On the Ca-strong 1991bg-like type Ia supernova 2016hnk: evidence for a Chandrasekhar-mass explosion

We present a comprehensive dataset of optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of type~Ia supernova (SN) 2016hnk, combined with integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of its host galaxy, MCG -01-06-070, and nearby environment. Properties of the SN local environment are characterized by means of single stellar population synthesis applied to IFS observations taken two years after the SN exploded. SN 2016hnk spectra are compared to other 1991bg-like SNe Ia, 2002es-like SNe Ia, and Ca-rich transients. In addition, abundance stratification modelling is used to identify the various spectral features in the early phase spectral sequence and the dataset is also compared to a modified non-LTE model previously produced for the sublumnious SN 1999by. SN 2016hnk is consistent with being a sub-luminous (M$_{\rm B}=-16.7$ mag, s$_{\rm BV}$=0.43$\pm$0.03), highly reddened object. IFS of its host galaxy reveals both a significant amount of dust at the SN location, as well as residual star formation and a high proportion of old stellar populations in the local environment compared to other locations in the galaxy, which favours an old progenitor for SN 2016hnk. Inspection of a nebular spectrum obtained one year after maximum contains two narrow emission lines attributed to the forbidden [Ca II] $λλ$7291,7324 doublet with a Doppler shift of 700 km s$^{-1}$. Based on various observational diagnostics, we argue that the progenitor of SN 2016hnk was likely a near Chandrasekhar-mass ($M_{\rm Ch}$) carbon-oxygen white dwarf that produced 0.108 $M_\odot$ of $^{56}$Ni. Our modeling suggests that the narrow [Ca II] features observed in the nebular spectrum are associated with $^{48}$Ca from electron capture during the explosion, which is expected to occur only in white dwarfs that explode near or at the $M_{\rm Ch}$ limit.

ASASSN-15pz: Revealing Significant Photometric Diversity among 2009dc-like, Peculiar SNe Ia

We report comprehensive multi-wavelength observations of a peculiar Type Ia-like supernova ("SN Ia-pec") ASASSN-15pz. ASASSN-15pz is a spectroscopic "twin" of SN 2009dc, a so-called "Super-Chandrasekhar-mass" SN, throughout its evolution, but it has a peak luminosity M_B,peak = -19.69 +/- 0.12 mag that is \approx 0.6 mag dimmer and comparable to the SN 1991T sub-class of SNe Ia at the luminous end of the normal width-luminosity relation. The synthesized Ni56 mass of M_Ni56 = 1.13 +/- 0.14 M_sun is also substantially less than that found for several 2009dc-like SNe. Previous well-studied 2009dc-like SNe have generally suffered from large and uncertain amounts of host-galaxy extinction, which is negligible for ASASSN-15pz. Based on the color of ASASSN-15pz, we estimate a host extinction for SN 2009dc of E(B-V)_host=0.12 mag and confirm its high luminosity (M_B, peak[2009dc] \approx -20.3 mag). The 2009dc-like SN population, which represents ~1% of SNe Ia, exhibits a range of peak luminosities, and do not fit onto the tight width-luminosity relation. Their optical light curves also show significant diversity of late-time (>~ 50 days) decline rates. The nebular-phase spectra provide powerful diagnostics to identify the 2009dc-like events as a distinct class of SNe Ia. We suggest referring to these sources using the phenomenology-based "2009dc-like SN Ia-pec" instead of "Super-Chandrasekhar SN Ia," which is based on an uncertain theoretical interpretation.

Generalized Expected Discounted Penalty Function at General Drawdown for Lévy Risk Processes

This paper considers an insurance surplus process modeled by a spectrally negative Lévy process. Instead of the time of ruin in the traditional setting, we apply the time of drawdown as the risk indicator in this paper. We study the joint distribution of the time of drawdown, the running maximum at drawdown, the last minimum before drawdown, the surplus before drawdown and the surplus at drawdown (may not be deficit in this case), which generalizes the known results on the classical expected discounted penalty function in Gerber and Shiu (1998). The results have semi-explicit expressions in terms of the $q$-scale functions and the Lévy measure associated with the Lévy process. As applications, the obtained result is applied to recover results in the literature and to obtain new results for the Gerber-Shiu function at ruin for risk processes embedded with a loss-carry-forward taxation system or a barrier dividend strategy. Moreover, numerical examples are provided to illustrate the results.

The Evolution of Luminous Red Nova AT 2017jfs in NGC 4470

We present the results of our photometric and spectroscopic follow-up of the intermediate-luminosity optical transient AT 2017jfs. At peak, the object reaches an absolute magnitude of Mg=-15.46+-0.15 mag and a bolometric luminosity of 5.5x10^41 erg/s. Its light curve has the double-peak shape typical of Luminous Red Novae (LRNe), with a narrow first peak bright in the blue bands, while the second peak is longer lasting and more luminous in the red and near-infrared (NIR) bands. During the first peak, the spectrum shows a blue continuum with narrow emission lines of H and Fe II. During the second peak, the spectrum becomes cooler, resembling that of a K-type star, and the emission lines are replaced by a forest of narrow lines in absorption. About 5 months later, while the optical light curves are characterized by a fast linear decline, the NIR ones show a moderate rebrightening, observed until the transient disappeared in solar conjunction. At these late epochs, the spectrum becomes reminiscent of that of M-type stars, with prominent molecular absorption bands. The late-time properties suggest the formation of some dust in the expanding common envelope or an IR echo from foreground pre-existing dust. We propose that the object is a common-envelope transient, possibly the outcome of a merging event in a massive binary, similar to NGC4490-2011OT1.

Strongly Bipolar Inner Ejecta of the Normal Type IIP Supernova ASASSN-16at

We report distinctly double-peakedH-alpha and H-beta emission lines in the late-time, nebular-phase spectra (>~200 d) of the otherwise normal at early phases (<~ 100 d) Type IIP supernova ASASSN-16at (SN 2016X). Such distinctly double-peaked nebular Balmer lines have never been observed for a Type II SN. The nebular-phase Balmer emission is driven by the radioactive Co56 decay, so the observed line-profile bifurcation suggests a strong bipolarity in the Ni56 distribution or in the line-forming region of the inner ejecta. The strongly bifurcated blue- and red-shifted peaks are separated by ~3x10^3 km/s and are roughly symmetrically positioned with respect to the host-galaxy rest frame, implying that the inner ejecta are composed of two almost detached blobs. The red peak progressively weakens relative to the blue peak, and disappears in the 740 d spectrum. One possible reason for the line-ratio evolution is increasing differential extinction from continuous formation of dust within the envelope, which is also supported by the near-infrared flux excess that develops after ~100 d.

H-$α$ emission in the nebular spectrum of the Type Ia supernova ASASSN-18tb

As part of the 100IAS survey, a program aimed to obtain nebular-phase spectra for a volume-limited and homogeneous sample of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), we observed ASASSN-18tb (SN 2018fhw) at 139 days past maximum light. ASASSN-18tb was a fast-declining, sub-luminous event that fits well within the observed photometric and spectroscopic distributions of the SN Ia population. We detect a prominent H$α$ emission line of $L_{{\rm H}α}=2.2\pm0.2\times10^{38}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ with FWHM $\approx1100$ km s$^{-1}$ in the nebular-phase spectrum of this SN Ia. High luminosity H$α$ emission ($L_{{\rm H}α}\gtrsim 10^{40}$ ergs~s$^{-1}$) has previously been discovered in a rare class of SNe Ia-like objects showing CSM interactions (SNe Ia-CSM). They predominantly belong to over-luminous ($M_{\rm max}<-19$ mag in optical) 1991T-like SNe Ia and are exclusively found in star-forming galaxies. By contrast, ASASSN-18tb is a sub-luminous SN Ia ($M_{B, {\rm max}}\sim -17.7$ mag) found in an early-type galaxy dominated by old stellar populations. We discuss possible origins for the observed hydrogen. Out of 75 SNe Ia for which we have so far obtained nebular spectra in 100IAS, no other SN shows a $\sim 1000 \,{\rm km s^{-1}}$ H$α$ emission line with comparable line luminosity as ASASSN-18tb, emphasizing the rarity of such emission in the nebular phase. Based on preliminary results from our survey, the rate for ASASSN-18tb-like nebular H$α$ emission could be as high as $\sim 10\%$ level among sub-luminous SNe Ia.

Seeing Double: ASASSN-18bt Exhibits a Two-Component Rise in the Early-Time K2 Light Curve

On 2018 Feb. 4.41, the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) discovered ASASSN-18bt in the K2 Campaign 16 field. With a redshift of z=0.01098 and a peak apparent magnitude of B_{max}=14.31, ASASSN-18bt is the nearest and brightest SNe Ia yet observed by the Kepler spacecraft. Here we present the discovery of ASASSN-18bt, the K2 light curve, and pre-discovery data from ASAS-SN and the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). The K2 early-time light curve has an unprecedented 30-minute cadence and photometric precision for an SN~Ia light curve, and it unambiguously shows a ~4 day nearly linear phase followed by a steeper rise. Thus, ASASSN-18bt joins a growing list of SNe Ia whose early light curves are not well described by a single power law. We show that a double-power-law model fits the data reasonably well, hinting that two physical processes must be responsible for the observed rise. However, we find that current models of the interaction with a non-degenerate companion predict an abrupt rise and cannot adequately explain the initial, slower linear phase. Instead, we find that existing, published models with shallow 56Ni are able to span the observed behavior and, with tuning, may be able to reproduce the ASASSN-18bt light curve. Regardless, more theoretical work is needed to satisfactorily model this and other early-time SNe~Ia light curves. Finally, we use Swift X-ray non-detections to constrain the presence of circumstellar material (CSM) at much larger distances and lower densities than possible with the optical light curve. For a constant density CSM these non-detections constrain rho<4.5 * 10^5 cm^-3 at a radius of 4 *10^15 cm from the progenitor star. Assuming a wind-like environment, we place mass-loss limits of Mdot< 8 * 10^-6 M_sun yr^-1 for v_w=100 km s^-1, ruling out some symbiotic progenitor systems.

First Resolution of Microlensed Images

We employ VLTI GRAVITY to resolve, for the first time, the two images generated by a gravitational microlens. The measurements of the image separation θ_{-,+}=3.78 +/- 0.05 mas, and hence the Einstein radius θ_E =1.87 +/- 0.03 mas, are precise. This demonstrates the robustness of the method, provided that the source is bright enough for GRAVITY (K <~ 10.5) and the image separation is of order or larger than the fringe spacing. When θ_E is combined with a measurement of the "microlens parallax" π_E, the two will together yield the lens mass and lens-source relative parallax and proper motion. Because the source parallax and proper motion are well measured by Gaia, this means that the lens characteristics will be fully determined, whether or not it proves to be luminous. This method can be a powerful probe of dark, isolated objects, which are otherwise quite difficult to identify, much less characterize. Our measurement contradicts Einstein's (1936) prediction that "the luminous circle [i.e., microlensed image] cannot be distinguished" from a star.

ASASSN-15nx: A luminous Type II supernova with a "perfect" linear decline

We report a luminous Type II supernova, ASASSN-15nx, with a peak luminosity of M_V=-20 mag, that is between typical core-collapse supernovae and super-luminous supernovae. The post-peak optical light curves show a long, linear decline with a steep slope of 2.5 mag/100 days (i.e., an exponential decline in flux), through the end of observations at phase ~260 days. In contrast, the light curves of hydrogen rich supernovae (SNe II-P/L) always show breaks in their light curves at phase ~100 days, before settling onto Co56 radioactive decay tails with a decline rate of about 1 mag/100 days. The spectra of ASASSN-15nx do not exhibit the narrow emission-line features characteristic of Type IIn SNe, which can have a wide variety of light-curve shapes usually attributed to strong interactions with a dense circumstellar medium (CSM). ASASSN-15nx has a number of spectroscopic peculiarities, including a relatively weak and triangularly-shaped H-alpha emission profile with no absorption component. The physical origin of these peculiarities is unclear, but the long and linear post-peak light curve without a break suggests a single dominant powering mechanism. Decay of a large amount of Ni56 (M_Ni56 = 1.6 +/- 0.2 M_sun) can power the light curve of ASASSN-15nx, and the steep light-curve slope requires substantial gamma-ray escape from the ejecta, which is possible given a low-mass hydrogen envelope for the progenitor. Another possibility is strong CSM interactions powering the light curve, but the CSM needs to be sculpted to produce the unique light-curve shape and to avoid producing SN IIn-like narrow emission lines.

A Significantly off-center Ni56 Distribution for the Low-Luminosity Type Ia Supernova SN 2016brx from the 100IAS survey

We present nebular-phase spectra of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2016brx, a member of the 1991bg-like subclass that lies at the faint end of the SN Ia luminosity function. Nebular spectra are available for only three other 1991bg-like SNe, and their Co line centers are all within <~ 500 km/s of each other. In contrast, the nebular Co line center of SN 2016brx is blue-shifted by >1500 km/s compared to them and by ~1200 km/s compared to the rest frame. This is a significant shift relative to the narrow nebular line velocity dispersion of <~ 2000 km/s of these SNe. The large range of nebular line shifts implies that the Ni56 in the ejecta of SN 1991bg-like events is off-center by ~1000 km/s rather than universally centrally confined as previously suggested. With the addition of SN 2016brx, the Co nebular line shapes of 1991bg-like objects appear to connect with the brighter SNe Ia that show double-peak profiles, hinting at a continuous distribution of line profiles among SNe Ia. One class of models to produce both off-center and bi-modal Ni56 distributions is collisions of white dwarfs with unequal and equal masses.

A Semantic QA-Based Approach for Text Summarization Evaluation

Many Natural Language Processing and Computational Linguistics applications involves the generation of new texts based on some existing texts, such as summarization, text simplification and machine translation. However, there has been a serious problem haunting these applications for decades, that is, how to automatically and accurately assess quality of these applications. In this paper, we will present some preliminary results on one especially useful and challenging problem in NLP system evaluation: how to pinpoint content differences of two text passages (especially for large pas-sages such as articles and books). Our idea is intuitive and very different from existing approaches. We treat one text passage as a small knowledge base, and ask it a large number of questions to exhaustively identify all content points in it. By comparing the correctly answered questions from two text passages, we will be able to compare their content precisely. The experiment using 2007 DUC summarization corpus clearly shows promising results.

Topological light-trapping on a dislocation

Topology has been revealed to play a fundamental role in physics in the past decades. Topological insulators have unconventional gapless edge states where disorder-induced back-scattering is suppressed. In photonics, such edge states lead to unidirectional waveguides which are useful for integrated photonic chips. Cavity modes, another type of fundamental components in photonic chips, however, are not protected by band topology because of their lower dimensions. Here we demonstrate that concurrent wavevector-space and real-space topology, dubbed as the "dual-topology", can lead to light-trapping in lower-dimensions. The resultant photonic bound state emerges as a Jackiw-Rebbi soliton mode localized on a dislocation in a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal, as predicted theoretically and discovered experimentally. Such a strongly-confined 0D localized mode, which is solely due to the topological mechanism, is found to be robust against perturbations. Our study unveils a new mechanism for topological light-trapping in lower-dimensions, which is valuable for fundamental physics and a variety of applications in photonics.

Gaia17biu/SN 2017egm in NGC 3191: The closest hydrogen-poor superluminous supernova to date is in a "normal", massive, metal-rich spiral galaxy

Hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe-I) have been predominantly found in low-metallicity, star-forming dwarf galaxies. Here we identify Gaia17biu/SN 2017egm as an SLSN-I occurring in a "normal" spiral galaxy (NGC 3191) in terms of stellar mass (several times 10^10 M_sun) and metallicity (roughly Solar). At redshift z=0.031, Gaia17biu is also the lowest redshift SLSN-I to date, and the absence of a larger population of SLSNe-I in dwarf galaxies of similar redshift suggests that metallicity is likely less important to the production of SLSNe-I than previously believed. With the smallest distance and highest apparent brightness for an SLSN-I, we are able to study Gaia17biu in unprecedented detail. Its pre-peak near-ultraviolet to optical color is similar to that of Gaia16apd and among the bluest observed for an SLSN-I while its peak luminosity (M_g = -21 mag) is substantially lower than Gaia16apd. Thanks to the high signal-to-noise ratios of our spectra, we identify several new spectroscopic features that may help to probe the properties of these enigmatic explosions. We detect polarization at the ~0.5% level that is not strongly dependent on wavelength, suggesting a modest, global departure from spherical symmetry. In addition, we put the tightest upper limit yet on the radio luminosity of an SLSN-I with <5.4x10^26 erg/s/Hz (at 10 GHz), which is almost a factor of 40 better than previous upper limits and one of the few measured at an early stage in the evolution of an SLSN-I. This limit largely rules out an association of this SLSNe-I with known populations of gamma-ray burst (GRB) like central engines.

On convergence rates of game theoretic reinforcement learning algorithms

This paper investigates a class of multi-player discrete games where each player aims to maximize its own utility function. Each player does not know the other players' action sets, their deployed actions or the structures of its own or the others' utility functions. Instead, each player only knows its own deployed actions and its received utility values in recent history. We propose a reinforcement learning algorithm which converges to the set of action profiles which have maximal stochastic potential with probability one. Furthermore, the convergence rate of the proposed algorithm is quantified. The algorithm performance is verified using two case studies in the smart grid and cybersecurity.

The Rise and Peak of the Luminous Type IIn SN 2017hcc/ATLAS17lsn from ASAS-SN and Swift UVOT Data

We present observations of the rise and peak of the Type IIn supernova SN 2017hcc/ATLAS17lsn obtained by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) and Swift UVOT. The light curve of SN 2017hcc/ATLAS17lsn peaks at $V\simeq 13.7$ mag, which from the estimated redshift of the host galaxy ($z=0.0168$, $D\simeq 73$ Mpc) implies an absolute peak magnitude $M_{V,peak} \simeq -20.7$ mag. The near-UV to optical spectral energy distribution of SN 2017hcc/ATLAS17lsn from Swift UVOT is consistent with a hot, but cooling blackbody with $\rm T_{bb}\simeq 16500$ K on Oct. 28.4 and $\rm T_{bb} \simeq 11700$ K on Nov. 19.6. The estimated peak bolometric luminosity $L_{bol, peak}\simeq 1.3\times 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ makes SN2017hcc/ATLAS17lsn one of the most luminous Type IIn supernovae studied to date. From the bolometric light curve we constrain the risetime to be $\sim 27$ days and the total radiated energy of the event to date is $4\times 10^{50}$ erg.

The ASAS-SN Bright Supernova Catalog -- III. 2016

This catalog summarizes information for all supernovae discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) and all other bright ($m_{peak}\leq17$), spectroscopically confirmed supernovae discovered in 2016. We then gather the near-IR through UV magnitudes of all host galaxies and the offsets of the supernovae from the centers of their hosts from public databases. We illustrate the results using a sample that now totals 668 supernovae discovered since 2014 May 1, including the supernovae from our previous catalogs, with type distributions closely matching those of the ideal magnitude limited sample from Li et al. (2011). This is the third of a series of yearly papers on bright supernovae and their hosts from the ASAS-SN team.

Predicting the Quality of Short Narratives from Social Media

An important and difficult challenge in building computational models for narratives is the automatic evaluation of narrative quality. Quality evaluation connects narrative understanding and generation as generation systems need to evaluate their own products. To circumvent difficulties in acquiring annotations, we employ upvotes in social media as an approximate measure for story quality. We collected 54,484 answers from a crowd-powered question-and-answer website, Quora, and then used active learning to build a classifier that labeled 28,320 answers as stories. To predict the number of upvotes without the use of social network features, we create neural networks that model textual regions and the interdependence among regions, which serve as strong benchmarks for future research. To our best knowledge, this is the first large-scale study for automatic evaluation of narrative quality.

Bag-of-Words Method Applied to Accelerometer Measurements for the Purpose of Classification and Energy Estimation

Accelerometer measurements are the prime type of sensor information most think of when seeking to measure physical activity. On the market, there are many fitness measuring devices which aim to track calories burned and steps counted through the use of accelerometers. These measurements, though good enough for the average consumer, are noisy and unreliable in terms of the precision of measurement needed in a scientific setting. The contribution of this paper is an innovative and highly accurate regression method which uses an intermediary two-stage classification step to better direct the regression of energy expenditure values from accelerometer counts. We show that through an additional unsupervised layer of intermediate feature construction, we can leverage latent patterns within accelerometer counts to provide better grounds for activity classification than expert-constructed timeseries features. For this, our approach utilizes a mathematical model originating in natural language processing, the bag-of-words model, that has in the past years been appearing in diverse disciplines outside of the natural language processing field such as image processing. Further emphasizing the natural language connection to stochastics, we use a gaussian mixture model to learn the dictionary upon which the bag-of-words model is built. Moreover, we show that with the addition of these features, we're able to improve regression root mean-squared error of energy expenditure by approximately 1.4 units over existing state-of-the-art methods.
