Recovering cosmological parameters from the mock gravitational wave data of the Einstein Telescope

Einstein Telescope (ET) is a third-generation gravitational wave (GW) detector with tenfold better sensitivity compared to the advanced LIGO detectors. It will be capable of observing copious stellar mass binary black hole mergers up to a redshift of 10 which will make it especially useful for cosmography. We generate a mock gravitational wave event catalog for the Einstein Telescope and show the recoverability of either the Hubble constant ($H_0$) or the matter density parameter ($\Omega_{\rm m}$). We present a simple, effective and fast technique for inferring $H_0$ (or $\Omega_{\rm m}$) using the intrinsic chirp mass spectrum of black hole binaries, and investigate the efficacy of the method assuming the standard model of cosmology. If only $H_0$ has to be constrained, we find that at least one year of ET's observation will be required to achieve 1% uncertainty. With the same amount of observation, $\Omega_{\rm m}$ can be constrained to within 4% uncertainty. With ET operating as a standalone instrument, we show that the GW spectral sirens detected by it can constrain the Hubble constant.

Neutron Star properties in $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity

In this work, we systematically derive the Einstein field equations in general relativity and $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity, the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation, and the expressions for axial and polar Tidal Love Numbers (TLNs) for neutron stars. The derivations are sourced from existing literature and elaborated for the ease of comprehension.

AstroSat and NuSTAR observations of XTE J1739-285 during the 2019-2020 outburst

We report results from a study of XTE J1739-285, a transient neutron star low mass X-ray binary observed with AstroSat and NuSTAR during its 2019-2020 outburst. We detected accretion-powered X-ray pulsations at 386 Hz during very short intervals (0.5--1 s) of X-ray flares. These flares were observed during the 2019 observation of XTE J1739-285. During this observation, we also observed a correlation between intensity and hardness ratios, suggesting an increase in hardness with the increase in intensity. Moreover, a thermonuclear X-ray burst detected in our AstroSat observation during the 2020 outburst revealed the presence of coherent burst oscillations at 383 Hz during its decay phase. The frequency drift of 3 Hz during X-ray burst can be explained with r modes. Thus, making XTE J1739-285 belong to a subset of NS-LMXBs which exhibit both nuclear- and accretion-powered pulsations. The power density spectrum created using the AstroSat-LAXPC observations in 2020 showed the presence of a quasi-periodic oscillation at ~ 0.83 Hz. Our X-ray spectroscopy revealed significant changes in the spectra during the 2019 and 2020 outburst. We found a broad iron line emission feature in the X-ray spectrum during the 2020 observation, while this feature was relatively narrow and has a lower equivalent width in 2019,~when the source was accreting at higher rates than 2020.

Darboux transformations for Dunkl-Schroedinger equations with energy dependent potential and position dependent mass

We construct arbitrary-order Darboux transformations for Schroedinger equations with energy-dependent potential and position-dependent mass within the Dunkl formalism. Our construction is based on a point transformation that interrelates our equations with the standard Schroedinger case. We apply our method to generate several solvable Dunkl-Schroedinger equations.

Zero energy states of Dirac equation in $(2+1)$-dimensional curved spacetime

We consider Dirac equation in $(2+1)$ dimensional curved spacetime in the presence of a scalar potential. It is then shown that the zero energy states are degenerate and they can be obtained when the momentum $k_y$ in the $y$ direction satisfies certain constraints involving the mass parameter and the scalar potential coupling.

NuSTAR and AstroSat observations of thermonuclear X-ray bursts with short-recurrence times in 4U 1636$-$536

We report results from the spectro-timing analysis of the atoll source 4U 1636$-$536 observed with NuSTAR and AstroSat during its hard spectral state. In three observations of 207 ks total exposure, we identify 31 thermonuclear X-ray bursts including five doublets and a triplet. Recurrence time as short as 3.8 minutes is seen in one of the doublets. To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest recurrence time known for this source. Our time-averaged spectroscopy during the bursts indicate the presence of an additional powerlaw or a blackbody component in a few cases, perhaps due to varying temperatures during bursts or plausible deviation from ideal blackbody behavior, however, it is difficult to probe this using the time-resolved spectroscopy owing to limited statistics. Time-resolved bursts are well fit using an absorbed blackbody model with temperatures varying between 1.7 and 2.2 keV. Burst oscillations around 581 Hz are detected with 3$\sigma$ confidence during the decay phase in two of the X-ray bursts. One of the burst oscillations is seen at 582 Hz, a frequency observed during the 2001 superburst in this source.

Quantum backflow of a Dirac fermion on a ring

We study the quantum backflow problem of a relativistic charged Dirac fermion constrained to move on a ring of radius $R$. Using the relativistic current operator we compute the probability flux through a generic time interval to show emergence of quantum backflow. We also discuss the limiting case when the particle moves along a line.

Thermonuclear X-ray bursts from LMXB 4U 1636$-$536 observed with AstroSat

We report results obtained from the study of 12 thermonuclear X-ray bursts in 6 AstroSat observations of a neutron star X-ray binary and well-known X-ray burster, 4U 1636$-$536. Burst oscillations at $\sim$581 Hz are observed with 4$-$5$\sigma$ confidence in three of these X-ray bursts. The rising phase burst oscillations show a decreasing trend of the fractional rms amplitude at 3$\sigma$ confidence,by far the strongest evidence of thermonuclear flame spreading observed with AstroSat. During the initial 0.25 second of the rise a very high value (34.0$\pm$6.7%) is observed. The concave shape of the fractional amplitude profile provides a strong evidence of latitude-dependent flame speeds, possibly due to the effects of the Coriolis force. We observe decay phase oscillations with amplitudes comparable to that observed during the rising phase, plausibly due to the combined effect of both surface modes as well as the cooling wake. The Doppler shifts due to the rapid rotation of the neutron star might cause hard pulses to precede the soft pulses, resulting in a soft lag. The distance to the source estimated using the PRE bursts is consistent with the known value of $\sim$6 kpc.

Dirac systems with magnetic field and position dependent mass: Darboux transformations and equivalence with generalized Dirac oscillators

We construct a Darboux transformation for a class of two-dimensional Dirac systems at zero energy. Our starting equation features a position-dependent mass, a matrix potential, and an additional degree of freedom that can be interpreted either as a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane or a generalized Dirac oscillator interaction. We obtain a number of Darbouxtransformed Dirac equations for which the zero energy solutions are exactly known.

Modulation of Landau levels and de Haas-van Alphen oscillation in magnetized graphene by uniaxial tensile strain/ stress

The strain engineering technique allows us to alter the electronic properties of graphene in various ways. Within the continuum approximation, the influences of strain result in the appearance of a pseudo-gauge field and modulated Fermi velocity. In this study, we investigate theoretically the effect of linear uniaxial tensile strain and/or stress, which makes the Fermi velocity anisotropic, on a magnetized graphene sheet in the presence of an applied electrostatic voltage. More specifically, we analyze the consequences of the anisotropic nature of the Fermi velocity on the structure Landau levels and de Haas - van Alphen (dHvA) quantum oscillation in the magnetized graphene sheet. The effect of the direction of the applied strain has also been discussed.

Potential Algebra Approach to Quantum Mechanics with Generalized Uncertainty Principle

In this note, we study the potential algebra for several models arising out of quantum mechanics with generalized uncertainty principle. We first show that the eigenvalue equation corresponding to the momentum-space Hamiltonian \[H=-(1+\beta p^{2})\frac{d}{dp}(1+\beta p^{2})\frac{d}{dp}+g(g-1)\beta^{2}p^{2}-g\beta,\] which is associated with some one-dimensional models with minimal length uncertainty, can be solved by the unitary representations of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ if $g\in\{\tfrac{1}{2},1,\tfrac{3}{2},2,\cdots\}$. We then apply this result to spectral problems for the non-relativistic harmonic oscillator as well as the relativistic Dirac oscillator in the presence of a minimal length and show that these problems can be solved solely in terms of $\mathfrak{su}(2)$.

Generalized harmonic confinement of massless Dirac fermions in (2+ 1) dimensions

In this article we discuss generalized harmonic confinement of massless Dirac fermions in (2+1) dimensions using smooth finite magnetic fields. It is shown that these types of magnetic fields lead to conditional confinement, that is confinement is possible only when the angular momentum (and parameters which depend on it) assumes some specific values. The solutions for non zero energy states as well as zero energy states have been found exactly.

Conditional electron confinement in graphene via smooth magnetic fields

In this article we discuss confinement of electrons in graphene via smooth magnetic fields which are finite everywhere on the plane. We shall consider two types of magnetic fields leading to systems which are conditionally exactly solvable and quasi exactly solvable. The bound state energies and wave functions in both cases have been found exactly.

Thermodynamics of Quantum Phase Transitions of a Dirac oscillator in a homogenous magnetic field

The Dirac oscillator in a homogenous magnetic field exhibits a chirality phase transition at a particular (critical) value of the magnetic field. Recently, this system has also been shown to be exactly solvable in the context of noncommutative quantum mechanics featuring the interesting phenomenon of re-entrant phase transitions. In this work we provide a detailed study of the thermodynamics of such quantum phase transitions (both in the standard and in the noncommutative case) within the Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics pointing out that the magnetization has discontinuities at critical values of the magnetic field even at finite temperatures.

Construction of zero energy states in graphene through the supersymmetry formalism

We devise a supersymmetry-based method for the construction of zero-energy states in graphene. Our method is applied to a two-dimensional massless Dirac equation with a hyperbolic scalar potential. We determine supersymmetric partners of our initial system and derive a reality condition for the transformed potential. The Dirac potentials generated by our method can be used to approximate interactions that are experimentally realizable.

Pseudo-Hermitian and PT -symmetric quantum systems with energy-dependent potentials: Bound-state solutions and energy spectra

We introduce generalized versions of complex Scarf and Morse-type potentials that con- tain energy-dependent parameters. PT -symmetry and pseudo-hermiticity of the associated quantum systems are discussed, and a modified orthogonality relation and pseudo-norm are constructed. We show that despite energy-dependence, our systems can admit real energy spectra and normalizable solutions of bound-state type.

Quantum models with energy-dependent potentials solvable in terms of exceptional orthogonal polynomials

We construct energy-dependent potentials for which the Schroedinger equations admit solu- tions in terms of exceptional orthogonal polynomials. Our method of construction is based on certain point transformations, applied to the equations of exceptional Hermite, Jacobi and Laguerre polynomials. We present several examples of boundary-value problems with energy-dependent potentials that admit a discrete spectrum and the corresponding normalizable solutions in closed form.

Quasi exactly solvable extension of Calogero model associated with exceptional orthogonal polynomials

By using the technique of supersymmetric quantum mechanics, we study a quasi exactly solvable extension of the N-particle rational Calogero model with harmonic confining interaction. Such quasi exactly solvable many particle system, whose effective potential in the radial direction yields a supersymmetric partner of the radial harmonic oscillator, is constructed by including new long-range interactions to the rational Calogero model. An infinite number of bound state energy levels are obtained for this system under certain conditions. We also calculate the corresponding bound state wave functions in terms of the recently discovered exceptional orthogonal Laguerre polynomials.
