operators and three box sources are used in obtaining clear statistics for the lowest lying and first excited charmonium states of $^1S_0$, $^3S_1$, $^1P_1$, $^3P_0$ and $^3P_1$. The continuum limit is discussed by extrapolating from quenched simulations at four lattice spacings in the range 0.1 - 0.3 fm. Results are compared with the observed values in nature and other lattice approaches. Finite volume effects and dispersion relations are checked.

Toward the Chiral Limit of QCD: Quenched and Dynamical Domain Wall Fermions

A serious difficulty in conventional lattice field theory calculations is the coupling between the chiral and continuum limits. With both staggered and Wilson fermions, the chiral limit cannot be realized without first taking the limit of vanishing lattice spacing. In this talk, we report on extensive studies of the domain wall formulation of lattice fermions, which avoids this difficulty at the expense of requiring that fermion propagators be computed in five dimensions. A variety of results will be described for quenched and dynamical simulations at both zero and finite temperature. Conclusions about the benefits of this new method and some new physical results will be presented. These results were obtained on the QCDSP machines recently put into operation at Columbia and the RIKEN Brookhaven Research Center.

The domain wall fermion chiral condensate in quenched QCD

We examine the chiral limit of domain wall fermions in quenched QCD. One expects that in a quenched simulation, exact fermion zero modes will give a divergent, 1/m behavior in the chiral condensate for sufficiently small valence quark masses. Unlike other fermion formulations, domain wall fermions clearly demonstrate this behavior.

Status of the QCDSP project

We describe the completed 8,192-node, 0.4Tflops machine at Columbia as well as the 12,288-node, 0.6Tflops machine assembled at the RIKEN Brookhaven Research Center. Present performance as well as our experience in commissioning these large machines is presented. We outline our on-going physics program and explain how the configuration of the machine is varied to support a wide range of lattice QCD problems, requiring a variety of machine sizes. Finally a brief discussion is given of future prospects for large-scale lattice QCD machines.

QCDSP - A status report

The QCDSP machine at Columbia University has grown to 2,048 nodes achieving a peak speed of 100 Gigaflops. Software for quenched and Hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) evolution schemes has been developed for staggered fermions, with support for Wilson and clover fermions under development. We provide an overview of the runtime environment, the current status of the QCDSP construction program and preliminary results not presented elsewhere in these proceedings.
