Spaces of UCP maps and subalgebras of von Neumann algebras

In this paper, we establish that several natural topologies on the space of state-preserving unital completely positive maps coincide and that make it a Polish space. We then focus on the subspace of state-preserving conditional expectations and analyse its topology in detail, recovering the Haagerup-Winslow result that it aligns with the Effros-Mar\'echal topology on the space of von Neumann subalgebras. This correspondence is then applied to structural classes of subalgebras, including amenable, Haagerup and weakly amenable subalgebras. Among other consequences, we demonstrate the closedness of amenable subalgebras admitting state-preserving conditional expectations and analyze the semicontinuity and failure of continuity of the Cowling-Haagerup constant as a function on subalgebras. Finally, we investigate the space of von Neumann subalgebras that are not the image of state preserving conditional expectations for a fixed faithful normal state. For several important classes of von Neumann algebras, such as type ${\rm III}_\lambda$ factors with $0 \le \lambda < 1$ and type ${\rm III}_1$ factors with a state whose centraliser is infinite dimensional, we show that the subalgebras lacking state-preserving conditional expectations form an open and dense subset. Thus, in these settings, the generic subalgebra is not the range of state preserving conditional expectation.

Uniformly recurrent subalgebras in finite von Neumann algebras

We introduce the notion of a uniformly recurrent subalgebra (URA) for a trace-preserving action of a countable discrete group $\Gamma$ on a finite von Neumann algebra $M$, providing an operator-algebraic counterpart to the theory of uniformly recurrent subgroups (URS). We also show that the Effros-Mar\'echal space $\text{Sub}(M)$ is compact if and only if $M$ lacks a diffuse direct summand. Leveraging this, we show that URAs can exhibit arbitrary topological complexity and construct exotic URAs homeomorphic to any prescribed minimal Polish space. In the context of crossed products $M \rtimes \Gamma$ with amenable coefficients, we utilize URAs to formulate a new characterization of C*-simplicity, proving that $\Gamma$ is C*-simple if and only if the only amenable URA of the crossed product containing $M$ is $\{M\}$. Finally, to bypass the failure of compactness in $\text{Sub}(M)$, we develop a generalized state-space machinery using Baire-category methods on the weak-* compact space of trace-extending states. This construction captures compact, discrete, and exotic URAs, while recovering the classical URS framework as a special case.

On free wreath products of classical groups

We study the generalized free wreath product of classical groups introduced by the first author and Arthur Troupel. We give an explicit computation of the Haar state and deduce important properties of their associated operator algebra: in many cases, the von Neumann algebra is a full type ${\rm II}_1$-factor and the reduced C*-algebra is simple with unique trace.

Generalized free wreath products and their operator algebras

We develop a new approach on free wreath products, generalizing the constructions of Bichon and of Fima-Pittau. We show stability properties for certain approximation properties such as exactness, Haagerup property, hyperlinearity and K-amenability. We study qualitative properties of the associated von Neumann algebra: factoriality, primeness and absence of Cartan subalgebra and we give a formula for Connes' T-invariant. Finally, we give some explicit computations of K-theory groups for C*-algebras of generalized free wreath products.

Operator Algebras of Universal Quantum Homomorphisms

Given two unital C*-algebras $A$ and $B$, we study, when it exists, the universal unital $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{U}(A,B)$ generated by the coefficients of a unital $*$-homomorphism $\rho\,:\, A\rightarrow B\otimes\mathcal{U}(A,B)$. When $B$ is finite dimensional, it is well known that $\mathcal{U}(A,B)$ exists and we study in this case properties LP, RFD, primitiveness and the UCT as well as $K$-theory. We also construct a reduced version of $\mathcal{U}(A,B)$ for which we study exactness, nuclearity, simplicity, absence of non-trivial projection and $K$-theory. Then, we consider the von Neumann algebra generated by the reduced version and study factoriality, amenability, fullness, primeness, absence of Cartan, Connes' invariants, Haagerup property and Connes' embeddability. Next, we consider the case when $B$ is infinite dimensional: we show that for any non-trivial separable unital $C^*$-algebra $A$, $\mathcal{U}(A,B)$ exists if and only if $B$ is finite dimensional. Nevertheless, we show that there exists a unique unital locally $C^*$-algebra generated by the coefficients of a unital continuous $*$-homomorphism $\rho\,:\, A\rightarrow B\otimes\mathcal{U}(A,B)$. Finally, we study a natural quantum semigroup structure on $\mathcal{U}(A,A)$.

Michael's selection theorem and applications to the Mar\'echal topology

The Mar\'echal topology, also called the Effros-Mar\'echal topology, is a natural topology one can put on the space of all von Neumann subalgebras of a given von Neumann algebra. It is a result of Mar\'echal from 1973 that this topology is Polish as soon as the ambient algebra has separable predual, but the sketch of proof in her research announcement appears to have a small gap. Our main goal in this paper is to fill this gap by a careful look at the topologies one can put on the space of weak-$*$ closed subspaces of a dual space. We also indicate how Michael's selection theorem can be used as a step towards Mar\'echal's theorem, and how it simplifies the proof of an important selection result of Haagerup and Winsl{\o}w for the Mar\'echal topology. As an application, we show that the space of finite von Neumann algebras is $\mathbf\Pi^0_3$-complete.

Operator algebras of free wreath products

We give a description of operator algebras of free wreath products in terms of fundamental algebras of graphs of operator algebras as well as an explicit formula for the Haar state. This allows us to deduce stability properties for certain approximation properties such as exactness, Haagerup property, hyperlinearity and K-amenability. We study qualitative properties of the associated von Neumann algebra: factoriality, fullness, primeness and absence of Cartan subalgebra and we give a formula for Connes' $T$-invariant and $\tau$-invariant. We also study maximal amenable von Neumann subalgebras. Finally, we give some explicit computations of K-theory groups for C*-algebras of free wreath products. As an application we show that the reduced C*-algebras of quantum reflection groups are pairwise non-isomorphic.

A characterization of high transitivity for groups acting on trees

We establish a sharp sufficient condition for groups acting on trees to be highly transitive when the action on the tree is minimal of general type. This gives new examples of highly transitive groups, including icc non-solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups, thus answering a question of Hull and Osin.

Homogeneous actions on Urysohn spaces

We show that many countable groups acting on trees, including free products of infinite countable groups and surface groups, are isomorphic to dense subgroups of isometry groups of bounded Urysohn spaces. This extends previous results of the first and last author with Y. Stalder on dense subgroups of the automorphism group of the random graph. In the unbounded case, we also show that every free product of infinite countable groups arises as a dense subgroup of the isometry group of the rational Urysohn space.

Monoidal Rigidity for Free Wreath Products

In this note we observe that any compact quantum group monoidally equivalent, in a nice way, to a free wreath product of a compact quantum group $G$ by the quantum automorphism group of a finite dimensional C*-algebra with a $\delta$-form is actually isomorphic to a free wreath product of $G$ by the quantum automorphism group of another finite dimensional C*-algebra with a $\delta$-form.

Homogeneous Actions on the Random Graph

We show that any free product of two countable groups, one of them being infinite, admits a faithful and homogeneous action on the Random Graph. We also show that a large class of HNN extensions or free products, amalgamated over a finite group, admit such an action and we extend our results to groups acting on trees. Finally, we show the ubiquity of finitely generated free dense subgroups of the automorphism group of the Random Graph whose action on it have all orbits infinite.

The KK-theory of amalgamated free products

We prove a long exact sequence in KK-theory for both full and reduced amalgamated free products in the presence of conditional expectations. In the course of the proof, we established the KK-equivalence between the full amalgamated free product of two unital C*-algebras and a newly defined reduced amalgamated free product that is valid even for non GNS-faithful conditional expectations. Our results unify, simplify and generalize all the previous results obtained before by Cuntz, Germain and Thomsen.

The free wreath product of a compact quantum group by a quantum automorphism group

Let $\mathbb{G}$ be a compact quantum group and $\mathbb{G}^{aut}(B,\psi)$ be the quantum automorphism group of a finite dimensional C*-algebra $(B,\psi)$. In this paper, we study the free wreath product $\mathbb{G}\wr_{*} \mathbb{G}^{aut}(B,\psi)$. First of all, we describe its space of intertwiners and find its fusion semiring. Then, we prove some stability properties of the free wreath product operation. In particular, we find under which conditions two free wreath products are monoidally equivalent or have isomorphic fusion semirings. We also establish some analytic and algebraic properties of $\mathbb{G}\wr_{*} \mathbb{G}^{aut}(B,\psi)$. As a last result, we prove that the free wreath product of two quantum automorphism groups can be seen as the quotient of a suitable quantum automorphism group.

On compact bicrossed products

We make a comprehensive and self-contained study of compact bicrossed products arising from matched pairs of discrete groups and compact groups. We exhibit an automatic regularity property of such a matched pair and and produce an easy construction of the associated bicrossed product $\mathbb{G}$. We investigate the relative co-property $(T)$ and the relative co-Haagerup property of the pair comprising of the compact group and the bicrossed product, discuss property $(T)$ and Haagerup property of the discrete dual $\widehat{\mathbb{G}}$, and review co-amenability of $\mathbb{G}$ as well. We distinguish two such non-trivial compact bicrossed products with relative co-property $(T)$ and also provide an infinite family of pairwise non isomorphic non-trivial discrete quantum groups with property $(T)$, the existence of even one of the latter was unknown. Finally, we examine all the properties mentioned above for the crossed product quantum group given by an action by quantum automorphisms of a discrete group on a compact quantum group, and also establish the permanence of rapid decay and weak amenability and provide several explicit examples.

Graph products of operator algebras

Graph products for groups were defined by Green in her thesis as a generalization of both Cartesian and free products. In this paper we define the corresponding graph product for reduced and maximal C*-algebras, von Neumann algebras and quantum groups. We prove stability properties including permanence properties of II_1-factors, the Haagerup property, exactness and under suitable conditions the property of Rapid Decay for quantum groups.

A cocycle in the adjoint representation of the orthogonal free quantum groups

We show that the orthogonal free quantum groups are not inner amenable and we construct an explicit proper cocycle weakly contained in the regular representation. This strengthens the result of Vaes and the second author, showing that the associated von Neumann algebras are full II_1-factors and Brannan's result showing that the orthogonal free quantum groups have Haagerup's approximation property. We also deduce Ozawa-Popa's property strong (HH) and give a new proof of Isono's result about strong solidity.

Graphs of quantum groups and K-amenability

Building on a construction of J-P. Serre, we associate to any graph of C*-algebras a maximal and a reduced fundamental C*-algebra and use this theory to construct the fundamental quantum group of a graph of discrete quantum groups. This construction naturally gives rise to a quantum Bass-Serre tree which can be used to study the K-theory of the fundamental quantum group. To illustrate the properties of this construction, we prove that if all the vertex qantum groups are amenable, then the fundamental quantum group is K-amenable. This generalizes previous results of P. Julg, A. Valette, R. Vergnioux and the first author.
