Inevitable shock formation for 3-D compressible Euler flows

We prove that solutions arising from smooth, sufficiently small, compactly supported perturbations of non-vacuum constant states in three-dimensional irrotational compressible flow must blow up in finite time, without any symmetry assumptions or other restrictions on the initial data. Moreover, we prove that shock inevitably forms at the boundary of the maximal Cauchy development, and that its formation time agrees, in the small-data asymptotic regime, with the lifespan predicted by the radiation-field analysis.

Anti-symmetric Multimode Waveguide Grating-Assisted Narrowband MZI for Programmable Spectral Shaping Units

We present a narrowband integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) capable of precise transmission control within a targeted wavelength band while maintaining out-of-band transparency. This functionality enables its use as a fundamental building block for fully programmable on-chip spectral shaping. The device is implemented on a novel dual-mode (TE0/ TE1) transmission platform, where anti-symmetric multimode waveguide Bragg gratings (AM-WBGs) and asymmetric Y-branches are combined to function as an equivalent narrowband 1*2 or 2*2 coupler. Experimentally, the MZI achieves wide extinction ratio tuning 0 dB to 30 dB across a 2.5 nm bandwidth, with independent and simultaneous control of both wavelength and extinction ratio. Cascaded multiple narrowband MZIs are experimentally characterized, demonstrating independent intensity control at individual wavelengths without cross-interference. Furthermore, the device's application as a tunable, channel-selective optical blocker/passer in high-speed communication systems is experimentally validated. Compared to prior approaches relying on dual-grating-assisted contra-directional couplers, the AM-WBG-based design overcomes fundamental bandwidth limitations caused by unintended intra-waveguide coupling bands. In addition, their single-waveguide-grating structures enhance the reliability of both fabrication and spectral control, while enabling compact spiral configurations for significant miniaturization. These advantages position the proposed MZI a promising, scalable candidate for advanced spectral shaping applications.

Constructing characteristic initial data for three dimensional compressible Euler equations

This paper resolves the characteristic initial data problem for the three-dimensional compressible Euler equations - an open problem analogous to Christodoulou's characteristic initial value formulation for the vacuum Einstein field equations in general relativity. Within the framework of acoustical geometry, we prove that for any "initial cone" $C_0\subset \mathcal{D}=[0,T]\times\mathbb{R}^3$ with initial data $(\mathring{\rho},\mathring{v},\mathring{s})$ given at $S_{0,0}=C_0\cap \Sigma_0$, arbitrary smooth entropy function and angular velocity determine smooth initial data $(\rho,v,s)$ on $C_0$ that render $C_0$ characteristic. Differing from the intersecting-hypersurface case by Speck-Yu [19] and the symmetric reduction case by Lisibach [11], our vector field method recursively determines all (including $0$-th) order derivatives of the solution along $C_0$ via transport equations and wave equations. This work provides a complete characteristic data construction for admissible hypersurfaces in the 3D compressible Euler system, introducing useful tools and providing novel aspects for studies of the long-time dynamics of the compressible Euler flow.

On the motion of charged particles in constant electromagnetic field: the parallel case

This paper is devoted to presenting a rigorous mathematical derivation for the classical phenomenon in Maxwell's theory that a charged particle moves along a straight line in a constant electromagnetic field if the initial velocity is parallel to the constant electromagnetic field. The particle is modeled by scaled solitons to a class of nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations and the nonlinear interaction between the charged particle and the electromagnetic field is governed by the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system. We show that when the size and amplitude of the particle are sufficiently small, the solution to the coupled nonlinear system exists up to any given time and the energy of the particle concentrates along a straight line. The method relies on the modulation approach for the study of stability for solitons and weighted energy estimates for the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equations.

On the stability of multi-dimensional rarefaction waves II: existence of solutions and applications to Riemann problem

This is the second paper in a series studying the nonlinear stability of rarefaction waves in multi-dimensional gas dynamics. We construct initial data near singularities in the rarefaction wave region and, combined with the a priori energy estimates from the first paper, demonstrate that any smooth perturbation of constant states on one side of the diaphragm in a shock tube can be connected to a centered rarefaction wave. We apply this analysis to study multi-dimensional perturbations of the classical Riemann problem for isentropic Euler equations. We show that the Riemann problem is structurally stable in the regime of two families of rarefaction waves.

On the stability of multi-dimensional rarefaction waves I: the energy estimates

We study the resolution of discontinuous singularities in gas dynamics via rarefaction waves. The mechanism is well-understood in the one dimensional case. We will prove the non-nonlinear stability of the Riemann problem for multi-dimensional isentropic Euler equations in the regime of rarefaction waves. The proof relies on the new energy estimates \emph{without loss of derivatives}. We also give a detailed geometric description of the rarefaction wave fronts. This is the first paper in the series which provides the \emph{a priori} energy bounds.

On the global dynamics of Yang-Mills-Higgs equations

We study solutions to the Yang-Mills-Higgs equations on the maximal Cauchy development of the data given on a ball of radius $R$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$. The energy of the data could be infinite and the solution grows at most inverse polynomially in $R-t$ as $t\rightarrow R$. As applications, we derive pointwise decay estimates for Yang-Mills-Higgs fields in the future of a hyperboloid or in the Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{1+3}$ for data bounded in the weighted energy space with weights $|x|^{1+\epsilon}$. Moreover, for the abelian case of Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system, we extend the small data result of Lindblad and Sterbenz to general large data (under same assumptions but without any smallness). The proof is gauge independent and it is based on the framework of Eardley and Moncrief together with the geometric Kirchhoff-Sobolev parametrix constructed by Klainerman and Rodnianski. The new ingredient is a class of weighted energy estimates through backward light cones adapted to the initial data.

On the rigidity from infinity for nonlinear Alfv\'en waves

The Alfv\'en waves are fundamental wave phenomena in magnetized plasmas and the dynamics of Alfv\'en waves are governed by a system of nonlinear partial differential equations called the MHD system. In this paper, we study the rigidity aspect of the scattering problem for the MHD equations: We prove that the Alfv\'en waves must vanish if their scattering fields vanish at infinities. The proof is based on a careful study of the null structure and a family of weighted energy estimates.

On the rigidity of stationary charged black holes: small perturbations of the non-extremal Kerr-Newman family

We prove a perturbative result concerning the uniqueness of Kerr-Newman family of black holes: given an asymptotically flat space-time with bifurcate horizons, if it agrees with a non-extremal Kerr-Newman space-time asymptotically flat at infinity and it is sufficiently close to the Kerr-Newman family, then the space-time must be one of the Kerr-Newman solutions. The closeness to the Kerr-Newman family is measured by the smallness of a pair of Mars-Simon type tensors, which were introduced by Wong in \cite{Wong_09} to detect the Kerr-Newmann family.

A note on the number of irrational odd zeta values

It is proved that, for all odd integer $s \geqslant s_0(\varepsilon)$, there are at least $\big( c_0 - \varepsilon \big) \frac{s^{1/2}}{(\log s)^{1/2}} $ many irrational numbers among the following odd zeta values: $\zeta(3),\zeta(5),\zeta(7),\cdots,\zeta(s)$. The constant $c_0 = 1.192507\ldots$ can be expressed in closed form. The work is based on the previous work of Fischler, Sprang and Zudilin [FSZ19], improves the lower bound $2^{(1-\varepsilon)\frac{\log s}{\log\log s}}$ therein. The main new ingredient is an optimal design for the zeros of the auxiliary rational functions, which relates to the inverse of Euler totient funtion.

On global dynamics of the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equations

On the three dimensional Euclidean space, for data with finite energy, it is well-known that the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equations admit global solutions. However, the asymptotic behaviours of the solutions for the data with non-vanishing charge and arbitrary large size are unknown. It is conjectured that the solutions disperse as linear waves and enjoy the so-called peeling properties for pointwise estimates. We provide a gauge independent proof of the conjecture.

On one-dimension semi-linear wave equations with null conditions

It is well-known that in dimensions at least three semilinear wave equations with null conditions admit global solutions for small initial data. It is also known that in dimension two such result still holds for a certain class of quasi-linear wave equations with null conditions. The proofs are based on the decay mechanism of linear waves. However, in one dimension, waves do not decay. Nevertheless, we will prove that small data still lead to global solutions if the null condition is satisfied.

On global dynamics of three dimensional magnetohydrodynamics: nonlinear stability of Alfv\'en waves

We construct and study global solutions for the 3-dimensional incompressible MHD systems with arbitrary small viscosity. In particular, we provide a rigorous justification for the following dynamical phenomenon observed in many contexts: the solution initially behaves like non-dispersive waves and the shape of the solution persists for a very long time (proportional to the Reynolds number), thereafter, the solution will be damped due to the long-time accumulation of the diffusive effects, eventually, the total energy of the system becomes extremely small compared to the viscosity so that the diffusion takes over and the solution afterwards decays fast in time. We do not assume any condition on the symmetry or on the vorticity. The size of data and the a priori estimates do not depend on viscosity. The proof is builded upon a novel use of the basic energy identity and a geometric study of the characteristic hypersurfaces. The approach is partly inspired by Christodoulou-Klainerman's proof of the nonlinear stability of Minkowski space in general relativity.

On the formation of shocks for quasilinear wave equations

The paper is devoted to the study of shock formation of the 3-dimensional quasilinear wave equation \begin{equation}\label{Main Equation} - \big(1+3G^{\prime\prime}(0) (\partial_t\phi)^2\big)\partial^2_t \phi +\Delta\phi=0,\tag{\textbf{$\star$}} \end{equation} where $G^{\prime\prime}(0)$ is a non-zero constant. We will exhibit a family of smooth initial data and show that the foliation of the incoming characteristic hypersurfaces collapses. Similar to 1-dimensional conservational laws, we refer this specific type breakdown of smooth solutions as shock formation. Since $(\star)$ satisfies the classical null condition, it admits global smooth solutions for small data. Therefore, we will work with large data (in energy norm). Moreover, no symmetry condition is imposed on the initial datum. We emphasize the geometric perspectives of shock formations in the proof. More specifically, the key idea is to study the interplay between the following two objects: (1) the energy estimates of the linearized equations of $(\star)$; (2) the differential geometry of the Lorentzian metric $g=-\dfrac{1}{\left(1+3G^{\prime\prime}(0) (\partial_t\phi)^2\right)} d t^2+dx_1^2+dx_2^2+dx_3^2$. Indeed, the study of the characteristic hypersurfaces (implies shock formation) is the study of the null hypersurfaces of $g$. The techniques in the proof are inspired by the work \cite{Ch-Shocks} in which the formation of shocks for $3$-dimensional relativistic compressible Euler equations with small initial data is established. We also use the short pulse method which is introduced in the study of formation of black holes in general relativity in \cite{Ch-BlackHoles} and generalized in \cite{K-R-09}.

Descope of the ALIA mission

The present work reports on a feasibility study commissioned by the Chinese Academy of Sciences of China to explore various possible mission options to detect gravitational waves in space alternative to that of the eLISA/LISA mission concept. Based on the relative merits assigned to science and technological viability, a few representative mission options descoped from the ALIA mission are considered. A semi-analytic Monte Carlo simulation is carried out to understand the cosmic black hole merger histories starting from intermediate mass black holes at high redshift as well as the possible scientific merits of the mission options considered in probing the light seed black holes and their coevolution with galaxies in early Universe. The study indicates that, by choosing the armlength of the interferometer to be three million kilometers and shifting the sensitivity floor to around one-hundredth Hz, together with a very moderate improvement on the position noise budget, there are certain mission options capable of exploring light seed, intermediate mass black hole binaries at high redshift that are not readily accessible to eLISA/LISA, and yet the technological requirements seem to within reach in the next few decades for China.

On classical global solutions of nonlinear wave equations with large data

This paper studies the Cauchy problem for systems of semi-linear wave equations on $\mathbb{R}^{3+1}$ with nonlinear terms satisfying the null conditions. We construct future global-in-time classical solutions with arbitrarily large initial energy. The choice of the large Cauchy initial data is inspired by Christodoulou's characteristic initial data in his work \cite{Ch-08} on formation of black-holes. The main innovation of the current work is that we discovered a relaxed energy ansatz which allows us to prove decay-in-time-estimate. Therefore, the new estimates can also be applied in studying the Cauchy problem for Einstein equations.

A Large Data Regime for non-linear Wave Equations

For semi-linear wave equations with null form non-linearities on $\mathbb{R}^{3+1}$, we exhibit an open set of initial data which are allowed to be large in energy spaces, yet we can still obtain global solutions in the future. We also exhibit a set of localized data for which the corresponding solutions are strongly focused, which in geometric terms means that a wave travels along an specific incoming null geodesic in such a way that almost all of the energy is confined in a tubular neighborhood of the geodesic and almost no energy radiating out of this tubular neighborhood.
